Meeting Miss Honey SARAH Dryburgh and her family were only making a quick stop at their nonurban block in Pindimar when they encountered Miss Honey, the koala. Miss Honey was on the ground and being quite friendly to all that approached. After noticing the strange behaviour of the koala and having a chat with some neighbours, a decision was made to call Port Stephens Koalas who immediately informed Sarah and her family that this behaviour was abnormal and made their way to Pindimar to take Miss Honey to the vet. “My daughter was taking selfies with her and my partner was able to literally pat her. “Honey was only ten

Port Stephens Koalas said that it was very lucky that she was brought in, and that it’s fortunate that Honey didn’t give up the fight yet. Honey is currently receiving care in the isolation ward due to the contagious nature of the disease. Fortunately, other landowners in Pindimar had been looking out for Honey, ensuring that she had food and water and Honey even received her name due to one of the neighbour’s dogs.

ANYONE who has travelled to Tea Gardens is aware of the dangerous turnoff from Pacific Highway to Myall Way. For many years residents have been concerned over the accidents which have occurred on this intersection, and are now filing complaints due to overgrown grass impairing vision. Doug Taylor has only lived in Tea Gardens for two years but is well aware of the ongoing issues.

“In just two years there has been several deaths and accidents at this very intersection and I see many articles comes up on Facebook as suggestions on what to do, such as raise the sign, overhead interchange and the like,” Mr Taylor told News Of The Area “Numerous times now between RMS lawn mows I’ve noticed the grass and weeds growing to great heights which definitely does partially obscure vision, having said that, if everybody actually stopped and paused before they made the turn there would be no problem, but sadly that does not always happen.” Due to this, he took matters into his own hands and decided to inform someone

about this to prevent possible accidents or more loss of life. “I first contacted MidCoast Council who were very prompt in returning my call but informed me that this was out of their jurisdiction and to contact RMS. “I decided to go one step higher believing this was very important and visited Kate Washington’s office. “Her assistant noted all details and said he would contact the relevant people immediately to rectify the situation,” said Mr Taylor. The turnoff continues to be an ongoing issue and all travellers are urged to take extra caution before turning.

Scholarships help children impacted by domestic and family violence HELP is at hand for local children affected by domestic violence through Friends with Dignity’s Little Friends Scholarships, which opened on June 21. Young people aged between five and 18 can gain up to $500 to help them with their education or to participate in extra-curricular activities that they can’t pursue because of the financial impact of domestic and family violence. Program manager Jaqui Brosnan said the scholarships are another way that Friends with Dignity helps children affected by domestic and family violence to go on and live happy, healthy, and inclusive lives. “Sometimes kids need help with the basics of school fees, uniforms, a laptop, textbooks or school supplies – expenses which can all add up,” Ms Brosnan said. We also find that students can miss out on excursions or camps which are an important place for kids to maintain friendships and to learn new skills,” she said. “Our scholarships have also helped kids with the cost of participating in sport, music or the arts.” “One scholarship helped to buy a violin for a little girl. “Any time she heard music she was reduced to tears because her father had played loud music while being violent towards her mother. “She is now enjoying and playing music herself.” This is the ninth round of scholarships which are issued twice a year. To date, $194,775 has been given out to 394 young

people. Ms Brosnan said the scholarships are possible thanks to generous sponsors and donors. “We would welcome more scholarship supporters because applications always exceed the amount of funds available.” Applications close July 16 and the scholarships will be awarded from the end of July. Physical exertion and exercise is not only of benefit to your physical health but also your mental health; improving your mood and the parts of your brain responsible for learning and complex problem solving. As professionals we are no strangers to exercising our minds for our clients' benefit. However, the anecdotal evidence is that we pay little to no attention to exercising for the benefit of our minds. I encourage you to view Men's Health Week 2021 as an opportunity to turn your minds to your mental health and taking positive steps to improve your mental health by increasing your physical activity. PLASTIC Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution. Plastic Free July was started by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz (the founder of the Plastic Free Foundation) and a small team in local government in Western Australia. This grass roots movement is now one of the most influential environmental campaigns in the world. Millions of people across the globe take part every year, with many committing to reducing plastic pollution far beyond the month of July. Rebecca Prince-Ruiz co-authored the book Plastic Free with Port Stephens local Joanna Atherfold Finn. The book tells the stories of people around the world. Finn told News Of The Area, “In the book's final chapter we interviewed a range of people from different backgrounds and asked them what they wanted the future to look like. “A frequent comment was that individuals were doing what they could, but governments needed to be far more proactive. “It is now gratifying to see those changes happening, for example WA is fast-tracking its Plan for Plastics by four years. “NSW is aiming to cut single-use plastics by 2025. “It still feels like a long way off, but it is all a move in the right direction, and I really do believe that the constant push

from the ground up has let government bodies know that no one is okay with continuing to rely on a material that causes so much damage, when there are viable alternatives,” she said. The reality today is that plastic is all around us but we can stop single use

