French Classes reconvene for 2021

THE Myall U3A French classes have joyfully reconvened after a 10 month break.

Convenor George Nadal said that he is ready for another year of classes and the usual monthly 'Matinee

des Bavards', or morning tea and chat. The students have had a long break, so many have

been able to catch up with the finer points of grammar. However, nothing beats being in class and interacting

with fellow students. Last week the students in the advanced class were able to practice their speaking

give up until they 'get it right’. There are three levels of French, so people who wish to join the classes can find their own level. The Beginners class runs from 9.30 till 11am, the Intermediate class from 11.30 till 1.00pm and the Advanced class from 1.30 till 3pm.

The classes are held at The Old Library, Hawks Nest, next to the Community Centre. Current Enrolment Forms can be found at The Tea Gardens Library and the Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens Post Offices. For further information just search Myall U3A.

The Council have developed a MidCoast Dingo/ Wild Dog Management Plan, as a result of the incline in reports of dingo behaviour of the area. The management procedure and plan for the area are being modelled on the successful Fraser Island Disco Conservation and Risk Management Strategy that was brought in in July 2013. The first steps of the plan include: informing locals, visitors and tourist operators to never feed or allow dingoes access to food,

a Council operated and monitored register of dingo and wild dog community reports and the commission and installation of signage to promote awareness and education on safe dingo practices. Members of the community have voiced their opinions on the new procedure and plan. “Education in schools, letterbox drops, and fines for people not adhering to the rules should also apply. “Everyone needs to be responsible for their actions and make informed decisions especially if approached by a family of Dingoes. “ I just hope this is not all too late and we will see a behavioural change sooner rather than later hence providing the best outcome for

everyone. “Positive sightings should also be encouraged,” said Melissa Freebody The Council stated, “While we have developed our management plan, the overarching responsibility for coordination and readership of wild dog control and management across New South Wales is with Local Land Services.” “In regards to the outcome of reporting incidents. FOUR people from Hawks Nest needed to be rescued on Tuesday 16/2/21 after the vessel they were in almost capsized on the Myall River at Windy Woppa. Police were called after the aluminium trailer boat that two men and two women were in began to take on water. As the vessel began to sink all

passengers attempted to hold on the boat with currents drifting them towards Hawks Nest. Upon arrival Police sighted all four occupants in the water attempting to swim the vessel back to shore. None of the passengers were wearing life jackets.

Shortly after the arrival of police a member of the public arrived in their own boat and towed the partially submerged vessel and all four occupants to shore. No injuries were sustained with all occupants being assessed by NSW Ambulance.

4WDing and Sharing Spaces On Our Beaches By Marian SAMPSON

PEAK holiday times have seen an increase of vehicles driving on our beaches. Having a beach permit and knowing how to responsibly drive a 4WD on the beach are two different things. Speed limits apply as do normal road rules. Our beaches are shared zones. We have families enjoying themselves. People fishing and we have dogs on and off lead areas. In the Hawks Nest area and on Jimmys Beach a Mid North Coast Council permit is required to drive on the beach. While four wheel

driving can be a great way to explore beaches and beat the COVID-19 blues, care is needed when using the beach as a road. Beach Vehicle Access Permits and brochures showing vehicle access points, are available at the local Visitor Information Centres, Council Customer Service Centre, and selected local bait and tackle stores. It is a requirement for all vehicles on the beach to clearly display a valid permit on the bottom passenger side of your vehicle’s windscreen across the MidCoast region, but it also comes with being responsible and agreeing to comply with beach rules, which are enforced by Council Rangers and the NSW Police

