A year on the air IT is now over 12 months since Myall Coast Radio had their very first broadcast in October 2020. The local station now features thirteen presenters, with a further nine waiting to be trained. The station broadcasts two services for the community; Myall Coast Radio 87.80Mhz, broadcasting on home and car radios; and Myall Coast Radio Streaming, which has a full broadcast community radio program format and caters for a broader listener base. Continuing to care for water and country LAST week was National Water Week, an annual initiative that seeks to raise awareness among all Australians about the value of water. Running from 18-24 October, this year’s theme was ‘Caring for water and Country’, which aims to deepen our understanding of Australian First Nations people’s knowledge in protecting and sustaining our water and lands for over 65,000 years. MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said it was a great opportunity to reflect on the stewardship the Biripi and Worimi people had demonstrated towards the region’s natural water sources. “These rivers and aquifers were vitally important to the traditional custodians of this land and they continue to sustain us today,” said Mr Scott. “It’s a strong reminder to us all that if we look after our waterways and use water sustainably, nature will continue to provide for us.” While the pandemic forced Council to cancel its traditional Whizzy visits, there were still a number of initiatives planned for Water Week.

Saturday’s protest is the latest in a string of lobbying efforts from local Councillors, local Ministers, and thousands of residents, all desperate to have these pools open to the public this summer. These unstaffed public pools have been closed for almost two years. Many frustrated residents say lobbying for all the pools to be opened have been blocked online by council staff. MidCoast Council’s General Manager, Adrian Panuccio, in a recent private email to a State Member of the Legislative Council, blamed the NSW Health COVID-19 Orders, stating, “The MidCoast Council is unable to meet the criteria at these pools”, adding that, “a lack of staff resources and the ability to service the additional costs

Stroud and Hawks Nest resident Carolyn Dufton stated, “There is no evidence that the MidCoast Council’s General Manager and his senior staff have done any planning over the last 18 months to safely reopen all our public pools to the public.

THE NSW Government has announced their economic roadmap with mental health as a top priority. Investing a record $130 million, the Government plans to provide access to support for those who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding boost will provide more appointments for psychology and psychiatry services, address the sharp rise in eating disorders and self-harm presentations, free up more mental health beds and launch the biggest suicide prevention training program ever undertaken. Minister for Mental Health Bronnie Taylor said the new funding will provide public access to private psychiatrists, psychologists and mental health beds as well as training 275,000 people in the community to become mental health first aiders. “We want NSW to be a whole state of mental health champions, which is why we’re launching a state-wide community training blitz to make sure help is always close at hand, from the schoolyard to the sports club and

beyond,” Mrs Taylor said. This announcement will help locals in the area access private psychologists and psychiatrists and will support youth through an additional 55,000 services in local headspace centres including Cessnock, Maitland and Newcastle. Alongside this, eighteen FTE Aboriginal Care Navigators and eighteen FTE Aboriginal Peer Workers will be employed to support Aboriginal Australians access appropriate mental health and suicide prevention services. Five million dollars will be directed to funding a local grants program for community wellbeing events that support the greater community access to mental health and wellbeing activities. “This is all about fast-tracking access to boosted services to support people doing it tough right now as well as preventing the emergence of mental health issues in the future. “Our focus over the next two years will be on supporting our young people and families, building system capacity to meet demand and supporting our communities to lead the recovery,” Mrs Taylor said.

The winding back of lockdown restrictions was not the only highlight in the week commencing 11 October 2021. 2 new Judges were appointed to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia’s (FCFCOA) in the Newcastle Registry. They are Ms Vivien Carty and Ms Julie Kearney. It was a feel good moment at Mullane & Lindsay as Ms Carty is a former member of our specialist Family Law team. In 2011 she left our firm to commence a new career as a barrister. We celebrate her appointment and know she will bring great energy and humanity in her new role as a Judge in the FCFCOA in Newcastle. Likewise, Ms Kearney who is a former Registrar of the Family Court, barrister and mediator. regions. They bring the number of Judges in our Registry to a total of 5. In addition to the appointments, the following changes have been implemented to provide further resources at the Newcastle Registry: an additional courtroom and chambers; a new case management system; and the electronic hearings which became a necessity during the COVID 19 period are being continued so as to increase access to justice for regional areas and to ensure the safety of vulnerable litigants. We are hopeful that these measures will alleviate some of the pressures on the family court system and benefit those families experiencing relationship breakdown. “The Council has doubled down on no pools despite our efforts. “For Stroud and other nearby communities, that means no swimming for our children and young people, no lessons, and no exercise for adults. “MidCoast Council is the only Local Government Area in NSW where this is happening.” MidCoast Council has maintained it is the fault of Premier Perrottet and NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard that unstaffed public pools have ‘slipped between the