Find out more about how to get involved at plasticfreejuly.org. the efficacy of once yearly 1080 baiting on dingoes and its effects in mitigating predation and sublethal impacts on beef cattle. The results were collected over a period of 2.5 years and were undertaken during a period that is considered to have had relatively good rainfalls. This study was conducted in the southern Northern Territory. Surveys of the dingo abundance did decline immediately following a single baiting episode when compared to the non baited areas. However the long term impact is far less conclusive with no difference in the levels of calf damage or calf loss between poisonous and nonpoisonous areas a mere 8 months later. The study concluded that, “The results add to the growing body of consistent evidence that contemporary dingo control practices yield little benefit to rangeland beef producers most of the time.” The implications of this study are significant to dingo populations and to farmers when managing their properties with the study finding that, “Routine dingo baiting (as currently undertaken) may be largely unnecessary for beef cattle producers in arid and semiarid areas. “Alternative strategies and practices to reduce dingo mauling and predation impacts should be investigated using replicated and controlled field studies.”

Defamation Case Settled MIDCOAST Councillor Len Roberts has settled a defamation lawsuit with The Manning Community News and publisher Di Morrissey. The Defamation proceedings were commenced over a series of articles published in print and online during 2018- 2019. The terms of the settlement are confidential. Cr Len Roberts claimed in court documents that the series of articles were defamatory, and part of a broad scale attack on his professional reputation and Aboriginality.

They were published without contact with Cr Roberts beforehand. During the proceedings, the defendants made an application to summarily dismiss the case, which was unsuccessful. In December 2019, The Manning Community News published an ‘Apology to Len Roberts’ in respect to the articles, stating, “The Manning Community News accepts that these allegations were untrue and unreservedly withdraws them and apologises to Mr Roberts.” The matter did not proceed to trial

as it was eventually settled. Upon settlement of the proceedings, the following statement of the parties has been agreed for publication: “The plaintiff has resolved his defamation claim on satisfactory, but confidential terms. “The defendants acknowledge and regret any hurt that the plaintiff has suffered as a consequence of this matter.” Mayor of MidCoast Council, David West, commented that, “I was deeply saddened and concerned,

Greening initiatives feedback closing THE team at MidCoast Council is calling for the local community to have their say on a draft Greening Strategy and draft Vegetation Management Policy, before the end of the exhibition period on Thursday 24 June. The draft Greening Strategy aims to manage and enhance tree canopy cover and green spaces across the MidCoast region, recognising their importance in delivering the high levels of liveability and environmental amenity that our region is known for. It identifies five key areas or ‘principles’, and actions that can be undertaken such as initiatives to cool our urban areas, resources to assist in planting the right vegetation in the right places, and platforms for partnering and collaborating with local communities. “In simple terms, the strategy takes a highly targeted approach to retaining and planting trees now for our own enjoyment, and to create a positive legacy for future generations,” explained

Men’s Shed Grants Now Open AS part of Men’s Health Week, the Australian Government is encouraging Men’s Sheds across to apply for funding as part of the newest round of the National Men’s Shed Development Programme (NDSP). Federal member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie encouraged all Sheds across

the region to apply. “Men’s Sheds are friendly and inclusive settings where men can meet to work on a project shoulder to shoulder, or just spend time together, to support each other’s mental and physical wellbeing. “Our Government is committed to ensuring that

even during the pandemic, members can stay in touch and continue to be providing meaningful contributions to their communities.” Men’s Sheds can apply for financial support across the following funding categories: Category 1: Health, Wellbeing, and Events $8,000 maximum, Category 2:

Shed Improvements $8,000 maximum, Category 3: Equipment $5,000 maximum. Under the last round five Men’s Sheds across the Lyne electorate received grants, including $2,846 for the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Men’s Shed for Health, Wellbeing and Events. Minister for Health and

They then usually end up with either a little or substantial amount of cash after the sale of property. This is compounded by financial institutions who are reluctant to lend to single women in their 50s, 60s and 70s who aren’t working full time. “This obstacle is encountered for women without a rental history as well, they may have owned

the house for 40 odd years, finding affordable rental accommodation without a rental history, or a savings history can be difficult. “There are also those women for whom a medical emergency or unexpected health problem can materialise, leaving them out of the workplace for weeks or months on end, not accruing an income but still running up medical expenses which can quite quickly imperil a woman financially,” she said. Female Empty Nesters The New Homeless By Marian SAMPSON IT'S a sad state of affairs but women are now the fastest growing group of homeless people in Australia. It’s not teens, or youth that make up this group. The stark reality is that women aged 65-74 are now experiencing a growth in homelessness. Brooke Vitnell who has previously worked for The Federal Minister for Families and Social Services as a Senior Adviser and the Federal Minister for Employment and Minister for Women is seeing these women in her practice. Plans made for community hall upgrade By Alice HENNEN THANKS to a generous government grant, a community space will be getting a much needed upgrade. Hawks Nest Community Hall will be undergoing a major facelift, after receiving a $300,000 community development grant. Plans have been drawn up by MidCoast Council after consultation with the community and taking stakeholders’ feedback into consideration.

