MYALL Lakes Aquatic Club recently celebrated 50-years since the Myall Lakes Yacht Club was first formed in 1970. Due to COVID-19, festivities planned for this 50-year milestone in 2020 were necessarily postponed. Finally, on Saturday 27 March 2021, the 50th anniversary of the Club was celebrated in style at Mumm’s on the Myall. The elegant evening was launched with all guests receiving a commemorative 50th anniversary polo shirt, stubby cooler and burgee, the flag displaying the 50th anniversary emblem of the Club. The evening was attended by over 85 guests of current and past members, some travelling from remote locations to be part of this significant milestone celebration. In July 2003, a single club was formed, Myall Lakes Aquatic Club (MLAC), incorporating the aims and objectives of both Myall Lakes Yacht Club and Myall Boating Club, due to the rising costs of public liability insurance and ongoing running costs of running the two clubs. Myall Lakes Aquatic Club is a social group of boaters who enjoy the magnificent environment of a little known RAMSAR listed aquatic wonderland called Myall Lakes. Over the Club’s 50 years, many notable achievements have been

reached. They include the establishment of the sewage pump-out boat, Independence, and the sewage pump-out facility at Bombah Point. Both facilities aid in ensuring the continued preservation of a pristine, RAMSAR listed waterway. The Club is also committed to maintaining wharves and other local infrastructure needed for safe boating both in the Myall River and on Myall Lakes. MLAC continues to work closely with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to ensure safe boating on the Myall well into the future. The Fred Hollows Foundation is seeking the “Fred’s” in our community. People who go above and beyond, are driven by their passion and make a very real difference to the lives of others – just as Fred Hollows did throughout his life. The Fred Awards celebrate people who care for others in a decent, practical and no-nonsense way, like Fred did. The Awards are rooted in Fred’s character as a great Australian and his values of kindness, compassion and integrity. Nominations are open Australia-wide until 11.59pm on Friday 23 July 2021. The Fred Hollows 2021 Humanitarian will be chosen by Australians via public

In launching the Fred Awards, Gabi Hollows said she was looking for someone who goes out of their way to care for others and create a more egalitarian world. “True humanitarians are everyday people who take the initiative to make the world around them a better place. Anyone can be a humanitarian,” Gabi said. “More than ever, the past year has shown us the importance of people in their communities supporting each other. “That’s everyday humanitarianism – something that Fred lived and breathed. “Fred used to say he had great faith in the nature of the average Australian, and I think his faith was wellplaced. “Aussies have been our most generous supporters. “We are a global charity,

but one thing I’ll always be proud of is our heritage in Australia. “I know Fred would be proud of this too,” she said. Legendary Australian journalist Ray Martin, a longtime friend of Fred’s and The Foundation’s first Chair, said he was proud to join Gabi on the judging panel. “I’ve met countless individuals in my time and Professor Fred Hollows was the consummate humanitarian. The Federal Government has announced proposed amendments to the Unfair Contract Scheme which will expand on the current unfair contract term provisions under the Australian Competition and Consumer Law. The Elusive Platypus By Marian SAMPSON THE Mid North Coast region is certainly diverse when it comes to the nation’s fauna. It is not only home to koala and dingo populations but platypus are also able to be found in our inland creeks and streams. Platypus are hard to spot and are elusive. However, taking the time to sit quietly by a river bank and spotting a platypus is a rewarding experience. In Gloucester, not far from town, and the Barrington Tops you can sit and watch for platypus or you can even cool off in the same rivers that the platypus call home. A recent three year study by a team from the University of NSW has found that these unique monotremes are at risk with some large dams having a serious impact on downstream platypus populations. The researchers from UNSW Sydney’s Platypus Conservation Initiative in the Centre for Ecosystem Science (CES) say the natural flow regime needs to be replicated on dammed rivers if platypus populations are to recover in areas below large dams. “The way dams are managed, such as the timing and volume of the release of water,

