receive the vaccine. “At this stage, we expect to be able to start accepting bookings in mid-April.” These vaccinations will be rolled out to those eligible in Phase 1b, with approximately 50 vaccinations per week. What are Deposit Bonds?

It is sometimes the case that a person will not have access to sufficient 'cash' funds to make payment of a deposit when purchasing property. As an alternative they may therefore wish to secure the deposit with a Deposit Bond. A Deposit Bond is issued by an Insurer, for a premium (typically a percentage of the Deposit Bond value). It is a written assurance by that Insurer, to guarantee payment of the monetary value of the Bond to the vendor, if called upon to do so. If Contracts are exchanged and the vendor has accepted a Deposit Bond from the purchaser to secure the deposit, if the vendor later becomes entitled to receive the deposit (forfeited by the purchaser due to a breach or default of the Contract), the vendor may call upon the Insurer to pay

to them the monetary value of the Deposit Bond. The Insurer would then seek to recover such funds as paid, from the purchaser. Certain factors must be considered when a Deposit Bond is utilised in a conveyancing transaction such as: the monetary value of the Bond; the validity period of the Bond; the nominated beneficiary under the Bond – as well as who is in possession of the original Bond. A vendor is not obliged to accept a Deposit Bond – perhaps approaching the matter in a similar vein to the other (perhaps betterknown) Bond who once famously said "well, I like to do things the old fashioned way". FLOOD DISASTERS, such as those currently unfolding in New South Wales and parts of Southern Queensland, are made more likely by climate change, say experts from the Climate Council. “The intense rainfall and floods that have devastated NSW communities are taking place in an atmosphere made warmer and wetter by climate change, which is driven by the burning of coal, oil, and gas,” said Climate Council spokesperson Professor Will Steffen. “For many communities dealing with floods right now, this is the latest in a line of climate change-exacerbated extreme weather events they have faced, including drought, the Black Summer bushfires, and scorching heatwaves,” he added. Global temperatures have risen 1.1°C since pre-industrial levels, and this has led to a 7 percent increase in water vapour in the atmosphere—increasing the likelihood of extreme downpours. “Climate change is harming the health, safety, and livelihoods of Australians, racking up billions of dollars in economic losses, and damaging many of our unique ecosystems. “It’s time for all levels of government and businesses to step up their climate action efforts to protect people, our environment and the economy,” said Professor Steffen. “We must take decisive action this decade to bring climate change under control. “Australia must get to net zero emissions well before 2040, and accelerate efforts to shift away from coal and gas to a fully renewablespowered economy,” he said.

Former Emergency Services Chiefs have also warned that climate change is worsening extreme rainfall and flood events such as the current situation in NSW and QLD, putting immense pressure on emergency response services and communities. “In my 40-year career I have never seen rainfall and flooding as widespread as the events occurring across much of NSW and QLD,” said Jim Smith, former acting Commissioner, NSW State Emergency Services and Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA) member. “Climate change is increasing the intensity and severity of extreme rainfall and flood events, and we are seeing the devastating consequences of this on people’s safety, homes, and livelihoods,” he said. “It has long been the norm for states to help each other by sending personnel and

resources across borders during emergencies, but the simultaneous extreme flooding in NSW and QLD shows how climate change threatens this practice,” said Mr Smith. Major General (Retd) Peter Dunn, former Commissioner, ACT Emergency Services Authority, added, “The Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements outlined 80 recommendations to improve Australia’s disaster response and preparedness, but the Federal Government has shown resistance at fully accepting and implementing all 80 of the recommendations. “Australians are on the frontline of backto-back extreme weather events fuelled by climate change, and cannot afford the growing costs of inaction,” said Mr Dunn. If you have never been to Stroud Show this is your chance to step back and attend a fair dinkum Aussie country show. The Show opens on Friday 9 April and finishes on Saturday 10 April with plenty of things on the program. Spectators can literally explore acres of activities while they enjoy entertainment, arts and craft exhibits, and eccentric contests. From the speedy fence post splitting competition, the Ute muster, the wife carrying comp and the demolition derby, it’s all action. Then there are the traditional produce, arts, crafts, farm and machinery displays. The Stroud show will truly have something for everyone. In the ring, equine enthusiasts will delight