Force. The maximum beach speed is 40km/h, with pedestrians always having right of way, and vehicles must stay at least 15 metres away from pedestrians. Recently a dog was struck on Jimmys Beach by a vehicle. Council’s policy on dogs off leads states, “The Dogs on beaches policy enables dog owners to take their dogs on to beaches in a manner that does not impinge on the comfort or safety of other beach users.” Vehicles must also drive between the tide marks, which means remaining below the high tide mark and above the low tide mark. and it’s important we all take responsibility for our stunning coastline. Council has a legislative and custodial responsibility to make sure beach users and the environment are protected. Vehicles are not permitted to drive on vegetation, sand dunes or bird nesting areas. Mid Coast Council tells us that, “Our beaches offer

WITH the retail price of mud crabs hovering around $60/kg they were a much sought after crustacean by both professional and recreational fisherfolk alike. They still are, although the price has crashed to around the $20 mark. This was the result of the collapse of the export market to China. It is believed that recreational fishers catch more mud crabs than the professionals and that is why researchers need our help. The mud crab's life cycle is fascinating with the females spawning at sea. Each carries some two million to five million eggs under the flap beneath their shell and the hatchlings drift into bays and inlets to complete their life cycles. They live for about four years and NSW is one state where you can keep female

crabs as long as they are not carrying eggs. Females are easily identified as they have smaller nippers and a larger flap than the males. Mud crabs feed at night, spending their days in burrows around the foreshore and in the mangroves. Fisheries researchers want to know more and here is where you can help. If you catch any mud crabs, look for a 'T bar' tag which is attached where the swimmer fin joins the main body of the crab. Note the details of the tag number, the location of the catch, the date caught and the shell length. Ring fisheries on 4982 1232 and they will use the feedback to expand their knowledge and ensure a sustainable future for the mud crab in Port Stephens.

THE Scouts has long been an organisation that teaches young people about the outdoors, ingenuity and the environment. The dedicated adults who run these groups are always looking for new ways to teach these skills and the 1st Bulahdelah group has found a great one. Two of their leaders came up with the idea of building rafts out of materials rescued from the bin. The leaders, named by their scouts ‘The Pineapple’ and ‘Wombat’, wanted to develop an idea that would give their group

a chance to meet and compete with others in the area. To this end they have issued a challenge to scouts as far afield as Taree and Wingham and they have responded with enthusiasm. The first annual Upcycle Raft Race will be held on Good Friday in three separate races, one for each of the groups between 8 and 17 years old. One of the most distinctive marks of the scouting movement is their coloured neck scarves. Each group will be using theirs to mark their rafts. Hyrum Mohring, also known as ‘The

Pineapple’, is one of the organisers. “The kids have had a lot of fun going wild with designs,” he said. “Scouts is the kind of organization where you get life skills, in being outdoors and in teamwork and this activity suits the Scouts perfectly. “They are training as teams and working together on the actual building of the raft and then again to try and win the race.” Every participant that is able to get their raft across the line will be recognised for their achievements.

Finally, the Singing Bridge, the accident about to happen, which I will address separately. The upgrade of the Apex Park boat ramp is still waiting approval as is the installation of the 3-man fish cleaning table at the Moira Parade ramp. The much-heralded Pedestrian Access & Mobility Plan (PAMP) program seems to have sunk into obscurity. The management of the Sand Transfer System is yet to be finalised. The deterioration of the outdoor furniture along Marine Drive is only partly addressed. The upgrading of the public facilities near Bennetts Beach has not begun, nor do we have a starting date. Leash free areas for pets in Hawks Nest have not been addressed and there has been a marked increase

Being filter feeders, oysters are vital to the health of the Myall River.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 16 February: Social bowls played 2 games of Triples and a game of Fours with Ingrid Luck playing "swinger lead". Lorraine Murphy, Robyn Webster and Pat Baker played

a brilliant game bowling against Jean Glover, Lynne Green and Maynie Roberts. Whenever Maynie's team were holding shot either Lorraine, Robyn or Pat would remove the shot bowl or take the Jack back over to their bowls, they won the game by

22 points, 29 v 7. A close game on the next rink until the 10th end, (10 v 8) Lynda Richards, Judi Polak and Bette Saillard didn't add to their score of 8 for 5 ends whereas Sheril Johnson, Christine Fossey and Karen McPhie gained 6 points eventually winning 19 v 10. Ingrid, Jill McBride, Jeanette Emmett and Dot Dallas held a small lead all the

The winners on the day, winning with the highest margin were Lorraine, Robyn and Pat. Thursday 18 February: No bowls played due to rain. On Monday 15 February, Robyn Beaumont played in the Sectional Playoffs of the NSW Indoor Singles at Warilla but lost, so missed qualifying for the Australian Indoor this year.