q can significantly impact on platypuses living downstream,” lead author Dr Tahneal Hawke said. Their findings published in the international scientific journal Aquatic Conservation, are concerning as much of the distribution of platypus overlaps with highly regulated or dammed rivers. last year recommended the platypus be listed as a threatened species under Australia’s and NSW environmental legislation. That assessment found that river regulation was one of the major threats to platypus, along with historic land clearing and extreme droughts. For this study, the CES researchers surveyed platypuses in unregulated and regulated rivers on upstream and downstream sections of large dams across three regions of eastern Australia: the Upper Murray, Snowy, and Border River. “Protecting platypuses remains a real challenge because much of their habitats coincide with regulated rivers,” co-author and researcher Dr Gilad Bino said. “Reducing negative impacts through better water management will be vital in preserving this iconic species, which is experiencing multiple and interacting threats.” Professor Richard Kingsford, a co-author and Director of CES, said there is much to be learnt about the complex effects of dams and sustainable management of our rivers. “There are opportunities to use environmental flows to improve outcomes for rivers and platypuses by ensuring sufficient allocation of the water to the environment and releasing water at the right time of year,” he said. “We also need to make sure that baseflows, particularly during drought periods, are high enough to ensure permanent waterholes which serve as critical refuges for platypuses and other freshwater species.” As part of the Platypus Conservation Initiative, the researchers continue to investigate platypus populations, working with state and local governments to develop conservation strategies to protect the iconic species from further declines. Aussie Ark rescued and rehabilitated five platypus after the Black Summer Bushfires, which were released back into the wild near Gloucester.

“Apex predators’ effects can trickle all the way through ecosystems and even extend to plants and soils.” Prof. Letnic’s previous research has shown that suppressing dingo populations can lead to a growth in kangaroo numbers, which has repercussions for the rest of the ecosystem. But despite the valuable role they play in the ecosystem, dingoes are not being conserved across Australia – unlike many other native species. In his recent visit to the region when questioned about koalas and dingo populations in the region by NOTA the Prime Minister told News Of The Area, “As serious as issues around climate change and these things are, he (Sir David Attenborough) points out that, at the end of the day, what actually supports the planet is ensuring that we maintain and support biodiversity. “And there are a range of things you need to do to address biodiversity. “That's why we have the EPBC Act. “That's why the Department of Environment puts in place the initiatives and regulations that sit around, whether it's mining operations or many other types of activities, to support biodiversity. ”t’s a gradual process, which is moving at a pace which supports the livelihoods and the economy of regions like the Hunter but, at the same time, meets our overall objectives which are environmental, as well as economic and, in particular, supports biodiversity,” said Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Dingos are an important part of the biodiversity of the region as the apex predator. IT’S time to call a spade a spade and a Dingo a Dingo says Dr Kylie Cairns. There is strong evidence that almost all wild canines in Australia are genetically more than half dingo, a new study led by UNSW Sydney shows – suggesting that lethal measures to control ‘wild dog’ populations are primarily targeting dingoes. The study, released just days after MidCoast Council used lethal control on 5 dingoes at Hawks Nest, is hot on the heels of another study which cements the findings - that we are dealing with dingoes and not wild dogs. The study, published in Australian Mammalogy, collates the results from over 5000 DNA samples of wild canines across the country, making it the largest and most comprehensive dingo data set to date. The team found that 99 percent of wild canines tested were pure dingoes or dingodominant hybrids (that is, a hybrid canine with more than 50 per cent dingo genes). Of the remaining one per cent, roughly half were dog-dominant hybrids and the other half feral dogs. “We don’t have a feral dog problem in Australia,” said Dr Kylie Cairns, a conservation biologist from UNSW Science and lead author of the study. “They just aren’t established in the wild. “There are rare times when a dog might go bush, but it isn’t contributing significantly to the dingo population.” Pure dingoes – dingoes with no detectable dog ancestry – made up 64 per cent of the wild canines tested, while an additional 20 per cent were at least three-quarters dingo. The findings challenge the view that pure dingoes are virtually extinct in the wild – and call to question the widespread use of the term ‘wild dog’. “‘Wild dog’ isn’t a scientific term – it’s a euphemism,” says Dr Cairns. “Dingoes are a native Australian animal, and many people don't like the idea of using lethal control on native animals. “The term ‘wild dog’ is often used in government legislation when talking about lethal control of dingo populations.” The terminology used to refer to a species can influence our underlying attitudes about them, especially when it comes to native and culturally significant animals. This language can contribute to other misunderstandings about dingoes, like being able to judge a dingo’s ancestry by the colour of its coat be it sandy, black, white, brindle, tan patchy or black and tan. Mr Brad Nesbitt, an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of New England and a co-author on the study believes there is an urgent need to stop calling dingoes wild dogs. “Only then can we have an open public discussion about finding a balance between dingo control and dingo conservation in the Australian bush,” he said. Professor Mike Letnic, senior author of the study and professor of conservation biology, has been researching dingoes and their interaction with the ecosystem for 25 years. He says they play an important role in maintaining the biodiversity and health of the ecosystem. “As apex predators, dingoes play a fundamental role in shaping ecosystems by keeping the number of herbivores and smaller predators in check,” says Prof. Letnic.