with stallions, colts, mares and fillies competing in their various disciplines of show jumping, hacking, equestrian and show ring. It wouldn’t be an Ag Show without a showcase of incomparable livestock, products and produce from the Stroud Valley region and beyond, giving a true feel of what life in this real country town has to offer. Something will be brewing at the Showground for beer lovers this year. The boutique home brew contest boasts ten categories for the home brewer to enter their special pint in one or all categories. The most popular category, “experimental” sees a range of unique flavours available including vegetable and fruit based beers. Whether you are an experienced green thumb, an aspiring gardener or simply want to get inspired –the new Pavilion will be filled with the most unusual looking pumpkins as well as giant pumpkins, zucchinis and watermelons

all vying for the title of Most Successful Exhibitor. One of the highlight events is the often hilarious but strongly contested Wife Carrying Competition. While it isn’t all married couples you will find a tenacious bunch of women who join their male team mate on a hazardous but hilarious journey. As they cling to each other the teams must race through 80 metres of sand, take on a hay blockade and wade through a paddling pool. Just for extra fun there will also be a junior course where aspiring teams can try their hand at clinging together as they make their way through the course. The Australian Ute Muster is an iconic mustsee attraction with Ute enthusiasts from near and far descending on the Stroud Showground kicking up the dust again in the barrel race! Children will be entertained throughout the day with fun activities, an animal nursery, Troppo Magic show and amusement rides. The show committee are encouraging visitors to the show to take their time

World’s Greatest Shave fundraising despite flood By Alice HENNEN DESPITE the floods and constant rainfall during the last week, a bright Ray of sunshine has shone through. On Saturday 20 March, Bulahdelah residents Aleesha Ray and her husband Ash, along with his colleague Trevor McLeod, shaved their heads for the World’s Greatest Shave, to raise money for The Leukaemia Foundation. The wet weather necessitated a change of venue, with the event taking place in the carport of Bulahdelah Police Station. Unfortunately, the Bulahdelah branch of the Country Women’s Association could not make it to the event due to flooding. “I told the CWA ladies not to worry about putting themselves at risk or making too much effort to come out due to the weather,” Mrs Ray said. Donors were still keen to chip in for a good cause, and the trio raised a grand total of $5082.87, well above their initial goal of $4000.

NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian has announced an ease of COVID-19 restrictions to roll out from 12:01AM Monday 29 March. The lift in restrictions include: no caps on weddings or funerals, no restrictions on singing (including in places of worship), no restriction on dancing (including at weddings and in pubs and nightclubs), no cap on visitors in the home, 200 people allowed for personal outdoor public gatherings, all venues to move to the one person per two square metre rule, 100% seated capacity at entertainment venues

SES Visits Gilligan’s Island WITH the community of Myall Shores cut off by the flood waters the SES swung into gear to deliver urgently needed supplies. A crew from Gloucester SES were joined by a volunteer from Bulahdelah SES to deliver assistance to the community which is just a few clicks up the road and in need. That’s what the SES does, they go where they are needed and they help everyone that calls. Crossing the flooded waters the out of town SES team were greeted by a sight that they really weren’t expecting! With the crew sorted they set out to perform a resupply

Education On ANZAC Day Free For All

The Tomaree and Shoal Bay area was the first combined operations Australia/ United States Amphibious Landing Training Establishment in the south-west Pacific theatre. Landings under simulated invasion conditions were held on Zenith Beach, Wreck Beach and Box Beach in readiness for the amphibious invasions of Dutch New Guinea, Tarakan, Balikpan, as well as the Leyte and Lingayan invasions in the Philippines.

