The journey to his success in Queensland has been a long one. With gyms closed in NSW due to COVID, Josh had to make do with

However, Josh maintained his commitment and earned his spot in the team. “We had a setup with the iPad and we would do Zoom training. “Outside, I had the Pommel and lots of room to train there but when we got back in the gym, we had to work so much harder to get back on track,” Josh said. To earn a place on the NSW team, he

had to undertake two state qualifiers and a state championship, where he was first place on five of six apparatuses, coming second in the state. Josh has worked extremely hard for six years to get to this point, and even trains in Sydney, but has always been a very strong and flexible person. “When he was about three and half he had socks on and we had wooden floors. “I was cooking away in the kitchen and I heard him yell ‘Mum look at me’ and there he was, in full splits and at that

MIDCOAST Council has undertaken a review of growth areas and redevelopment opportunities in the MidCoast region, and is seeking feedback on a draft Settlement Expansion and Redevelopment Opportunities Analysis Report review document until Thursday 1 July, 2021. “The MidCoast region is currently experiencing significant growth in all urban areas and the draft review has been undertaken to ensure Council is prepared and ready to act to support potential new housing and business opportunities in the MidCoast,” explained Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell. The draft document consolidates previous strategies and regional plans to identify a logical, short-medium term view of expansion of the MidCoast region’s urban settlements and give the community certainty about what areas can potentially be rezoned and the timeframes for this to occur. The document identifies a range of areas around the MidCoast where future

expansion may happen, with the draft review document specifying a timeline for the expansion of these areas into short (one to five years), medium ( six-10 years) or long term (10+ years) priorities based on the rate of expected growth. “There will be no immediate effect on landowners or the community. “The review document provides a guide for Council, developers, landowners and the community to follow for the future expansion of growth areas in the MidCoast region, which will provide additional land supply to meet the significant demand that we are currently experiencing in our region,” Mr De Szell said. “The draft document only impacts a small percentage of landowners in the MidCoast. “Throughout this process we have reviewed 47 previously identified urban growth areas across the region,” he explained. “The review recommended that 37 of these areas be retained, with an additional three growth area opportunities identified.”

moment we knew we had to get him into some sort of kindy gym and it just grew from there,” Josh’s mum Jade Teelow said. “For about twelve months I think he forgot he had feet because he was walking around the house and everywhere on his hands,” she joked. With dreams of representing Australia in the Olympics or Commonwealth Games, Josh gave some advice, “If it’s hard just push through it, anything that is hard you’ve just got to imagine what it’s going to be like when you can do it and how easy it will get.” Congratulations on an amazing success.

FOR almost two decades residents in Pindimar have been fighting against a proposed Abalone farm in Pindimar, and now more than ever they are speaking up as the development is currently in its recommendation phase. Austasia Leefield Pty Ltd proposes the construction of a land based abalone aquaculture farm with the capacity to produce up to 60 tonnes for annum of Blacklip Abalone at 180 Clarke Street in Pindimar. This will include pipelines to source saltwater from the estuary of Port Stephens adjacent to the Port Stephens – Great Lakes Protected waters and the Tallowfield Wildlife Refuge. Verity Grinnell and Lesley Lane are members of the Pindimar Bundabah Community Association Aquaculture subcommittee who are fighting against the development, worried

about what they believe could be disastrous consequences for not only Pindimar, but the entire region. “Don’t mine our Port Stephens Estuaries for clean water to grow Abalone and feed lots whilst returning approximately two tonnes of nitrogen per year (cumulatively) back to the Port,” they said. Many of the key issues addressed included nutrients such as nitrogen and ammonia longterm impacts on aquatic ecosystems, especially seagrass, long lasting effects for the flora and fauna including marine life, koalas, Glossy Black Cockatoos, the threatened Little Bentwing bat and East Coast Freetail bat amongst others.

Other concerns were raised about the 24 hour noise and increase of traffic volume.

In public submissions, the project received an overwhelmingly large wave of objections with 212 of the 216 submissions opposing the development.

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment recently assessed the situation.

