By Tara CAMPBELL IN 2020, eight farmers in The Branch undertook work on their farms and properties to improve wetland and riparian corridors along the Karuah River. Visitors were encouraged to come along to a free field day on Friday 21 May for presentations about the program as well as a walk on one of the farms involved in the project to see the improvements. Dr Steven Lucas presented a short talk about how the improvements came about.

NORTH Arm Cove Rate Payers Association have created the North Arm Cove Initiative, a plan for a sustainable community and future for the area. Currently these landowners are unable to build on their properties due to the current paper land subdivision status. The MidCoast Council is currently developing the Draft Rural Strategy for exhibition later in the year. A representative of the Council said, “Some of the challenges we discuss on a regular basis with land owners include: lack of basic services and infrastructure, including a large number of properties that do not have access to a publicly owned, constructed c NOTA Graphics - Ref: TGCC_MYALL_2752021_NEINA

management. “Overall our goal is to help farmer’s increase their productivity, but also recreational fishing as well as professional aquaculture,” he said. “We're linking up all these different projects in the sub-catchment for the sake of broader catchment benefit,” Rye said. Dr Jamie Potts from the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment addressed the attendees, breaking down the specifics of how projects are monitored. “With this project and others in the area, we’re looking at monitoring improvements in ecosystem health and various other variables as a result of similar
works that local councils have implemented including cattle exclusion fences and Riparian revegetation. “We’re looking at water quality variables including the amount of sediment in the water, faecal bacteria in the water like E. Coli and we’re also looking at a range of other ecosystem indicators like vegetation composition, fish and frogs and water bugs; so we measure these things widely.” Through the project, over 270 hectares of wetlands and 50 hectares of riparian vegetation has been secured on The Branch and Karuah rivers. It is acknowledged the cost of widening, or attaching an appendage is beyond Council finances and the suggestion has been made to have the footpaths dedicated to one-way for wheeled traffic. Whilst Council appear to be in agreement, a stumbling block is where to exit on the Tea Gardens side. The Progress Association believe the obvious and safest exit is to use the area under the bridge as is the case on the Hawks Nest side, however NSW Marine Parks have proprietary land along the river edge. As a stopgap, Council are considering the installation of a traffic island on Myall St.
Mr Gordon Grainger of the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Progress Association spoke to News Of The Area about an event that occurred in the area this week which almost resulted in a serious traffic accident. He believes that the introduction of a traffic island on Myall St, in an area where the drivers line of sight can be impacted by direct sunlight at certain times, has potentially dangerous implications. “Apparently the driver of the vehicle panicked at the loss of sight, stopped the vehicle in the middle of the roadway, sending traffic in all directions. “Remember, that time of the morning is very busy. “The walkers took charge and moved the vehicle to the

Stroud: community funding round open THE Stroud community can apply for funding through the Duralie Community Fund for projects which will benefit local education, environment, health, infrastructure, arts, leisure and cultural heritage. Not-for-profit organisations and community groups in the vicinity of the Duralie Mine are invited to apply for funding between
$5,000 and $50,000 for projects which will enhance community life. The funding round will open on Monday 24 May, and organisations can apply online via the Duralie Community Fund application form before Friday 18 June 2021 at www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/ grants. Funds for successful projects will be available in July. A community
funding round was last offered in 2018, and the funds assisted with the completion of works at Stroud Showground in the interim. Previous funding has provided many projects in Stroud and surrounding areas, including the now completed Stroud Showground upgrades, the provision of an accessible unisex toilet at Allen Park, upgrades to community facilities and purchases of equipment. “The Duralie Community Fund offers

The Will contract also usually provides that the survivor will not diminish the assets except as is necessary to pay for the reasonable living and day to day expenses of the survivor. Mutual Wills is a complex area of the law but can be very important, particularly in the event of making fair provision for beneficiaries in blended families. Mutual Wills vs Mirror Wills Part 2
I have previously explained the difference between Mirror Wills and Mutual Wills. If a couple intend that their Wills be Mutual Wills (ie that the survivor will not change his or her Will), then the safest way to document the agreement is to have a Contract between the parties (entered into at the time when the Wills are signed). The Contract is relatively simple and outlines the agreement between the two Will makers. It provides that neither party can change his or her Will without the agreement of the other party. It follows that after the death of the first of the couple, such consent cannot be obtained and therefore the Will of the survivor cannot be changed. If there is a breach of the agreement, then the usual remedies are available to those parties (ie beneficiaries) who may have been prejudiced or suffered a loss as a result of the breach. Another way of documenting the agreement is for each party to make a statutory declaration at the time of making the Will to the