A Golden Start to The Championships

On Friday 19 February Robyn represented TGWBC (along with 77 other champions) at the NSW Champion of Club Champion Singles, Robyn was eligible for entering this Championship as she won our Club's Major Singles Championship last year. Robyn bowled well defeating her first opponent, Jacqueline Rayment (Sutherland) by 14 shots. In Round 2 she won 25 v 11 bowling against Ashleigh Davis (Taren Point, a State

bowler). Unfortunately Robyn, lost in Round 3 to Sarah Boddington (Tuncurry Beach), also a State bowler. Sarah Boddington has made it through to the Quarter Final of her Section, the Final of this Championship will be held on Monday 22nd, February. Robyn confided in me that she was pleased with her results, "considering after Round 3 the only players left in her section of the draw were all at least 25 years younger.” Great bowling Robyn.

The Open Male Boat Crew of Max Young, Callan Sheldon, Barry Lachlan and Peter McLennan won the Gold Medal and The Open Female Boat Crew of Natalie Skelly, Susie Webb, Tess Nolan and Rosie Taylor also won the gold medal, making both crews Hunter Branch Champions.

The U/19 Boat Crew of Tyler Love, Tom McLennan, Cody Ross and Matthew Love narrowly missed the gold medal taking Silver. Two Gold and a Silver medal for the three crews was an awesome result in tricky, choppy and blustery surf conditions. All crews are now heading down to Mollymook the first weekend of March to contest the Australian Surf Rowers League Championships – hopefully to bring more Gold back to Bennett’s Beach.

A year on the land By Doug CONNOR WHAT a difference a year can make. This time last year, Clayton Hattam and his family were grappling with the impacts of severe drought on their mixed farming enterprise in Booral, in the Stroud Valley. The Hattam family have farmed in the area since 1979, and found themselves feeling the pinch in early 2020 after long periods of below average rainfall in the region. “We run a commercial free range egg production and some smaller flocks of pastured eggs,” said Clayton. “We also run quite a few head of Angus and Black Simmental cattle, running some breeders and producing some bulls,” he said. “Making sure that we have good quality stock water and pastures for feed is pretty important, and last year we didn’t have any of that really.” The lack of rainfall and above average temperatures throughout the region in previous years had placed water at an absolute premium. “The pastures were pretty well not existent and the water in the dams was pretty well dried up. “We were constantly pumping water from one dam to another. “We put down a bore for our cattle’s drinking purposes. “It was pretty stressful,” he said. Even for seasoned farmers like the Hattam’s, local conditions were as bad

as they had seen. They counted themselves lucky however, as neighbouring regions were hit even harder. “This area is a bit of a funny one. “We hadn’t had any substantial rain for quite some time, but we were doing it relatively better than some of the areas up near Gloucester. “They started the dry period a lot earlier than us, I know of places who were in really dire straits back in 2019, whereas we were still doing okay and still had some pastures and had some grass around us, but our dam levels were getting down quickly,” said Clayton. It was around the Christmas period of 2019 and early January 2020 when conditions, and the stress for the family, really started to take hold. “We were a bit better off than some others around the state, but for a coastal region to have that wasn’t something we had seen. “I am relatively young, but I know some of the older guys locally hadn’t seen the like of it in their lives, so it was pretty significant.” Eventually the rain came, and a year on, the Hattam’s farm is almost unrecognisable, with paddocks of red dirt replaced by pastures of vivid green. “There have been two components to it,” Clayton told News Of The Area. “We have had a lot of regular rainfall, so the dams are full and the grass is growing at a rate of knots,

