By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN TAFE NSW’s new $8 million Connected Learning Centre in Nambucca Heads (CLC) will be open for classes for Semester 2 2021. The Nambucca CLC is one of 16 connected learning campuses in regional areas that has been opened by TAFE NSW. Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said, “The new facility will offer locals a host of qualifications in growth industries, with an emphasis on tourism, agribusiness, creative design, hospitality, manufacturing, business, health and construction, with many classes set to commence from July 12.” New courses include a Certificate II in Conservation Land Management, Certificate III in Education Support, Certificate IV in Building and Construction, Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate), Certificate IV in Design of Kitchens,

as a “World-class digitally enabled campus”. Both face to face and connected learning courses will be run at the CLC. Inside the building are two large collaboration pods, two small collaboration pods, computer hubs for quiet independent work, large learning spaces with flexible dividers to reduce space as needed, and a large classroom space that opens up onto an area where the Mobile Training Units can be parked.

All these learning spaces are connected. There is also a small learner support room, and a tech bar. Angela Bergin, the TAFE Services Coordinator located at the Nambucca CLC said that, “Students are able to borrow laptops from me to be used at the tech bar.” There is an outside recreation and learning area called the Yarning Circle. Alongside online connected learning courses, there will be a range of face to face short courses

Gaagal - totem of the Gumbaynggirr people NEWS Of The Area is working with members of the local Gumbaynggirr community to share culturally significant stories about the history of the area, its language and its people. This week, we asked Uncle Micklo Jarrett about the totem of the Gumbaynggirr people. ‘Gaagal’, or ‘the sea', is this totem. Uncle Micklo said that, “Gaagal to Gumbaynggirr people brings the whole group together as one people. “Because Gumbaynggirr people lived over 6000 square kilometres. “Back in the day it was hard for them to walk all this distance. “They were united by the fact that they all knew the Gaagal, the sea, was their totem. “They belonged to this

thing, they did ceremony in this ocean.” Uncle Micklo explains that Gumbaynggirr families have different totems, and many of these belong to the gaggal. These include the gurruuja (whale), the yanggaay (shark), and the yugiirr (dolphin). Gumbaynggirr women would go out to the waves and dance to pay homage to the sea. They did this all along the coast, out where the waves were breaking. The Gumbaynggirr have passed down stories about when the ocean was far far out, 120km out to the east. It is said that when the ice started melting approximately 18,000 years ago and stopped melting approximately 7,000 years ago, the sea came up on land which previously had no ngaarlu (water). The

Gumbaynggirr also have stories about why the sea came up.

STATE government funding support for the beekeeping industry means recovery from the 2019 and 2020 bushfires can happen sooner rather than later. According to data from the NSW state Government the 2019 to 2020 bushfire season destroyed over 9,800 hives, with another 88,000 suffering heat and smoke damage. The NSW and Australian governments will provide $1.9 million in funding for apiary projects including an audit of NSW governmentowned land for suitable bee sites, establishing pollinatorfriendly plants in rural NSW, upskilling beekeepers by subsidising courses in biosecurity and queen breeding, establishing a ‘Honey Library’ by profiling the unique chemical composition of NSW honey and researching projects on new honey markets and enhancing forest and bee

health for high-value medicinal honey. Agriculture Minister Adam Marshall says identifying public land that can be used for hives will help increase honey production. q Mr Laybutt’s bees are used for both honey production and pollination services.

“We will also lead the development of a ‘Honey Library’ to help identify the unique profile of NSW honey to ensure provenance as well as protect the high-quality reputation of the state’s industry," Mr Marshall said.

Local beekeeper Ben Laybutt has hives from Glenreagh down to Macksville and said all the projects were beneficial. “We have been trying to get access to government owned lands so the investigation of better access into public land is a great thing as beekeepers are crying out for it. “Traditionally State Forest are amenable but other government agencies haven't been,” he said. “For example on the coast there are a whole lot of paperbarks flowering through winter but most of the land they are on is controlled by the RMS, Coastal Reserves and National Parks and you can't get into that.” Mr Laybutt and his family have six hundred production hives and they are currently on ten blueberry farms as well as occupying another forestry site. “Beekeepers need a lot of different sites and they need to be used when the flowers are in bloom,” he said. “Some of the forestry sites that I pay a lease on I haven't been able to use because of the fires.”

