October is National Mental Health Awareness Month, and this event is one way to show support and also reconnect with the community. Nambucca Valley Police News 1. ON 5/10/21 Police arrested a female youth at a Nambucca Heads school following the stabbing incident of a fellow student. The victim sustained a wound to his left arm/shoulder and was treated at the scene by school staff and then paramedics before being conveyed to Coffs Harbour Hospital for further treatment and possible surgery. The accused young person was charged at Macksville Police Station with malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous

bodily harm and was released on bail to appear before Macksville Children’s Court on 21/10/21. 2. On 4/10/21 at about 6:30pm Police arrested a 26-year-old man at Macksville Police Station as a result of enquiries related to a domestic violence incident that had occurred earlier the same date at a Nambucca Heads address. The accused man was charged with a malicious damage offence and is currently on bail to appear before Macksville Local

Court on 25/11/21. 3. On 2/10/21 at about 2:10pm Police were alerted to a number of youths fighting in the street at Macksville. As a result of enquiries Police have charged two male youths aged 16 and 17. The 16-year-old young person is currently on bail to appear before Macksville Children’s Court on 18/11/21 for the offences of possessing custody of a knife in a public place and affray. The 17-year-old young person is to appear before Macksville Children’s Court on 18/11/21 for the offences of affray and wielding a knife in a public place.

COUNTRY trained racehorses are the lifeblood of the sport, and Macksville has a star in the making. Horsetrainer Ron Johnson got in touch with Nambucca Valley News Of The Area to share news of his ‘one to watch’ as the Spring racing season arrives. He’s got a special affection for Tycoon Street, a seven-year-old bay mare and winner of six races with $168k in winnings so far. Having suffered an ovarian problem, the clinical procedure to correct it was followed by “two months out in a nice paddock rugged at night and fed twice daily”, Ron said. “She’s done fantastic.” Ron’s over the moon with the result and said, “She’s a new horse, big and strong, all her organs now seem really clear.” Ron trains Tycoon Street on Macksville’s Ballards Farm owned by thoroughbred breeder and banana grower Peter Ballard; he swims her at the beach in Nambucca and travels her to Coffs every Saturday for track work. “Having different training routines at different places helps rejuvenate horses which has suited Tycoon Street. “She enjoys all routines but on race days she used to be stressed as she knew she was going to race in pain. “She will never race in pain again; any evidence of pain and she will not race. “She is now super and it’s quite extraordinary

National Carers Week IT’S National Carers Week and Mission Australia is thanking and celebrating all carers paid and unpaid, including those who access support through Mission Australia’s Family and Carers Mental Health program on the Mid North Coast. This year the theme is A Million Reasons to Care. There are more than two million six hundred and fifty thousand carers around the country and Mission Australia aims to highlight them and the diversity of the carers’ experiences. One in eight Australians provide unpaid support to a family member or friend. They provided 2.2 billion hours of unpaid care in 2020, and if the care they provided was paid it would amount to $1.5 billion per week. Mission Australia runs a Family and Carers Mental Health Program (FCMHP) on the Mid North Coast for families and carers of people with a mental illness through a comprehensive range of support and services. INCREASING vaccination rates mean North Coast residents are better prepared as visitors arrive to the region in coming weeks. Across all the North Coast LGAs the rate is now at 88% of those aged 16 and over having had their first dose, well ahead of the national average of 82%. 60% of people on the North Coast are fully vaccinated, just behind the national average of 62%. “I want to personally thank the whole community for their strong support for getting vaccinated and health providers for making it possible,” said Ms Julie Sturgess, Chief Executive Office of Healthy North Coast. “With the recent easing of travel restrictions, and having people visit our region again, we can feel confident that the majority of our residents

NSW reopens AFTER more than 100 days of restrictions NSW took its first steps back to normal life on Monday. Businesses across the state opened their doors to customers on Monday, 11 October, with patrons required to demonstrate they have been double-vaccinated and are willing to comply with physical-distance requirements. Premier Dominic Perrottet said Monday was the first step in seeing some restrictions lifted for those who are double-vaccinated, and for businesses around the state to re-open and get the NSW economy back to business. “There is a sense of optimism out there with thousands of businesses across the State busy preparing to open their doors tomorrow. NSW you’ve earned this,” Mr Perrottet said on Sunday. “As we re-open after more than 100 days we ask everyone to treat staff with kindness and respect when they ask you to check-in or see

