Proposed beachside development sends Coast community

FROM Page 1 explored the involvement of former Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council (KLALC) CEO and current MidCoast Councillor Len Roberts in the original sale of the land and its subsequent rezoning. Mr Roberts described the Four Corners report as “deceptive journalism”. “This story was about the Obeids, it wasn’t about Len Roberts,” he said. The alleged plans for the site, as featured on Four Corners, reportedly obtained from an email from Gerard Obeid and Jason Irvine, show the scale of the planned development, a complex of four-storey apartment blocks and luxury villas close to the beach. While no formal Development Application has been lodged for the site, locals were quick to express their dismay at the alleged plans. Featured on the Four Corners report was Kathy Poldmaa, an administrator of the Hawks Nest Development Facebook group, which keeps locals abreast of planned development within the community. “I started the Facebook group to make people aware of what is going on locally in terms of developments and to make people’s lives easier to lodge their submissions and what not, because the Council submissions website is a nightmare,” Kathy said. “We are fighting the good fight here, I am not about having oversized developments in our beautiful town,” said Kathy. “I am here to help the community with that sort of stuff. c NOTA Graphics - Ref: TGCC_MYALL_1812021_NEINA

“We have an aged community and now all these other developments are coming up, like this one on Four Corners which has knocked everyone’s socks off. “It has opened everyone’s eyes to what is going on in our community.” Len Roberts, in his role as CEO of the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council, managed the sale of two blocks of land to the developers in question for $1.5 million in 2016. The Four Corners report alleged that one of the buyers was Mervin Ibrahim, a business associate of the Obeid family. Kathy Poldmaa said the community held grave concerns over the sale of the land. “I think the community is really concerned about how the land was handled to start off,” Kathy said. “If that had been up for sale, I would have bought it, it was so bloody cheap. “I think that’s where people are furious,” she said. Mr Roberts has defended his actions, arguing that the selling of land was essential given the Land Council’s poor financial situation at the time. “When I took over just before then as the CEO of the Land Council, the Land Council was absolutely broke and was told that unless they had a CEO they were going to be wound up. “I was there for three years, and I volunteered my time throughout. “One of the things I was charged to do, was to start selling land to get the land council out of its financial trouble.

“We saw there was going to be an opportunity to sell the land, they were extremely interested, we then had to trigger and follow the procedures of the Land Rights Act.” Mr Roberts said the land was sold above market value. “The valuations came in at $750,000 and we sold it for $1.5 million.” Mr Roberts said he had the full support of the Land Council to move forward with the sale at the time. “People knew about it. “We sent out a letter to every member to tell them about the meeting,” said Mr Roberts. The NSW Aboriginal Land Council stated last week that the sale of the land complied with the Land Rights Act. “The decision to sell the land was taken by KLALC members at a meeting held in December 2016. “The potential sale of land was also discussed at a member’s meeting, immediately prior to the meeting at which it was approved. “The Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (ALRA) stipulates very strict rules for how Aboriginal Land Councils can deal with their land, including disposals, which requires members special approval, which is a higher approval threshold than other member decisions. “According to the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) records, the KLALC members decision to sell the land complied with the Land Rights Act.” NSWALC then approved the sale on the basis that it was consistent with the requirements of the Land Rights Act and was for not less than the market value of the land.

