Mr Drain met his wife, Natsumi, in 2003,

and together they have continued to invest their time and savings into developing a lodge on the premises – Bachelor Forest Lodge – a respite created for both abled and non-abled bodied people to enjoy the land as Mr Drain has. “We’ve spent 17 years together working on the lodge every time we had a spare cent,” he said. “We’re hoping to offer respite stays,

day groups, camping and even kayaking for people with disabilities.” “We’ll also have gardening with purposebuilt raised garden beds, timber and Japanese cooking classes, music therapy, indigenous cultural education, health and wellbeing discussions, and bushwalking through the more than five kilometres of tracks with access to the outback electric scooter for mobility-impaired visitors.” The Bachelor Forest Lodge will offer two rooms for respite stays and three glamping tents with wheelchair access, as well as two

THE Lions Club is well and truly back with around 25 members now attending the monthly business meetings held at the Hawks Nest Golf Club on the second Tuesday each and every month from 6.30pm. Fundraising activities continue, catching up after a challenging year, with the club now a NSW Government approved COVID safe business. This month the Club donated $500 to the local free Clinic Bus, a vital service for locals needing access to medical services and more funds are needed. Locals can support fundraising by buying their delicious Christmas Cakes now on sale at the Grange, Hugo’s Newsagency in Hawks Nest, Woody’s Garden Centre, or contact Leone on 0423 691 488 (EFTPOS available). It helps to have a Will if you have had more than one relationship because otherwise the Court might have to decide how to distribute your assets. A man died unexpectedly at the age of 55 years with net assets of about $3.5m and no Will was found. A dispute arose as to who was entitled to his estate. He died still married but he had separated from his wife of 27 years and he had entered into a new relationship which he successfully kept secret from his wife and his children for about 7 years before he died. Because he died with a wife and a de facto spouse and without a Will the law says in the absence of agreement, the assets have to be divided “justly and equitably” between the

The Judge listed a series of relevant criteria he needed to address when considering this question such as the size of the estate, the contributions made by each woman, their ages and health and financial resources and any prior agreement made between the deceased and his wife. In this case, the de facto spouse was awarded a house without a mortgage and a lump sum of $500,000 which would see her have a roof over her head and about $250,000 in savings (just under a third of the estate). See Bailey v Palombo [2020] NSWSC 1209. Liability limited by a scheme approved under Professional Standards Legislation

THIS week is National Water Week organised by the Australian Water Association to inspire people, communities and organisations to build awareness around the value of water and waterways. In support, the MidCoast Council is releasing their annual Waterways and Catchment Report Card. It will assess the current ecological health and the progress of management actions across the area’s waterways, including the Wallis and Myall Lakes, and the Manning and Karuah River Estuaries. Committed volunteers, such as the Myall Lakes Aquatic Club, also contribute to maintaining the waterways. Members recently installed new and safe decking at Engels Wharf, taking a full weekend to complete the job, with materials provided by National Parks and Wildlife. Alongside the beaches, the fantastic volunteers who make up the local Bitou Busters have been clearing weeds from the sand dunes each month, and are having a well-deserved end of season BBQ on Saturday 24 October. Other dates to note: ● 1st Bulahdelah Scouts Group is planning a mega garage sale on Saturday 28 November, with donations in advance welcome at 56 Stroud Street, Bulahdelah. ● St John’s Op Shop at Stroud is open every Friday from 9am with lots of bargains available. ● NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service advises that Broughton Island campground

2021. On waste, sadly dumping continues to be an issue for the Lions Club Lookout and a number of local parks, all of which have had increased visitors this spring. The Council will continue to support a CCTV program to identify and prosecute illegal dumpers. Apprenticeships For Youth By Marian SAMPSON APPRENTICESHIPS are definitely a way forward for the youth of Port Stephens and the Myall Coast. COVID-19 has decimated the opportunities available for young people and the Federal Budget has recognised the important role apprenticeships will play in securing the future for young people. Past recessions have shown that only when young people are engaged in employment can long term reliance on welfare be avoided. Local Mackenzie Goring is about to embark on her HSC exams and is proud to say that she has secured an apprenticeship in hairdressing. Mackenzie Goring told News Of The Area, “I will be starting at Meraki Hair Society, at Anna Bay.” Mackenzie engaged in a trial at the salon and “really loved it.” “I have always wanted to work in hair and beauty,” she said. She is looking forward to joining the team and starting her career. Catherine Cusack, Member of the Legislative Council, told News Of The Area, “There has been a real focus on apprenticeships for young people, I think it is safe to say it is almost the number one priority of every level of government, to get our economy back up working again. “We are working to try to make up for lost opportunities of the last 6-12 months, because we know that if a generation of young people miss out on a year or two years unemployed it becomes almost impossible for them and they become overwhelmed and they are looking at a lifetime of joblessness and hopelessness,” she said. Catherine also recognised the difficult time faced by women in the job market due to the pandemic. She believes we have good evidence from the Global Financial Crisis on what needs to be done to support young people to achieve good outcomes and apprenticeships are one positive way in which the government is supporting our youth. The Federal Budget is supporting businesses to employ apprentices with employers targeted with incentives to employ young people to grow their skilled workforce. She believes that assisting business to get back on its feet will help individuals and our youth find employment. Catherine is also keen to see training in place for industries that need quality staff such as aged care.

