Enthusiastic interest was shown by all who attended the initial meeting to form the Breast Cancer Group for the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest areas. All those who attended were in agreement that a group operating locally would be of great benefit as many of the attendees mentioned experiencing feelings of isolation. At this time the group was under the guidelines of the Cancer Council and was in the form of monthly

meetings and included monthly guest speakers. “Over the years the decision was made to include all women who have been affected with any form of cancer, not only Breast Cancer. “Instead of meetings with guest speakers we decided to have afternoon coffee once a month with a couple of luncheons a year,” said Lesley Kibble. Now in 2021, the group now call themselves WAC (women and cancer), and enjoy a fun filled informal luncheon once a month. The group no longer focuses on the intensity of cancer but on the inspiration

provided from long time survivors of the group. “Our focus is to support, encourage and develop friendships whilst sharing our strengths within a positive environment. “Over the last 20 years we have all thrived on the positive and happy contact that has been shared,” said Lesley. The group opens an invitation to ladies who have just been diagnosed and/or survivors to join them for conversation, laughter and comfort with friends who have been through similar circumstances. “At the moment we have approximately 27 ladies on our mailing list including many original members. “Each month there are about 15 ladies attending.

MIDCOAST Council’s Rural Living Strategy will have an extended exhibition period for a further ten weeks. Council is currently working on the Draft Rural Living Strategy, which has received immense feedback, particularly regarding paper subdivisions in the area. With Council staff receiving approximately 600-700 phone calls and Councillor Len Roberts reporting receiving at least 200 emails and phone calls combined, a Notice of Motion was raised

to assist the Land Use Planning team in receiving submissions. The new deadline for submissions will be 28 January 2022, with a 22 week exhibition period. Cr Len Roberts spoke about the influx of submissions. “People have been calling saying that we don’t like what Council is doing and then when they hear that these paper subdivisions have been this way for 40 years or longer, they are wanting Council to do something about it,” Cr Roberts said. “We’re hearing from the strategic

Earlier this year, one of Council’s largest ever community consultations saw over 700 people aged over 50 participate in the development of the MidCoast Draft Ageing Strategy, which is now on public exhibition for community feedback before it is endorsed by Council.

“This extraordinary result ensures that the strategies in the Ageing Strategy are representative of the whole community,” said Lyndie Hepple. EXPRESSIONS of interest are open from Monday 18 October until Friday 3 December for Round 7 of the Stronger Communities Programme. The Federal Coalition Government is giving local councils and community groups an opportunity to nominate projects for grants of between $2,500 and $20,000.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the latest funding injection would support up to 20 projects across the region. “I strongly encourage interested organisations to contact my office regarding projects important to them and our community. “Grants are available to cover up to 100 per cent of eligible project costs, or up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs for local governing bodies.”

F-35A Lightning II aircraft display A SINGLE F-35A Lightning II aircraft conducted handling display practice in a specifically designated airspace over Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest last week. Residents were able to view a flying display that has been developed for upcoming air shows. Fast jet aircraft from RAAF Base Williamtown use the airspace around the northern edge of Port Stephens as a designated display practice area. All display practice activities are conducted within strict safety and operational guidelines. Saving Species Keeping Cats Home By Marian SAMPSON THERE is a movement which is aimed at protecting our native species and it falls back on cat owners being responsible. In particular domestic cats should be contained at night when they pose the greatest risk to our native species. Cats are born hunters and domestic cats collectively kill 390 million animals annually. Sadly only 29% of domestic cats are kept inside 24 hours a day leaving around 2.7 million domestic cats roaming and hunting. Just one individual roaming pet cat can kill 186 reptiles, birds and mammals each year. A study found that of the cats kept in at night, 39% sneak out. Pet cats kill 30-50 times more animals per square kilometre around town than feral cats do in the bush. The NSW and Australian Governments, together with expert scientists, regularly identify that inappropriately controlled domestic cats are associated with native wildlife loss / biodiversity decline, can contribute to the feral cat issue in Australia, are a potential vector for disease and pathogens for people, animals and wildlife and can cause community nuisance. It is also widely recognised that local governments play a key role in domestic cat management under state and local law, particularly in urban communities. Matt Bell, MidCoast’s Senior Ecologist, told News Of The Area, “In recognition of the impacts of domestic cats, MidCoast Council adopts a range of cat prohibitions or confinement/curfew instruments within approvals for new developments, such as residential subdivisions, caravan parks and manufactured home estates.” These decisions are applied on a case by case basis, using expert evidence. “In the specific circumstances where a new development is proposed on a site that is adjoining, within or proximal to a significant environment / natural area where an at risk native species is present, then Council tends to strategically adopt domestic cat prohibition instruments (applied as a restriction as to user or public positive covenant under the Conveyancing Act 1919 or condition of consent in a community management scheme).” At risk species from domestic cats include Brush-tailed Phascogales, Eastern Chestnut Mouse, New Holland Mouse, Long-nosed Potoroos and Squirrel Gliders. “These species are frequently predated by domestic and feral cats, which can hunt local populations to extinction,” Matt said. The management of domestic cats is largely regulated by the NSW Companion Animals Act. In new developments that are more distant from a significant environment/ natural area where at risk native species are present, Council has often utilised cat curfews or confinement indoors or in cat runs through restrictive instruments or positive covenants on the title of the land to ensure that cats are prevented from roaming and harming native wildlife that the community values. Cat curfews and confinements are the second tier of domestic cat control and management near sensitive natural areas in new developments. In new developments remote from significant natural areas, then no cat exclusion or cat control restrictions or instruments are applied by MidCoast