THE Nambucca Valley Bridge Club (NVBC) are still providing games at their weekly sessions. Covid-19 regulations are in place as they have been since the original outbreak in 2020. The Club Committee decided to combine tables to meet the 2 square metre regulation and still allow four people to be seated to play. Cards are provided and kept by the players at their tables instead of being passed around the room as in normal circumstances. John Slade, Program Presenter at the Club said, “Our club is one of the few that has remained open to players and we have worked closely with the Armidale Club to observe social distancing and provide cards.” The Club also takes part in competitions and hosts the Annual Congress Day. Nambucca Valley Runners attend Elephant Trail Race By Tamara MCWILLIAM THE Nambucca Valley Runners travelled down to Cairncross State Forest on July 8 to participate in the annual Elephant Trail Race. This very challenging race was held over the weekend from July 9-11. The Elephant Trail Race is run by Matthew and Kerry Williams and generally held once a year, however this year will be an exception. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the event will run again from October 1-3 to enable the athletes who were in lockdown and unable to attend the July event, the opportunity to attempt the race later in the year. The Nambucca Valley runners certainly had their work cut out for them with one lap being 25km, covering 1200m of elevation. Runners could choose to compete in the 13km, 25km, 50km, 100km, 160km, and 200km events. “The climb up the mountain is incredibly steep and tough and coming down isn’t any easier as you scramble down rocks and make your way through trails that are barely there,” local runner Tamara Urquhart told News Of The Area. “Without the pink markers in the trees and the person in front of me, I would have been lost and off track for sure,” she said.

At the bottom of the mountain the course tracks through creek beds of unstable rocks, seeing runners hopping across rock pools. “Once out of the river there is a roller coaster of smaller hills all the way back,” Tamara explained. She excelled in her 25km course event, finishing in 3rd place in the women’s and 14th place overall. Keen runners, wishing to complete the 100km and over events, endured a section of the trail called ‘Death Valley’, a section so steep it is more of a climb than a walk or run. This is the breaking point of many competitors. Two Nambucca Valley Runners took up the challenge to run over 100km.

Adrian Herron endured tough and gruelling conditions to complete four laps of the course, with the 200km out of reach in this race. Cian Durbridge completed the 100km race. Cian wrote a journal of his journey which read, “Lap 1 and strong out of the gate. “I had the early, and my only lead until Death Valley. “Pulled a four-hour lap and 2nd through HQ. “I would live to regret this excited beginning!” Other Nambucca Valley runners also excelled in their events, with Peter Lambert, Gregg Clough, Nathan Keen, Rhys Riddell, Adam Ross, and Tamara Urquhart all completing the 25km course. Peter Lambert, an Elephant Trail veteran, helped many of the runners with training for the event and was on hand for guidance on race day. It was a first race attempt for Gregg, Rhys, Adam and Tamara. There was also a 2.5km kid’s race available and the children of the Nambucca Valley Runners put their joggers on to join in. Jala and Akasha Baker, Amelia and Hayden Keen and Willa Herron all completed the course. Family support is key for an event like this, “The family support crew of Rainee, Jess, Matt and Kellie were all helping out as pacers, in the shop and running with the kids,” Tamara stated. School back in session, with new restrictions By Rhys GLEESON, Junior Reporter.

TO say that Covid-19 has impacted all Australians is a fairly broad understatement, but impacts have been especially felt in the educational arena, dating back to when schools were forced to adapt quickly to online learning. “It was amazing to see how creative and dedicated our staff were and how good our students were online,” said Simon Doyle, Assistant Principal of Bishop Druitt

College, reminiscing with satisfaction over how his school and students adjusted to remote learning in 2020. “Year 12 students were very worried about the HSC, work and study, and to help them we reduced all assessments by one task last year (and other schools did the same). “Staff were rotated through the campus so that we could help supervise essential workers and children. “It was also a place for us adults to meet or help each other.”

While remote learning is now a distant memory for most students, with cases in Sydney continuing their expansion into the triple digits, it remains a possibility a period of online learning may be enforced again. This week has seen school students return for term 3 across the Nambucca Valley. However, the beginning of terms brings with it a new set of restrictions in place, including the wearing of masks indoors at school. “I’m not too bothered by the current restrictions in terms of wearing a mask

indoors. “I can deal with the mask, but it definitely is not the most pleasant thing to have on your face for long periods,” said Nambucca Valley Year 12 student Max Englert about the new restrictions in place. “I’ve noticed large amounts of people who are complaining about the use of a mask, especially those with glasses.” While not everyone is satisfied with the newest restrictions, most are choosing to cope with the changes and follow the rules. “I think it’s definitely a big change having to get used to