Australian Bravery Decorations ON Wednesday, Sergeant Smith and Senior Constable Moffat (Tea Gardens) of the NSW Police Force were awarded Australian Bravery Decorations by the Governor-General. Sergeant Smith and Senior Constable Moffat received the Bravery Medal after rescuing an elderly couple from floodwaters at Stroud on Tuesday 21 April 2015. The township of Stroud had experienced extreme weather conditions, with rain falling

quickly, causing flash flooding. Wind gusts reached in excess of 100kmph. Fast flowing water entered the Showground, sweeping an elderly couple away from their caravan. They managed to cling onto a brick amenities block near the showground's grandstand. Senior Constable Moffat, then a Constable, expertly maneuvered a small boat in the buffeting water towards the elderly couple, with another Sergeant Smith and a member of the public aboard. A second boat with two men aboard also joined the rescue effort. On nearing the amenities block, two of the

on ANZAC Day. Knowing that we care is important, in 2020 with COVID-19 Australians came out in force and stood at their driveways to stand with our returned service men and women. Learning about the sacrifice those who serve make and what war means is an important lesson in nationalism for all Australians. ANZAC Day will be commemorated across the nation at memorials once again on 25 April. It is hoped that access to the new resources will engage our youth in the meaning of ANZAC Day and the sacrifice made by so many to secure the lives we live in this country today. NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller APM, said he was proud to see so many officers recognised for their selfless and courageous actions. “The reality is that police face many dangerous scenarios every shift they work, and they will do everything they can to protect the lives of the people of NSW. “In the face of extreme challenges, these officers displayed bravery and are worthy recipients of the awards and commendations today,” Commissioner Fuller said. The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) awarded a total of 111 Australians with bravery decorations, including the 24 NSW Police Force officers. The Australian Bravery Decorations recognise courage and service to the community. Two Australian Bravery lists are announced every year. The independent Australian Bravery Decorations Council makes recommendations to the Governor-General regarding who should be recognised and at what level of award. SCHOOLS throughout Australia are about to gain valuable resources to help our children learn about the legacy of those who have served as ANZACs. New resources are being supplied free to educational institutions and include a range of different learning materials. These resources can also be accessed by members of the public. The addition of oral histories where students can learn about war from those who have served in their own words. The Department of Defence tells us that, “The resource will help students to gain a deeper understanding of Australian military history through first-hand accounts.” Interviews in this series focus on veterans' views on ANZAC Day. The resources available include over 100 biographies. Port Stephens has a rich military history starting with colonialism and having played a vital role in the defence of Australia during WWII. A CLEAN up on a massive scale is underway across the MidCoast as the region, declared a natural disaster area, recovers from a 1 in 100 year flood event. “As the sunshine returns to the MidCoast, we’re working as quickly as we can to clean up, and we’re asking for patience and cooperation from our residents and visitors as we restore our public spaces and beaches,” said Council’s Manager of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades, Dan Aldridge. Beaches will not be patrolled this weekend and swimmers and surfers are urged not to enter the water while large amounts of debris and waste continues to wash up on beaches along the entire MidCoast coastline, sometimes many kilometres from river entrances. “We’re still dealing with livestock carcasses which are being carried onto beaches from river outlets, along with large amounts of timber and farming debris.

Compliments to Council DEAR News Of The Area, I WOULD like to pass on my compliments to MidCoast Council for the efficient and safe way that they have managed the problem with the road pavement at the Hawks Nest end of the Singing Bridge. This problem seemed to occur with the heavy rainfall, just as much of the area was being flooded out, and unexpectedly happened. The installation of an efficient Traffic Management System, as other problems with the exceptional wet weather were

happening, was very much appreciated. This allowed local Residents to move between Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens relatively unaffected, whilst Council could focus on the difficult problems associated with flooding throughout the Local Government Area that it maintains. This operating system appears to be going well, and once the immediate flooding problems have been managed, the repairs to the pavement can be undertaken in a safe manner for Council's Maintenance Staff. Clean up underway “We’re also asking those with beach driving permits not to drive through the dune systems. Driving is only permitted within the intertidal zone to protect shorebird habitat, animal nests and vegetation. “Unfortunately if there is too much debris on the beach, then it’s a no-go zone for beach driving.” Some beaches have been stripped of sand and will need to be stabilised to ensure safety. Expect to see some machinery working on beaches as this occurs. Council teams are also working progressively through the region to clean up parks, reserves, showgrounds, sports fields, campgrounds and similar facilities. “For now, we’ve closed these facilities for bookings and will progressively reopen them as they are cleaned up and made safe.” The road network has also taken a massive hit during the prolonged weather event that beganThursday 18 March and concluded on Tuesday 23 March. Some roads remain closed as they are assessed and made safe, with the www. myroadinfo.com.au site the best way to stay updated on local roads, and www. livetraffic.com.au for major roads. Crews have already been dispatched to provide temporary fixes to fix potholes, while detailed assessment of the damage and required road repairs is undertaken.

MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott said, “We have a large road network to cover and a number of organisations coordinating road recovery tasks. “We ask motorists to please drive carefully and be patient in the days and weeks ahead.” There will be traffic control measures in place across the region as repairs are made, and some roads will open throughout the day but will close at night due to poor visibility and safety precautions. I AM having trouble imagining a Miss Wendy saying anything offensive. The name reminds me of that lovely lady from Romper Room, although I think that was Miss Kim. We shouldn't let names confuse us, however. I do believe Miss Kim swore like a trooper and chain smoked once the cameras stopped rolling. I mean, who wouldn't after years of trying to get kids to balance bags of rice on their heads or having to listen to that repulsive milk slurping noise when they had their refreshments. Holy sugar. Back to your question. I think, like most things, swear words in moderation can be used to great effect. There are some situations where a wellplaced swear word is absolutely necessary to get the intended meaning across. If you were snorkelling at Fly Point and a dark shadow approached that had a distinctive shark shape, you possibly wouldn't be saying 'oh darn', into your snorkel. This would sound like 'glop dlop' to the shark anyway, due to the effect of speaking through a tube underwater. Instead, what he'd more likely hear would be 'hoblo flug, whobla flugging hlop.' He wouldn't understand that either, so you'd probably still get eaten, but at least you'd feel the momentary release that well-placed swearing offers. On the other hand, people who feel the need to litter every sentence with swear words are just lazy and disingenuous. Some songs and movies would only be half their current length if they took out all the expletives. These words become so commonplace that they no longer have any impact. It's a bit like tattoos. A few strategic, meaningful ones are interesting, but when entire bodies are tattooed there is no delineation and therefore no impact. So, is the word bullsh-t offensive? I guess we will find out when this Jasminda column either does or does not appear in this week's paper.

Endless Rain By Peter THOMAS “IS the road to Buhladelah blocked?” I asked the postie as he stopped to deliver the mail. “No” he said, “You can still get through but there’s a warning of a new storm front coming. “There is an east coast low that will meet up with a trough system from the west,” said the postie. “Oh blast” I thought as I tried to go over the last few days of torrential rain in my mind. The other day while chatting to neighbours at the waterfront here in Nerong, I was half joking with them about whether the water would reach up to the doorstep of Annie's, which was once a popular restaurant. None of us thought it could happen. I’ve lived in Nerong for

20 years and have never seen water rise above the ramp. I walked down to the ramp and was confronted with a disaster scene! The river was up to the front door at Annie’s, now known as Diesel Dave’s. I waded in up to my waist in water near the front gate. The road past the community centre was now under a metre of water. The houses on the opposite side of Annie’s were now almost level with the river. A canoe floated upside down near a submerged tinny. An eerie silence was broken only by the cries of a yellow tailed cockatoo. Water lapped around the table and chairs of the community centre. I waded in the water, once more up to my waist in the aptly named Waterhen Park. A four wheel drive went

past the community centre with water up to the top of its wheels. For a moment I felt glad that I had bought on the other side of the hill. My house is on the high side of the road coming into Nerong from the highway. People on this side of Nerong often refer to themselves as fibros and the waterfront people as silvertails. Somehow you felt safer on this side away from potential waterfront river flooding. That morning however, my neighbour Joan came over to say there was flooding in the properties on the other side of the road. She was holding two chooks. ‘Can you look after these?” she asked. . “My friend across the road owns them but her property has flooded. “Her four other chooks drowned in floodwaters in their backyard last night!”

I walked over to the other side of the street and looked at the houses. All the backyards were inundated with water from the lake at the back. In some backyards the water had come up to the backdoor. Some were thinking of evacuating. During the day SES crews appeared. By Monday evening the rain had eased. We probably had up to 400millitres of rain in the last week, with predictions of a further 100 millilitres of rain to come. The frogs sung in the water soaked evening landscape. A car drove by in the rain soaked, potholed road out the front. A rush of water surging past its tyres. Neighbours stood out the front of their properties wondering if the rain would ease off. The highway was silent.