As such, cat management/controls are applied to developments on a case by case / merits basis, with the level of control triaged on the sensitivity of the surrounding environment and the presence of at risk native wildlife populations. Free-roaming domestic cats are routinely observed in Council natural area reserves and other environmental areas across the MidCoast region.

Council job opportunities

q Samara Dun is completing an apprenticeship in horticulture with MidCoast Council.

MIDCOAST Council continues to invest in apprentices, graduates and trainees with a new round of exciting job opportunities opening for 2022. Council currently has 45 apprentices and trainees and 6 graduates in the organisation and this year’s round of job opportunities will boost those numbers further. From 11 October there are 19 exciting career opportunities available. This suite is made up of five apprenticeships, 11 traineeships and three graduate positions from across the organisation, including apprenticeships in heavy vehicle mechanics, engineering fabrication and parks and gardens, as well as finance traineeships, civil construction traineeships, water and sewer traineeships and graduate positions in engineering and

land use planning. “We’re excited to again be able to offer these fantastic career opportunities to our community,” said MidCoast Council’s General Manager, Adrian Panuccio. “A career in local government is always a good move and to be able to help people, regardless of their age, where they come from, or previous work experience, to kickstart such a life changing career, is something we’re really proud of.” This is the third year MidCoast Council has invested in the employment of apprentices, graduates and trainees. Over the last two years 38 apprentices and trainees and eight graduates have been able to start their career through the program. “To be able to offer a large number of opportunities like this each year, is fantastic.

“Our apprentices, trainees and graduates have all made really positive contributions to their teams, the organisation and to their community and I can’t wait to welcome the successful applicants from this year’s recruitment.” A full list of available positions can be found on Council’s website and applications close on Sunday 31 October. Short listed candidates will need to be available to attend an interview in November. MIDCOAST Council is encouraging all MidCoast residents to take the five simple steps to prepare for bushfires this year, and to make sure they have registered their Get Ready plan online. “We want every home on the MidCoast to have a bushfire survival plan this year, so make sure you, your family and your neighbours Get Ready following the steps on your household copy of the Get Ready plan at haveyoursay.midcoast. nsw.gov.au/getready and the NSW RFS recommendations,” said Mayor David West. A five week campaign is underway to guide you through the five steps to Get Ready, focusing this week on step 4 – being aware of the bushfire alerts around you, especially during the fire danger season. “The first way to keep updated is to watch for the NSW RFS Fire Danger Ratings, which are issued daily and are specific for your area. “Roadside Fire Danger

ratings signs are located throughout the MidCoast, or you can check the fire

information each day at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au,” said Mayor West.