SCOPING OUT YOUR MOVE “We live in Sydney but on a recent trip to Port Stephens, I caught your column. A question: we think we’d like to make the move up here, but not sure whether to buy outright, or rent first. Each has pros and cons. Your thoughts?”

THANKS for reading my column! My advice is based on professional experience and personal attachment to our gorgeous region. You say “you think” you’d like to move here, so that suggests you’re not yet 100% committed. Buying first off saves you the rental outgoings, but if it doesn’t work for you, then you’ve probably cost yourselves far more. I’d suggest a period renting in an area you feel is a place you could call home. It may be lifestyle, work, school-related, or it could be the landscape – coast or country that attracts you. You don’t say whether our new ‘working remotely’ world is a driving factor, but if you can work remotely, your options are greater. If there are low rental vacancy rates in your chosen spot, look to a neighbouring area and scope your preferred spot in your free time. Check out the landscape, facilities, services and property listings. Either way, don’t rush. Take your time. Ah, vaping. What happened to the good old days when you'd roll gum leaves, mixed herbs and a hint of cinnamon into a strip of newspaper and smoke it under the house, somehow managing to survive and not burn the place down. Vaping seems so .... I don't know .... so vacuous, so plastic, so 2020. It is like a symbol for all that's wrong with the world. Sucking on something that looks like a USB stick to inhale nicotine, diacetyl, volatile compounds and heavy metals, but thinking it's okay because you can blow cute little mango-scented smoke rings is misguided. And that's the problem. It's the perfect metaphor really. But let's turn to the HSC. There's no denying it is a pressure cooker of Orwellian quotes, unrequited love, Shakespearean angst, sophisticated uses of language and dramatic monologues to name a few. And that's just the bus ride to the English exam. I think everyone over a certain age can unequivocally state that once the HSC exams are over, they fade into insignificance. Life isn't about rote learning literary techniques so you can prove your worth in a 45-minute time slot. No, instead it is a series of life lessons: how to turn two-minute noodles into Pad Thai, how to remove the dribbling man dressed in a kaftan off the red velvet lounge in your share accommodation. How to mow the lawn with nothing but a pair of pinking shears. How to camouflage cigarette burns in the carpet on rental inspection day with nothing more than some Clairol hair dye, a glue stick and a Wettex. This is when real-life skills come into play - resilience, creativity, tenacity and well there you have it, at least with the cigarette burn example, a flimsy but nonetheless feasible argument for vapes. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Making plans? Remember, COVID doesn’t take a day off. Enjoy all that NSW has to offer, but please do it in a COVID safe way by remembering to: > Stay 1.5m apart, even with friends and extended family. > Wash your hands regularly. > If unwell, stay at home and get tested immediately. > Wear a mask when you can’t distance and on public transport. > Book in advance and keep to group limits. > Check-in at cafes and venues, so you can be contacted quickly, if necessary.

asked what is the best fish or shellfish for dishes or how people should prepare them for dishes,” said Lynda. “We’ve got so many species of seafood on offer that people simply have no idea how to cook with. “I thought what better way to showcase all the wonderful produce we have on offer than getting those that work in the industry in our community to showcase stories and recipes!” The book has the support of professional chefs and fishermen of the Port Stephens region including local author, angler, and media identity John ‘Stinker’ Clarke. Stinker wants to see more people sustainably using underutilised fish species that turn out great on the plate with a few fine touches. “How things have changed with more inventive and adventurous seafood chefs using different methods and presentations of product to tempt an eager and increasingly appreciative public,” said Stinker. “It has finally been realised that there is very little from the sea that cannot be prepared for the table. “Lynda is aware that, more so with seafood, presentation and preparation is vital to the experience.” Lynda wants to ensure that the whole community can contribute to the publication and is urging Port Stephens’ residents to get behind it and share their recipes, artworks, photos and stories of the sea. Bushfire survival plans Midcoast Council is encouraging all MidCoast residents to take the five simple steps to prepare for bushfires this year, with a bushfire survival plan arriving in every MidCoast mailbox this week.

MIDCOAST Council is encouraging all MidCoast residents to take the five simple steps to prepare for bushfires this year, with a bushfire survival plan arriving in every MidCoast mailbox this week. A five week campaign is underway to guide you through the five steps to Get Ready, focussing this week on step 4 – be aware of bushfire alerts around you, especially during the fire danger season. “The first way to keep updated is to watch for the NSW RFS Fire Danger Ratings, which are issued daily and are specific for your area. Roadside Fire Danger ratings signs are located throughout the MidCoast, or you can check the fire information each day at www.rfs.nsw.gov. au,” said MidCoast Council Mayor David West. “As the fire danger ratings increase, you should be following your bushfire safety plan. At severe and extreme ratings, the safest option is to leave early – don’t wait to see what happens. “At a catastrophic fire danger rating, your only option is to leave early. No homes are built to withstand fires in catastrophic conditions and it is not safe to stay and defend your home.” During a bushfire, the RFS will issue alerts, which give you an indication of the level of threat from a fire. The Advice alert means a fire has started, and there is no immediate danger. You should stay up to date in case the situation changes.