UNCLE Micklo Jarrett is spreading the word on Aboriginal culture as the language leader launches into a new season of Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal Language and Culture Community Classes. The Community Classes are funded by the NSW Department of Education to educate adults, after an assessment report revealed q

that, while hundreds of local children are receiving lessons in the Gumbaynggirr language, their parents, carers and the adults around them are not. “Back in 2014 when Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal Language Nest was created I was employed as Aboriginal Language and Culture teacher and my job was to teach the teachers to facilitate the language classes.

“When we had the report on how the Language Nest was going, it showed that children were going home and using their new language and their parents didn’t know what they were saying. “It was decided we need to teach the adults how to speak Gumbaynggirr with their children “The Department of Education has allocated money and so now we

JOHN Mills, the longstanding Chairman and Support Group Leader of the Nambucca Valley Parkinson’s Support Group (NVPSG), has handed over the reins to new Support Group Leader Jenny Zirkler. Mr Mills will still be assisting the group in a lesser capacity and still has a vision for the group. “I would like to see a greater understanding in the community as to what the Parkinson’s Support Group offers.” Ms Zirkler, when talking about Mr Mills’ role in the Support Group, said, “John has been the heart and soul of the group.

“He has kept it going. “John has been very supportive of everyone, and makes sure that they have all the information that they need. “It has been a very good group over the years, and has concentrated on getting the information out to people about Parkinson’s.” A long-time resident of the Valley, Ms Zirkler started working at Macksville Hospital full-time in 1981, and her career has seen her employed as the Executive Officer and Director of Nursing at Macksville. She has recently retired from her position as Executive Manager of the NVC Group. Her time working with the NVC saw her spending

time with residents who have Parkinson’s. When Ms Zirkler heard that there was a position to fill at NVPSG she offered to take on the role. “I’ve been very involved in the community for a long time. “Once I retired I didn’t want to sit down and do nothing. “So I thought I would help with the group. “I see this as a way of giving back to the community.” Vince Carroll, a Parkinson’s nurse from Coffs Harbour also attends group meetings. Mr Mills said, “We are most fortunate in having a dedicated Parkinson’s trained nurse in Vince Carroll

with the full time job in communicating and assisting PD sufferers. “Vince covers the Coffs, Bellingen and Nambucca shire areas visiting hospitals, nursing homes, retirement villages and private homes and is held in very high esteem.” Mr Carroll’s position is part funded by NSW Health, and the rest by fundraising. Ms Zirker encouraged anyone who would like to assist, whether that be through monetary donations or volunteering time, to please get in contact. “Help is always needed. “Volunteers could help members that attend who need help with exercise, and if we do fundraising, help with that would be much appreciated.” All are welcome to attend,

Support measures for small and medium business owners

THE NSW Government has committed to provide a Summer Holiday Stock Guarantee for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and will expand the Small Business Fees and Charges Rebate for all eligible small businesses. Small and medium business owners will be able to open with confidence thanks to a suite of support measures from the NSW Government, as part of the Economic Recovery Strategy. Under the SME Summer

Holiday Stock Guarantee, eligible businesses with an annual turnover between $75,000 and $50 million will be able to apply for a grant of up to $20,000 to compensate for loss of perishable stock, or claim $10,000 for reduced capacity to sell non-perishable items if a local lockdown occurs and they are impacted. The expanded Small Business Fees and Charges Rebate will be eligible for use until 30 June 2022. NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said these measures

were key to giving businesses the confidence to open up and plan for the future, which will help reboot our economy. “Now that we’ve reached the 70 per cent double vaccination target, it’s wonderful to see businesses reopening their doors and welcoming back customers,” Mr Perrottet said. “These measures will give businesses and workers confidence to purchase stock and invest for the future knowing their doors will remain open as we get our