“As the fire danger ratings increase, you should be following your bushfire

safety plan. “At severe and extreme ratings, the safest option is to leave early – don’t wait to see what happens. “At a catastrophic fire danger rating, your only option is to leave early. “No homes are built to withstand fires in catastrophic conditions and it is not safe to stay and defend your home.” During a bushfire, the RFS will issue alerts, which give you an indication of the level of threat from a fire. The Advice alert means a fire has started, and there is no immediate danger. You should stay up to date in case the situation changes. The Watch and Act alert means there is a heightened level of threat and conditions are changing. You need to start enacting your bushfire survival plan. The Emergency Warning alert is the highest level of bushfire alert. You may be in danger and need to take action now. “The RFS says you should

not wait for an alert – some fires start and spread so quickly there may not be any time for a warning. “Remember, leaving early is the safest option for your survival,” said Mayor West. “Downloading the fires near me app to your phone is one of the best ways to make sure you know when a fire starts, you can set to be alerted when a fire starts near you.” Otherwise, stay aware at the RFS website, via the RFS information phone line 1800 679 737 or via the NSW RFS social media sites. Integrated Vaccine Certificate On QR Code Check In By Marian SAMPSON

FOR many of us the past week has been a constant series of scanning a businesses’ QR code, signing into a venue with the Services NSW App, before switching onto the Medicare App to show our vaccination status. Now we can do this all in one step. Minister for Digital and Customer Service Victor Dominello said with restrictions to further ease as the state approaches 80 percent double vaccination, the integration of the vaccine certificate with the app will make things easier for the people of NSW.

“This is an extra digital service to make life easier for the businesses and customers of NSW as we open back up. NSW is the first jurisdiction in Australia to roll out an integrated QR code solution for displaying vaccination status State wide,” Mr Dominello said. “When someone visits a venue, they’ll be able to show their green check-in tick and vaccination status simultaneously, saving staff and customers time. “While integrating the COVID-19 digital certificate onto the Service NSW app will be optional, it will be by far the easiest and quickest way to prove you’re fully

vaccinated.” The State-wide roll out follows a successful regional pilot with clubs, aged-care facilities and taxis in Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga and Lismore, as well as internal government participants. As the vaccine data sits in the Federal Australian Immunisation Register to integrate the COVID-19 digital certificate into the Service NSW app you will need to: ensure your Federal MyGov account is linked to Medicare; download the Express Plus Medicare app and sign in with your MyGov account details; select ‘Proof of vaccinations’ and then

‘View history’; the elect ‘Share with check in app’ and then ‘Service NSW’. The whole process takes just a couple of minutes and will certainly simplify things as it will mean one less complication on check in. “I would like to thank the Federal Government, in particular Minister Stuart Robert, for his support and collaboration in making this happen and sharing the data at the end of last month,” Mr Dominello said. “I also want to thank the businesses and individuals who participated in the various industry-based trials this week in Port Macquarie, Lismore, Tamworth and Wagga and Wagga. “Your feedback has been invaluable in getting us to this point ahead of schedule.

Emergency Services Update By Tara CAMPBELL PUPPY Scammers Puppy scams remain at alarming highs, with NSW Fair Trading on track to equal the number of complaints received in 2020 relating to the canine cons that shot to prevalence during COVID-19. Using restrictions as an excuse to avoid meeting buyers in person, Scamwatch reported 590 complaints of scams involving selling animals totalling $568,470 in loss of money. Fallen Power Lines NSW SES are reminding everyone to stay safe around fallen power lines and to not go near any trees that may have fallen on power lines. Instead call Ausgrid on 13 13 88 and report the fallen powerline, or if the tree/ line is threatening life, call 000

immediately. Keep at least eight metres or two cars length away from the wire and always assume the wires are live. Pacific Highway Vessel Fire On 16 October, Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade were called to a vessel fire on the Pacific Highway at 3:30am. Responding with both the pumper and Cat 1 to Topi Topi, the brigade found an eight metre fibreglass boat on a trailer that was on fire and the car had unhitched. The boat was carrying 400 litres of fuel which Hazmat Taree and Heavy Hazmat Newcastle worked to decant. The Brigade quickly worked to bring the blaze under control with the support of Wooton RFB and NSW Police.

Plans for unmanned pools OPPORTUNITIES for opening unmanned pools in the MidCoast area will be investigated. In a Notice of Motion moved by Councillor Karen Hutchinson, the Councillor asked staff to report back to

Council as soon as practical with the cost implication and a plan for contracting out the management and operation services for Stroud, Bulahdelah, Nabiac and Krambach pools. The motion states that in the meantime, Council must immediately liaison

with and respond to the Hon. Katherine Cusack’s email that was sent to council relating to unsupervised pools (which slipped through the cracks in Health Orders), with the aim of getting the pools open this swimming season for our small towns and villages.