could set a precedent for development in the area. “Our main concern is that this is the beginning of the end for North Hawks Nest. “And if the one further north along the beachfront also gets sold by the Land Council to developers, then we will have a coastal strip of high-rise developments right along the unspoilt beach. “We have major concerns about the potential height and scale of this proposed development right on the foredunes on the beach. “It would be terrible and ruin the entire aspect of the beach." Mr Morphett also expressed concerns about the impact of development in the area on koala populations. “That will ultimately impact on koala movement because koalas really need wildlife corridors to move between multiple locations for genetic diversity.” MidCoast Councillor Peter Epov voted against the rezoning of the 1.5 hectares of beachside land and the voluntary planning agreement. He stated, “I have been concerned about development in the Hawks Nest area for a number of years. “The Voluntary Planning Agreement processes appear to have been questionable in terms of accurately reflecting community sentiment. “The meagre contribution of $127,000 from the proponent for community projects, appears to be inconsistent with the impact of a potential multi hundred-million-dollar development.” Mr Epov said development across the MidCoast LGA needs to be “thoughtful, balanced, sustainable, and transparent”. Sandra Bourke, a Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest local running on Mr Epov’s ticket in the upcoming local government election said, “This sale to Merwin Ibrahim and associates raises serious questions about the conduct of Len Roberts as a current Councillor, as the former CEO of the Karuah Aboriginal Land Council, and as the author of the Preliminary Cultural Heritage Assessment dated 2 July 2018, that subsequently informed the Council’s re-zoning of the land from RE1- Public Recreation, to R3Medium Density Residential on 28 April 2021. “I understand that councillors and candidates are required to, at law, declare all close associations and conflicts of interest with respect to property development. “This is not what appears to be happening in our LGA." Ms Bourke's concerns are addressed in statements (above) from Mr Roberts and the NSW Aboriginal Land Council.

“NSWALC has no reason to doubt the accuracy of the valuation provided at the time.” The Sanderling Avenue land was effectively rezoned at MidCoast Council’s April 28 2021 meeting, changing the land’s zoning from RE1 Public Recreation to R3 Medium Density Residential. MidCoast Council said the planning proposal approved in April 2021 sought to: ● amend the current zoning from RE1 – Public Recreation to R3 – Medium Density Residential; ● impose a maximum floor space ratio of 1:1; ● amend the height of buildings from 8.5m to 12m; ● impose a minimum dwelling density of 30 dwellings/ha; and ● impose a minimum lot size of 1Ha. “With the exception of the 1ha minimum lot size, these are the standard development controls for the R3 – Medium Density zone in the Great Lakes Local Environment Plan 2014 and are consistent with the neighbouring golf course land. “The 1ha minimum lot size is proposed to prevent subdivision of the land. “This will have the effect of ensuring that the land is developed at the one time to facilitate integration of this site into the adjoining golf course. “A Planning Proposal must be considered by Council in accordance with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation 2000. “This obligation applies regardless of the landowner.” Council said the planning proposal was also required to meet all obligations in relation to Council’s Planning Proposals and Development Control Plan Applications Policy. Reports in relation to the proposal meeting these obligations were presented to the elected body of Council at public meetings on the following dates: ● 27 February 2019 Ordinary Meeting ● 26 August 2020 Ordinary Meeting ● 28 April 2021 Ordinary Meeting ● 22 September 2021 Ordinary Meeting Consultation with the community on the Planning Proposal took place between 16 November 2020 and 5 February 2021. The feedback from this exhibition period was reported to the elected Council at the 28 April 2021 meeting. At this meeting the Council resolved to adopt the planning proposal and effectively rezone the land. The planning proposal has not yet been formalised as Council is still awaiting the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to finalise a technical review of the maps associated with the rezoning. This is likely to be provided by the end of this year. Mr Roberts voted for the rezoning on two occasions, however abstained from the vote on April 28 after receiving criticism that he had a conflict of interest. Mr Roberts said that while he did not believe he had a conflict to declare, he sat out of the vote in the interests of integrity. “In order to have a conflict of interest I have to be somehow associated with the people. “The owner of the land, I had only ever met once prior to the finalization of the sale. “I don’t have a conflict of interest. “To have a conflict of interest I would have to have made one cent out of it or lose one cent.” Ian Morphett, Secretary of the Myall Koala and Environmental Group, is one of many locals fearful the proposed development

personalised for Australia's part in activities but it is about remembering that war comes at a tremendous cost. “We have got to be mindful of that and hopeful that war always remains a last resort.” Mr Motum said Remembrance Day was an important opportunity for exservicemen and women in the community to come together and reflect. “It is the second time of the year that we can remind people of the great contribution of members of the Defence Force of Australia throughout the years. “In this community we don't have a lot of serving younger people. “Those who fought in the Vietnam War are getting older now. “It is very important for them to get out and remember. “We lost a significant amount of lives in Vietnam over the years, between 600 and 700, so it is very important for them.” During the service, Mr Motum spoke about the resurgence of Remembrance Day commemorations in recent years. “After the Vietnam war, the commemorations were very small because there was a lot of anti-feeling towards the war. “I remember going to an Anzac Day service in Canberra in 1971 when I was a young cadet. “Essentially the service was conducted around the Pool of Remembrance.

