David Taylor, Mary Dal Santo, Craig Doolan, Paul Le Cerf and Perry McNally have selflessly donated hundreds of hours and jumped over extensive hurdles over the past three years to bring the Bowraville sports hub to life.

The dream of a Bowraville Sports Hub becomes a reality as construction gets underway

FROM Page 1 “The Bowraville Sports Hub will be a jewel in the valley's crown,” committee member Craig Doolan said at Friday's turning of the soil event. “This sports hub will rival the bigger areas like Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie. “This regional facility will allow us to compete and gain those big events,” he said. Mr Doolan thanked the relevant government bodies for their contributions. “Without the support of the state government and the Nambucca Valley Council this wouldn’t be happening.” Nambucca Valley Mayor Cr Rhonda Hoban proudly attended the event and said, “It has been a long process so I can understand why all of the committee and volunteers involved in this are excited to finally see construction

start as it has been a long road to get to this point. “I would like to congratulate everybody who has been involved and wish everyone the best for the rest of the construction phase.” The Bowraville Sports Hub will offer state of the art sports facilities for the youth in the Nambucca Valley, enabling them to train and compete in a variety of different sports. Local businesses in the Valley have donated time and resources to the project in order to make this sports hub a reality. Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey, who also attended the event, was proud to see such a facility opening in regional NSW. “The community has in kind donations and sponsorship from local businesses to help lower the cost,” she said. Works are expected to be completed early 2022.

But if the same population of koalas is being threatened by a logging project, it’s been rubber stamped on the basis of 20-year-old environmental assessments.” An RFA needs to be “founded on the latest scientific knowledge on climate and the state of our forest ecosystems” to be robust, Morris said. “We have known for years

that as the climate changes, fires will follow. “And yet the North East RFA was renewed without an assessment of how climate change will impact the health and resilience of our native forest ecosystems. “Less than 12 months later, fires began ravaging native forests across the region.” NEFA spokesperson Susie Russell said she was “reasonably optimistic” the legal challenge to the current RFA will be successful. “I find it hard to believe any judge would consider extending a logging permit for what is essentially an indefinite period without considering new information,” she said.

“I don’t think any judge could say that’s a reasonable way of making decisions.” Local NEFA member Zianna Faud said Newry State Forest, Wild Cattle Creek and Kalang Headwaters were among nearby areas facing the most immediate threats from logging, which would further endanger a koala population “on the brink of extinction”. The current RFA “pretty much gives the government and the Forestry Corporation free rein. Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) solicitors, acting on behalf of conservation group North East Forest Alliance (NEFA), have served papers on the Commonwealth and NSW Governments, challenging an RFA that was signed in 2000 and renewed in 2018 for another 20 years. The agreement exempts logging in native forests along the coast between Sydney and the Queensland border from federal laws requiring a biodiversity assessment and approval process. In a bid for these exemptions to be scrapped,

the EDO will argue that when the RFA was renewed, the Commonwealth did not take into account the current status of endangered species, the state of old-growth forests or climate change, and that it was required to do so. EDO Chief Executive Officer David Morris said the 2018 renewal of the RFA failed to ensure that the laws regulating logging in NSW forests remained up to date and fit for purpose. "We are challenging the Federal Government over its failure to assess how another 20-plus years of logging, against a background of a changing climate, will impact our forest ecosystems, endangered species and old-growth forests. The

ON 5 August 2021 the Australian Federal Government released the first Commonwealth Closing the Gap Implementation Plan, committing 1.1 billion to achieve Closing the Gap outcomes. This was a bi-partisan achievement, with both sides of politics working together. The Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, “This is a plan that’s been led together with Indigenous leaders, to back Indigenous communities. “We’re doing things differently with accountability and transparency, and in true partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders. “This is a truly whole-ofgovernment plan, developed by Ministers, departments and agencies across the “Commonwealth with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partners, in particular the Coalition of Peaks. “This is a practical plan that builds from the ground up by making good on the harm caused to Stolen Generations survivors to supporting this

A statewide implementation plan has been released to address the disproportionate disadvantage experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) people. Bowraville Mission was one of the initial nine missions that benefited from the R2H program. “As part of R2H roads have been resurfaced, drainage and the services were relocated from Aboriginal Land Council responsibility to Council,” said Mr Coulter. The Bellwood Mission, located in Nambucca Heads, will soon have similar works carried out as part of the R2H program. Council is also working on establishing more social housing in Nambucca Valley. THE installation of a dining parklet couldn’t have come at a better time for local Macksville business Café Cha Cha in August 2020. With Covid-19 restrictions making the hospitality industry difficult the dining parklet was welcomed by the café and local patrons with open arms as it provided the much needed space for those people wishing to dine in at the café. The parklet project was two

years in the pipelines with the construction being a team effort. The Men’s Shed in Macksville, Dan Welsh from Beyond Expectations, Nambucca Valley Council, Forestry Corporation, Boral, Paul Miller and Jack Edwards were all a part of the fabulous team that made this parklet a reality. The dining parklet is mobile and will be moving to the next location in August/September this year. “We are proposing to move the parklet in Macksville to a space near ‘La Honey’ who are keen to have it

With the parklet moving from the main street of the CBD, the Nambucca Valley Council has been donated more timber from Forestry Corporation and Boral and will be looking to do timber cladding on the external walls. .