cracks’ of the current COVID Health Orders. In most of these small regional communities, the local pools were built by residents and are a hub for healthy community activities, essential to recovery from COVID lockdown. Community groups have escalated the matter to elected state and federal government representatives as well as oversight agencies. The signs have reportedly been torn down by the MidCoast Council, and have been considered vandalism.

BULAHDELAH residents are banding together to form the Bulahdelah Showground Reserve User Group. It is envisaged that the group will represent the wider interests of all users of the Showground and create a cohesive vision for the site. It is envisaged that the group would represent organisations including The Bulahdelah Show Society Inc, Bulahdelah Tennis Club, Bulahdelah Bullets Football (Soccer) Club, Bulahdelah Pony Club and any other users of the facility such as Karate. This group would develop a vision and focus for future infrastructure and allow for accessing future grant funding, while liaising with Council on facilities maintenance, upgrades and usage. Since the delivery of the Community Building Partnership storage shed the site has been left with what many consider is a large and unsightly void in the wake of the construction. While the ability to store and safeguard showground equipment has been welcomed the need for a common vision for the site has been recognised. This teamed with the removal of the skate park from the Showground has left an opportunity to further develop the space for the community.

q One area that the Bulahdelah Tennis Club would like to see upgraded as a family friendly space at the Showgrounds. Spearheaded by the Bulahdelah Tennis Club Committee there is an opportunity to make plans for the beautification and usable development of this space for the community. Aaron Kinnane, Secretary of the Bulahdelah Tennis Club Committee, said, “We believe the existing exposed slab remaining from the demolished skate park could be utilised as a family friendly space for both families and children to use within close, safe, visual proximity to both the tennis courts and swimming pool. “We know as a committee, due to comments and feedback from our members, that many more of our members would participate in social tennis if there was such a space for their children to play safely in.” The members of the club believe that a unified approach from all reserve user groups could see this idea come to fruition and that a relatively small and achievable project like this would act as a beacon of positive and progressive thought toward and providing for our community members. Rhys Dawes is the current Football (soccer) Club President in Bulahdelah. He has commended the actions of the Tennis Club in getting the committee together. The football and cricket club have recently applied for grant funding for lighting at the site and to significantly improve the drainage at the grounds. He believes that this will open

Bulahdelah up to boundless opportunities in the future (the area missed out on hosting a massive event earlier in the year due to the wet grounds). Collaboration has been key for the sporting clubs with the football club using the tennis club's artificial surface (all weather) to be able to use for training in times of significant rainfall events. There is also keen interest from the community to formulate a plan to re-open the pool to the public. Bulahdelah has a growing number of young families in the community with a diverse range of interests as well as those traditionally catered for at the Showground. Bulahdelah’s Showground has recently fully refurbished amenities with two new accessible bathrooms, including shower, toilet and hand washing facilities, and a privacy wall at each entrance point. The change rooms have also been completely updated, with new shower and toilet fixtures and new change room seating made from recycled materials. The exterior of the building has been modernised with a rendered finish around the entire building and the roof updated to a skillion roof. “We have also added footpaths to the perimeter of the building and a concrete apron at the entrance for easier access especially during wet weather,” said MidCoast Council’s Dan Aldridge. The amenities upgrade was funded by a Crown Reserves Improvement Fund Program of $150,000 and a Council contribution of $135,000.