“There would have been less than 200 people there at the major Anzac Day service of the year. “Now there are thousands, and there is a resurgence in interest. “This followed on to a resurgence of interest in Remembrance Day and reflection on what it means.” Tea Gardens RSL sub-Branch Secretary Jenny Ross-Henry thanked the community for braving the weather to join the service. “As an ageing population, I thank all of our members for coming out today in this horrible weather,” she said. Jenny reserved special thanks for a group of helpful locals who helped the service run so smoothly. “I would especially like to mention the women from the old Ladies Auxiliary who have come forward to replenish twenty wreaths which we use for all the local organisations in town. “They have done a sterling job, thankyou ladies. “I would also like to thank Uve who comes forward every year with our sound equipment and helps us greatly.”

Meet The Candidates: Sandra Bourke By Tara CAMPBELL AS the Local Government Election approach, News Of The Area is introducing you to the candidates for the election. Sandra Bourke is running as an independent on Peter Epov’s ticket. With thirty years of policing, national security and project management and a family history that dates back to 100 years in the Tea Gardens area, Sandra is excited to be running for the first time for MidCoast Council. “Up front, it is time for a change. “I care about authentic engagement and ensuring policy is implemented, with value for money and with accountability,” Ms Bourke said. Sandra is an active community member who has been active with the re-

opening of pools, volunteers cleaning up local parks, swims with Myall Masters and volunteers with the local Lions Club, Progress Association and Chamber of Commerce and Surf Club. Ms Bourke has aligned herself with the Peter Epov Group and passionately believes in the group's values and desire for change. “Peter Epov is the only current independent Councillor who has consistently voted in the best interests of Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and the surrounding villages, which is much more than I can say for any of the others. “Our Group has shared values of integrity, candour, courage and communication, to name a few; we are regular people, committed to change for the better,” Ms Bourke said. If elected, Sandra pledges to work with communities

across the MidCoast to improve services paid for with resident’s rates. “Our roads, services and infrastructure need to be maintained and improved without massive hikes in council rates. “Clearly, we also need to improve the transparency of our Development Application processes - the recent Four Corners program on the Obeid’s investment was a big shock for our community. “It should be easier to know who is doing what and to know if and how developments benefit our community while also safeguarding our environment and history,” she said. Although she resides in Tea Gardens, Sandra believes in uniting all of the MidCoast. “The issues that we’re all facing in Tea Gardens are MidCoast wide and I believe

STATEMENT BY LEN ROBERTS This is a first response by me to material broadcast about me in the Four Corners Show (it cannot be said to have been a “Report”) on Monday, 8th November 2021. Fact 1 – There were material untruths and misrepresentations broadcast by the Four Corners Show. • •

I have never met nor had any association with the Obeid family. There is nothing before Council regarding any proposed development at the Golf Club site nor, I believe, has the Golf Club board had any proposal before them regarding a development of former Aboriginal land at Hawks Nest. Until a time (if any) when development of the referenced land does come to Council, no Councillor can make comment, other than by way of an authorised private statement. The community will be given their opportunity to have their say. To a material extent, the diagrams and illustrations of proposed building development work at Hawks Nest which were broadcasted in the Show were not genuine. One such illustration shown in the broadcast, clearly pictures buildings superimposed upon existing Golf Course land, not former Aboriginal land. The diagrams used to represent possible or intended developments were prepared by Four Corners themselves. I believe that this was deceptive and misleading in a way that can only have been deliberate misreporting.

