Headland Rescue! By Marian SAMPSON THE Port Stephens SES were called out this weekend to rescue a man who had fallen from a cliff on the rocky headland of Dark Point, north of Hawks Nest. Alysha Springett Deputy Unit Commander and Training & Coordinator of the SES Port Stephens Unit told News Of The Area, “At approximately 1:30pm, Port Stephens SES were paged to a General Land Rescue (GLR) at Hawks Nest, after a person fell from the cliffs at Dark Point Headland.” A team of five accredited SES Rescue Operators and two 4WD Rescue vehicles attended and made their way out to the headland. “The SES worked alongside

NSW Ambulance, NSW Police and Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew to provide first aid on the casualty and move him to a safer location in preparation for a winch recovery from the rocks,” she said. It took the combined efforts of the four agencies three hours for the casualty to be safely winched into the rescue helicopter and transported to hospital for further treatment. The team at SES Port Stephens are hoping they make a full recovery. The SES responds to rescues, floods, fire and events such as fallen trees. The teams are made up of volunteers from the community that band together to help keep our community safe. The permits provide access to some of the region’s most pristine beaches, stretching from Kylies Beach in the north, down to Hawks Nest in the south. But the team at MidCoast Council are keen to remind 4WD’ers that our beach environments are sensitive and dynamic, and that holding a permit comes with a responsibility to protect both the environment and other beach users. “It’s important that beach drivers are considerate of others, and respectful of their surroundings,” said Paul De Szell, MidCoast Council’s Director of Community Spaces and Services. “There are rules that apply, not only for the safety of all beach users, but to help protect the dune environment.” Permit-holders are responsible for complying with beach driving rules which

Scamwatch is warning Australians of scams that may attempt to gain personal information and lead to financial loss. To avoid a vaccination scam residents are encouraged to protect themselves with the following advice. Don’t give personal information to someone who calls you about the vaccine. Don’t click on links in unexpected emails or text messages. Don’t pay to get on a vaccination list – COVID-19 vaccines will be free for everyone living in Australia. Don’t pay for early access to a vaccine as there is no early access to these vaccines.

Residents will not need a prescription from a GP to get vaccinated. A NSW Health statement said, “We will never ask for bank, credit card or other payment details. “COVID-19 vaccinations are voluntary and free.” If you are asked for any of this information by someone claiming to provide COVID-19 vaccines, it is a scam and should be reported to Scamwatch via their website. For anyone wishing to book a COVID-19 vaccine appointment, follow the Australian Government Department of Health website secured with a lock icon next to the web address. This is a secure website that will assess your eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine and will lead you to a booking website if eligible. While a large proportion of the state are subject to Stay at Home Orders, the NSW Government has given a reprieve to children who live across 2 households. The Stay at Home Orders which apply to those living and working in the Greater Sydney, Central Coast, Blue Mountains and Wollongong areas caused many to be concerned that they would not see their children (or parents) for the duration of the 'lockdown'. However the Public Health Order issued by Health Minister Brad Hazzard includes "reasonable excuses" for not complying with the Order, one of which is "to give effect to new and existing arrangements for access to, and contact between, parents and children or siblings".

This means that even if the children or a parent live in a "lockdown area", the parents are still permitted to transport the children between their respective homes, so children can continue to spend time with each parent and their siblings. The position of the Family Law Courts has not changed, and Chief Justice Will Alstergren continues to encourage parents to try to reach a practical solution, and be sensible and reasonable in their consideration of the issue, in light of the difficulties being experienced across the country. Liability limited by a scheme approved under Professional Standards Legislation

include driving only between the high and low tide marks, using only designated access points, observing a maximum speed limit of 40km / hour (or 15km / hour when within 100m of others), and remaining at least 15m away from pedestrians at all times. Council rangers and NSW Police are authorised to enforce the rules, with fines and permit cancellation in place for those who do not comply. access points, undertaking important dune rehabilitation works and weed control, and implementing a series of initiatives to assist in the protection of shore bird habitats. “Our message to all beach-goers is about sharing the shore responsibly, whether that’s by adhering to beach driving rules, controlling dogs on our dog-friendly beaches, or taking your rubbish home with you. “Our beaches are natural assets that we can be proud of and should work together to protect.” Beach access vehicle permits can be purchased from all Council Customer Service locations as well as through authorised resellers. Rest In Peace Miss Honey By Tara CAMPBELL MISS Honey, the koala from Pindimar, made news in the NOTA in late June after Sarah Dryburgh and her family found Honey on their non-urban block, after which she was taken to Port Stephens Koalas and diagnosed with Chlamydia and cataracts. Although Honey was given the best support from Port Stephens Koalas, Sarah issued the following statement to a community group who had been following updates on the Koala. “With the heaviest of hearts I received a phone call this afternoon to let me know the beautiful Honey girl passed away this afternoon. “She had been unwell the last week, seeing the vet a few times and spending time in ICU as they could not get her core temperature up and she was cold,” Sarah wrote. The Dryburgh family was hoping that one day Honey would be recovered well enough to be released back in Pindimar, but unfortunately Honey didn’t make it. Sarah went on to thank the staff at Port Stephens Koalas who tended to Honey, ensuring the best care with “fabulous gum leaves” and “love in her final weeks”. Although a devastating end to Miss Honey’s story, Sarah believes that this situation may be an opportunity to learn. “If there is one thing to take away from this, it’s that if you see or find a Australian mammal and you think something is wrong, please contact WINC (Wildlife in Need of Care) and advise them on the situation,” she wrote. WINC will make a judgement on the

