For many years Keira has sprinted her way to victory, receiving a number of awards including a recent silver medal at the NSW All Schools State Athletics Championship, however, this might be the last time that locals see Keira for a while. After hearing about the school from one of the girls Keira used to train with, her family began looking into it and it wasn’t long until she earned a place at St

Keira spoke to News Of The Area about the change. “It’s certainly been a big change,” Keira said. “Usually in the mornings in Hawks Nest my mum and I would go for a walk up to the beach but this morning we went for a walk along the riverside and it’s strange because there’s so many cars and people.” “It’s all very different,” she said. Although she’s a long way from home, Keira still has her eye on the prize with the goal of making it into the World Juniors, an event for athletes under twenty. “The qualifying time is 11.8 seconds, and although I’m still young and have time to work on it, I did 12.1 seconds last year,” Keira told News Of The Area. “I’m only 0.3 seconds off that and I’m hoping this year to get under 12 seconds to be close to that mark,” she said. Balancing school and a lot of training, Keira is busily scheduling her way to success. Although she’s only just moved, Keira is just about to take on her first athletics competition in the Queensland capital and Keira can be guaranteed that all of Hawks Nest will be cheering her on for this season of sprinting. Congratulations on your achievement Keira, we can’t wait to see you as one of Australia’s best athletes in the near future.

Alarmingly, only 3.2 per cent of those in need are receiving the long-term housing solutions they need. Equity Economics estimates that the lack of long term social housing is leading to 7,690 women a year returning to violent partners and 9,120 women a year becoming homeless. The figures are alarming: 1 in 6 women have experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or previous partner since the age of 15; 1 in 16 men have experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or previous partner since the age of 15; a woman was murdered every 10 days by an intimate partner in 2018-19; family and domestic violence costs $22 billion per year; and in 2019-20, across Australia, there were 112,509 family and domestic violence related incidents recorded by police, however due to underreporting, it is estimated that this only represents 40 per cent of actual crime levels. The report commissioned by Everybody’s Home found family and domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children.

THE ongoing debate over North Arm Cove’s Non-Urban land zoning continues, with the North Arm Cove Rate Payers Association (NACRPA) proposing sustainable housing opportunities and development ideas. Many lots in North Arm Cove are zoned as non-urban land, and therefore are unable to be developed on. Non-urban land is defined as ‘Land containing lots that only have recognition on paper and, in most cases, have no formed roads, drainage, reticulated water, sewer or electricity’. NACRPA have proposed various forms of use that are believed to align with the MidCoast Council’s policies, however the possibility for

development on these lots is not guaranteed. The group believes that North Arm Cove could be the key to the housing crisis in the Myall Coast and Port Stephens area. “Regional areas are booming, and will most likely stay that way in the foreseeable future, as COVID-19 has brought forward an exodus of people from the main cities, due to the new flexible working conditions,” David Buxton, a member of NACRPA said. “Lack of places to live and rent are now commonplace across the eastern seaboard,” Mr Buxton said. The group believes that MidCoast Council has turned a blind eye to “one of the greatest opportunities being handed to them”. MidCoast Council are currently preparing The Draft Rural Strategy and Paper