Nambucca Macksville Evening VIEW Club sponsors six children through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, which provides them with educational and personal support. However, with one in six young Australians living in poverty, help is needed now more than ever. This year has been particularly challenging for students experiencing

disadvantage, with thousands of children and young people forced into remote learning due to COVID-19. Many don’t have access to a reliable internet connection, an appropriate device, or a comfortable, quiet space to do their schoolwork. This puts them at risk of falling behind their more advantaged peers. Jan Ewington, President of the Nambucca Macksville Evening VIEW Club, said joining VIEW, or becoming a sponsor, has never been more important. “This year has been extremely tough on children experiencing disadvantage, with COVID-19 exacerbating many of the challenges they already face.

“This is why VIEW is so passionate about supporting the work of The Smith Family, because it’s through education that we can help break the cycle of poverty and allow these children to create better futures for themselves,” she said. Nambucca-made film in Melbourne Fringe Online

LOG on to Melbourne Fringe Online and catch the last few days of Nambucca-made film Matriarch. The film is written, performed and produced by Sandy Greenwood, a Gumbaynggirr custodian and an award-winning actor, playwright, producer and emerging director. Matriarch is a powerful one-woman show which has won numerous awards since its debut in 2018 including a Green Room Award for Best Actor in Independent Theatre and a nomination for Best Writing. To adapt to the times, Matriarch was filmed in the old Nambucca Valley School of Arts by fellow local John Merkel, and is now available to watch at the 2021 Melbourne Fringe Digital Program which closes on 17

October. Sandy toured Matriarch extensively around the country and was in the planning stages of a New York Season when COVID hit last year. The play explores the lives of four generations of Gumbaynggirr women, the matriarchs of Greenwood's own family, who all lived in the Nambucca Valley area: Sandy plays herself, her mother — a survivor of the stolen generation — her grandmother, a Dunghutti Gumbaynggirr woman who was brought to Bowraville from Kempsey when she was four to escape the authorities, and her great-grandmother, who was a highly respected Gumbaynggirr cultural midwife. Sandy told News Of The Area, “It traverses the times where Aboriginal women in the Bowraville/Nambucca area weren't allowed to give birth in the hospital — when my grandmother had her children taken — when my mum was

put in Cowper orphanage for nine years. “I tell the story of the massacre at Red Rock, the Gumbaynggirr dreaming story about the women and the sea when Gumbaynggirr kids in the 1950s would run free in the bush immersed in language and culture taught by our old people

THE NSW Government has released a new interactive map that allows the community to see the progress coastal councils are making with their Coastal Management Programs (CMPs). Local councils prepare a CMP to develop a strategic and integrated course of action for management of the coastal zone in their area. CMPs identify:

● coastal management issues ● actions required to address these issues in a strategic and integrated way ● how and when those actions are to be implemented ● costs and proposed cost-sharing arrangements ● other viable funding mechanisms. The new interactive map makes it easier for people to see

what work is underway to help manage their local coastlines, as well as how many grants their council has received through the Government’s Coastal and Estuary Grants Program. In addition to links to a relevant local council’s website for more information, the new map has clickable colour-coded icons to reflect which stage in the process the CMP is up to.

A BUSY week again on the Island, good weather and lots of run on the fairways making for excellent playing conditions and good fields. On Tuesday 5 October, we hosted 94 Mid North Coast Vets for the 3rd round of their Championships playing Individual Stableford format. In Division 1 (scratch to 15), Ross Donnelly (9) from Macksville won with 38 points from Greg McCoy with 37 points on 3 way countback from John Clancy (12 - Coffs Harbour) and Steve McNeil (9 – Dorrigo RSL). In Division 2 (16 to 22), Paul McElhinney (19) had the best round of the day with 43 points to win from Mark Stuckey (22 – Sawtell) and Dennis Ashton (18) 39 points. Division 3 (23 – 45) was closely contested with Leslie Mohr (23), Lionel Goodacre (28 – Bowraville) and Lee Fewings (32) all scoring 39 points,