STUARTS Point Public School is aiming big for its little school, launching a fundraising raffle for Father’s Day. “Stuarts Point Public School straddles the Macleay and Nambucca valleys hidden on the coast behind Mount Yarrahapinni,” Cally Haase, President of the P&C for the school, told News Of The Area. “We are a very small school with only 58 kids and

have really struggled this year with fundraising due to COVID. “So, our new P&C committee thought outside the box and came up with an online raffle for Father's Day. “We've had some amazing donations from very generous businesses such as a night at Rydges in Port Macquarie, a weekend at a local retreat, Yarralen and various vouchers for meat, petrol and meals from locals too. “Our total prize pool in the raffle now stands at just over $1,000. “The funds raised will go towards refurbishing our antiquated classrooms

U3A Nambucca Valley is a voluntary organisation running courses, groups and activities covering a wide range of interests within the Nambucca community. On Wednesday 28 July, the U3A held an Open Day at the Macksville Ex-Services Club, offering information and enrolments for the 35 individual courses taking place during the second semester. News Of The Area spoke with U3A Nambucca Valley Vice President Wendy Montagne and Course Coordinator Helen Scotta on the benefits of U3A to the community. Helen Scotta said, “Members discover talents they never knew they had.” The event was buzzing with people joining up to learn new crafts. “U3A creates new friendships, bringing people together in a non-judgemental way,” said Wendy Montagne. The Nambucca Valley has a lot of hidden talent, and just because a person has retired doesn’t mean they are no longer useful. U3A gives newcomers to the community a safe environment to meet new people, and learn new skills.

Autumn Lodge’s Auxiliary also provided numerous social outings such as going to the Bowraville Theatre to see the Valley Performers, funds for the bus and lunches out. “The Auxiliary have been great ambassadors and made a big difference within our community,” said Jenny Zirkler,

In addition to delivering more than 4,500 vaccinations since April, the Nambucca Healthcare Centre team has been assisting with meeting demand for Covid-19 testing that saw “a dramatic increase” in response to the exposure scare in Coffs Harbour in late July before dropping off briefly and ramping up again following the recent lockdowns in areas such as Newcastle, Armidale and

LOCALS are being urged to check the Nambucca Healthcare Centre website for Pfizer appointment availability or download the HOTDOC app to receive alerts about new appointments opening up “rather than clogging up the phone lines with enquiries”, as demand for the vaccine continues to outpace supply in the Valley. Sheree Smith, Practice Manager at Nambucca Healthcare Centre, which administers Covid-19 vaccines through Nambucca Respiratory Clinic, said all current Pfizer stock had been allocated at the time of this issue going to print and appointments will only be reopened once new stock has arrived. “We opened over 100 new appointments for first doses during August just last week. “We are due another delivery of 420 next week, half of which will be reserved for second doses,” she said, adding that stock was delivered roughly every fortnight and “new appointments can open up at any time when a delivery of stock is received”. Current wait times for appointments may be eased after the federal government announced on August 5 that an additional 180,000 Pfizer vaccines would be provided to New South Wales,