Fact 2 – In 2016, the KALC were undergoing extreme financial crisis, facing Administration and Ministerial intervention. I was approached by the Board of KALC to help KALC remain out of Administration. Accordingly, I volunteered my time. My appointment as CEO of the KALC was ratified by the Members in General Meeting. I stipulated that I should not be paid for that role. Following years of discussions, and wholly independently of me, the Golf Club resumed their approach to purchase part of the land surrounding the carpark, which they were already using as golf club carpark. The land was also being used as a council dump site. Fact 3 – Council minutes for the Meeting dated 28th April 2021 specifically show that I did NOT vote on the matter for amended rezoning of the land, so that it could proceed to State Government, and I left the room. I stated that very fact in my interview, but this was left out of the program after editing by Four Corners. The misleading result after the editing of my interview with Four Corners was that they imputed against me that I had failed to declare all conflict of interests in breach of my obligation, which is untrue. Fact 4 – The value of the land was determined by an independent qualified valuer approved by NSWALC and the land was sold above market value. The land was sold in 2016. Fact 5 – To my knowledge, there have been a number of first-hand independent complaints about how the Four Corners Show was factually incorrect, distorted the truthful story, was broadcast without apparent concern of consequence to those who participated in the Show, and was biased and incorrect. All of these statements support the truth that I acted at all times in a completely ethical way, that I was fully compliant with my roles, and I fully complied with all applicable procedural law. Fact 6 - I quote from the Statement issued by NSWALC. There was no impropriety with respect to the sale of the land According to the NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) records, the KALC members decision to sell the land complied with the Land Rights Act. https://bit.ly/3qsLK6C Bev Manton a highly esteemed and respected Worimi elder, a past Chairperson of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, who has addressed the United Nations and was a board member of KLALC testifies to and stands by the process as outlined above. Fact 7 – this attack on me by the Four Corners Show, is false and misleading and demonstrably untrue. It has caused me, and to my knowledge, others wrongly mentioned in the Four Corners Show, great damage and harm. I continue to notice, those who continue to attack me and to question my integrity. I will not be letting that rest, and there will be appropriate legal responses. I have always had the best interests at heart for the community of Tea Gardens Hawks Nest and the broader community of the Mid-Coast Council, which I have served for over twenty years. I will, in the first instance, be setting the records straight, proving with documents and impartial, truthful witnesses, what is factual and true and disproving what is falsely alleged in the Four Corners Show. BULAHDELAH residents were forced to search elsewhere to pay tribute to those who fought in the Great War with no service offered at the Cenotaph. A number of locals arrived at 10am on Thursday morning expecting a commemoration but none took place. It looked as if none had been organised, however there was no notification it had been cancelled. Ros Lansdowne said she waited half an hour and searched for some sign of a service elsewhere in town. “After living in Bulahdelah for the last sixty years we expected a service just like every other year,” she said. In fact, no public service was planned.

Bulahdelah RSL Sub-Branch Secretary Steven Newman said with only 14 volunteers, they weren’t able to hold the service they’d like to. “Many of the volunteers have been sick and in hospital,” he explained. “We simply couldn’t organise a commemoration with so few people.” With no clear sign of the cancellation, residents believed the service would go ahead, but the RSL couldn’t notify otherwise in time. “It's just a shame that they couldn’t tell us it wasn’t on,” Mrs Lansdowne said. Nearby, the Armistice was remembered at Tea Gardens and also at both St Joseph’s Primary School and Bulahdelah Central School Steven Newman says the RSL is aiming for a much greater commemoration next year. As COVID-19 restrictions ease across the state, the Bulahdelah RSL is looking to reconnect with their members and the community.