other states.” Dr Cairns, who is also a scientific advisor to the Australian Dingo Foundation, says the timing of this paper is important. “There is a large amount of funding currently going towards aerial baiting inside national parks,” she said. “This funding is to aid bushfire recovery, but aerial wild dog baiting doesn’t target invasive animals or ‘wild dogs’ – it targets dingoes. “We need to have a discussion about whether killing a native animal – which has been shown to have benefits for the ecosystem – is the best way to go about ecosystem recovery.” Dingoes are known to negatively impact farming by preying on livestock, especially

sheep. The researchers say it’s important that these impacts are minimised, but how we manage these issues is deserving of wider consultation – including discussing non-lethal methods to protect livestock. “There needs to be a public consultation about how we balance dingo management and conservation,” said Dr Cairns. “The first step in having these clear and meaningful conversations is to start calling dingoes what they are. “The animals are dingoes or predominantly dingo, and there are virtually no feral dogs, so it makes no sense to use the term ‘wild dog’. “It’s time to call a spade a spade and a dingo a dingo.”

In light of recent floods in the New England and Lower Mid North Coast regions, Dr David Durrheim, Public Health Physician, Hunter New England Population Health Unit, has provided some important information about how the public can best protect themselves and keep safe during the clean-up.

All Day Dining Cafe BULAHDELAH Central School Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students have showcased impressive culinary skills while preparing lunch for staff as part of their ‘All Day Dining’ assessment task. The student’s menu consisted of Frittata with Corn Salsa, Chilli and Lime Taco Salad and a Rustic Steak Sandwich with Parmesan Fries. The students produced work of a quality standard that was applauded by staff around the school.

BULAHDELAH Mountain and Markwell are about to feature in an art exhibition showcasing the work of locally renowned artist Carol Archer. Carol Archer is an Australian artist and scholar who returned to rural N.S.W. in Australia in 2016 after living in Hong Kong and Macao for many years. In 2019, Archer's work was included in the 10th GreenWay Art Prize Finalists Exhibition and in 2018 she was a finalist in the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize. SO, what to do? How can locals and visitors alike take some positive action if confronted by dingoes while walking their dogs at Hawks Nest? Lucille Ellem, president and co-founder of the Bargo Dingo Sanctuary south of Sydney 52 years ago, has some wise advice.

Curtain closes on quietest fire season in a decade WEDNESDAY 31 March marked the official end to the quietest fire season in more than a decade, a stark contrast to the devastating 2019/20 season. NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Commissioner Rob Rogers said this bush fire season had been a welcome change in terms of fire activity, property damage and hours committed by volunteer firefighters. “Firefighters have responded to just over 5500 bush and grass fires burning 30,963 hectares across NSW, considerably less than the 11,400 fires and 5.5 million hectares lost last season,” Commissioner Rogers said. “There has been just 11 days of total fire bans compared to 60 days last season, marking the quietest bush fire season since 2010/11. Commissioner Rogers said that despite the low level of fire activity this season, RFS members had been kept busy over recent weeks assisting flood affected communities across the state. “Time and time again when called upon, our members have stepped up to help. “As communities up and down the coast were

inundated by flood waters, our firefighters were there to help, both on the ground and in the air. “I am humbled by their want to serve locally and the broader NSW community. “To see hundreds of our firefighters travelling across the state to help communities in need is testament to their dedication and commitment.” Commission Rogers said that despite the low instances of bush and grass fires across the season high grass fuel loads remained west of the divide. “Over the coming weeks and months crews will begin hazard reduction burning when weather opportunities are more favourable to reduce these fuel loads. “It is vital for people living near Bush Fire Prone Land to not become complacent and to ensure they take the time now to clear, prepare and maintain their properties.” While Fire Permits are not required outside the BFDP, property owners conducting private hazard reduction burns are usually required

to have a Hazard Reduction Certificate before lighting up. Hazard Reduction Certificates are free and can be obtained from NSW RFS Fire Control Centres. “While firefighting agencies will be looking to conduct as many hazard reduction activities as possible, I encourage landholders to do the same.” said Commissioner Rogers. For the local crew at the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade, hazard reduction is the focus for the coming months. “As a brigade we are working with Mid Coast Fire Control to conduct several Hazard Reductions in the area when the conditions allow, we also welcome the opportunity to advise and assist property owners in our area with their Hazard reduction planning. “We will have Brigade members manning an information Stand at our Charity Golf Day at Hawks Nest on Friday 16 April,” said Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade Captain David Bright.