Real Estate Gift, Public Trustee and Centrelink WILLIAM lives with his mother, Michelle. She has a history of mental illness and at the age of 75 years, William also becomes her carer. William and Michelle visit a solicitor together and ask the solicitor to transfer Michelle’s home into William’s name by way of a gift. The transfer proceeds and William pays stamp duty on the market value of the property. Two years later, the New South Wales Trustee & Guardian (Public Trustee) is appointed as Michelle’s financial manager and Michelle moves into an aged care facility. When the Public Trustee discovers the transfer of Michelle's property, it commences proceedings against William, seeking orders that the property be transferred back into Michelle’s name. The Court finds that William was in a position of influence over his mother and that her state of health made her vulnerable. The Court notes that Michelle did not receive independent legal advice. The Court declares that the transfer resulted from unconscionable conduct and orders the retransfer of the home back to Michelle. In addition, the Public Trustee sought compensation from William on the basis that the gifting of the home reduced Michelle’s pension by $150 per fortnight. The Public Trustee also sought compensation on Michelle’s behalf because when entering the aged care facility, she was unable to pay a refundable accommodation deposit and was therefore charged a daily accommodation payment of $50. The Court orders that William pay “equitable compensation” to the Public Trustee of $150,000, in addition to the retransfer of the home and the payment of the Public Trustee’s legal costs. William has insufficient funds to pay the Court ordered compensation and enters voluntary bankruptcy, which normally lasts for three years and one day. DEAR News Of The Area, I AM writing in support of the views of Rhonda Davies (‘Library Concerns’, News Of The Area, p13, August 6 Edition) in relation to the Extension Project Plans for Nambucca Library. There are significant public safety issues arising from the present design plans which need to be further explored. The present courtyard area on this plan would be landscaped, furnished with seating and decorative colonnades and no doubt would look attractive. However it would be closed off to vehicles and the only vehicular access to the site would be via a timed Loading Zone. This means that any performers or Main Hall users would need to unload on Ridge Street in the line of oncoming traffic. As we know, Ridge Street leads to the busiest intersection of traffic in the whole of Nambucca Heads and is becoming more congested as time goes by. In fact New South Wales Police have expressed concerns in relation to these plans. They have advised that the loading and unloading of passengers and performers on such a busy street via a timed Loading Zone puts the public at risk of accidents and therefore should be reconsidered. For this reason we need vehicular access to the courtyard to be maintained. On the existing plan there is to be a fence and a locked gate to control access to this newly landscaped courtyard which will be opened up by librarians when the library is open. There will be no access to the facility for most of the weekend, evenings or on public holidays. Public spaces should be open to the public and visitors at all times and particularly

at leisure times outside of the working week. A locked off facility sends unwelcome messages to visitors and residents alike. We would have a beautiful courtyard with a beast of a plan to control it. There would be a $2 million development shut off for most of the time behind a locked gate. This is not good town planning. Most of us support the idea of the development of library facilities and understand the need for additional space for library staff and users . However this site is too constrained to offer sufficient expansion that would serve the needs of the library into the twenty-first century. If this development proceeds, the Main Hall would be much less attractive as a Performance Venue due to the public safety risks around the issue of access. I have been a concert organizer for many years but would not be prepared to risk public safety by organizing future concerts should these plans come to fruition. There are many others of the same opinion as myself. In time the Main Hall is likely to attract fewer bookings and the great facilities we have created in the hall by the grants we have successfully achieved over the past 12 years will be of little value to our community. You cannot have a successful Performance Venue with such limited facilities for access and this is the only sizable venue in the Nambucca Valley that serves the purpose of large public gatherings. There is a lot to lose if these plans are developed. They need to be reconsidered so that they reflect the needs and aspirations of our community.

Our elderly mother spends her days watching Sky News, interspersed with Youtube clips from far right US Conspiracy groups. She is aggressive and argumentative continually wanting to talk about the sea level, quoting someone called Alan or Pauline, and blaming Covid outbreaks on minority racial groups. Speaking of Covid; she bounces between claiming “it’s just the flu” to panicking and trying to book an instant vaccination whenever it looks like there is a local outbreak – only to cancel her appointment when the urgency subsides. The other day we found a packet of Ivermectin tablets in her bathroom. What should we do? Please help, Don. Dear Don, Gosh, there are more layers to this conundrum than an N95 mask. When people are faced with uncertainty, they will seek all sorts of ways to make sense of the world and sometimes those sense-making avenues have agendas that may be more appealing than the dry and dreary statistics and solutions offered by scientists. Conspiracy theorists spruiking the idea of shape-shifting lizards taking human forms in a plot to rule the world are probably far more entertaining than world leaders on the back foot due to the everchanging parameters of a pandemic. Nivea from Byron with her Certified Juice Therapy Certificate is also no doubt more interesting than the world's leading immunologists and disease experts, but that is not a good enough reason to take her theories on board. Unfortunately, your elderly mother's good old confirmation bias is in full swing and there may not be a lot you can do to change that. Ultimately, you may need to agree to disagree for your own sanity. Change the subject to something less emotive (but do let her know that the dosage rates for black market Ivermectin are probably for horses, not humans).