National Recycling Week NATIONAL Recycling Week (8 to 14 November 2021) was a great time to start a conversation about what belongs in your yellow recycling bin and what doesn’t. The good news is, as a community we are keen to recycle and to get it right. We understand that recycling keeps waste out of our landfills. “Our recent household waste audit showed around 80% of materials in our yellow bins were recyclable. “The rest of the contents were 'contaminated' materials and items that don't belong in the yellow bin,” Paul De Szell, Council’s Director

of Liveable Communities explained. “We need your help to do better, so that everything you place in the recycle bin is recyclable.” Dirty paper and containers, soft plastic and bags, clothing and shoes, ropes and twine, should not go in the yellow bin. The key to ‘recycling right’ in the yellow bin is to: ● Keep it simple – clean paper, cardboard, aluminium and steel cans, glass bottles and jars and rigid plastic can go in the recycling. ● Keep out soft plastics - if you can scrunch your plastic into a ball it

cannot go into your recycling bin. You can REDcycle it. ● Keep out small items - nothing smaller than a business card, including lids. ● Keep it loose - not in plastic bags or boxes ● Keep it clean – empty and rinse containers

THE Legislative Assembly of the NSW Parliament has taken a significant step in passing a Bill which requires consent to be actively sought and obtained before engaging in any sexual activity. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington addressed the Assembly, speaking of its necessity and importance. “It's a bill that picks up the fundamental principles set out by the New South Wales Law Reform Commission, whereby every person has the right to choose whether or not to participate in sexual activity; consent should never be presumed. “Consensual sexual activity involves ongoing and mutual communication, decision making, and agreement between the participants,” Ms Washington said. For many years, laws surrounding sexual assault and rape have failed victim survivors and this Bill is a large step towards justice for these members of society. “We’ve had a justice system stacked against women who've suffered

sexual assault. “Many people have known this for a long time and have been pushing for change for years because for too long, women have been let down by the law,” Ms Washington said. Right now only a small number of sexual assault cases even reach those courtrooms in the criminal justice system and of those cases that even make it to that point where charges are laid and aggresses are held to account, only 1.5% of sexual assaults result in a conviction. “Survivors of sexual assault, be they women, men, or transgender people need to be able to find justice in the system. “The bill before us today is a step towards much needed welcome change,” Ms Washington said. Changes include a positive obligation to ascertain consent prior to a sexual activity and revoking of consent and the point that consent is not everlasting. “Under these changes, there is no consent if the person does not, within a reasonable time before or during the time of the sexual

activity, say or do anything to find out whether the other person consents to the sexual activity, the concept of consent is expanded in both a positive and negative sense. “Under this bill, consent is when someone freely and voluntarily agrees to this sexual activity, it can be withdrawn at any time and if sexual activity continues after consent being withdrawn, it is not consent. “If consent is given in regards to a particular sexual activity, it's not necessarily consent to another sexual activity. “Consent given to a person on one occasion is not to be taken as consent with that person on another occasion,” Ms Washington said. The Bill aims to recognise that there is no consent if a person does not say or do something to communicate consent, and that there is no consent if someone does not have the capacity to consent. The Bill also proposes changes to the Criminal Procedure Act 1986 to introduce five new directions about consent for judges to give juries at a trial. “These changes are

Croquet Club relishing relaxed restrictions By Marian SAMPSON

FOR many the world is getting back towards the new normal and after nearly two long years of uncertainty and restrictions, community sport is also entering a new era. For the members of the Myall Park Croquet Club further easing of restrictions has been welcomed. Club members are now able to get together and enjoy a game of croquet at Myall Park. Tony Jones told News

Of The Area, “Following the release of restrictions on Saturday, 11 September for regional areas, the Croquet Club reopened the courts for a maximum of 20 members.” With these changes the Club has already seen 20 members enjoying their first game together. “Social distancing was easily maintained on the 2000 m² lawns which had been maintained carefully throughout the lockdown by Colin McArthy.” Maintenance of the

grounds is currently underway with herbicide spraying and fertilising being conducted and within the next few weeks the lawns will be aerated and subsequently top dressed. “In the meantime, our members are enjoying the lovely spring weather and exercise with the games and an excellent level of play,” he said. HUNDREDS of new trees to feed local koalas will soon be growing around the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest area following two successful giveaways of seedlings. Over two Saturdays, Woody’s Nursery and Hunter Valley Providores in Tea Gardens hosted the annual koala food tree giveaway that has traditionally taken place during the Myall River Festival, which was cancelled this year due to COVID-19. Although this year’s giveaway was a month later than usual, volunteers from the Myall Koala and Environment Group (MKEG) were promised that the 200