Despite high levels of child car restraint use in Australia (92-99%) and one of the most stringent child restraint design standards in the world, approximately 40-70 children are killed on Australian roads each year, and thousands more are injured. Approved by the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Guidelines are based on the best scientific evidence on how to keep children safe when travelling in motor vehicles. NSW Minister for Transport and Roads, the Hon Andrew Constance MP, said drivers have a duty of care to ensure children are restrained correctly in their cars. “Please make sure your child is in the proper child restraint and it has been installed correctly, because you never know when it might save their life,” Minister Constance said. Project leader and Senior Principal Research Scientist at NeuRA, Professor Lynne Bilston, said the revised Guidelines optimise child passenger safety by factoring in new research and transport developments. “Our recommendations give consideration to newer

restraint types, how a child fits in a particular car when deciding if they can use an adult seatbelt, as well as newer modes of transport,” Professor Bilston said. “For instance, now that rideshares are common, it is recommended children use their own restraint in rideshare vehicles, not just in the family’s own car,” she said. “Unfortunately, a lot of inaccurate information gets circulated through social media. “The Guidelines help to dispel these myths and ensure members of the public receive accurate advice on keeping our children safe while travelling,” said Christine Erskine, Kidsafe NSW Executive Officer. The new recommendations outlined in the Guidelines include: using child restraints or booster seats when travelling in rideshares (e.g. Uber) and rental cars, as well as taxis; strengthened advice to use the ‘5 Step Test’ to decide when to transition from a booster seat to adult seat belt; encouraging children to sit in an upright seating posture so their restraint can work optimally; children aged 4-8 years should use an add-on booster seat in preference to an integrated booster, but children 9 years and older can safely use an integrated

booster seat if their car has a side curtain airbag where they are sitting; and parents of low birthweight babies should use an infant car restraint designed for low birthweight babies until they can get good harness fit in a ‘standard’ child car restraint. NOW that the flood waters are starting to subside, I have a new problem swarms of blood-sucking mosquitoes. What earthly purpose do they serve and what can I do to avoid the bites and potentially Ross River Fever?

TO ROOF OR NOT TO ROOF! I’ve discovered my roof is leaking. I am placing it on the market. What do I do? DURING this extremely wet weather event we are currently experiencing, it has brought to light the properties where the roof needs attention. I always advocate that when you are preparing to go to market you attend to all the little repairs and maintenance jobs that are outstanding. That way, when buyers walk through your home, they won’t be overwhelmed by things that need to be completed or repaired. Even if those items are only small insignificant jobs, they could be enough for an already nervous buyer to feel completely overwhelmed and walk out with no intention of buying. Now a new roof is a big ticket item. Like a kitchen or bathroom that needs replacing, a new roof can be a very costly affair. Sometimes though the roof doesn’t need replacing. Get a qualified tradie to inspect your roof if it is leaking. It may just be that some of the screws are loose, or that one sheet of iron needs replacing etc. Regardless, leaking roofs scare off buyers. If they still do want to purchase, after finding out that the roof leaks, then you may find that they want you to reduce the price of the property considerably. So if you have a roof that is leaking, have it inspected, then repaired or replaced. This will ultimately lead to a much faster sale, more thank likely a higher sales price achieved and a happy buyer. I hope this helps Denise

Tuesday 23 March: All games "washed out" resulting in a situation where some teams now have 2 Byes. Excelling at Cricket IN mid-March, Isaac Redman and Charlie Matheson represented Bulahdelah Central School at the Hunter Regional Cricket trials. The young cricketers qualified for the event following selection at the Zone trials held earlier this term. With strong competition for a place on the combined schools team, Charlie was one of 24 students from Newcastle and the surrounding Hunter Valley who progressed to the second round of the regional trails. Charlie trialled for the positions of batsman and wicket keeper, vying for a position on the team of 11. “Although Charlie was unsuccessful in gaining a team position, the selectors on the day complimented Charlie on his wicket keeping, he didn’t drop a catch, and kept great positioning when keeping against fast and spin bowling and batted with precision,” said Bulahdelah Central School’s Deputy Principal Learning and Support, Debbie Booth. “Congratulations Charlie and Isaac on representing our school, we are very proud of you,” Debbie said.