constantly putting on a mask but if that’s what we have to do to still be lucky enough to attend school face to face and able to see our friends then it’s definitely something that I’m sure all of us will start adjusting to,” said Ellie Spain, Year 12 student from the Nambucca Valley. Thankfully, the restrictions shouldn’t have too great an impact on the students’ ability to prepare for upcoming HSC exams after a chaotic year. “The new restrictions in our school regarding wearing masks in class are taking some

camps, weaving, Made Deadly, and the SWFW Art Book. “These will promote skills development, maintenance and preservation of traditional practices, enabling intergenerational knowledge transfer from Elders to youth,” Mr Singh said. “This funding - announced during NAIDOC week - is a massive win for our region, delivering significant benefits for arts, culture and creativity,” he said. “Local talent continues to step into the spotlight, thanks to this targeted arts and culture funding from the NSW Government.” Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said the NSW

Government’s Arts and Cultural Funding Program 2020-21 will support the state’s talented artists, workers and organisations and deliver strong arts and cultural outcomes for audiences. The funding comes at a time when the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Bruce Billson is encouraging Australians to support Indigenous businesses and to recognise the Indigenous business sector as one of the fastest growing in Australia. Data from the University of Melbourne has revealed Indigenous businesses’ contribution to the economy has more than doubled. “This new research shows how critical the Indigenous business sector is to the national economy,” Mr Billson said.. “In the 12 years to 2018, the sector saw a 115% lift in gross income to $4.88 billion and that is expected to continue to grow. “The same period saw a 74% increase in the number of businesses operating in the Indigenous business sector with more than 45,000 jobs created,” he said.

Sham marriage and unconscionable dealings claim DAVID and his first wife migrated to Sydney with their children in the 1970s. David is poorly educated and has a very limited grasp of the English language. When David’s first wife passes-away in 2012, Penny moves into his home. One year later, David and Penny are married and a short time later, David transfers the matrimonial home into their joint names. David also appoints Penny as his Power of Attorney. In 2015, David and Penny separate and the house is transferred into Penny’s name, pursuant to a Binding Financial Agreement in anticipation of their divorce. Penny soon sells the property for $1 million. When David passes away, his children become aware of the dealings in relation to David’s home. The children commence action against Penny, claiming that the marriage was a sham and that David did not have the capacity to understand the nature of the Binding Financial Agreement nor any of the transactions regarding the property. The children also commence action against the family law practitioner and the conveyancer that were involved in the transactions. After reviewing the medical evidence, the Court finds that at the time of his marriage to Penny, David was elderly and suffering from cognitive impairment. The marriage is declared void. The Court also concludes that David did not have the capacity to enter into any of the transactions regarding his home. The Court rules that the transactions are “unconscionable dealings” and that Penny holds the proceeds of sale on trust, to be repaid to David’s estate. She is also ordered to pay court costs. The children settle their claims against the family lawyer and the conveyancer for considerable sums. Nellie celebrates 90

CONGRATULATIONS to Mrs Nellie Broadhead of River Street, Macksville who recently celebrated her 90th Birthday. To mark this special day Nellie and her husband Bob were joined by family and friends for a luncheon at Macksville RSL Club. Nellie, a much-loved resident, is well known for her generosity to donate her time to local charities and organisations through crafting her knitted treasures. Many in the Valley have been lucky to be the recipient of one of Nellie’s skilfully knitted pieces, including teddy bears donated to the local Ambulance Service, knitted poppies for ANZAC Day commemorations, and rugs raffled and sold to help charities fundraising efforts.

In these cold winter nights, many would be enjoying the warmth of one of Nellie’s handcrafted rugs. Also, over the years, many newborns have started out dressed in delicately made booties which Nellie donated to Macksville hospital. Nellie has taken great pride and gained much enjoyment in the role she has played to quietly help others. It was fitting to see her contribution to our community recognised in a past Australia Day Award. Congratulations Nellie, you should take great pride in all you have achieved, wishing you all the very best as you celebrate this milestone.

Clearly you have made your home too welcoming. Do you have the smell of baking bread and freshly-ground coffee wafting through the door? Is there a sun-filled deck with a wicker lounge and plump pillows, just perfect for lounging away the morning? Do you have French Doors, always open to let in the morning breeze and people without a clue as to basic social etiquette? I feel maybe you should take the approach of our Premier and implement an immediate lockdown. Perhaps put a QR code on the front door and a sign that says no more than four people at a time for health and safety reasons (that basically excludes everyone except your immediate family). Have a sign at the front driveway alerting people that only essential services are permitted. At the rate greater Sydney is going, it won't be long, unfortunately, before we are also once again in lockdown and then your desire to have no impromptu visitors will be mandated (don't listen to the wacko lizard people flogging juice cleanses), the government can and will do everything it can to make our community safe, even if others feel it their personal right to roam, maskless, and clueless. The party for Tree-o Gallery’s exhibition wasn’t the big celebration organisers had planned due to