While her father died many years ago, her mum passed away this July, after the painting was completed. THERE was much to celebrate on Friday morning with the latest group of Nambucca Vocational College students completing their Individual Support Work Ready course and being surprised with job offers. The students completed their four-week training course, with work placements at Riverside Gardens and Autumn Lodge, and were offered traineeships by these businesses. Their new jobs will also contribute towards achieving a Certificate III in Individual Support. It’s a unique opportunity to get paid, build skills and gain a qualification too. Student Madison Russell said, “The course has been fun and rewarding. I’ve learnt many skills, big and small, which will be invaluable to

an early day after he flew out to a 11-2 lead. Paul CEO Coulton had other ideas and wasn’t going to let Tommy Turbo get away with it that easily. Both players played great bowls and Paul managed to continually claw back the margin and after a while it was 21 all. In an entertaining game that would’ve packed the Sydney Cricket Ground, Paul eventually came away with the victory 31 - 26. Special mention goes to Graham ‘the good brother’ Hunt and Chris Brownlie who put up a tremendous effort at the championship of club champion pairs. After defeating Urunga on Saturday in a thrilling match 19 - 17, they came up against Westport who were the favourites to win the tournament. Westport had Peter Taylor, who has won more state titles

than Phar Lap had started. The Nambucca men got off to a solid start, but after 8 ends were down 13 - 2 and were going to be facing a mammoth task to win from here.

Graham and Chris knuckled down and showed their class, and through brilliant bowls got the score back to 14 - 12 after 16 ends. With the wind behind their backs, and the momentum on their side, the Nambucca duo forged ahead 18 - 14 and a big win loomed. However, Taylor and his partner claimed the last two ends and picked up 4 shots and in the process forced an extra end. Unfortunately, the Westport team picked up 1 shot and the win. Graham and Chris put in a great effort and showed plenty of determination, played excellent bowls and represented the club to the

highest level. A reminder to everyone that Wednesday Club selected triples start at 1pm and names are to be in by no later than 11.30am. Club selected triples is a great day to get along with fun for everyone, especially newer bowlers and those that are happy to mix and play with different people which is always fun and entertaining. This week is another busy week with club selected triples on Wednesday, nominated fours / triples on Friday at 1pm, the quarter finals of the minor singles on Saturday at 1pm and the semi final of the minor singles on Sunday at 1pm. Also, next weekend sees Ken Darcy Rostron travel to South West Rocks for the championship of club champion singles. We wish Darcy the best of luck.

Set in the un-politically correct ’80s, The Newsreader is poised to be one of the breakout shows of the year. Created and co-written by Matt Lucas (Five Bedrooms) and directed by Emma Freeman (Puberty Blues), the biting and moving six-episode miniseries premieres tonight. Anna Torv (Fringe, pictured) is uncompromising newsreader Helen, who struggles to be taken seriously by her superiors. Just before a tumultuous set of events, including the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger and the Russell Street bombing, she ﬁnds herself paired with a new co-anchor: inexperienced, ambitious newcomer Dale (Sam Reid, Lambs of God). William McInnes stars as the power-hungry heads of news.

There are few shows that can settle in comfortably anywhere. When it comes to the singing juggernaut The Voice, fans will follow wherever it wanders, and so will the stars. At its new home on Seven, the mega reality TV show has hardly needed to ﬁnd its groove. New coach Jessica Mauboy brings enthusiasm and candour, while familiar mentors Rita Ora (The Voice UK) and Keith Urban (The Voice Australia season one) join returning coach Guy Sebastian with their own particular self-assured presence. As always, veteran host Sonia Kruger (above) scores all the points for pizzazz and style. Tonight, the most unpredictable, aﬀecting slice of the show, the blind auditions, continue.

The final episode of this soapy period drama, penned by Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes, arrives tonight. Without giving too much away, there is a lot to digest and not everyone will find it palatable. Will viewers be left throwing their hands in the air in exasperation? Will they need tissues to help stem the flow of tears and emotions? Or will they witness the episode’s final moments with a sense of closure? Odds are on the first scenario. Charles (Jack Bardoe, above right) receives an olive branch that puts him in danger. Meanwhile, James (Philip Glenister) must find a way to defend Charles’ honour before he loses Lady Maria (Ella Purnell).

IT was another busy week for Nambucca Heads bowlers, which saw players cover more ground than the early explorers. On Wednesday 4 August, a smaller than usual number of players turned out for club selected triples. Only 26 players were on the green and it would’ve been more, had the over 50’s not been on the previous day, as numerous players were left nursing hangovers. The winners for the day were Stan Flack, Peter wide bowls Wallis and Bruce Mason. Second place went to

Eliza Brown, Ken Brown and Ken Rostron. Third place went to Maurie Roberts, Billy the bookies pal Blair and Grant Lawrence. The lucky losers were Jan Brown, Don Dollar Lean and Darren Jones, who has recently come back to play at Nambucca. The lucky bowler was Eliza Brown who won $15 but couldn’t win the jackpot of $240. Friday 6 August attracted 60 bowlers, mainly due to the fact that Bob ‘Ramjet’ Sutton was on the cards and in charge. I’d like to say that CONTINUED Page 12