The basic applicable principles are that: (a) There are two kinds of liens – possessory and equitable: (i) Possessory allows a solicitor to retain the property of the client (their file) until a bill is paid; (ii) Equitable allows a solicitor to claim an entitlement to monies payable to the client if a bill is still unpaid. Hunter New England Local Health District has welcomed the appointment of Dr Martin Cohen as Chair of the District’s Board, by Minister for Health and Medical Research, Brad Hazzard. Learn to write for the NOTA TELLING the incredible stories of the Myall Coast is what News Of The Area (NOTA) is all about. The NOTA has been a staple of the region for decades, keeping locals up to date with the happenings of the area. Now, NOTA is seeking enthusiastic locals with a background in writing to join the team. “If you have a background in writing, and a passion for your local community, I would love to hear from you,” said NOTA Editor Douglas Connor. Aware that a shift to news writing may be a daunting prospect for locals with a passion for the written word, Mr Connor is seeking expressions of interest for news writing workshops, hosted by the NOTA in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area. The small-group, intimate workshops would cover all aspects of covering local news on the Myall Coast; from headline writing, writing to news style, grammar, interview skills and more. These free sessions will give any keen writer the necessary skills to start covering the issues that matter to local people. Writing for NOTA can be an amazing way to connect with your local community, to meet some of the awe-inspiring locals creating change in the area, and to learn and experience the unique elements of life on the Myall Coast. Veteran NOTA reporter Marian Sampson, who has reported on local issues on the Myall Coast and Port Stephens for four years, said the role allowed her freedom, and new opportunities. “Writing for News Of The Area has been a wonderful opportunity for me. “I have become further connected to my community and importantly those who care passionately about their causes. “I have had the privilege to meet some amazing people who are doing amazing things locally and internationally. “From people like Wendy Stein who is changing the landscape of women's health in PNG to November Sheehan who is bringing joy to older people in care across Australia simply through a simple card, to meeting the Prime Minister and getting to throw him a question (you have to be quick!) I get to meet so many people who passionately advocate for our community. “I am valued and respected by my community as is the publication. “As a NOTA reporter I write when I like and choose the stories that are of interest to me and my community. I choose my own hours and I can work from anywhere,” Marian said. PORT Stephens Council elections are looming and there are plenty of people interested in who is running and what they will do for the community. The residents of Karuah have always been on the edge of the Port Stephens LGA, and now they are seeing their town move from West Ward to Central Ward for the elections. MIDCOAST Council is calling on artists to submit expressions of interest to develop one or more artworks that will contribute to an exciting new project: the Barrington Coast Art Trail - The Tanks. Proudly supported by the NSW Government through the Regional Tourism Bushfire Recovery Grants, the project will deliver silo art installations, at the Argyle Street Barrington water reservoir and at two reservoirs at Tea Gardens on Viney Creek Road. “While we have identified several water reservoirs across the MidCoast which could be potential artwork sites, these two have been selected to kick off the Art Trail project because of their location and connectivity to a self-drive tour of public sculpture, murals and artist studios around the region,” said Council’s Manager of Growth, Economic Development and Tourism, Deb Tuckerman. “We’re asking artists to creatively interpret the history of these locations, tell community stories or to respond to the local flora and fauna in a creative and inspiring way.” “We recognise the traditional custodians of the land which makes up the MidCoast area – the Gathang speaking (Biripi and Worimi) people. “We enjoy a strong relationship with First Nations people, and we encourage local Aboriginal artists to apply. “These vibrant communities contribute extensively to the culture and society of our

COVID-19 Delta Hits Hard In Regions By Marian SAMPSON

COVID-19 has changed the face of the region as Sydney and Victoria battle the deadly Delta strain. Here, little has changed but it could be only a matter of time. As seen in Victoria the regions are vulnerable with Melbourne’s cases now exposing Mildura and nearby us a 7-eleven in Thornton has been an exposure site, which for many is just too close to home. Dr David Durrheim, Hunter New England Public Health Controller, COVID-19 Response said, “We would like to advise the community that the 7-Eleven at 1 Weakleys Drive, Thornton has been identified as a low risk exposure site. “Anyone who attended the 7-Eleven between 12.05pm and 12.11pm on Tuesday 13 July is a casual contact who must immediately get tested and self-isolate until a negative result is received. “The risk to the broader community from this exposure is very low. “CCTV indicates that masks were worn at all times and there was good social distancing. “It is important that we all remain vigilant and comply with current restrictions. “Anyone who has experienced fever or the recent onset of respiratory symptoms, including a cough, runny nose, shortness of breath, sore throat, or loss of taste and smell, should seek testing immediately and isolate until a negative result is returned,” he said. Yet, still there are many who are not convinced about vaccination or lockdowns, as witnessed when a man was found asleep in the back of his vehicle at Hawks Nest, having travelled from Sydney’s Turramurra against the public health orders to reportedly get some “peace and quiet”. The man was issued with a $1,000 PIN before being told to return home. Sydney is now looking down the barrel of weeks of a hard lockdown and for local businesses this means loss of trade. The Sydney shutdown has hit tourism, restaurants and retail hard in Port Stephens with a severe drop in trade which has been reflected in reduced hours for many workers. However there is a lifeline which is coming for business and for workers. While not as simple for workers it is similar to Jobkeeper with workers who lose more than 20 hours entitled to a payment of $600 per week and for those that lose between 8-20 hours a payment of $375. Businesses are now able to access grants to help keep them afloat across the entire state as the impact of the Sydney lockdown has hit the regions hard. But it is not all bad news for locals. If you have been waiting for the chance to get a booking at a local restaurant, now is the time to jump online and take advantage of the dip in visitation and to enjoy some of the best that is available in the region. Premier Gladys Berejiklian has thanked NSW residents for their patience. “we won't see the effects of these harsher restrictions for at least 5 or 6 days because there is a lag in the data.” She spoke of the importance of surveillance testing particularly for those working in health or aged care. Deputy Premier John Barilaro said, “Regional rural NSW where the health system would be completely swamped if we had an outbreak that was similar to Sydney. “That is why the restrictions we have in Sydney are significant to minimise travel to the regions,” he said. The current restrictions which apply to regional NSW are; face masks must be worn