Two teens charged following Sydney carjacking, Mid North Coast pursuit TWO teenagers have been charged following an alleged Sydney carjacking and a police pursuit on the Mid North Coast. About 4.15am Wednesday 14 July, a 27-year-old man was seated in a stationary blue Mazda 3 in a car park on Hyatts Road, Plumpton, when the driver’s side door was opened, and he was confronted by two males – one armed with a

knife. The pair threatened the man and demanded his car keys before they pulled him out of the vehicle and assaulted him several times. The pair then entered the Mazda and drove away. Officers from Mt Druitt Police Area Command attended and commenced inquiries. The man received minor injuries to his arms and

hands, however, did not require hospital treatment. Following inquiries, about 10.15am, police from Mid North Coast Police District attended a service station on the Pacific Highway at Nambucca Heads, where they approached the blue Mazda 3. The vehicle fled at speed and police initiated a pursuit. The pursuit was terminated a short time later

on the Pacific Highway due to the manner of driving. Police continued to monitor the vehicle before officers from Coffs/Clarence Police District and the Traffic and Highway Patrol sighted it on the Pacific Highway at the intersection of Halls Road. The Mazda continued north before returning to the Pacific Highway at Harbour Drive, where it collided with another vehicle.

The vehicle attempted to drive away before allegedly hitting a second car. The occupants fled on foot into a nearby shopping precinct where they were arrested by police just before 11am. Two males – aged 15 and 16 – were taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station. The 15-year-old boy was charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon, be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, two counts of dishonestly obtain property by deception, and travel from Metropolitan Sydney area to

Mr Ella is a high profile Indigeous person who works to support the Indigenous community through a variety of activities, one of which is supporting Indigenous artists. Successful in her EOI, Ms Bateman is now thrilled that the cards will be part of Australia Post. “The cards will be featured Australia wide in selected post offices. “They are also featured on numerous websites where they can be purchased.” Nambucca Heads Post Office is expecting to have the cards in stock shortly. Examples of Ms Bateman’s artwork can be seen at various

locations throughout the Valley, such as the Lions Club Lookout and Nambucca Heads Primary School - including on staff shirts. “I have one design featured on the cards at the moment, these are in stores now, however in the next coming months more designs have been created and these will be featured in the next round of cards to be made and sold.” Ms Bateman’s artworks have a story behind them, and these stories have been provided with the artwork. “I have passed the story on but I’m not 100% sure if the story is placed on the card’s packaging.” Asked where the inspiration comes from for her art, Ms Bateman said, “Being a saltwater woman my inspiration always comes from the rivers and oceans. “I see, feel and gather inspiration from the animals,

Businesses warned about email cybercrime BUSINESSES and individuals are urged to be alert to the threat of Business Email Compromise (BEC), as many organisations return to remote working due to recent COVID restrictions. BEC is a fraud technique used by offenders to redirect legitimate fund transfers to alternative accounts. Most commonly, offenders will intercept legitimate emails or invoices from known transaction partners and change banking details to include fraudulent payment information. The victim will then unsuspectingly transfer funds to the offender. BEC often goes unnoticed until the intended recipient

of the funds enquires about the missing payment, or the victim becomes aware that the funds have been deposited incorrectly. According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), BEC is a persistent threat worldwide and in Australia the impact of BEC scams on victims is significant, with financial losses totalling more than $79 million in the past 12 months. The AFP and its law enforcement partners formed a BEC taskforce in January 2020 to respond to the threat. The taskforce’s objective is to coordinate a national effort to prevent BEC scams and disrupt associated cybercriminal syndicates. AFP Commander

Cybercrime Operations Chris Goldsmid said anyone can be a victim of BEC, with cybercriminals using sophisticated techniques to trick their targets. “Don’t be embarrassed if you fall victim, report it immediately to your bank and the police to give us the best chance of recovering your money,” Commander Goldsmid said. “If you are transferring money online do your due diligence, ensure you are comfortable that you are sending the money to the correct person and account. “If you think an email is suspicious, make further enquiries. Call and check directly with the business or

organisation you are dealing with.” Over the past twelve months, more than 3,300 incidents of BEC have been reported to the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC)

through its Report Cyber portal, with nearly half of those scams resulting in financial loss. The AFP and its taskforce partners have managed to prevent $8.45 million from being lost from the community