Mungo Brush Road. “I had been working, we were out catching brim and we were over in that corner because I have eel traps over there,” said Shane. “You could see right through into the campground and I thought I would go have a look. “It was unbelievable the amount of water in there,” he said. Driven by his curiosity, Shane manoeuvred the boat through the Dee’s Corner campsite, and out onto Mungo Brush Road. “I’m assuming that is probably the first time anyone has taken a boat down Mungo Brush Road,” Shane said. “Not being on a trailer anyway!” “From where I went in at

the Dees Corner Campground, you can pretty much go all the way to Mungo Brush. “If you went the other way and went in at The Wells Campground, you could go all the way to the ferry.” An experienced man on the water, Shane couldn’t believe the water level in the campgrounds. “In the camping ground (The Wells), I didn’t even need to trim my motor down to drive around the campsite, my motor wouldn’t have even touched the poles that are in the ground out there.” Thankfully for Shane, the tops of the traffic signs on the road were still visible. “Next to a ‘4wd only past this point’ sign you can see a 70km speed limit sign as you go down the road,” he said.

24 MARCH After a six-day drenching, at last the sun returned to enable bowlers to enjoy the synthetic green whilst the grass recovers. Some players probably thought that with so much rain we could not possibly bowl, but bowl we did with 38 bowlers on hand for 10 triples teams and 4 pairs teams. The winners were Chris Ross, Dennis Ashbridge and Ron Green with 20 points on a 2-end countback The lucky losers were Peter Campbell, Kev Barbie and Dave Perry with 14 points on a 1 end countback Col Amos won the Garden Eatery voucher, I so much wanted it to be me as the meals are first class. 27 March A big weekend of Pennant bowls commenced today with Grade 4, the

“fabulous fours” playing host to Lemon Tree Passage. In a tight match Tea Gardens prevailed winning the Master Board 56-44 and the points 9-1. Grade 7, the “mighty sevens”, also played at home and pulled off a great win against Fingal Bay. Two shots were the margin, Tea Gardens 60-58. The points 8.5 - 1.5. They tell me the Club President had a hand in this! Grade 5 played Fingal Bat at Fingal Bay and although winning one match they were beaten 44-71. Grade 6, the “super sixes”, fared much better with a good win away at Karuah. They dropped one match but ran out overall winners 71-54. It was great to catch up with former Club President, Ken McKeown at Karuah and nice to see him well and still playing.

THE 2020/21 Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club Nippers season has come to an end and the Club had a lot to celebrate at the presentation on Sunday 7 March. With many measures put in place to work with Covid-19 regulations it was a challenging season but that didn’t stop this season being the biggest in many years. As the season went on more and more Nippers joined, and the program reached over 100 Nippers. Each and every Sunday morning the 5 to 16-year old’s would turn up to the beach en masse and put their surf skills to the test. Events include surf swimming, board races, beach sprints, wade races, flags and lots of fun games for the little ones. The program has a surf safe and awareness component where Nippers learn to identify dangers and read wave patterns along with sun safe measures. The Nippers calendar includes four Championship Days where Nippers put their skills to the test and record results that are tallied for Age Championship results.

Age champions include: Piper McColl, Jesse Macklin, Audrey Russell, Max Vesper, Lily Fidden, Liam Mitchell, Matilda Fidden, Jack Browne, Amarlieah Mobbs, Lewis Smith, Grace Ward, Noah Rodgers and Tyler Rodgers Special award winners: Dr Ian Everett Award for highest overall point score: Matilda Fidden Vince McLean encouragement: Nicholas St Pier Chris Richards encouragement: Blake Ford Rex Sargeant: Harrison Skelly-Osmond The club would like to thank the Nippers and their parents for being part of the program this year and a huge thank you to the wonderful Age Managers and water safety for their tireless efforts throughout the season. Thank you also to our ongoing sponson of Hawks Nest bakehouse for supplying our bread for free every time we held a fundraising BBQ and also to Aussie Dave’s Jumping castles for coming and setting up on the day of presentation only to be pelted with the horrible weather and not even charging us for the service. We hope to see you all again later in the year for the start for the next season.