Students Rise Up for Star Struck 2021 By Tara CAMPBELL STAR Struck is back again in 2021 with the fitting theme ‘Rise Up’. After a devastating cancellation in 2020 due to COVID-19, students from all over Newcastle, Port Stephens and the Central Coast are ready to hit the stage again in what is sure to be one of the biggest celebrations of the entertainment industry. Star Struck is a show that features thousands of primary and high school students from the local area. Students and schools have the opportunity to audition for roles in drama, dance, orchestra and singing, with only the very best being q Irrawang High School Drummers as part of Star Struck 2019
selected. Casey Horner, Star Struck Operations Manager, said the theme of Rise Up was initially intended to show support to all those who had endured bushfires and floods in 2019/20. “It was symbolic of the rising up from the elements, from people working together to Rise Up from adversity,” said Ms Horner. “Now after another year of hardship and change the theme seems equally fitting, and a positive way to come together once again. “As 2020 changed people’s lives in ways we never thought possible, we felt it right to plan a show that reflected change and acknowledged the current social, economic
and physical landscape in our communities.” This year’s show will be significantly different from previous productions in the past, with 3000 students divided across two casts. There will be no interval and the show has been reduced to 90 minutes. From the Port Stephens and Myall Coast area there are a number of talented students taking part in every aspect of the show, from featured dancers to drama students. The show will be held at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 June 2021 with four performances in total and the casts assigned as follows: Friday 18 June 11.30am Matinee – Cast A Friday 18 June 7pm – Cast B Saturday 19 June 1.30pm Matinee – Cast B Saturday 19 June 7pm – Cast A Tickets can be purchased through Ticketek.

Having fun with a couple of larks TONY Ledger is not only recognised for his wildlife photography, but also for his keen sense of humour, which goes down well at Myall U3A Photography Group meetings. And he has merged his talents to produce this shot of two Magpie Larks with a fun caption he wrote for it: I said, ‘Your hearing aid is coming tomorrow!’ “It’s good,” said Tony, “if one can occasionally introduce some comedy
into a photograph. “I’m always on the lookout for such situations, though one often has to wait a long time, as animals are unpredictable but worth the wait.” Tony’s interest in photography began in 1954, taking shots of UK railway steam engines, motor racing and motorcycle speedway, a time “when you could stand inside the track close to the action, though it’s not allowed today”.
In those days Tony processed the photographs himself developing the prints in a dark room where, he wryly notes, his girlfriend commented, “Shall we go into the darkroom and see what develops?” Each month the group selects a member’s photograph to appear in the Myall Coast News of the Area. Progress Association and Reference Group update By Gordon GRAINGER
BOTH the Progress Association and the Southern Area Reference Group were able to hold full meetings this month and again, we can report on a number of items of interest. We have good and bad news from our political leaders, so firstly, the good news is that Port Stephens State MP, Kate Washington has been successful in obtaining an undertaking to upgrade the Tea Gardens Ambulance Station. Good on yer Kate! Now the bad news. MP Dr David Gillespie’s news release dated 5 May, headed Budget Update, extols the good things the budget held for the constituents of his Federal Seat of Lyne. He included his discussions with Ministers

re the need to upgrade five key intersections between Newcastle and Port Macquarie. Surprisingly, the turn off into Myall Way from the M1 was not one of them. This, despite the promise made some 15 years or more ago, to instal an overpass— despite the fact we have had a recent fatality and a near miss—despite the fact that this community is burgeoning with tourists and despite the fact we have the oldest demographic residency in Australia. Thinking it to be an oversight, we wrote and called his office, to be politely informed that his office receives over 400 emails per day and that he may be able to address the issue in due course. Not a good look for your loyal backers in this community Dr David! The Progress Association introduced a new Sub Committee formed to gauge community support for the up-grade and possible re-development of the Tea Gardens
Pool. Public swimming pools are an important amenity and multi-function facility. It can provide water safety and learn to swim lessons, therapeutic and sports injury rehabilitation. It should provide all year use and availability of community use for functions. This is on top of the general maintenance, sorely needed. The Committee is seeking widespread support and you can help by signing Expressions of Support at a number of outlets in Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens. The sunken houseboat opposite the Tea Gardens ramp has been an eyesore for some time and is now in the hands of the NSW Maritime, who in turn, engage contractors to complete the removal. Due to a change in contracture compliances with safety issues, there has been a delay and Maritime anticipate being able to progress the