Turn in your guns By Alice HENNEN

LAY down your guns, don’t be so reckless. New South Wales residents are urged to turn in any unregistered or unwanted guns and ammunition to their nearest police station or arms dealer, as part of an ongoing firearms amnesty, which commenced on 1 July. The amnesty protects those who turn in unregistered weapons from prosecution. No penalty is incurred for turning in an unregistered firearm. Old weapons which no longer work, gel blasters, crossbows and other illegal or unwanted weapons and

accessories can also be handed in as part of the amnesty. Before taking the gun to the dealer or police station, the gun must be unloaded and the bolt removed, if possible, to render it safe for handling. The firearm can then be placed into a gun bag or wrapped in a blanket or towel for transportation. Any ammunition to be surrendered must be stored separately to the firearm, but can be transported at the same time. Guns, ammunition, accessories and other weapons can be turned in at Bulahdelah Police Station, 12 Meade Street Bulahdelah. Minister for Police and

Emergency Services David Elliott said the introduction of a permanent national amnesty sends a clear message that community safety is paramount. “This new permanent amnesty will allow community members to surrender for destruction unwanted or unregistered firearms and ammunition cost free,” said Mr Elliott. Assistant Commissioner Scott Cook, the Police Prosecutions and Licensing Enforcement Commander, is encouraging gun owners to surrender or register their firearms. “We encourage NSW residents to take advantage of the amnesty to surrender

their firearms, gun parts and ammunition, without fear of being penalised for illegal possession.” “Our focus, as always, is

public safety. “We want to reduce the number of illegal firearms in the community, so they don’t fall into the hands

“For those impacted by dementia, there will be an added layer of anxiety,” Mr Boffa said. “With recent data suggesting that just over two thirds of all people living in residential aged care have moderate to severe cognitive impairment, this must be adequately addressed. "It is vital that people who provide essential care to loved ones with dementia are not excluded from giving care at this time.

Karuah Bowling Club THE bowling years come and go and while 2020 and 2021 were stellar years for “news’, they were relatively quiet on the Bowling front. That said, the 2021 AGM for the Karuah Bowling Club has seen a completely new committee take on the job and they have high hopes for the coming year. New President Jim Healey said, “they had intended to breathe new life into the competitions they run and offer new challenges to their long term as well as new bowlers they hope to attract.” Off and running with their first monthly meeting last week they invited Craig Donaldson, the Bowls NSW Rep and Ross Parr the CEO of the Karuah RSL as their

guests. Support, ideas and liaison was offered to the bowlers by both. Stephen Gilchrist, the newly elected Games Secretary said, “Exciting new Gala formats are on the cards for all levels of bowlers, from beginners and juniors through to experienced bowlers.” Getting the year off to a flying start, Stephen Gilchrist played in the final of the premier major singles championship against club stalwart Tom Mulley this last Saturday to decide the best male singles player in the club. The game was played in extremely windy conditions and after a classic tussle, Tom

Mulley came out the victor. After the game Mr Mulley spoke “with the 200 kilometer per hour winds, the bowls were almost delivering themselves and Gillie and myself were kept busy avoiding the pelicans who also were being carried past at 200 KPH in the wind”. “It was a great game and I thoroughly enjoyed Stephen's company and his great competitive bowling during the game,” Mr Mulley said. What is your philosophy on pets at the table during mealtimes?

WHAT’S WITH THE NEW PRICE RANGE ON PROPERTIES FOR SALE? I’VE had a lot of buyers confused over this new pricing technique of late, not being sure what price they are meant to offer, or how to go about it. This new system replaces the old “offers over” pricing. You will find agents are using the price range lately and this is due to “Offers Over” not being allowed to be used on residential property anymore. The pricing range must not have more than a 10% difference ie $300,000 - $330,000. Agents are indicating to the buyer that their seller is seeking a price within this range. Once you have inspected the property, and you decide you would like to buy it, you are invited to make an offer using the 10% range as a guide. To give yourself the best chance of securing the property, of course it is always going to be the best idea to offer at the higher end of the guide, but only if you see value there and you can afford it. This is a broad question. There's a big difference between a Labrador sitting patiently waiting for a bit of pork gristle and a Poodle yelping underfoot and making everyone agitated. It really depends on how wellbehaved the pet is. My own dog has better table manners than some of my family members. She doesn’t leave food on her plate, she doesn’t text at the table or argue about cleaning up after the meal, and she certainly doesn’t complain that we are eating chicken two nights in a row. Instead, she sits quietly, usually at the feet of the weakest link, and receives furtive treats. It’s lovely that you eat together as a family at the table instead of balancing your meals on your lap in front of the tele, so I’d suggest that your degustation manners are in fact superior to many others, with or without your furry companion. Colin's topic was his colourful trip around Switzerland. In pre-covid times, Colin and his wife Trish were visiting the UK when they noticed an advertisement for a “Glacier Express Tour” through Switzerland which was too good to miss. Their experience included being onboard