NSW Crime Stoppers: 'Just Hang Up' ALMOST 90% of Australians have received at least one nuisance or unwanted call every week and a further 10% receiving more than ten nuisance or unwanted calls each week, according to a recent consumer survey undertaken by Crime Stoppers (NSW). Scam activity has a significant social and economic impact on Australians. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Scamwatch, reports phone calls continue to be the most common way scammers reach consumers with financial losses of $66.8 million reported to Scamwatch between 1 January to 3 October 2021 from 120,279 reports. This represents a 104% increase in losses and an 87% increase in reports. Scammers are finding new ways to trick people into taking their calls. For example, Caller ID spoofing is one such tactic which allows the scammer to disguise their identity. If the scammer is calling from outside Australia, they can actually display an Australian phone

number, including a mobile number, which increases the likelihood of you answering their call. The impact on people’s productivity is enormous. It’s a nuisance and extremely disruptive. Some people are even receiving calls from their own phone number, while other people’s valid phone numbers are being reported as a phone scam because it has been used by criminals. If your phone number has been stolen and used in a phone scam, contact your telco provider immediately. There is no one single solution to avoid scams and blocking individual phone numbers is one solution but it only stops calls from that specific number. NSW Crime Stoppers has launched a new campaign to help the community minimise the risk of falling victim to phone scams. CEO, NSW Crime Stoppers, Mr Peter Price AM said, “A legitimate institution will not ask probing or personal questions on an

provide fresh opportunities and support NSW to return to a way of life we know and love,” Mr Kean said. “But we don’t just want to recover what we lost, we want to bounce back better than ever – and this package lays the foundations to do exactly that.” The NSW Government’s Economic Recovery Strategy includes $500 million to restore consumer and business confidence, including the expansion of Dine & Discover and Stay & Rediscover accommodation vouchers; these are aimed at boosting regional visitation and injecting cash into regions like Port Stephens. ATTEMPTING to lead NSW out of a COVIDaffected economy, the state’s new Premier is splashing the cash for families. Families, individuals and businesses across NSW will benefit from a targeted $2.8 billion package developed to accelerate recovery following the three month lockdown due to the Delta COVID-19 outbreak. The NSW Government’s Economic Recovery Strategy released last week includes funding to stimulate economic activity in cities and regions with a strong focus on rebuilding and supporting businesses, helping the hip pocket and boosting jobs. Premier Dominic Perrottet and Treasurer Matt Kean revealed that as part of the package, households of school-aged children in 2021 will receive $250 in vouchers to stimulate spending and economic activity. “One of the biggest challenges for so many families during lockdowns was learning from home, and now as life returns to normal we want to encourage people to get out and boost economic activity,” Mr Perrottet said. “In many senses this is a ‘Thank You’ that will go some small way towards helping family finances that took a big hit and at the same time supporting businesses and jobs.” The $250 in vouchers will be available through Service NSW in early 2022. For farmers, being involved in the dairy business means that the farm works every day of the year and it is important that farmers and the industry take advantage of growth opportunities. The NSW Government has released the NSW Dairy Industry Action Plan, which sets the foundations for the future growth of the industry. While many of us think of dairy as fresh milk for a Milo or a Latte there is also

a burgeoning industry in supplying powdered milk for formula across the globe. The Action Plan has been developed by the NSW Fresh Milk and Dairy Advocate Ian Zandstra, who was appointed in September 2019 and has been supported by industry representatives. Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said the plan would now be handed to industry to lead the implementation with the support of NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI). “Ian has done an outstanding job as the Fresh Milk & Dairy Advocate, delivering a clear path forward that has received broad industry support. “This plan will ensure

the state’s dairy industry remains resilient and profitable for many years to come,” Mr Marshall said. “The plan makes 28 recommendations, including the need to establish a Dairy Industry Action Plan Implementation Panel, to execute the Action Plan and report on its progress.” Mr Zandstra said he was pleased to see the final report released after extensive consultation with industry and government. “The NSW dairy industry is naturally innovative and resilient, so it was encouraging to deliver a report that has a clear, practical way forward that will support the growth of the sector,” Mr Zandstra said. “There is strong consensus within industry on what changes are needed to ensure we remain