situation of the animal and advise the next course of action. “If we didn’t do that for Honey she most

probably would have suffered and we’re glad this wasn’t the case.” Rest in Peace Honey.

USE of the Service NSW QR code will be mandatory at all workplaces and retail businesses from Monday 12 July. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said expanding the mandate would give NSW Health contact tracers realtime access to QR code data from a greater number of venues including supermarkets, retail stores, gyms and offices. “This is about keeping our local customers and staff safe and getting all businesses open again as soon as possible,” Mr Martin said. “We know the Delta variant of COVID-19 moves quickly and we must do everything we can to get it under control. “While many retail businesses, including large supermarkets and hardware chains, have voluntarily adopted the Service NSW QR code, this measure will ensure check-in rates are high across the board and contact tracers have access to reliable and comprehensive records.” From 12 July, these businesses will need to display the Service NSW QR code and take

reasonable steps to ensure people entering their premises check-in using the Service NSW QR codes or digital sign-in sheet: ● Retail businesses and supermarkets ● Individual shops within shopping centres ● Shopping centres will also be asked to display QR codes at entry points where practicable ● Gyms ● Offices, including call centres ● Manufacturing and warehousing ● Universities and TAFE ● Schools including teachers and visitors (such as parents and contractors) but excluding students. Businesses such as hospitality and hairdressers that were already using the NSW Government QR code system will also need to ensure staff and visitors such as maintenance workers and delivery drivers check-in, when they resume services after the lockdown period.

Hospitality businesses will now need to extend the use of the Service NSW COVID-Safe check-in to all customers including takeaway orders. Businesses that fail to comply with the new health order requirements may be subject to fines and in case of flagrant breaches, temporary closure orders. “There is no excuse not to check-in everywhere you can – local businesses and customers all have a part to play to keep the community safe,” Mr Martin said. “In the same way customers routinely check into cafes, restaurants and bars, we need them to adopt the same approach when visiting a supermarket, retail store and workplace. “Inspectors have been asked to monitor the situation alongside the NSW Police.” The Service NSW COVID-Safe check-in is easy for customers to use from within the Service NSW app. There are more than 5.2 million active users of the Service NSW app. The data captured by the Service NSW COVID-Safe check-in is only used for the purposes of contact tracing by NSW Health. It is deleted after 28 days. MidCoast Council’s Barrington Coast and Gallery staff is working with the community to deliver the Barrington Coast bEATS Festival and The Tanks Art Trail thanks to the support of the NSW Government’s Regional Tourism Bushfire Recovery Grant of $145,000. “The month-long bEATS Festival and Art Trail will deliver economic benefits to our region through increased visitation and

spend, along with creating more reasons for visitors to extend their stay ‘just one more night’ and to expand their exploration of our region,” said Council’s Manager Growth, Economic Development and Tourism, Deb Tuckerman. “Obviously we’re hoping COVID will not impact our plans for October.” The bEATS Festival will sit between the established Wingham Akoostik Festival, Old Bar Festival, Taree Show and Forster Tuncurry’s Lakeside Festival – providing an appealing festival program for locals and visitors throughout the spring months. THE NSW Government’s Dine and Discover incentive is being extended and expanded to support businesses impacted by the recent COVID-19 restrictions. The vouchers were originally intended to end in June, however were extended due to over half the

vouchers still unused and were extended until the end of July. Due to state-wide restrictions and Greater Sydney lockdown, Treasurer Dominic Perrottet announced plans to extend this scheme until August 31. The Dine and Discover scheme now includes takeaway food orders on

the condition that food is directly delivered by the restaurant or café. Food cannot be picked up or delivered by a third-party delivery platform (including Deliveroo, Menulog, UberEats etc). Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said that the vouchers have been popular and have played a vital part