THE ladies of the Nambucca Heads Bowls Club have been busy enjoying not just social bowls on Thursday mornings but Club Championships. Before we resumed play at our new home green the Fours Club Championships were played at Macksville. Kerrie Dale, Nerida Blackford, Jenny Thorne and Kim Porter claimed victory over the team of Rosemary Dugdale, Sandra Seckold, Bev Jones and Pat Smith. Back at home, Manor Smith was crowned Singles Champ after playing her usual strong game against Pat “Fletch” Fletcher. Our ladies often travel to other local venues for events and two teams recently attended the 60th anniversary celebrations for the Beautizone at Coffs ex Club. Rosemary Dugdale, Nerida Blackford & Margaret Dwart enjoyed testing their skills against teams better than them on the day, but it was a successful day out for the team of Sandra Seckold, Elaine Fleming and Pat Fletcher who came 3rd after winning each of their games.

A good turnout saw Geoff O'Grady come in the winner with 36 points. Dale Bunton has been playing consistently to finish runner-up with 35. So consistent is he that he is still alive in the Trimble Furniture One singles and Tony Henshaw "Let's Get Plastered " pairs knockouts coming to the finals of each. Ross missed having to settle for a par. Had Ross sunk the putt he'd have been in a count back with Dale for the runner's up prize.

WITH a string of disasters hitting the Nambucca Valley in recent years, the Macksville Gym has been one on the list of casualties. The community run gym is still awaiting repair after the recent floods damaged the ceiling and equipment to a point it was inhabitable, forcing the temporary closure. The closing of this much needed facility has left the

community at a loss. During these trying times it has been difficult for people to maintain their fitness and health regimes with no gym facility to attend. It is exciting news therefore, that a second gym is set to open in Macksville in the coming months. Connective Fitness is due to open its doors in late July or early August 2021. The man behind the project, Kane Gois, has secured

a location in the Macksville Industrial Estate and with the support of family and friends behind the scenes has been working hard to bring health and fitness back to the community. With the recent delivery of new gym equipment, Kane is ready to make this dream of his, a reality. “I have wanted to open a fitness facility of my own for years now, a place that is for the community,” Kane told News Of

Wacky murders in a beautiful, small country town – what’s not to love about Midsomer Murders? Returning tonight with its 22nd season – and lead actor Neil Dudgeon (above right) in his 10th year as DCI John Barnaby – this well-written, atmospheric and often humorous murder mystery series has spawned many copycats, but none compare to the original. Back with four movie-length episodes, the veteran series kicks oﬀ with “The Wolf Hunter of Little Worthy”, a fresh and engaging thriller which will delight new and old fans alike. Barnaby and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix, above left) investigate a murder linked to local myth involving a creature that is half-man and half-wolf.

It’s the age-old question: Do brains or brawn get you further? Tonight, Australian Survivor returns with its eighth season, pitting the intelligent against the strong. It’s an entertaining theme, but audiences will be hungry to read between the lines and ﬁnd the colour in the supposedly black-andwhite situation. Someone will prove to have the brains and brawn to conquer the competition, but it will undoubtedly involve copious amounts of sweat and tears. Filmed in Queensland, the contestants include AFL legend Gavin Wanganeen, along with glamorous big wave surfer Flick Palmateer, prison oﬃcer Dani and children’s author Wai. THE Bowraville Goannas shared the points with the Coffs Harbour Snappers in a gruelling 15-15 draw in the Mid North Coast Rugby Union competition. Bowraville coach David Foley told News Of The Area he is pleased with the team’s performance, who are poised for a finals berth after stringing together a run of impressive wins. “The game ended in a 15

all draw, it was a very tough and physical game. “The team showed some great determination defending our try line late in the second half from pressure from the Snappers." In the end, the Goannas were unfortunate not to steal the points. “The game went right down to the final play with our backline move coming a metre short of their try line.” It has been a big year for the Bowraville side, who are now eagerly gearing up for the prospect of finals footy. “The Goannas are having the best season in years, winning 5 in a row, we are currently sitting in third on

the ladder and if we keep playing the way we are, then we have a great opportunity to end up in the finals,” said David. Before the kick-off, the two Club’s enjoyed a traditional ceremony from Uncle Trevor Wilson and Troy Robinson to mark the Mid North Coast Rugby Union competition’s Indigenous round. Snappers coach Greg Wilson said, “To me it is more than acknowledgement of people and culture it is making people be proud of their land and culture and the opportunities that exist for Indigenous athletes in sport and life,” said Greg.