“The Department considers there is an unacceptable risk to the marine ecology and the Applicant has not undertaken an adequate assessment of the likely environmental impacts on the Port Stephens marine environment. “The proposal is also inconsistent with the principles of ecologically sustainable development (ESD) and Council’s strategic water quality objectives for the MidCoast local government area and

Promoting Cancer Screenings to improve early detection rates THE Australian Government is increasing its efforts to promote cancer screenings to support and improve outcomes for all Australians, including $9.7 million for a new National Bowel Cancer Screening Program awareness campaign. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the campaign will aim to increase the numbers of Australians taking their free bowel cancer test and will focus on men aged 50 to 59 years, people living in regional and remote Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and individuals from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities. “Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia and is more common in people over the age of 50. “Each year, more than 15,000 cases are diagnosed, and more than 5,000 lives are lost to bowel cancer. “When detected early, however, the great majority(around 90%) of bowel cancers can be successfully treated,” Dr Gillespie said. Bowel cancer is one of the types of cancer targeted by Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, Cancer Council Australia’s flagship event, which was hit hard by Covid-19 restrictions in 2020. Minister for Health and Aged Care Greg Hunt said the Government is increasing its efforts on cancer screening to help more Australians to get early treatment and beat the disease. “Cancer Council Australia does fantastic work raising funds for research, funding prevention initiatives, communicating about cancer prevention and screening, and most importantly, providing support to people diagnosed with cancer.” As part of the 2021-22 Budget a number of measures were announced to support national

cancer screening programs, including: ● more than $100 million to improve early detection of breast and cervical cancer, which includes $67 million to continue the expansion of BreastScreen Australia’s mammogram services to women aged 70 to74 years. ● $6.9 million in 2021-22 to establish the feasibility of a new national lung cancer program, and to trial new cancer care nurses for lung cancer patients; and ● $32.8 million with the aim of

Super Moon By Marian SAMPSON THIS week residents across NSW watched a spectacular Super Flower Blood Moon which is also a lunar eclipse appear in our skies Dr Ben Montet is a Scientia Lecturer at UNSW Science’s School of Physics, where he leads the Nearby Worlds and Their Stars (NEWTS) Lab, spoke to News Of The Area. “There are two things: the first is the super moon and the moon is closer to the earth. This event will make the moon look bigger than it normally does – this is something that happens once a year or so. “The Super Flower Blood Moon and Lunar Eclipse earth between sun and moon occurs when the earth is between sun and moon, this

Historian Delves into Colonial Times

DAVID BENSON, the former principal of Bulahdelah Central School, has used primary source material to get as close as possible to an accurate portrayal of colonial life around the Karuah River and the northern settlement of Port Stephens. The history of the Australian Agricultural Company is well documented but in his new book 'A year on Cooplacurripa', David dug deeper and brought to light a little known part of their enterprise which led to the sacking of its chief agent. He even tracked down remnants of their farm, bridges and the access roads to their No.1 farm as it was known. His glossy 35 page book, liberally illustrated with colour plates, tells the story. On top of this David’s 'The Present State of Karuah Port Stephens' sources material from Robert Dawson, who wrote of European interaction with the Indigenous people of that time. Yet another publication of Benson's is 'The Historians' Guide To the North Shore of Port Stephens'. This highlights some of the more remarkable but lesser known historical events and individuals of those times long gone. Straying from the history trail, David has also put into print his very amusing personal experience as a green young teacher sent to an isolated one teacher school in the 1960s. He is indeed a talented writer and his 'A Year on Cooplacurripa' is a page turner to lift anybody's spirits. His skills were no doubt honed as a long time English / history high school teacher and subject master. David took out the Port Stephens Literature Award some years back with his short story: 'An Old Man on Port Stephens'. There are various superstitions around blood moons and many different cultures have stories to explain the phenomena. Nature never takes a break TEN Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens Bitou Buster volunteers were confronted with unexpectedly huge weeds at their latest session clearing the dunes of Hawks Nest. They found the site, at the end of Sanderling

The volunteers spent their time cutting off the flowers and berries before the flowers could seed and be spread by birds into native bushland. All the flowers and seed heads were collected in bags and then deposited in the red garbage bins for safe disposal. Bitou Busters organiser Jill Madden said recent wet

Council’s sponsorship policy updated MIDCOAST Council has refreshed its Event and Festival Sponsorship Policy, cementing its commitment to attracting and supporting events and festivals that capitalise on the strengths of the region. The traditional sponsorship program went through a review process and Council’s new version includes updated categories which will make it easier for organisers to identify and apply for the most suitable type of

sponsorship. The main changes to the policy are the reduction in the number of sponsorship categories, updated sponsorship category titles, new assessment criteria for each category and the decision to have the majority of sponsorship assessments completed via a single round, rather than the two rounds previously run. The three new categories are Community and Local Events (funding up to $2,500); Events and Festivals

(funding up to $10,000); and Regionally Significant Events. The Community and Local Events category recognises events that are primarily staged for local audiences, while the Events and Festivals category is for higher profile events that attract visitors from outside the MidCoast region, and the Regionally Significant category is for events that showcase the MidCoast on a much larger scale and would be difficult to replicate

‘THE Enchanted Forest’ was the theme for this year's Bulahdelah Central School Book Fair. And it seems that the BCS community was ‘enchanted’ with the event, purchasing $5182 worth of books throughout the Fair. “The Library staff would like to thank the Bulahdelah School community for its generous support of our 2021 Book Fair,” said Librarian Jody Mostyn. “It was fantastic to see so many students, parents, grandparents, staff and community members take time out of their day to purchase a book. “It was a delight to see our students eager to buy books and be excited about reading. “If we can foster a love of reading in our children and students, we will be giving

them skills they can use for life. “One of our favourite things about Book Fair is seeing excited faces wanting to tell us about the chapter they have just finished and the adventures they have

been on while reading their books,” she said. Of the $5182 worth of books sold, the school will receive $1036 for hosting the book fair, will be used to purchase resources for students.