For an insight into what we will see at the exhibition later this year, we checked in with the school’s visual arts teacher Sue Cross and head of humanities Vanessa Shultz. “Our Visual Arts students are very busy planning their Body of Works,” said Sue. “Themes are quite wide-ranging, including

the participation of women in sport, interpretations of typical Australian landscapes and works that have been inspired by foreign places.” One student has been working on a series of drawings based on the selfportraits of favourite artists, using different mediums and a variety of media. Another is experimenting with perspective and tones. “The Award is an exceptional partnership between the school and GIG,” said Vanessa. “Galleries in the Gardens

has given our students such an amazing opportunity to participate in the world of the artist. “Being able to see their work in The Gallery, viewed by members of the public, receiving accolades for their talent – these experiences are so special for the students at Bulahdelah.” In its second year now, the Award was established by GIG as part of its commitment to our community. Extended to the Bulahdelah Central School final year art students, it fosters participation in

THIS weekend Myall Coast would be preparing for the annual Stroud Brickthrowing and Rolling Pin competition. Unfortunately like many other events, organisers have decided to postpone the event from 10 July until 2 October 2021 for the safety of all involved. 2021 marks the 60th year of the competition and although the event has always taken place in July, locals took to the Stroud

Oklahoma U.S.A, in Ontario Canada and here in New South Wales, Australia. The United Kingdom and United States of America held their first contests in 1960 and in 1961. Australia and Canada joined in. In 1962 Australia suggested a women’s rolling pin contest and since then the contest has been held for six decades. Join in on the fun on the October long weekend to experience bricks tossed, rolling pins hurled and rubber chickens chucked, as well as food stalls, markets and entertainment for the whole family.

Smart Meters: how do they work?

STROUD Road residents are set to be a part of an innovative new approach to water management in the region, with MidCoast Council undertaking its firstever trial of digital water meters in the community from July. Digital water meters, or ‘smart meters’ as they’re more commonly known, provide instantaneous water consumption data and can help customers better understand their own water use. Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said the Stroud Road trial would run for at least three months and would allow Council to assess the effectiveness of the technology. “We’ll be installing smart meters at all residential and commercial properties in Stroud Road and using the trial to evaluate current data analysis models, identify risks and barriers, and gauge

community acceptance,” he said. “This will give us the information we need to develop a business case together with a cost analysis to help us decide on the roll out of the technology across the region. “It will also help us better understand how our customers use water and allow us to flag any leaks or abnormal usage with them directly. “They’ll be able to find and repair leaks quickly, helping them avoid large bills and cut down on water wastage.” Following the trial, the smart meters will remain in place and residents will be able to track their water use via a smartphone app and website login. Mr Scott said this would give customers greater control over their water use and their home budgets. “Having access to up-todate data is going to allow our customers to understand

how they’re using water, where potential savings can be made, and what to expect when they receive their quarterly bills so there are no nasty shocks.”

Smart meters were identified as an effective tool for reducing water use in Council’s most recent Integrated Water Cycle Management Strategy, Our

Water, Our Future. It has been estimated that the use of a smart meter can reduce water consumption inside the home by up to five per cent.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club TUESDAY 29 June: Social bowls plus the Semi Final of the Club Minor Singles Competition played. Format for social play was two games of three bowls Triples, 15 ends only bowled due to rain. Dawn Jones, Wendy Jones and Sandra Leisemann took an early lead and capitalised, defeating Sheril Johnson, Lyn Nightingale and Robyn Webster 21 v 14. Jan Coomer, Jill McBride and Dale Winter held a four shot lead on the 8th end (7 v 3), then Sheila Rattray, Dorothy Thompson and Robyn Beaumont decided to join the game. They won the next four ends, adding eleven points to their tally, gaining the lead 14 v7 and came out winners 14 v 9. The winners on the day winning with the lowest margin were Sheila, Dorothy and Robyn. The Singles Semi Final first, Lynda Richards v Irene Roberts. Lynda held a narrow lead from the start, on the 8th end just a two shot difference in the score, things didn’t get