Dear Tina, IT is quite hard to love the humble mosquito, particularly at 2am in the morning when a lone mosquito buzzes in your ear, but you are too tired to do anything but slap your face and swear. Apparently, they are the deadliest insect on earth, which is quite an achievement, able to wipe out their two-legged foes with everything from malaria to dengue fever as well as knock you for six with Ross River Fever. On top of that they can give your poor little pooch heart worm which is a devastating disease. And you are right, they are currently swarming around in huge numbers and breeding up in stagnant pools of water. I've swapped my Issey Miyake fragrance for eau de DEET lately in an effort to repel the blood-sucking blighters away.

Grade 4 Yellow have been bowling with some mixed results but are still in with a chance in their section. They have 2 games left to play at home 6 April against New Lambton and away on 8 April v Lemon Tree Passage. Grade 4 Blue bowl again on the 8 April at Adamstown at this stage they still have a "make up" game to complete against Adamstown at home, no date for this match has yet been decided. At present Grade 4 Blue are winning their section but at the time of writing NDWBA has not posted any further Pennant results since 30 March, hence this situation could have altered.

Despite all of this, they do have some benefits -- the larvae are important in the food chain, providing meals for fish, birds and spiders. It is also only the females that feed off your blood and they do this to get the right nutrients for their babies, which is kind of sweet for Twilight fans. So, on balance, there is an earthly purpose to mosquitoes, but that doesn't make any of us feel much better when we are covered in red, itchy welts. No Change In Coastal Drownings By Marian SAMPSON THE University of UNSW has conducted the first indepth review specific to coastal drownings. “We found that evaluation of coastal drowning prevention strategies is rare,” said William Koon, the lead author of the study and a PhD candidate in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences. “This means we simply don’t have enough data showing what works and what doesn’t work.” Mr Koon said the review’s findings are concerning as tens of thousands of Australian

primary and secondary school students participate in beach or water safety programs from lifeguards and lifesavers every year. “We need to assess if programs function as intended, and continually refine them to improve effectiveness.” There is evidence that over the last 16 years we haven't really seen any improvement in the number of coastal drownings each year in Australia, despite lots of ongoing school and public education programs. The study found that existing drowning prevention strategies are largely un-evaluated. There were 125 coastal

drowning deaths in Australia last year. All this in a week where a body was found on a Myall Coast beach. Many studies recommended prevention measures, most frequently related to education, lifeguards and signage. “Is that enough? Are these efforts working? How well? We don’t have enough data to answer these questions,” Mr Koon said. He believes it is important to continue to refine school water safety programs. “There are probably different lessons to be learned, such as messaging at different ages, whether that’s stopping to look for rips or putting on sunscreen, avoiding alcohol or avoiding jumping off

prevention and water safety research. With 26 pristine beaches in Port Stephens we have our fair share of beach rescues and sadly drownings, rivers are also high risk for drownings. Councillor Glen Dunkley who is also a volunteer Surf Life Saver told News Of The Area, “This is interesting research, I’m convinced that some education work, in school programs and things like nippers and surfgroms.

“These programs give kids a core understanding of risks at the beach. “They need to be fun and not seem like education so the kids are engaged. “It’s different to when I grew up and there is a smarter approach through the fun engagement way of doing things. “However no matter what; I'm a very strong advocate of education for people around the water,” he said.

FOR some, croquet tends to conjure a magical world of the Queen Of Hearts and fanciful flamingos being used as croquet mallets. Perhaps if Lewis Carroll had penned the literary classic in Tea Gardens it would be pelicans rather than flamingos. But rather than a fantasy world with somewhat kooky characters, croquet is a very real fun and challenging game, and not for the reasons that challenged the Queen Of Hearts or young Alice. It is a game of strategy, skill and it can be great fun! The Myall Park Croquet Club is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the games played at the Myall Park Sports Facilities at Yamba Street Hawks Nest with an Open Day. Antony Jones of the Myall

Park Croquet Club told News Of The Area, “The celebrations will be held on Saturday 10 April and are starting at 10am with morning tea and a lunchtime BBQ sausage sizzle for members, guests, and the local community (subject to current Covid-19 restrictions and the weather). “This is a great opportunity to come and try croquet in a fun setting,” he said. The club plays every Monday Wednesday and Saturday at 9am. New players are welcome to try this sport which provides good exercise for the mind and body and there is no need to wrestle with a flamingo or a pelican to give this game a go.