koala feed trees people took away would be planted as soon as possible before the hotter weather arrives. The trees were mainly dwarf Parramattensis, which koalas love but only grow up to four metres, perfect for urban yards because fully grown they don’t overhang people’s gutters. A few swamp mahogany trees, another favourite with koalas, were given to people with larger properties as they grow to 30 meters. It is an important winter-flowering tree as it provides a good supply of nectar at a time of year when there is little else for

many species including the regent honeyeater, greyheaded flying fox and gliders.

A local beekeeper said he was very happy to plant a few especially for these

features. The trees were grown and donated by MidCoast

As well as generous donations from Woody’s Nursery and Hunter Valley Providores, many people also made donations at the stall, raising more than $425. Marilyn Mercer donated a number of beautiful handmade toy koalas that will be raffled at the next big fundraiser. MKEG President Richard Streamer thanked all the volunteers, the hosts and everyone who made donations or took away seedlings to plant. “This work is a vital part of helping to conserve koalas and other wildlife in our area,” he said.

Filmed in response to the pandemic after Nick Cave (pictured above) couldn’t embark on his American and European tour with his Bad Seeds band, this is mesmerising and beautiful viewing. The iconic Australian singer-songwriter performs from his sweeping catalogue of songs in an empty and atmospheric Alexandra Palace in London. Cave doesn’t utter a single word other than lyrics, but it feels personal as we witness him play with passion, sadness and verve.

Eclectic Art Display By Marian SAMPSON ART is one way that many seniors engage in to connect with others within the community. It is a way to explore creativity, the environment while learning new skills. When groups work towards similar project goals the results whether completed in groups together or as individuals and brought together later can create stunning displays.

A group of seniors in the Tea Gardens area have recently been working on mixed media projects. The results can be seen at the Myall Street Studio. Barbara Peacock told News Of The Area, “I run an Art Group for older people who just want to explore art and have fun. “Earlier this year I set them a challenge to reproduce some of the businesses in Tea Gardens, using mixed medium, and ignoring the

normal art rules. “The results are an eclectic and colourful display now on show at the Myall Street Studio, Shop 1, 205 Myall Street, Tea Gardens.” The works which depict local scenes are for sale and any funds raised will be used to buy resources for the group’s future works. Anyone interested in joining the group can contact Barbara via the Myall Street Studio.

Artists selected to kickstart Barrington Coast Art Trail THE establishment of a self-drive art trail along the Barrington Coast has taken a significant step forward, with a pair of successful concepts chosen to feature on prominent water reservoirs at Barrington and Tea Gardens. Newcastle-based architectural design firm Curious Practice has been selected to transform a decommissioned water reservoir on Argyle Street, Barrington, with the firm’s bold proposal to fix art to the reservoir helping it stand out from other submissions. Entitled ‘Undertow’, the design features a field of cicadas and stars studded like rich jewels across the tank’s surface, prompting viewers to consider the complex and concurrent cycles of life. MidCoast Council’s Manager of Growth, Economic Development and Tourism, Deb Tuckerman, who helped conceptualise the Barrington

Coast Art Trail – The Tanks project, said Curious Practice’s concept was unique and took advantage of the fact the reservoir was no longer in service. “Where most other submissions involved painting a mural on the reservoir, Curious Practice took an approach that was quite literally outside of what we expected,” said Mrs Tuckerman. “Pleasingly, the concept was created by Curious Practice’s graduate architect, Luke Grey, who grew up in Gloucester and was the dux of Gloucester High School, so there’s a nice local connection there.” Newcastle-based artist Jordan Lucky of Playstate has been selected to add some colour to two reservoirs on Viney Creek Road at Tea Gardens, with Jordan’s experience painting life-like murals of Australian flora and fauna getting him over the line