The dwarf Parramatta red gums (Eucalyptus parramattensis, subspecies decadens) are given each year by MidCoast Council for the annual Myall River Festival tree give-away. But due to COVID restrictions, this year’s festival has been cancelled, so the group will give the trees for free directly to local residents, to be planted as soon as possible this spring. Volunteers will be giving away koala food tube stock trees and other native shrubs

donated by MidCoast Council together with a sheet of instructions on tree planting and their care. They will be available on Saturday 6 November at Woody’s Building & Garden Centre, Tea Gardens, from 9am to 2pm. The Tea Gardens Public School P&C Committee will also be having a BBQ fundraiser. There will be another opportunity to pick up free trees the following weekend from Hunter Valley Providores in Wanya Road on Tea Gardens Industrial Estate, from 8am to 12 midday on Saturday 13 November. Hendra Virus confirmed in flying foxes in broad region of Australia

SCIENTISTS at CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, have uncovered a new type of Hendra virus in flying foxes, confirming the virus can be found across a broad region of the country. A paper detailing the findings was published just days after the new genetic type (HeV-g2) was detected in a horse near Newcastle in New South Wales, the most southern case of Hendra yet recorded. Hendra virus can be transmitted from flying foxes to horses, and from horses to people. Previous studies had found the virus in flying foxes in Queensland and parts of New South Wales. After monitoring flying fox samples from 2013-2021, researchers at CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) found the new genetic type in flying foxes in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia. ACDP is a World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reference laboratory for Hendra and Nipah virus diseases. Reference expert and CSIRO scientist Dr Kim Halpin said spillover of the disease from flying

foxes to horses has still only been reported in Queensland and New South Wales. “However, because Hendra Virus Genotype 2 is so genetically similar to the original Hendra virus, there is a potential risk to horses wherever flying foxes are found in Australia,” Dr Halpin said. “It’s important to note that Hendra has never been reported to spread directly from flying foxes to humans – it’s always been transmitted from infected horses to humans. “We expect this new genetic type would behave the same way. "And given the similarities, while more research is needed, we expect the existing Hendra virus vaccine for horses should work against this new type too. “This finding really underscores the importance of research into flying foxes – it's crucial to helping us understand and protect Australians against the viruses they can carry.” Another project, called ‘Horses as Sentinels, led by the University of Sydney and CSIRO and funded by a Biosecurity Innovation Program

Dr Steve Dennis, President of Equine Veterinarians Australia, said the findings are a reminder there’s a risk of Hendra virus wherever there are flying foxes and horses. “Owners and any people who interact with horses can reduce the risk of infection from Hendra virus and other zoonotic viruses through vaccination of horses or humans where available, wearing appropriate PPE, and seeking veterinary attention for sick horses,” Dr Dennis said. CSIRO and the ‘Horses as Sentinels’ project team have been working closely with vets and laboratories around Australia to implement improved tests for horses with signs of Hendra virus disease. IT’S not rocket science, it’s simply good horse sense. When we are on the roads we need to take extra care when driving near horses. Drivers are being reminded to brush up on some of the lesser-known road rules when driving near horses as part of an awareness campaign rolling out to keep motorists and riders safe on country roads. Port Stephens and the Myall Coast have active equestrian communities and it is important that we act accordingly when we see horses and livestock on the road. There’s also every chance that Port and Myall residents

will come across tourist horse and cart operators either in the Bay or on a day out in the Hunter wine country. So knowing the rules is important. Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said it was important to remember that riders and horse-drawn vehicles have the same rights and responsibilities as other drivers, motorcycle riders and cyclists using the road. “Horses and other livestock aren’t uncommon on roads in the bush, and this campaign reminds everyone to share the road safely,” Mr Toole said. “Drivers should slow down and allow plenty of

room when passing a horse, whether it’s being ridden, led or pulling a vehicle. "Horses are easily spooked and can be unpredictable, so don’t use your horn or rev your engine. “Horses are considered a vehicle on the road, so riders need to obey the road rules, ride on the left-hand side in the same direction as traffic, avoid tight corners or crests and try to keep a good line of sight.” In the last 10 years, there have been nine fatalities involving a ridden horse, while there were 54 casualty crashes involving a riderless horse struck by a vehicle, resulting in the deaths of two people and serious injuries to 15 others.