with Les winning the 3 way countback. Other good scores from Jeffrey Porter (Coffs Harbour), Clyde Johnson, Sue Stuckey (Sawtell), Kevin Mulhall, Bill Parker (Bowraville) and Joe Street all with 38 points. The Ball Rundown went generously because of the Championship round all the way down to 32 points on countback The ladies played their monthly Medal on Wednesday 6 October. Cheryl Gilmour (24) was the winner of Division 1 (scratch to 25) with 65 Net from Glenys Thompson (14) with 76 Net. Gross winner was Glenys Thompson 81. In Division 2 (26 – 34), Narelle Delaney (29) scored 68 Net to win from Deidre Byrne (33) on countback from Helen Ferrero (29) from Macksville. Gross winner was Lyn Grose 96. In Division 3 (35 – 45), Linda Piccin (42) had

63 net to win from Dorothy Bunyan (37) with 76 Net. Dorothy also won the Gross. The Ball rundown went to 71 net on countback. Thursday 7 October was a great day for good golf with 113 players in the Medley Stableford sponsored by Allied Air Conditioning. A warm welcome to the 18 visiting Vets from Kew Country Club. Philip Mander (13) top scored for the day with a great 44 points to win Division 1 (scratch to 16) from Kerrie Eichorn (13) with 41 points. It was a colossal tussle in Division 2 (17 – 22) with Edward (Ted) Beaton (20) and Nathan Ison (17) and Bryan Ussher (17) all scoring 39 points, Ted winning on the 3 way countback. We had another countback in Division 3 (23 to 35), with Leanne Welsh (23) and Donald Stiegrad (27) both scoring 40 points, Leanne with the better back nine.

Other good scores from William Mann 40, Geoff McCann, Sean Coenraad, Pat Ellis all with 39 points. You needed at least 36 points in the Ball Rundown. On Friday 8 October, we continued “The Race to Royal Pines” – the monthly “Island Challenge” stroke event very generously sponsored by Toyota Service Advantage, and I’m informed that this year’s race is coming right down to the wire! Daryl Wall (13) scored a net 67 to win from Philip Mander (11) last year’s winner 68 net. Gross winner Bruce Berry 79. Best Lady’s score was Henny Oldenhove (15) with 76 net. On Saturday 9 October, I was able to schedule Glen Crow’s favourite PAR event, sponsored by Williams Building Group, who kindly supplied some additional surprises. Whilst not everybody’s “cup of tea”, we had 111 starters, and some surprisingly good scores. Division 1 (scratch to 15) was won by John Nebauer (15) with +4 from Peter Farrell (6) with +2. In Division2 (16 to 21), Joe Street (16) also scored +4 to win from Chris Thorndike (18) with +3. IT’S been a busy couple of weeks for bowling at Nambucca Heads Bowling Club. Social bowls has seen great turnouts for both men and ladies, and we are happy to have welcomed new bowlers to our club. If you are thinking of trying out bowls, please drop into the club and put your name down. Ladies’ social games are on Thursdays starting at 10:00 inside the club, mixed games are Wednesdays 12:30, and men’s games are Fridays at 12:30. We are also busy with club championship matches for men and women. A friendly mixed comp is played Sunday mornings at 10:00 also, especially for those who are still working, or can’t make it through the week. Recent results: Ladies – Minor Singles semi finals had two terrific matches. Janice Cedelland won over Margaret Flagg 25-17, and Nerida Blackford lasted in a fight out with Teresa Meehan 25-21. Special arrangements for a special friend AMY is quite fond of her Jack Russell terrier, Rosey. As part of her estate planning, Amy wishes to ensure that Rosey is lookedafter. She is advised by her solicitor that unless there are specific provisions in her will, Rosey forms part of the ‘residue’ of her estate and becomes the property of her residuary beneficiaries. This can cause difficulties if there are multiple beneficiaries and further complications can arise regarding the cost of Rosey’s care. Amy decides that it is best for Rosey, her executor and her beneficiaries for her to make special provisions for Rosey in her will. Amy instructs her solicitor to include a provision in her will to permit her friend, David to reside in her home and to care for Rosey during her lifetime. Under her will, Amy also gives her executor the sum of $50,000 to be used to pay for the outgoings and the upkeep of the property as well as providing funds to meet Rosey’s expenses, including her medical and dental treatment. Her executor is granted the discretion to apply these funds for Rosey’s care as her executor deems appropriate and to distribute any surplus funds to her residuary beneficiaries upon Rosey’s death. Amy’s solicitor recommends that Amy ensures that Rosey is microchipped and that her executor is directed to ensure that Rosey is provided with annual checkups and scans by a veterinarian to ensure that it is in fact Rosey who resides in her home as there have been instances in the past where a pet has been replaced by a ‘look-a-like’. The solicitor also explains the importance of appointing an independent executor who can monitor Rosey and David to ensure her wishes are respected and her home ultimately realised and distributed to her residuary beneficiaries. With the population planning its outdoor activities, Cancer Council NSW is sharing its sunsafe post-lockdown picnic guide to help protect us from harmful UV rays. Louise Jeffs, Community Lead at Cancer Council’s Coffs Harbour office, said the Cancer Council wants to make it as easy as possible to enjoy outdoor gatherings in a sun safe way. “Many of us are already enjoying Covid-safe picnics, and there’s lots of ways you can make sure you’re protecting yourself from the sun. “Here are our top five tips.” 1. Well, here we are - opening up week. It should be a time of excitement, but I am actually thinking I quite enjoyed lockdown. The place was less congested. The kids were happier being at home. When did you think you would hear the words, 'Barry, you have to work from home’, interspersing your meetings with time with your cat and your Diecast models and your Chillaxed playlist without any need to drive through peak hour traffic, listen to Roger from marketing rant about his latest Tinder date, take out the office bin for Mariah with her dodgy hip and all the other daily interactions you could do without. And, on top of it all, you got paid. Paid to stay home. What fresh new nirvana is that for someone who has lived a life of avoidance. It's tough, Barry. As a writer, I have intentionally chosen the life of a recluse and now you've all discovered the hidden joys of working from home - only needing to be dressed professionally from the waist up, exercise breaks, no interruptions, no workplace illnesses from some snotty-nosed accountant who thinks he's so important that he has to soldier on and infect the entire workplace. What's not to love? This logic doesn't work, however, for those in hands-on jobs. You can't build a house from your office, or take blood, or pick and pack orders, or deliver furniture and food. So, unfortunately, Barry, this utopia you speak of is unsustainable for many, but if you can continue to get away with it, good luck to you. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