The plans are available online as a PowerPoint presentation, as well as digital copies of the concept design plan and engagement report from the first community consultation in August 2019. Participants rated technology and parking as being of high importance, and outward appearance of the community hall as being of least importance. Other infrastructure such as air conditioning and undercover walkways were also of concern. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the second phase of community consultations was held online in the form of a survey. “With the current restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic,

we have moved our second phase of this consultation online,” explained Council's Manager Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades, Dan Aldridge. “It’s important to us that the process for the upgrades to the Hawks Nest Community Hall continues so we can deliver these upgrades for the community.” Online submissions for the second phase of community consultation closed on Friday 12 June. The Hawks Nest Community Hall was officially opened on 5 December 1970, as a combined project of the then Stroud Shire Council, Hawks Nest Progress Association and the Hawks Nest Progress Association Ladies Auxilliary.

New Police recruits for the Hunter PORT Stephens-Hunter Police Districts will welcome five new probationary constables after they graduated at a ceremony at the Goulburn Police Academy last week. The new probationary constables have been assigned to police area commands and police districts across the state. Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott congratulated the new recruits who bring a fresh boost to the Force. “Congratulations to the men and women of class 347, who graduate today and will join the NSW Police Force at its strongest and most efficient,” Mr Elliott said. “After eight months of world-class training, the attesting officers will join their stations next Monday and invigorate the policing capabilities of this state.” The NSW Government has committed to invest $583 million to introduce 1500 extra police over four years to enhance community safety across NSW and is investing $60 million over four years to upgrade the Goulburn Police Academy. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin welcomed the recruits who will join the local Police Districts. “Our new police officers have chosen a career of service and will be a vital asset to the community,” Mr Martin said. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the new officers for their contribution and congratulate them on the start of their exciting careers.” Class 347 includes 137 men and 55 women. Some recruits entered the NSW Police Academy straight from school or university, while others left established professional careers and trades. The recruits have completed eight months of foundational training and those allocated to commands in the Hunter will report to their stations from today. The new probationary constables come from diverse backgrounds. Twenty-one recruits were born overseas in countries including Jamaica, the Philippines and China. Many are from non-English speaking backgrounds, with seven recruits fluent in a second language including Arabic, Chinese and German. Seven recruits are Indigenous with 1 recruit coming through the Indigenous Police Recruitment Our Way Delivery (IPROWD) program.

As Exchange of Contracts has taken place and the five business day cooling off period (if a residential property as rural has no cooling off period) has expired, the purchase is legally binding, so you’re close to being handed the keys. I expect you have taken property insurance to protect your new asset. Until now, your Agent has played a central role liaising with the seller’s legal representative, but now your Agent steps back, leaving both parties’ ‘legals’ to deal with each other and the banks. Usually there are six weeks between Exchange and Settlement during which you sort your finances, and the seller carries out any tasks stipulated in the Contact of Sale, such as repairs etc. A date and time for settlement is arranged and as it nears, your Legal will contact you to confirm you’ve completed your obligations. Your legal will organise for the transfer of final funds, discharge your previous mortgage, register the Title Deed and arrange for payment of Stamp Duty and after all this is completed, they’ll call with the great news – you are now the proud owner! Bridge Club Repay Clubhouse Loans

There seems to be a lot of variation in advice for this problem. I know of some parents who make their kids wash their clothes when they start high school, and others who are willing to accept baskets of dirty washing even after their children have flown the coop.