any easier Irene never “giving up”. It took 24 ends, before Lynda claimed victory 26 v 14. Bette Saillard v Ingrid Luck, this contest lasted 26 ends, Bette held a narrow lead until the 5th end (6 v 3), then Ingrid won the next five ends, now holding a six point lead, 12 v 6. By the 18th end Ingrid was still in front by two shots, 16 v 14. The next three ends eventuated in Bette taking control and gaining a five shot lead, 21 v16, Ingrid managed a great comeback on the 25th end Ingrid 21 v Bette 24 still anyone’s game. Bev Dunn, Irene Roberts and Jill McBride had a lead of seven on the 7th end v Lyn Nightingale, Dorothy Thompson and Loretta Baker. The Neat four ends were won by Loretta’s team gaining eleven points and eventually winning 13 v 10. Ingrid Luck, Bev Rhodes and Dale Winter started strongly but by the 10th end Sheila Rattray, Pam Gilchrist and Karen McPhie had reduced their deficit and the score was nine 9 all. Karen’s team won 11 v 10. Not sure what was happening on Rink seven, Dawn Jones, Judy McGavock and Robyn Webster on the 8th end 22 v Judi Polak, Dawn May and Sandra Leisemann 0. A bit difficult to make a comeback from here, no prize for guessing the winners, Robyn’s team 25 v 3. The Final of the Minor Singles was decided after 27 ends, a very evenly matched competition between Bette Saillard v Lynda Richards. JUST as things were freeing up it’s “here we go again!”. Masks are mandatory inside retail establishments, number restrictions in homes are in place and of course, the cancellation of Progress Association and Reference Group meetings. Unfortunately, our presentations by State Member, Kate Washington and the new President of our Lions Club, both had to be postponed. Our only advice to all is to take heed of the warnings, get vaccinated, pull the shutters down and stay warm. Meanwhile there has been some movement at the station, which should be of interest to the community. Council has been busy in preparing for the election of Councillors to be held on September 4 2021. Note that we represent 5% of the Shire population and every vote is needed from this neck of the Shire to ensure we have continued representation. Len Roberts, our current Councillor has indicated he will run again and will need your support. Remember that voting is compulsory and if

not already enrolled, you must do so before July 26. Council has announced the appointment of a consultant to conduct concept planning to upgrade the Tea Gardens sewer network. This new main will relieve pressure on the existing network and reduce the risk of overflows. Information sessions will be held in Tea Gardens and the concept design is expected to be completed early December. Again with Council, we can advise that repairs have been conducted on both the Moira Pde and Winda Woppa ramps, although we maintain these repairs are stopgap only and that a full replacement is required. The axle breaking pot holes have been filled and work has begun on the new four-man fish cleaning table at Moira Pde. The proposed new ramp in Apex Park is still in the design stage and it is hoped the project will be completed by the December holiday period. The suggested approval for one-way footpaths on the Singing Bridge for wheeled traffic, is under consideration and a decision will hopefully arrive by the end of July. The Sand Transfer System underwent its second operation in June, just in time for a strong low which removed the first few days of work. We are pleased to report the remainder of transfer was very successful and the beach is sporting a healthy profile. The construction of the new Tea Gardens Slipway is now well advanced and due for completion in July. It will be a huge improvement to the outdated

Maritime are hopeful that the operation will be completed in a few weeks. The Pool Subcommittee recently met with Council management and reported that a constructive and helpful discussion took place. They are seeking further signatures to their petition and it is clear that the community wants the pool open and that improvements made to pool facilities. They are seeking people who may be interested in joining a steering group to design, cost and seek grant funding. By Cr Len ROBERTS Residential Flat Building – Hawks Nest COUNCIL did not approve the development and the proponent appealed the refusal in the Land and Environment Court. The matter was listed for a directions

hearing on 23 March 2020. At the directions hearing the registrar advised that due to COVID-19 the Court is only listing matters for Telephone s.34 Conferences and listed proceedings for 26 October 2020 and 2 November 2020. The s.34 conciliation conference was held before Commissioner Walsh online. There was some negotiation between the parties in relation to urban design / planning outcomes and an agreement could not be reached. On 12 April 2021 a further directions hearing was held, after the applicant's solicitor had ceased to act in the matter. This resulted in the applicants' experts not being given instructions to confer with Council experts and as such joint reports were not able to be prepared in keeping with the court schedule. The new solicitor advised that he would seek for the hearing to be vacated and that amended plans were being prepared. The proceedings are now fixed for hearing on 6, 7 and 8 September 2021.

beaten by Club Champion, Jeff Baker 31-19. Peter Gurney continued his winning ways accounting for Greg Brown 31-14. John Slater got off to a bad start and was never in the game against Ross Barry. Ross played some beautiful draw bowls and easily won the match 31-11. Similarly, Rob Young drew a tough opponent in former Club Champion, Dennis Ashbridge and he was defeated, 31-7. By John EDWARDS LOCAL masked darts players made their way to the Hawks Nest Golf Club on 1 July for their weekly Thursday Night Darts competition. The winner on the night was John Edwards, with Trevor Peirson finishing runner up. Lyn Peirson was the highest scorer in the ladies competition with 95. The Men’s Highest Score was Mick Russom with 138. Darts are on every Thursday night at the Golf Club. Names need to be submitted by 7.30pm. Darts are available if required and everyone is welcome.