while the train was held up by an avalanche which had to be cleared before the train could move on. At a previous presentation, Colin, a construction engineer, spoke about his work on the design of the Murray 2 and Tumut Power Stations. In addition, Colin and his wife Trish undertook courses so they could understand the history and ecology of the Cooma/Tumut area because they both worked for the project in various capacities. So, it was only natural that during their Swiss Rail Journey, they took a great interest

in the design of the Swiss Rail gauge system which Colin explained in detail at the recent presentation. He explained that where other countries constructed roads to join settlements, the Swiss built railways. My Road Info to transition to Live Traffic MY Road Info (MRI) is the platform used by most councils in north-eastern NSW for road information. It allows users access to information

about current and planned works as well as known hazards and emergency information. The platform was developed by Lismore City Council and has been in use for almost 10 years. Live Traffic has been automatically pulling information from MRI during the most recent events and it has capacity to deal with considerably larger volumes of enquiries. We will be working with the other participating councils to implement the transition. You can access Live Traffic now, go to https://www.livetraffic.com. The site will show what hazards exist, works being undertaken and planned works. It’s great if you are planning a road trip or just want to know what is happening in your area. Over the next three ends they scored ten shots reducing their deficit to just five points, 15 v 10. The K’s won five out of the next eight ends ultimately winning 25 v 14.

As they gather information, ideas and support it is important to note that this is separate to the planned all accessibility work into the pool complex, including the change rooms, which is currently underway and hopefully finished by the pool opening in Spring. This work, stage 1, is being financed through a grant made available to Council through our Federal Member Dr David Gillespie. The work had received support from the community pre-Covid. This is indeed good news, however, as my friend Jeanette has been constantly saying, “It’s no good having a pool if you cannot access it.” We need to have stage 2 funded, which is all accessibility into the pool itself. To that end, I have submitted a motion to Council calling on Council to advocate for our community for the funding to finish the job. It is possible to do stage 1 and 2 together.

I will also be asking Dr Gillespie to do what he can as well. To have this work completed will be a good foundation upon which the progress subgroup can build their future plans. Great Lakes Aquatic Trail This is a proposed trail journey between Pacific Palms and Tea Gardens that covers a unique combination of coastal walking and estuary kayaking and is designed to attract people to enjoy this outstanding region. Unfortunately, New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) does not support the project. Just as NPWS does not support the opening of Mungo Brush Road to Seal Rocks. NPWS is not maintaining existing tracks and appears to want to lock-up parks to the public. Council agreed to contact all state members to intervene and have the project supported.

Only one end left to bowl, the spectators were sitting on

the edge of their seats, Sheila sent down a magnificent bowl that moved the Jack to the T and her bowl stayed with it, making things very difficult for their opponents. The winners by two shots were Sheila and Irene 17 v 15. Great bowling by all competitors in this Competition, thanks to Kathie Rimmer and Karen Green for Umpiring. Karuah Roos and Rooettes THIS weekend saw both teams have their games relocated to Coronation Oval at Telarah due to fields being still too wet to play on. The Roos were against Paterson on a freezing cold Saturday. With the River scoring two quick converted tries within the five minutes to open the score at 12/0. Then about halfway through the first the Roos Adam Crampton was in 12/4. Paterson scored again with under five to go in the first half to take the half time score to River 18 Roos 4. Second half saw Roos Ben Feeney over in the first ten minutes with Aiden Bills converting to take the score to 18/10 Rivers way. Paterson were next to score 22/10. 14 JULY It was lovely weather for a game of bowls with 48 players competing in the popular Triples competition at the Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club. The winners on 20 points with a 2-end countback were Len Baker, Peter Cheney and Daryl Martin. The lucky losers on 16 points were Graham Uff, Tom Short and Daryl Martin. The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Ron Green. Our thanks to the Garden Eatery for their support. A new member, Rick Islaub, was welcomed to the Club and it is hoped that he will enjoy his bowls with us. An added incentive for Rick was winning the “80 Club” prize. 17 July A celebration of the Pennant season was held today with all Pennant players enjoying some wonderful

Peter was distracted with a minor hamstring tear shortly after but continued regardless. It was enough to give Jeff the edge and from that moment he moved up a gear playing some consistent precision bowls, gradually drawing away to win the match and the Championship 31-16. Congratulations to all players who participated and thanks to all the markers and umpires who officiated during the competition It was a great win for Jeff, who will add yet another title to his already impressive record. In other news. The Club Championship Triples will commence next weekend and it is disappointing to note that there will be a very small field this year.