DEAR News Of The Area, WHAT was once a dream a decade ago has become a reality with an amazing achievement for the Hawks Nest Bridge Club, with all loans repaid. The journey towards Hawks Nest Bridge Club having its own clubhouse has involved a multitude of people and organisations. Such a number that it is impossible to mention them all by name. However, a permanent record of many who contributed can be found under the ‘Friends of HNBC’ tab on the Club’s website. Funding was attained through grants, a loan from the Australian Bridge Federation (ABF) and some members themselves through lots of dedication, generosity and hard work supporting the ‘market table’ loaded with fresh fruit, preserves, eggs and home baked cakes, trash and treasure stalls, raffles, donations etc, raised funds to repay all loans. Kate joined us for a wonderful meal on Sunday 6 June. She gave a speech congratulating not only the vision of the club but all those who had made the clubhouse possible. She expressed delight that the clubhouse is being shared with other ‘like minded’ community organisations. I'm a bit pedantic about washing and drying clothes because I like to match the pegs and hang the clothes depending on who owns them and then play the 'match the sock' game, which never ends well because of the sockeating washing machine. I have, however, stopped putting the washing away. Now I just place piles of clean clothes outside each person's bedroom where they invariably sit until desperation kicks in. I feel that this is going to be a short-term dilemma, because eventually they will all leave home, or, if they don't, I will leave home and join a commune where everyone wears easy-care clothing or maybe no clothing depending on where the commune is located. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I would simply implement a clothes-washing roster for your offspring, or else wait until they have their own children and then bask in the joy of their appreciation -- even if it is 20 years too late. MICHAEL Hohensee says it doesn’t matter where he is, he’s almost always on the lookout for possible subjects to photograph, which may have something to do with former stints as a photo-journalist. But he was having a day off from photography a few weeks ago when he strolled through the car park at Bennetts Beach in Booner Street, Hawks Nest to survey the bleak beachfront. Michael didn’t have a camera with him, but a few moments later he wished he had, because 50 metres away he stumbled across a landlocked surf boat parked close to the front of the new look Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club. “A club member later told me “that the boat came as a gift to the club from ‘The Block’ host Scott Cam. “It was originally entered in competition but is now used for training,” said Michael, a member of the Myall U3A Photographic Group. “But here were all the elements for a potential photograph.

“The boat was framed by the lookout tower to the right and a grey stretch of water and hills to the left, all topped by clouds and cloaked by a chilly wind. “Not surprisingly there were few people around on this wintery day, but fortunately there were some breaks in the clouds introducing some sunlight to play with. “I was also fortunate that I had my iPhone with me, so I put it to work.” While Michael would

Yalawanyi Ganya, ‘a sitting place’, is representative of the activities that occur there and the opportunities the building offers our community to connect, interact and participate. MidCoast Council worked with the Gathang language holders on the naming of the building to show our respect for our local Aboriginal community and make a tangible, visible commitment to reconciliation. Eager to offer support OVER the past few weeks members of the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Prostate Cancer Support Group have been stepping up their efforts to encourage men over 40 to join them at their monthly meetings. “Prostate related issues are discussed discreetly at our friendly meetings,” said Group convener Philip Dowling. “There’s no pressure and no fees, and visitors can choose to participate or just listen.” The Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest group, all volunteers, meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 2pm at Benchmark on Booner (street) in Hawks Nest, opposite Reflections Holiday Park. Over a coffee, beer or wine, the group exchange views and news on a variety of issues relating to prostate cancer. THE community of Stroud has welcomed a social Badminton Club which started operating around two months ago. Badminton is a fun racquet sport that can be played indoors or outdoors and it is far from a game of hit and giggle with badminton featuring as an Olympic Sport. Badminton is played with racquets and a shuttle over the best of three games, first to 21 for each game. Much like tennis points are scored, with serves, faults and volleys all a part of the game.

Melissa Manktelow is one of the group's founders, and told News Of The Area, “We currently have 18 members, ages ranging from 6 years old to over 60. “We welcome beginners through to seasoned professionals.” The group plays every Monday night at 6.30pm at the Stroud School of Arts Hall. “My brother, my sister and I used to play both competitively and socially in Tasmania from the age of 10. “When we settled in Newcastle we were actively

looking for places to play, we discovered Hunter Badminton at Wickham and a small social group at Whitebridge, however when we moved out to Clarencetown and Stroud areas we couldn't find a local club so with the help of Hunter Badminton Association we started our own social club in Stroud,” she said. Badminton is a fun sport to play at any age and the group is looking forward to building a great social club for Stroud and surrounding areas. Pindimar Abalone Farm As I write this, I have received notification that Austasia Leefield (the Applicant) has withdrawn its state significant development application for the proposed Pindimar Abalone Farm Project. The meeting scheduled with the Independent Planning Commission at 1:30pm on Tuesday 22 June 2021 was cancelled.

Sheril Johnson (swinger lead), Jan Coomer, Irene Roberts and Karen McPhie led all the way and won v Sheril, Ingrid Luck, Karen Green and Maynie Roberts, 17 v 13. SATURDAY was a very emotional and tough game for the Karuah Roos, with the recent sad loss of their brother, team mate, son, father, fiancé and all round very special one of a kind bloke Ben Langdon. The Club would like to thank the Hinton Hornets for

their kind words and minute of silence before the game. The Roos Captain Mitch O'Bryan scored first to take the score to 4-0. The Roos defence was on fire, keeping the Hornets out until just before the end of the first half before the Hornets scored two tries to rake the score to 12-4 at half time. Karuah's Ben Feeney

scored in under five minutes into the second half to take the score to Roos 8 - Hornets 12. Then Adam Crampton scored for the Roos with Sam Croese converting to put the Roos back in front 14-12.