The Watch and Act alert means there is a heightened level of threat and conditions are changing. You need to start enacting your bushfire survival plan. The Emergency Warning alert is the highest level of bushfire alert. You may be in danger and need to take action now. “The RFS says you should not wait for an alert – some fires start and spread so quickly there may not be any time for a warning. Remember, leaving early is the safest option for your survival,” said Mayor West. “Downloading the fires near me app to your phone is one of the best ways to make sure you know when a fire starts; you can set to be alerted when a fire starts near you.” Otherwise, stay aware at the RFS website, via the RFS information phone line 1800 679 737 or via the NSW RFS social media sites. During a fire emergency, you should tune into the emergency radio broadcaster, ABC 95.5FM. Mayor West said that every home on the MidCoast region will soon receive a Get Ready MidCoast bushfire survival plan in the mail. “We want every home on the MidCoast to have a bushfire survival plan this year, so make sure you, your family and your neighbours Get Ready following the steps on your household copy of the Get Ready plan, our website at midcoast.nsw.gov.au/getready and the NSW RFS recommendations.”

THE first stage in developing a Biodiversity Framework for the MidCoast region is currently underway, inviting feedback from the local community and key stakeholders through an online survey. Everyone has a role to play in protecting the precious plants, animals and natural environment our region is wellknown for. Right now, the team at MidCoast Council is preparing a road map to assist the local community, other government agencies and landholders in partnering with Council to ensure biodiversity is conserved and managed for future generations. “Biodiversity benefits us all, not only in environmental terms but in supporting

our well-being, our place, our lifestyle, and the region’s economy,” said Mathew Bell, MidCoast Council’s Senior Ecologist. “Preparing a framework now for how we will manage, conserve, and restore biodiversity across the MidCoast is vital to the sustainability of our region into the future.” The Biodiversity Framework (2020 – 2030) will provide a blueprint for a suite of plans, principles, policies, actions and management tools. Using an adaptive management approach, the framework will provide flexibility to respond to changing environmental pressures and community needs. “Habitat loss, fragmentation, invasive plants and animals, and the impacts of

climate change are just some of the pressures on biodiversity in our region,” Mathew added. “We have a collective responsibility to review what we are doing now, and to manage biodiversity more effectively in the future”. In a second stage the draft Framework will be placed on exhibition, before being put forward to Councillors for adoption next year. The Biodiversity Framework forms part of Council’s commitment to delivering on the

core values identified by the local community in the Community Strategic Plan, MidCoast 2030: Shared Vision, Shared Responsibility. Swimmers focus on stroke correction and fine tuning their technique with individual coaching provided. Wednesday morning (8.30am to 9.30am) is the sprint session, which caters for members seeking to improve their strength and times. Friday afternoon

(5.00pm to 6.00pm session) is an aerobic workout concentrating on improving distance. As the season progresses, we look forward to catching up with more of our members. BULAHDELAH Bullets Soccer Club’s inaugural Twilight Junior Summer 5s/6s competition will kick off later this month, with soccer-mad youngsters brimming with excitement for a return to the pitch. The new competition comes after the regular outdoor season for juniors was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. In what has been a tough year for the club, it is hoped the small sided competition will be a fun replacement for the local juniors. “We thought of having a 6 a side competition for our junior club, and we are

hopeful it will be the basis for an ongoing and regular thing each year,” said club member Rhys. “The kids usually go watch the seniors, and some of the juniors started asking about their own competition.” The club is about to have the lights upgraded at their ground, allowing them to run both senior and junior competitions on the same night. “In the past we didn’t have the facilities to have both the juniors and the seniors playing at night. “Now we will be able to have the seniors run a little bit later,” Rhys said. The new junior competition is set to kick off

on Thursday 29 October. Rhys said the club is always looking for volunteers, especially with the added pressures of COVID-19 restrictions. “Volunteers are the heart and soul of the club every year. “We are always welcoming volunteers. It always helps to have people pop in, help out and move a goalpost or two. “If people are interested, they can talk to one of the committee members or jump onto our Facebook page.” Keen juniors can still register for the competition, by following the links on the Bulahdelah Bullets Soccer Club Facebook page.

By Chris Dunning (and Sandra Murray) MYALL Masters Swimming Club has commenced for the season with a focus on “fun, fitness and friendship”. Monday 12 October 2020 was an excellent start to the season with enthusiastic attendees who enjoyed great weather and a comfortable water temperature. Twenty-seven swimmers took to the Tea Gardens pool over two consecutive sessions to ensure compliance with COVID 19 safety regulations and MidCoast Council requirements. A good time was had by all. This year the club has a team of six experienced volunteer coaches to assist and encourage all members of various abilities in all strokes. Monday afternoon is