but it has also been quite a bit cooler this summer. “In the heat we were constantly worrying about the chickens and keeping them comfortable.” Improved seasonal conditions have come as a relief to both family and flock. “This past Christmas was considerably less stressful than the year prior. “It was so hot in the dry, and we had a bit of relief this year. “It was a lot easier to run a farm this year than it was last year.” The Hattam’s have also been buoyed by strong cattle prices across the state. “Cattle prices are great, we thought they were high last year, and they seem to have picked up again after Christmas.” Before Clayton and his sister Emily returned to Booral ten years ago to run the family farm, his father Ron had been running meat birds

on the property for three decades. “It's been 40 years that my family has been on the property.” Clayton hopes for the good times to continue at Hattam Farm, with median rainfall expected for the coming months. “Life’s much easier with a lot of grass around and plenty of water in the dams,” he said. Using drone footage shot from above his property, Clayton has created a video comparing the farm in January 2020 to January 2021, to show the difference the drought made to conditions. “It’s amazing to see the contrast from January 2020 in drought and bushfires all around to January 2021 where we now have lush pastures and overflowing dams,” he said. “Should I proceed with the purchase of a house if termites have been detected?” KNOWLEDGE is power, so your question highlights the importance of getting pest/building inspections. The CSIRO estimates that 1 in 5 Australian homes will be visited by termites, which should, in some small way ease your fears because, very clearly, you are not alone! Once you have the inspection report you can make an informed decision based on the status of the infestation – is it historic or current? If historic, is the treatment under guarantee and is that transferable to you? Or you may be satisfied that the issue has been dealt with accordingly. If current, how extensive and what level of treatment is required to prevent future attacks? And at what cost, both of treatment and any repairs? Given the prevalence of termites in Australia, swiftly rejecting a property where termites might be active, may mean missing out on a brilliant opportunity. Vendors will accept there’s a problem and clauses can be included in the contract to ensure all necessary actions are taken, possibly at the vendor’s cost or this cost may be able to be negotiated from the agreed price. Or you may just wish to move forward regardless and have the damage and little critters dealt with yourself. Termites can be treated and eradicated, so don’t panic. Think calmly, clearly and logically, basing your decision on the facts and you’ll make the correct decision. An accident waiting to happen?

THE Singing Bridge was finished in the early 70’s when our towns were a lot different to now. We are growing and with that growth comes an increase in visitors as well as residents. We are an attraction to young and older bicycle riders. We are told to exercise more often and the bridge attracts pedestrian traffic including prams and a substantial increase in motorised wheelchairs due to an aging population. All good for a growing community, not good for an outdated bridge with narrow footpaths and carriageway. We are getting an increased number of incidents which will undoubtedly lead to serious accidents. Bicycles riding on the footpath, forcing pedestrians onto the roadway, motorised wheelchairs and prams meeting mid -bridge. Dog walkers being forced onto the roadway when passing. All this is exacerbated when drivers crossing the bridge toward Hawks Nest have the morning sun directly into their eyes. The long- term solution is to increase the size of the bridge. This won’t happen in the short term due to cost. The immediate solution is to have oneway footpaths for wheeled traffic and the