PORT Stephens has a colourful history particularly when it comes to WWII. Generally Australia was kept safe during WWII, partly through the efforts of the Diggers and the native people who supported them on the Kokoda Trail and of course by the Allied Forces that fought the war in the pacific. But we were on high alert and Australia was under attack. The Japanese attacked Sydney Harbour, Darwin and Newcastle, with other attacks on towns in Northern Australia and attacks on shipping in the region. Tomaree Headland was fortified and you can still see the remnant gun emplacements and torpedo tubes which were in place to protect the east coast of Australia against invasion by the Japanese. At just the other end of Stockton Beach which was

fortified for the duration, Fort Scratchley fired on the enemy in the early hours of 8 June in 1942. A Japanese submarine

I-21 which was under the command of Captain Kanji Matsumura, shelled Newcastle after it travelled across Stockton Bight and

positioned itself about 9 kms north east of Newcastle. 34 shells were fired at Newcastle in the engagement.

$17 million available in Crown Reserves grants CROWN land managers and community groups that use Crown land in the Hunter are invited to apply for a share of $17 million in grants to upgrade and maintain community facilities and reserves across NSW. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said applications for the NSW Government’s Crown Reserves Improvement Fund are open until 25 June 2021. “The Crown Reserves Improvement Fund

maintains and upgrades reserves and community facilities on Crown land for community use,” Mr Martin said. “This year the NSW Government will invest $17 million across the state to benefit community, recreational and tourism facilities on Crown land reserves. “Grant applications are open to Crown land reserve managers and users including local councils, community groups, showgrounds and

caravan parks, so I strongly encourage eligible local organisations to apply. “The fund will support improvements to community facilities while supporting local jobs, businesses and the region’s economy through upgrade work. “It will also fund bushfire management and weed and pest control on reserves.” Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said grants will support projects that can deliver social,

environmental, cultural and economic benefits. “Crown reserves play a critical role by protecting the environment and providing green open spaces for parks, ovals, walking, cycling and sports and recreation activities to keep communities healthy and happy,” Mrs Pavey said. “They also provide affordable and secure land for a wide range of community-focused organisations including surf life-saving clubs, scouts and girl guide groups, the RSPCA,

Make no mistake, the war was on the doorstep of Port Stephens and the area was defended by the servicemen stationed at Fort Tomaree and those of the HMAS Assault, a naval training ground in Port Stephens that prepared soldiers for war. On 24 May 1943 one of the Catalinas stationed at Rathmines, Lake Macquarie crashed off Jimmys Beach at Port Stephens. Sadly, seven of nine crew members under the command of Flight Lieutenant Brian Higgins lost their lives. This week the anniversary of the crash was commemorated at the Inner Light of Port Stephens hosted by Marine Rescue and organised by the Tomaree Museum Association. A nephew of the late commander of the plane Flight Lieutenant Higgins also by the name of Brian Higgins attended the service. Special guests were RAAF Williamtown Commander Group Captain Anthony Stanton and the Mayor of Port Stephens, Ryan Palmer.

Winter Warmer Exhibition THE biggest art exhibition by our local Galleries in the Gardens (GIG) art group is the annual Winter Warmer, so named in the hope it brings a ray of sunshine