“Our roads melt in the 45 degree heat in Stroud and the other little villages in the area. “We don't have sea breezes and the communities need our support to get the pools open,” Cr Hutchinson said. The issue of unmanned

pools in the MidCoast area throughout COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions has been long-winded, with various restrictions not accounting for the smaller pools in the area. Cr Hutchinson’s motion was passed unanimously, with all committee members present supporting an investigation into the reopening of MidCoast’s unmanned pools.

THE Myall Park Tennis Club operates and maintains the four artificial grass tennis courts in Myall Park, Hawks Nest. During 2021, the club acquired and installed new LED lighting for the courts. The new lighting was officially switched on recently during a visit to

the club by The Hon. Taylor Martin MLC, and Tennis NSW regional representative, Kylie Hunt. They were welcomed to the club by a group of members, including Club President Lisa Dale, and Club Treasurer Brian Ayling. “We are pleased to have renewed the lighting on

all four of our all-weather courts," said Lisa. "The club's purchase of the new lights has been assisted through the receipt of almost $12,000 from the NSW Office of Sport through Tennis Australia’s ATP Cup Tennis Legacy Fund. “We are grateful to the NSW Government and Tennis Australia for their support,

and look forward to being able to provide an even better tennis experience for members and visitors with the new lighting." The tennis club was established by its founding members in 1980, and serves both local residents and visitors to the area. The club currently

has about 150 members, and welcomes everyone of all ages, and all playing standards. Tennis club membership is available to anyone of any age without any prequalification. Adult membership currently costs $60.00 per year; children $5.00.

The Hon. Catherine Cusack spoke regarding the situation, stating that she believes that the MidCoast Council area is the only Council in NSW to have unmanned pools. Ms Cusack expressed her disappointment with the current situation and is unable to make any promises regarding a definitive opening of the pools of the area.

Members can play daytime social tennis free of charge. Visitors can go online to hire a court at a cost of $16.00 per hour. Anyone interested in having a hit should visit the courts any Saturday afternoon and say hello.

Grants for 2022 NSW Women’s Week Do you have an inspiring project for women?

DO you have an inspiring project for women? If so, your project idea could receive State Government funding. Women and girls across NSW will benefit from a range of community, education and mentoring opportunities during 2022 NSW Women’s Week thanks to a $100,000 grants program from the NSW Government. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin encouraged local councils and not-for-profits to apply for a share of the funding to host events between 7 to 13 March 2022.

NSW reaches 80% double dose vaccination rate WITH 80 percent of NSW’s eligible population now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, new Reopening NSW Roadmap’s 80 per cent settings came into effect on Monday for those who are fully vaccinated. Community sport can resume, more friends and family will be reunited, and there will no longer be a cap on guests at weddings and funerals. Masks will also no longer be required in offices, and drinking while standing and dancing will be permitted indoors and outdoors at hospitality venues. From 1 November bookings for hospitality venues will no longer be capped. Also from 1 November, the NSW Government will remove quarantine requirements and caps for overseas arrivals who the Commonwealth Government

recognises as fully vaccinated with a TGA-approved vaccine, helping Australians stranded abroad get home before the end of the year. Further advice about testing requirements for arrivals will be provided in the coming days. Fully vaccinated travellers already in quarantine will also complete their quarantine requirements on November 1, even if it is less than 14-days. Overseas arrivals who are not fully vaccinated will be capped at 210 people per week, and will be required to undergo mandatory 14-days hotel quarantine. Travel between Greater Sydney (including the Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Shellharbour and the Central Coast) and Regional NSW will also be permitted from 1 November, to allow people in the regions more time to receive their second vaccine.