dismounting of bicycles using the footpath. Signs need to be policed. The Hawks Nest entrance is already in place with minimal cost of a ramp. The Tea Gardens exit is apparently a problem. The answer is already in place with a pathway leaving Myall St and then exiting under the bridge. These proposals have been put to Council over the past 2 years and received some sympathy, but no action. The stumbling point is the area directly under the bridge which is administered by Marine Parks and considered conservation. A concrete footpath would not be permitted under their terms, which Council seem to have accepted. The question I raise is, can bureaucracy out way the cost of loss of potential human life and is it strong enough to have Council back off without a fight? On the subject of the bridge, it is opportune to mention a couple of rules which are often forgotten by motorists and cyclists. It is legal to ride bicycles on the carriageway. However, riders should be mindful of motorists, ride in single file and use the facility if you are an experienced rider. New or slow riders must use the footpath and heed the sign asking riders to dismount. Patience and understanding must be exhibited by both groups. In life you will come across people who respect others, and those who think they are somehow more important than their peers. The merging rule is the etiquette equivalent of holding open a door so the person behind you doesn’t get a fly screen slammed in their face. It’s socially on par with adhering to the 12 items limit at the express queue instead of loading up the week’s groceries. And it’s having the same level of decency as those who give up their seat for an elderly person with a dodgy leg. Some of us have been brought up properly, and others are angry, selfentitled numb skulls destined to go through life ignorant and sad. A blight on humanity. There’s no point wasting energy feeling hostile against people who are lacking the basics. If letting them push in front prevents an accident, then try to stave off your anger and put more energy into people who deserve it. Alternatively buy a Dodge Ram and insist on your rightful position in the traffic queue. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Highway upgrades plus Myall Way intersection WITH completion of the upgrade to four lanes along the entire route of the Pacific Highway, construction of the Coffs Harbour bypass underway and planning in its final stage for the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace, it’s now time to begin planning the next phase of the Pacific Highway Upgrade program. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie has told Parliament that the next phase of investment must include overpasses and interchanges at critical intersections where there has been several fatal accidents and increased traffic flows in recent years. “Population growth along the Pacific Highway corridor, combined with increasing tourism traffic has made many of these major intersections busy at peak times, raising further safety concerns,” Dr Gillespie said. “In recent times, we have seen fatal

accidents at these busy intersections and it’s now time for them all to be upgraded.”

Dr Gillespie has called on the New South Wales Government to complete the planning process for the upgrade of major intersections.

The intersections Dr Gillespie says need to be included in the next phase of the Pacific Highway Upgrade Program include: an interchange for Medowie Road, Italia Road and Bucketts Way linking Newcastle Airport the Pacific Highway, western villages, Gloucester and the Barrington Tops with the

Pacific Highway, an interchange at Myall Way linking Tea Gardens & Hawks Nest with the Pacific Highway, an interchange at Failford Road linking Forster-Tuncurry with the Pacific Highway, an interchange at Harrington Road linking Coopernook and Harrington with the Pacific Highway, an interchange Houston Mitchell Drive at Lake Cathie-Bonny Hills with the Pacific Highway and an upgrade of the Oxley Highway interchange linking Wauchope and Port Macquarie with the Pacific Highway. “Most of the upgrade north of Port Macquarie has been done in recent years and includes interchanges and flyovers at the major intersections, however it is the areas further south where the initial upgrade began and the priority at the time was more about converting the highway from two to four lanes and onto dual carriageways,” Dr

Gillespie said. “All of these intersections are a priority and need to be upgraded sooner rather than later. “It is something we must put on the agenda now so that further investment can be made by the State and Federal Governments. “The community at all of these locations are seeking interchanges and overpasses at these intersections and I believe they deserve nothing less,” Dr Gillespie said. Dr Gillespie said he would be raising the need for a further phase of the Pacific Highway Upgrade Program directly with the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and the NSW Minister for Regional Roads and Transport.

Facebook made the decision to block news outlets and publications from its platform after the Australian Government made the decision to progress with their Media Bargaining Code. STUDENTS of the Bulahdelah Central School took to the pool recently to contest the Secondary Swimming Carnival at Bulahdelah Pool. Two hundred students and staff were greeted with a sunny day and a sparkling pool, making for ideal swimming conditions. Carnival Organiser Bob McCann said that students made the most of the opportunity. “All students got involved in the spirit of the day with lots of participation in the novelty events and the competitive racing. “House points were on offer for all races, as well as the continuous swim, belly flop and noodle race. “The ‘dolphin’ made