situation in a few weeks’ time. Progress Association meetings are held every second Monday of the month at 7pm, currently in the Baptist Church. Future meetings will host speakers including Oyster researchers, Lions Club and the community, Kate Washington and the State Government. We are also hopeful of hearing from the Directors of Mid Coast Council of the many and varied issues affecting this community. Details will follow and all are welcome to attend. The Southern Area Reference Group met with representatives from Council, North Arm Cove, Pindimar and Bulahdelah, as well as the local groups Lions, PA and others. With the onset of potential winter storm lows and subsequent erosion along Jimmys Beach, Council has contracted CCB Envico to begin sand pumping via the Sand Transfer System. CCB are installing equipment and anticipate beginning the operation this week. They expect to move approx. 25,000 cu.m. over the next 4 to 6 weeks, beginning west of Karuma St. It is expected this exercise will be conducted twice a year. Bulahdelah have formed a Reference Group in collaboration with MidCoast Council to examine possible improvements and enhancements to the town. North Arm Cove are concerned with the increase in car dumping and have asked for assistance from Council. A number of issues are still outstanding and it is hoped we can report on successful conclusions in our next report.

didn’t participate. “But I soon realised these guys were friendly, straight shooters and I learned so much on a variety of prostate related issues from their experiences. “So much so, I was disappointed I hadn’t joined earlier.” Another longstanding group member Phillip Everett joined the group in 2013 when his PSA was elevated. And it was through another member that he was made aware of specialised treatment that later proved to be successful for him. “Members have a wide and various range of experience of treatments and specialists,” said Phillip Everett. “Some members are still weighing up their options, while others are plain sailing from detection, to treatment, through to having undetectable PSA (i.e in remission) for the last four to five years.” The secret to surviving prostate cancer, he said, was early detection, getting tested regularly, and receiving treatment early when all treatment options would still be available. Then, an informed choice could be made. “Watch and wait is no longer an option,” he said. “If your PSA is elevated, or doubles over 12 months, your GP should be referring you to a urologist.”

910 Australians died from Covid-19 in about 12 months, while 3,152 males died from prostate cancer in Australia in 2020. Phillip pointed out that often there are no symptoms. If you have to get out of bed at night to relieve your bladder pressure, you might have a prostate problem (not necessarily cancer), but you should see your GP and have a PSA blood test. “Please do your utmost to have the 40-yearolds and older in your family tested regularly. “Early detection, through having a regular PSA test should give them the option of most treatments. “Delay will potentially exclude many of those options as the cancer develops, leaving radical surgery as the main and prospectively expensive option, with likely follow up chemo and/or radiotherapy.” Meanwhile, group members recently paid tribute to the sterling efforts of retiring convener Jim Taylor who led the group for a number of years. Jim, however, isn’t going anywhere, he intends to attend upcoming meetings and to welcome “lots of new members” over a cuppa. Feedback on Greening initiatives “With such a large area, limited resources and continued growth, we’ve taken a highly targeted approach to greening, focusing our efforts for the most effective outcomes.” The draft strategy identifies five key areas or ‘principles’, and actions that can be undertaken to enhance the quality and extent of vegetation in the region. Some of these include initiatives to cool urban areas, resources to assist in planting the right vegetation in the right places, and platforms for partnering and collaborating with local communities. Another principle focuses on retaining what the region already has, recognising that individual significant trees and tracts of mature vegetation can take many years to regenerate. A STRATEGY that aims to manage and enhance tree canopy cover and green spaces across the region is currently on public exhibition. There’s no doubt that the leafy character of our towns and villages, and our rural and natural landscapes are part of what we love about the MidCoast. As part of retaining our green spaces and planning for our future, MidCoast Council has developed a draft ‘Greening Strategy’. “The strategy acknowledges the importance of trees and vegetation in our area, whether that’s through improving amenity and recreational opportunities, minimising the impact of climate change, or delivering economic benefits,” said Gerard Tuckerman, MidCoast Council’s Manager of Natural Systems and Acting Manager Land Use Planning.