The Country Women’s Association (CWA) of NSW President Stephanie Stanhope said an incident earlier this year, which saw a rider injured and a horse euthanized after being hit by a vehicle, served as a reminder to keep up to date on road rules. “We are seeing too many close calls and often these animals are a major part of a rider’s livelihood, so we ask that motorists are respectful when sharing the road with horse riders and horsedrawn vehicles to avoid any unfortunate incidents,” Ms Stanhope said. “Riders should also be aware of their surroundings, including traffic, pedestrians, road surfaces and changing weather conditions, and, if

possible, ride during daylight hours. “It is also good practice to avoid tight corners or crests and instead ride on roads where motorists have a good

Fighting Fires With Tech By Marian SAMPSON AFTER the black summer bushfires we all know that something has to change. Our attitude to climate change being one of these. Another, the way we go about fighting fires. Technology is now being deployed in new ways to help our firefighters and to put safety first. New technology is being deployed across NSW to bolster firefighting efforts and safety, including ground-breaking drones providing firefighters with specialised images and data from incidents in ‘real time’. Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott joined Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Paul Baxter at the Emergency Services Academy in Orchard Hills last week to inspect the newest technology designed to enhance firefighter situational awareness, and improve incident planning

and preparation. The tech package will see a $57.4 million investment by the NSW Government, as part of its overall $480 million response to the Independent Bushfire Inquiry following the Black Summer Bushfires of 2019/20. The ‘connected firefighter’ package includes Drones or Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) which provide images and data from incidents in realtime, to assist firefighters with incident planning. These drones can now also assist HAZMAT crews with chemical and gas detection. Also being deployed on the ground will be Cell On Wheels (CoWs) are mobile modules equipped with communications technology, which can also provide power for extended periods, especially useful in remote parts of the State without coverage. These new technologies

will be teamed with upgrades to FRNSW Mobile Command Centres, ensuring communications between incident management teams and firefighters. To enhance communications Vehicles will become WiFi hubs or Vehicle as a Node (VaaNs) which will provide mobile 4G network in remote locations where satellite connection is limited. Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said that the NSW Government is providing record funding towards initiatives which are bolstering our community safety. “What is apparent is that our emergency services are entering a tech boom, one which rightly puts NSW ahead of the pack this bushfire season,” Mr Elliott said. “These assets will ensure our first responders are safe as they enter dangerous and volatile fire

NUMBERS were down at bowls this week due to many of our members being away, bowling at North Haven. Tuesday 19 October saw a game of 3 bowls triples and a game of four bowls pairs, 18 ends. In the pairs game, Robyn Beaumont and Judy McGavock had a lead of 3 (9 v 6), on the 7th end bowling against Jean Glover and Dale Winter. On the next end Robyn and Judy scored a massive 7 shots, the score now 16 v 7. Jean and Dale were not deterred by this, taking control of the game on the 11th end, winning the next 6 ends, score now 17 all. Two ends left to bowl

I HAVE always been an admirer of traditional fishing boats. From my childhood years in South Australia, at Victor Harbor and Stenhouse Bay, there were many examples of ‘clinker’ fishing boats, solidly crafted and powered by oar or ‘putt putt’ motors and occasionally, by that mastery of industrial design, the British Seagull outboard. Later, on family vacations over many years, there was the fleet of clinker built timber fishing boats at Taylors boatshed (now being transformed into a Merivale F&B outlet) at Forster’s Bay, Narooma, some rumoured to have gone regularly to Montague Island chasing kingfish. How I wish I had acquired one of those.

Fortunately, a couple have been restored at the Wooden Boats’ shed at Forster’s Bay and feature in the annual ‘Boats Afloat’ regatta. Later, on my first trip to Europe in the mid seventies, my first exposure to the Mediterranean lifestyle was driving into the fishing port of Selce, in what was then Yugoslavia and seeing for the first time the traditional wooden fishing boats, which appeared suspended in air when lit at night over the crystal clear water. Since then I have spent many wondrous occasions admiring similar craft along the eastern and northern Mediterranean and Adriatic coast from Turkey through to Portugal. My first exposure to the traditional fishing boats at Hawks Nest was watching

the annual mullet run, through autumn and early winter, on Jimmy’s Beach. These spartan, highly functional craft were rowed out, nets trailing from the stern, to surround the schools of mullet. Little has changed today, with the exception of the use of cleverly modified fishing boats with ‘jetski’ propulsion. I have since discovered that there are a number of ‘LFB’ mullet boats, still working around Tamboi. After tiring of yachts and power boats of all shapes and sizes, which progressively became too difficult for me to handle alone, I decided to go on the hunt for what I always called a ‘mullet boat. I found a number in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, and in spite of leaving numerous notes saying “are you interested in selling this boat?”, I got nowhere. There were however a couple in Mirreen Street in