This police procedural is not like the other ﬁsh in the police procedural sea. Nicola Walker (pictured, Unforgotten) teems with charisma as the titular character: a book loving, straight-talking woman who is a single mother to a bad-tempered teenager. She has moved to Scotland to head up the Marine Homicide Unit, which is busy trying to solve maritime crimes in a by-the-numbers way – until Annika arrives. It’s a police procedural with a diﬀerent atmosphere that boasts some awesome Scottish scenery.

For a split second, you could be forgiven for wondering what sort of dark doco you have stumbled across if accidentally tuning into New Gold Mountain. This fresh series is a bold move by SBS: it’s the first locally produced period drama for the network. Filmed in Victoria, the Gold Rush-era drama is a murder mystery laced with humour. Starring Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings), Yoson An (pictured, Mulan) and Dan Spielman (The Code), it’s unique in giving a Chinese perspective of life in 1800s Victorian goldfields. In tonight’s penultimate episode, Shing (An) desperately tries to find the truth.

Club President Jenna Welsh praised a stellar season for the Nambucca teenager. “What a stellar season for this young lady, playing two games each week, with her juniors team and open women, the sportsmanship and the way she supported her teammates shows maturity way beyond her years. “She displays all the key attributes that make her a role model to young girls within our club,” said Jenna. Former Club President Paul Cue was inducted as a Club Life Member for his service to the club. “Paul was President for eleven years, he also was a parent, coach and player. “Now shifting his focus to refereeing the game, the dedication, passion and commitment to the Strikers and the game we all love, he has been a pivotal attribute to the club and a very deserving inductee,” said Jenna.