Under the proposed approach, outlined in the draft ‘Vegetation Management Policy’, areas that provide an important contribution to ecology and landscape/ amenity values would be subject to the policy, and the ‘Tree Preservation Order’ currently applied through a ‘blanket approach’ in the Great Lakes region would be removed. Within the Draft Vegetation Management Policy, are urban areas such as Hawks Nest, Pacific Palms and Smiths Lake which provide habitat for species such as koalas and squirrel gliders; villages like North Arm Cove, Bundabah and Pindimar where welltreed, ‘leafy’ character contributes to amenity and property values; larger environmental sites around Coomba Park, Charlotte Bay, and Boolambayte; and Large

Memories to Share With Future Generations By Marian SAMPSON OFTEN it is not until we are facing an uncertain future that we think that now is the hour to tell our stories. Or that our family and friends seek out knowledge of our past. At Life Documentaries the team dedicate themselves to telling our stories as they are recollected as we sit on the cusp between retirement and a calmer life. As our future looms, so too does the best time to recollect the things we have done that make our lives remarkable. While many of us believe that we have lived an unremarkable life, we are often surprised by how unique it is when we start to tell our stories. Life Documentaries is one way of documenting the life that you have led. It is a vehicle for those who would like their life story as told by themselves added to the family history. Herve Carlos of Life Documentaries told News Of The Area, “It is important to understand that we all

“For many once they start telling their stories they actually realise just how important these stories will be to their loved ones.”
Many of us at the age of retirement start to have the time to relax and reflect on our lives and this is the perfect time to start telling our stories. For older people there are many memories that seem to come from around the kitchen table, things like not leaving the table until the meal is finished or chewing each mouthful of food 32 times before swallowing. “One of the most interesting stories that we have recorded was one shared by a Sydney based entertainer,” Herve said. “This musician was employed in a grand old building with a grand piano at the entry where she was
to play. “In true performer style the musician sat and played on the piano in the entryway. “The doorbell rang and a gentleman entered and was escorted upstairs by a beautifully dressed lady. “Around half an hour later the scenario repeated itself. “It turned out that the musician was playing in the foyer of what she now believes was a high end Sydney brothel!” Herve believes that telling stories such as this to our loved ones in our own voices brings our past and their family history to life. This story doesn’t just tell of an entertainer – it shares the surprise and humour that would have accompanied the evening. It turns an older person into someone that has lived life in full colour and perhaps lived and seen a little more than the rest of us. “When people start telling their stories, a spark comes to their eyes, they realise some of the

Many will probably watch tonight’s two-round cookoff fascinated by the ingredients. But would you use them in their own kitchen? Are you “game”? Full-blown foodies are in for a treat, but can we expect an even more challenging episode dedicated to something such as offal soon? Probably not. Chicken intestines just aren’t that charming, but there’s a sense of adventure in cooking game meat. Tonight, the contestants have five minutes to identify 14 displayed game meats. The lowest scorers will have to concoct something delicious and impress judges Mel, Jock (above centre) and Andy (above right) in order to stay. It’s not exactly lick-yourlips television, but is kind of educational.
From the deft hands of writer and producer Jed Mercurio (Line of Duty, Bodyguard) comes this scenically beautiful and emotional dark whodunnit. If you watched the premiere episode last week, you could be forgiven for thinking that Bloodlands has a bythe-numbers police procedural feel to it, albeit a top-quality one at that. But as episode two unfolds tonight it soon becomes clear that not only is its lead, James Nesbitt, (right), a scenestealer of the highest order, but that this kidnapping story is more complicated and nimble than first appearances suggest. Tonight, detective Tom’s (Nesbitt) search appears to have been led down a false trail. It’s gripping, rewarding viewing.

WHEN you live in a ‘sunburnt country’ like we do, solar power is a wonderful way to harness the sun’s power to our benefit. And that benefit isn’t just financial. Installing clean, pure energy from the sun reduces our footprint by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and our reliance on fossil fuels. Of course, you will save on power bills, leaving you more money in your pocket for other things. And that’s got to be appealing! There is an outlay but there are also wonderful rebates upon installation and as soon as your panels are approved and turned on, your money saving starts immediately. I’m seeing more and more properties with solar panels for all electrical appliances and those that are solely hot water. Buyers are discerning and solar panels; water tanks and other eco-friendly and money saving initiatives are viewed favourably. The absence of such initiatives isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker for buyers, but properties that have them, do, as you say, have an ‘edge’ and that can sway a buyer comparing two fairly similar properties. So, yes, give yourself an edge, and enjoy the benefits in the meantime.