The Karuah Rooettes took on the Abermain Hawks in a game which would put one of the two teams to the top of the ladder. The Rooettes Bec Roe was first to score with Ebony Oakley converting to take the score to 6-0. Kayla Campbell then scored to take the score to 10-0 at halftime. Captain Tamara Lilley was first to score in the second half with Ebony Oakley converting for 16-0. Then Jacqui Gornall scored to make it 200, Ebony Oakley scored next to take it to 24-0, before Macey Elvidge scored to take the final score to 28-0. The win takes the Rooettes on the top of the ladder. Next Saturday the Rooettes take on Abermain again at Howe Park Abermain, kick off 3pm. The Karuah Roos then went up against the Tea Gardens Hawks. The Roos Captain Mitch O'Bryan scored two tries, with Aiden Bills converting one to take the score to 10-0. Then Aiden Bills scored and converted his own try for 16-0. SUPERMARKETS are such fraught places. People see us at our most unkempt when we realise at 9pm that there's no bread for lunches, our most angry, when someone rams into our heels with their overloaded trolley, and our most impatient, when the woman being served says, 'Oh, that tomato was on sale and you've charged me the full price', which leads to a loudspeaker call for a price check and then confirmation that the customer had it wrong and her decision to not worry about the tomato after all, which segues into a refunding process, by which stage you've missed the first 15 minutes of your favourite television program for the week and eaten the Snickers bar you bought to improve the viewing experience. Checking out the groceries of the person in front is a pretty innocent past-time, but commenting is next-level intrusion. I've often wondered about the lives of people in front of me when they purchase 16 tins of cat food, a Tiramisu and some Deep Heat cream. A crazy cat woman who has so many cats that curl around her body at night while she's eating dessert that she has sustained a shoulder injury? Who knows. Now, I suspect if you'd had a packet of pasta, two tins of tomatoes, some garlic bread and a jar of Bolognese sauce in your trolley, that the man behind you could have been on the money, and was probably just engaging in some friendly pass-thedreary-queue-time banter. If, however, you'd had a trolley with Four Seasons Glow-in-the Dark lubricant, mouth gargle, Natropathica Horny Goatweed For Him, and some Double-strength Fish Oil tablets, how would the conversation have gone? 'Enjoying date night tonight, are we? I'd go easy on the Fish Oil if I were you. That stuff can cause some quite unpleasant reflux.' More irritating, though, is the man's use of the first-person plural pronoun 'we'. It seems to insinuate his involvement, somehow, in your evening meal, and, by extension, the potential for his involvement in the more intimate example offered to show just how inappropriate it is to chat to someone about their trolley contents. Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club ON Tuesday 25 May: Versatility Day was held, this is an annual event prize money kindly donated by our Major Sponsor First National Real Estate Hawks Nest. This year eight teams of Fours participated (randomly selected). One team member plays a Singles game while the remaining team members play Triples, then they divide to play 2 games of Pairs then finally a game of Fours. Prizes awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. The winners were Bev Dunn, Jean Glover, Bette Saillard and Maynie Roberts, scoring 75 points. Second place, with 73 points were Wilma Drake, Lyn Nightingale, Dawn Jones and Dot Dallas.

Irene Roberts, Judi Polak, Helen O’Haere came third with 60 points. Tea Gardens enjoyed a good win over hosts, Soldiers Point, in their first round winning all rinks and the master board 76-46. They were full of confidence going into the afternoon match against New Lambton and played the match in horrible conditions. They needed to win this match to book a berth in the finals but fell agonisingly short, going down by just two shots 57-59. The loss saw them having to win against Charlestown on Sunday and they were dependent on Soldiers Point beating New Lambton. Sunday came and although the wind had quietened down the squally rain continued.

Stroud and District Tennis Club By Peta SMITH

ON Tuesday 25 May Stroud and District Tennis Club saw the completion of our first mixed competition since the courts were destroyed in the 2015 floods. The competition was well supported with five teams playing and the new synthetic grass courts were fantastic. Barry, Dwayne and Phillip came out on top with a straight sets win over Greg, Leigh and Dustin.

The match against Charlestown was a tough one with scores very close for most of the match. Charlestown had the better of the closing ends however and ran out winners 56-45. The irony of it all was that Soldiers Point caused an upset and defeated New Lambton. So close, so close. The Tea Gardens side was strongly supported by a hardy band of loyal supporters. I know that their loud cheers and affection for our side did much to lift morale during the campaign. Well done the Fours. In other news. Last Wednesday, saw 50 bowlers on the greens for the usual Nominated Triples competition. There were 14 teams of 3 and 4 pairs teams. The winners were Vic Garlick, Graham Reynolds

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Dennis Ashbridge. Our thanks to the Garden Eatery for their support. On Thursday, super coach Peter Thornton, conducted a coaching session that was open to all bowlers, both male and female. The session was very well supported, and Peter will continue to hold these each week at 1.00 pm, depending on demand. It is hoped that the success of the Grade 4 side this year will inspire all bowlers to improve their skills and knowledge of the game so that we can be a Pennant force next year. The next Championship competition at our club is the “blue ribbon” Major Singles. A nomination sheet will be posted shortly.

FOURTEEN swimmers from Myall Masters formed a strong team to compete in the 2021 resurrection series swim meet held at Woy Woy last Saturday 22 May. The carnival was a success with the Myall Masters achieving an overall fifth position out of the nineteen teams competing in the series which aims to ramp up swimming for all ages in 2021. Team Captain, Hawks Nest local Steve Rees, stated, “The team swam well with some events being a first for a number of our swimmers. “The results included twenty-five personal best times for several of the