Hunter Joint Organisation a finalist in Climate Champion Award THE Hunter Joint Organisation (Hunter JO), in collaboration with its 10 Member Councils and Central Coast Council, has been announced as a finalist for the Climate Champion Award in the Cities Power Partnership’s (CPP) 2021 Climate Awards. The CPP Climate Awards recognise the work of local government organisations paving the way to a zerocarbon future. The Hunter was the first region nationally to have all Member Councils join the CPP, Australia’s largest local government climate action network, and has been

working to support Member Councils to embed their CPP commitments into key governing documents. This can be seen through the development of our Climate Change Integrated Planning and Reporting (IP&R) package which has now been released as a working draft. The Climate Change Integrated Planning and Reporting package supports Councils’ and their communities’ climate change journey by providing user friendly, practical tools and templates to embed climate change throughout the IP&R process.

The councils in the Hunter JO’s CPP program include Central Coast Council, Lake Macquarie City Council, Newcastle City Council, Port Stephens Council, MidCoast Council, Dungog Shire Council, Maitland City Council, Cessnock City Council, Singleton Council, Muswellbrook Shire Council and Upper Hunter Shire Council. RSL LifeCare, owners of The Grange Retirement Resort, have been sponsoring this event since 2011 and the Club is very grateful of their continued support. Dear Suzy,

OUR local group recently had the opportunity to meet outside the Peter Sinclair Gardens facility to celebrate our passion for gardening. Many generous donations of both cut flowers and potted plants were given to the residents and during the afternoon Frances Michel showed us how to arrange mostly locally obtained flowers and vegetation as well as pine cones to make a table display around a Christmas candle and also discussed a floral arrangement which she then donated to the facility’s foyer. Despite it being hot under the trees we were very glad to be able to see a number of residents through the fence enjoying our time together. Ruth CALCUTT, Coordinator, Myall Garden Lovers Group.

Beaches and Animals AS a resident of Hawks Nest I love to see locals exercising their dogs and horses on the beach. We don’t complain about the dirty nappies or coffee cups left on the beaches or the males who duck off into the bush to relieve themselves. No one complains about the smelly seaweed or the bird droppings and the very loud children running past people kicking up sand. We often see the swimmers bare buttocks when changing behind their cars but no one complains about that.

My son and I spent many special moments riding along the beach at Dolphin Point and sharing our horses with adults and children who may never have the chance to get close enough to pat or enjoy the beauty of such magnificent animals. We teach our children to share, I just wish adults could learn to live in harmony with nature. I THINK there is more than one pig in this equation, and you probably don't need me to spell it out for you. If you were anaphylactic, would your boyfriend find it funny to suggest to his mother that honey prawns in sesame seeds was your all-time favourite? His insensitivity is astounding, and it really isn't a great start to a longterm relationship (if that's what you are looking for). You have been a good sport about this, but the subterfuge needs to end. And don't make excuses such as being on a special eating plan, or anything that will make it easier for him. Simply say to your boyfriend that you will not be attending any more family dinners until he comes clean with his parents about your eating preferences. Either that or invite them to your house and say you've been doing some research about how we should be eating more bugs, before you serve up a big plate of Chilli-lime Grasshoppers followed by Spicy Cicada popcorn and Mealworm Banoffee Pie. SIX weeks ago, I was invited to my boyfriend's parents' house for dinner. He neglected to tell them that I can't stomach pork, and to be polite I forced myself to eat it and hid little bits of it under my salad, but I somehow got through the night. STROUD’S Zoë Turner is raising funds for the MakeA-Wish foundation through a twelve hour tennis fundraiser. On 20 November Zoë will be hitting the Stroud Tennis Courts to play for twelve hours straight, including food, water and toilet breaks. The fundraiser will run from 7:30am-7:30pm with Stroud Butchery running a BBQ from 11am-12pm and 5-6pm, with all proceeds going towards Make-A-Wish Ms Turner spoke to News Of The Area about her fundraiser. “I had been thinking about doing a charity event for a while and I was looking for the right charity to raise funds for and I really wanted to do something for sick kids. “I was on the MakeA-Wish website reading children’s stories and got very emotionally attached to the charity,” she said.