According to Wotif, Port Stephens has seen an increase of 895 per cent in interest over the past six months, compared to pre-pandemic levels. The list put Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula in the top spot nationally, followed by Port Stephens. The Murray in Victoria was next with an 800 per cent increase. Port Stephens found itself in the company of regions including Albury, Kangaroo Island and The Barossa Valley. This increase in interest is primarily due to Australian domestic travel, prompted by campaigns including ‘Holiday Here This Year’. The scenario you painted, for example, would translate to 10 points off the offending side’s final score. Final days to comment on Council’s draft operational plan and budget HURRY! Time is running out for you to comment on a draft plan outlining projects and services to be delivered across the region during 2021-22, with the opportunity for feedback closing Friday 28 May. Operational plans are prepared each year as part of Council’s commitment to implementing its four year
Delivery Program. The draft plan for 202122 is currently on exhibition, alongside the draft annual operating budget and proposed fees and charges. As well as delivering on the projects, services and facilities outlined in the Delivery Program, this year’s operational plan has added context as the local community recovers from the
impact of recent bushfires and floods. Reflected throughout the plan is Council’s commitment to delivering for the community in a way that adds value and builds trust. Mixed results for Karuah sides ON Saturday the Karuah Rooettes traveled to Maitland to take on Maitland United while the Roos were also away against Stroud. The Rooettes were on fire with Ashlei Grande scoring within the first few minutes. Ebony Oakley converted to take the score to 6-0. Chloe Zdebski was next to score, followed by Ebony Oakley who converted her own try to extend the Rooettes lead to 16-0. Chloe Zdebski was in again 15 minutes into the first half to make it 20-0. The Rooettes really started to pull away when pocket rocket Kayla Campbell scored three more tries, of which one was converted, to take the score to 34-0 at half time.
The second half saw Chloe Zdebski cross the line for her hat trick to make it 38-0. Then Kayla Campbell got her fourth try for the day with Ebony Oakley converting to take the score to 44-0. Next to score was Bec Roe, with the try converted for 50-0. Just before full time Maitland United scored to take the final score to 50-4. Meanwhile in the men’s competition, an under strength Karuah Roos side travelled to Stroud to take on the Raiders. The Roos started strong, jumping out to a 12-0 lead with Jack Croese finding his way over the line with a strong run next to the posts with Aiden Bills kicking the
extras. Next to score was Ryan Saunders with a huge effort, bumping off would be defenders, with Aiden Bills again adding the extras. After the positive start, the game became an end to end affair, with Stroud next to score. A penalty goal close to half time saw Karuah leading 12-8 at the break. At the resumption of the game, the Roos lost front rower Jack Croese to a shoulder injury, and the team struggled to complete sets and get out of their own end. After a mountain of possession and with fatigue setting in, Stroud crossed the line for five unanswered tries in the second half. Next Saturday will be Karuah’s first double header for the season with the Rooettes taking on Abermain at 1.45pm before the Roos take on Tea Gardens at the 3pm kick off.

Professor Terry Nolan, public health physician at the Doherty Institute, says getting the flu vaccine remains as important as ever in 2021, given the unpredictability of flu in each year. “It’s never easy to predict what kind of flu season is ahead of us,” said Professor Nolan. The impacts of flu should not be underestimated, we were recently reminded of this by Virgin CEO Jayne Hrdlicka who when speaking at a business lunch said, “Some people may die, but it will be way smaller than with the flu. “We’re forgetting the fact that we’ve learnt how to live with lots of viruses and challenges over the years, and
we’ve got to learn how to live with this,” she said. 2019 was one of the worst flu seasons on record with almost 300,000 notifications of laboratoryconfirmed influenza to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) and more than 800 flu-related deaths reported. Dr Jonathan Anderson, Seqirus Head of Medical Affairs Asia Pacific, said the peak flu season in Australia usually occurs between July and September and there is still time to act to ensure that flu numbers stay as low as possible. “Achieving high flu vaccination coverage is a key population health strategy for helping to reduce pressure on our hospitals and health care system,” said Dr Anderson. “Flu vaccination remains as important as ever - while high-rates of vaccination and social distancing had driven down influenza rates last season, we can’t be complacent about the potential impacts of flu.”

IT was a beautiful autumn day on Thursday 20 May for bowls and with Pennants all but over for most teams, mysteriously only 36 players took part in the Wednesday Nominated Triples. The emphatic winners were Danny Johnson, Ross Barry and Scott Fitzalan. The lucky losers were Rob Jones, Geoff Page and Brian McPhie. Lucky Dennis Wilberforce won the coveted Garden Eatery voucher, I was one off. Our thanks to the Garden Eatery for their continued support. 22 May The beautiful weather continued for the remaining semi-final of the Club Championship Pairs which was played today with the team of Chris Ross and Scott Fitzalan taking on Greg Smith and Stu Dorahy.

Throw an immaculate green into the mix and the stage was set for a tremendous game. Spectators were not disappointed. The standard of the bowls played was of a very high quality by all four players and the game see-sawed back and forth without either team claiming dominance. As one would expect the match came down to the last end with Chris and Ross holding a one-shot, 16-15, advantage. They managed to capitalise on that during the last end and won the match 19-15.