To support regional businesses likely to be impacted by this change the NSW Government will defer the second taper of the JobSaver program until October 31. Eligible regional businesses will receive 30 percent of weekly payroll, before tapering payments to the scheduled 15 percent from November 1. Premier Dominic Perrottet said the easing of restrictions and return of overseas travellers would help reunite families and be a significant boost for the economy. “We have reached this vaccination milestone quicker than anyone thought we could, and that is a testament to the hard work of people across the State turning out to get vaccinated,” Mr Perrottet said. “Welcoming back fully vaccinated travellers will

not only mean families and friends can be home in time for Christmas, it will also give our economy a major boost.” Deputy Premier Paul Toole said the tough decision had been made to delay travel between Regional NSW and Greater Sydney, with the NSW Government extending the JobSaver program for regional businesses. By 1 November, it’s expected more than 77 percent of regional LGAs will be fully vaccinated. “Everyone has done a brilliant job of getting vaccinated and rates are rising fast; however we have looked at the health modelling and listened to feedback from regional communities who want more time to get their double dose vaccination rates up as high as possible before they welcome back visitors,” Mr Toole said. “We know businesses in regional NSW were getting ready to welcome people back, but it’s important we get this right so that we can have greater confidence the

IT’S that exciting time of the year again when migratory and resident shorebird species start arriving into the Port Stephens area, as well as other favoured spots up and down the eastern Australian coast, to breed or rest and feed during their non-breeding season. Already there are significant numbers of Eastern Curlew and Bar-tailed Godwit along our beaches. They have flown thousands of kilometres from the Northern Hemisphere to enjoy our summer weather and abundant food resources along our shores and waterways. The Pied Oystercatcher returns in pairs to lay their eggs in roughly the same place each year.

Last Friday we met at Hawks Nest Golf Club for our October meeting and lunch. We held our annual elections and pleased to note we voted in all positions but two, so a wonderful start to the upcoming year. We had the following presentations to our members: 1. The ‘Making a Difference Award’ was presented to Judy McGavock who is our Vice President and Program Officer for all her hard work in attracting new members, her innovative ideas with table decorations and many interesting outings and speakers. Judy brings to the club many years of being in VIEW prior to here and being on many positions with VIEW. 2. Presentation of new members badges by Dorothy Thompson and Pam Smith. 3. The sand spoil at the Short Cut or East Channel of the Myall River is one place, and there are a few places on Corrie Island where pairs are currently getting ready to reproduce. The Little Tern will be looking to breed by early November around Winda Woppa and on Corrie Island by laying their eggs in shallow scrapes on the beach above the high tide line, similar to the Pied Oystercatchers. They have already been spotted in large numbers in the Harrington area, and we anticipate they will also choose this area. The NSW Dept of Planning Industry, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, The NSW Government’s Saving our Species Program, Hunter Local Land Services, Crown Lands and MidCoast Council work diligently all year to identify and manage threats and predators, where possible, install appropriate signage and fencing, undertake education and awareness programs and work in hand with local volunteers to monitor the numbers and breeding success of Little Tern, Pied Oystercatchers and Beach Stone curlew. All the species mentioned above are classified as Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered as suitable locations and conditions diminish with the growing impact of human activities. YOUR name conjures up a very sophisticated woman with perfectly manicured nails, a stylish hairstyle and designer outfits, who married a sadistic and psychopathic lunatic (no, not Mick Taylor ... the other one). Having said that, as your namesake discovered, you aren't a good match for a man who looks more like a beast than a beau. I understand that we've all let ourselves go during lockdown, though for some of us who still had to attend Zoom meetings, we have managed to stay relatively tidy, at least from the waist up. Ironically, I have felt a certain freedom in being masked. Once you don a pair of sunglasses, you really could be anyone. It's been liberating to go to the shops without makeup, and gradually other standards have slipped. Recently I've taken to shaving my legs up to the edge of my three-quarter length activewear pants. What a timesaver! Alas, all good things must come to an end, and for most of us, it's time to smarten up a bit. It's great that your husband feels comfortable in his own skin, and though Confucius said that 'Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it', I'm not sure that quote extends to mutton chop sideburns, protruding nasal and ear hair and eyebrows that would make John Howard shudder. If your husband is willing to embrace his new look, perhaps you could give him a taste of what it's like and let everything go au naturale. I think he'll get the message soon enough, and you can stop having nightmares of being chased and garrotted by a madman. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

A recent rise in the number of fatalities on NSW roads involving motorcycles, makes the publication of Motorcycling the Hunter more important than ever, to help motorcyclists ride to live. Motorcycling enthusiasts across the Hunter are set to benefit from the new guide which showcases the most popular motorcycle rides in the wider region — from pristine coastlines to wine country roads and beyond.