THE ladies enjoyed calm weather for the October Monthly Mug on Wednesday 20 October. B.Gordon was the winner with 69n (and 26 putts!) from T-L.Smith with 74n. 20 vets played on Thursday 21. T.Crowther was the winner with 38 pts from J.Graham with 36 pts and 3rd was H.Pierson with 34pts. Hawks Nest of which I was aware and an opportunity arose in 2015 when I saw a person in the yard with them. I went in and enquired. It was my lucky day, as I met Robert McRae, who was the owner of one of the boats, and was visiting Hawks Nest from Hervey Bay. Robert had inherited the boat from his brother Peter, a local second generation fisherman. The boat had been unused for a number of years, was full of water and sadly neglected. It appeared however in sound condition. It had been built locally in Tea Gardens, sometime last century. The construction of this boat and many others of the era was timber framing with fibreglass sheeting, with a flat deck for stacking fish boxes and double hull construction for buoyancy. When Robert and a mate got the motor running and bailed out the water, a deal was done, with ‘brokerage’

COUNCIL Round-Up

Tea Gardens office closure TEA Gardens office was only open for limited hours and closed last Thursday to allow for it to be recarpeted following the recent vandal attack. Hours this week will return to 10am to 4pm hours. The office will need to close again in several weeks’ time for repainting and Council will advise the community when this will occur. Working with farmers for catchment management Council and Hunter Local Land Services (LLS) are working together for catchment improvement and farm management. Works include revegetation and weed control along streams, creeks, drainage lines, dams and wetlands. Restoring riparian and wetland vegetation helps prevent sediment and nutrients from washing into waterways during rain events, keeping rivers and estuaries clean for fishing, boating, swimming and oyster production. The vegetation also provides biodiversity outcomes, providing habitat for birds, reptiles and frogs.

Benefits to farmers include improved water quality in their dams, tree shelter belts for stock and a healthy and biodiverse landscape in which native species provide natural insect control and pollination. Projects are underway in Pampoolah, Wallamba, The Branch, Stroud and the Myall River catchment. Destination Services Each day we move one step closer to business as usual with Destination Services staff working to ensure all Visitor Centres are compliant with the NSW Health regulations. Believe it or not, visitation is currently still slow, however this is expected to rise with the anticipated lifting of restrictions on November 1 for vaccinated people. Accommodation bookings for the Christmas holiday season are looking very strong with many providers already booked out. Preparations are underway to re-open our volunteer visitor centres - Bulahdelah, Tea Gardens and Pacific Palms - in readiness for summer. These centres experienced extended closures due to Covid-19, lockdowns and management changes. I look forward to seeing them open and our local volunteers doing what they do best – welcoming tourists with a smile and information. COVID Testing Sewage Systems Last week was the first week of expanded testing in our area, the results so far have again shown a positive detection in Taree (consistent with current cases) as well as the first detection recorded at our Hawks Nest Plant. So be vigilant and even with the slightest symptom get tested. I know that Kate Washington and Council will be proactive in calling for more pop-up testing clinics to encourage greater levels of testing at Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest.

It takes many shapes and forms from surfing, swimming and sailing to hockey, cricket and croquet with a host of options all designed to keep us fit, engaged and active. The sport and recreation sector has scored a $25 million funding boost as part of the COVID 19 Economic Recovery Strategy, to support the return of community sport as restrictions ease. The NSW Government’s

Sport and Recreation Recovery and Community Rebuild Package will provide financial support, assistance and participation opportunities, particularly in areas hardest hit by the COVID lockdown.
