could only have four members attending due to our small shed size and as such nearly all work stopped, we had to actually close for a while to ensure

our members health and safety.” Once the Men’s Shed was allowed to open again work slowly recommenced, unfortunately attendance was fairly low, and as such the members had

to prioritise outstanding work before they could get to the lectern. “Philip, one of our newer members took on the task of building a new lectern from scratch with help and input from

various members.” A local business donated the vinyl logo that was mounted onto a separate piece of wood to make it stand out. “The aim was to supply something that will last for a very long time and I think we have been successful.

“The members really put a lot of effort into the lectern and it filled us all with a sense of pride to see what had been achieved. “Bulahdelah Central School is really over the moon with the quality of the lectern and I look forward to seeing it in use,” he said.

Men's Health Week is upon us. Monday, 14 June until 21 June 2021. That's good news for us in NSW - we start the week with a holiday! And an opportunity to reflect on some of the following. That's the importance of Men's Health Week- it is an opportunity to shine the light on the state of male health. Did you know: 1. The top 3 reasons for reduced lifespan in men are cardiovascular disease, suicide and motor vehicle accidents? 2. Only 30% of men's overall health is determined by the genetics? And as the website declares, "Having a Y-chromosome is not an excuse for unhealthy lifestyle choices." 3. Inactive men are 60% more likely to suffer from depression than those who are active?

4. Men who sleep 7 to 8 hours a night have about 60% less risk of fatal heart attack than those who sleep 5 hours or less? 5. Those who consume 4 to 10 drinks a week at most, have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes? We are each touched on a daily basis by the stories of good and bad fortune of those who are close. During this Men's Health Week, I will be reflecting on the wisdom of this brief message from someone close to me: "I now want to say to my family and friends, no matter what your age, you should get regular check-ups and bloodwork from a Dr to see how your body is doing. THE Stroud community is being urged to apply for Duralie community funding before Friday 18 June. Not-for-profit organisations and community groups in the vicinity of the Duralie Mine are invited to apply for funding between $5,000 and $50,000 for projects which will enhance community life. The funding can be for any project which will benefit local education, environment, health, infrastructure, arts, leisure and cultural heritage. Housing squeeze

By Marian SAMPSON HOUSING is increasingly hard to find, especially in Port Stephens. Kirsty Dukes is a single mother to three children; two boys and one girl. Her two boys have autism and ADHD ODD and her daughter has ADHD. Kirsty has been trying to find housing for her family, however it is increasingly difficult. Kirsty Dukes told News Of The Area, “I left a domestic violence situation and moved in with my brother and his wife.” That situation didn’t prove to be ideal for Kirsty and her family. They are now currently living at a friend’s mum’s cabin. However, this again isn’t ideal as Kirsty is driving 1hr and 30 mins to drive her children to school as she is trying to keep a routine for the children. “All the kids just want a roof over their heads, my eldest boy is turning thirteen on 16 June and all he wants is a roof over his head so we can at least have a party with his new friends.” Kirsty believes that stability and routine is key in the family's life. Housing uncertainty can cause an increase in anxiety for her and her children. Kirsty said, “I’m feeling like a complete failure to my children, I’ve got all my emails from what I’ve been applying for and it’s just rejection after rejection. “It’s ridiculous, it feels like I’m being discriminated against for being a single mother,” she said. The children also have a companion dog which Kirsty said they have had to leave at a friend's house. Kirsty’s is just one example of a family in crisis with nowhere to live. Brooke Vitnell is a local solicitor who has previously worked for The Federal

Minister for Families and Social Services as a Senior Adviser and the Federal Minister for Employment and Minister for Women. Brooke told News Of The Area, “The most common reason that women in general end up homeless is escaping a domestic violence situation or family law proceedings.” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin told News Of The Area, “The NSW Government works to provide social housing to eligible applicants as quickly as possible, prioritising those most in need, including people who are homelessness, escaping domestic violence or with severe and ongoing medical conditions. “The $1.1 billion Social and Affordable Housing Fund is delivering 3,400 new homes across NSW, including hundreds in the Hunter and Central Coast. “There is also a range of housing assistance products available including help for people to rent in the private market. “Support is available to help people

pay rent, cover rental bonds and to sustain tenancies. “One such program is Rent Choice Start Safely, which supports people escaping domestic and family violence with a subsidy that enables them to secure housing and receive support services. “Anyone who is homeless or at risk of homelessness can contact Link2home on 1800 152 152. “Support is available 24-7, every day of the year,” he said. Anne Fletcher of Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services said, “We are funded to see 348 individuals per annum in 2019-2020 we saw 444 in 2020-21 782 individuals all seeking urgent help.” There are more people out there that are couch surfing and domestic violence is the main reason for homelessness in women 25-45 aged range. “There simply aren’t enough places for those in need. “It’s very complex,” she said.

VOLUNTEERS are central to our community. When the Bulahdelah Hospital Auxiliary branch closed on February 21, many community members felt it was important to recognise the work done by these volunteers. Seven members of the auxiliary were recently treated to a luncheon at the Warung Peri restaurant. The committee was keen to give a big thank you to Neil Spencer, Bulahdelah Home Care Nurse and the Warung Peri team for this gesture of recognition for the years of service given to

our hospital. Irene Dorney and Phillis Haynes were unable to attend due to ill health but were missed on the day. It was a sad day for the auxiliary, and the Myall Coast, back in February when it was voted unanimously to close the branch. The committee felt that age, ill health and the recent changes to the Bulahdelah Community Hospital care model meant they were no longer able to assist the way they had previously. The auxiliary was formed in May 1955 to support the then Cottage Hospital. The auxiliary worked to raise money to purchase

By Tara CAMPBELL NSW Government’s Dine and Discover scheme will be extended for a month. This decision was made after learning that almost half the vouchers had not been utilised just weeks before they were due to expire.

More businesses will now be able to register, and NSW residents will have more time to apply for vouchers and get out and about. The Dine and Discover is an initiative for NSW residents over the age of eighteen, delivered in the form of four $25 vouchers for use across dining, arts and recreation businesses. These vouchers are

designed to get people out and about after the effect of COVID-19 on local businesses and companies. In March 2021, NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet unveiled the rollout, and since then approximately five million of the seventeen million vouchers have been used. “This is helping to fire up our economy.

Future Focus Learning Days ON Tuesday, 4 May and Thursday, 3 June saw Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) held Stage 3 Future Focus Learning Days. These days involved students from four Myall Learning Community schools in Tea Gardens, Booral, Bungwahl and Coolongolook attending BCS to participate

in a range of activities which focus on four technology disciplines - Food Technology, Wood Technology, STEM and Photography. Students rotated around each technology discipline throughout the day, experiencing making small projects such as a CO2 powered race car, a water

powered bottle rocket, and a small woodwork pencil holder. Students from the five participating schools spoke positively about the benefits of the day in preparation for high school. “Today was fun and showed us what things we could do in high school,” said

Council commended for drought response MIDCOAST Council’s response to the unprecedented 2019-2020 drought has been highly commended at the 2021 NSW Local Government Excellence Awards. One of 12 finalists in the category of Disaster Recovery/Emergency Response Management – Population Under 100K, MidCoast Council’s response was recognised alongside disaster resilience initiatives from Clarence Valley Council and winner Bega Valley Shire Council. A team of managers from Council’s water services were on hand to accept the award in Sydney, including Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott. He said it was pleasing to see Council’s efforts during the drought recognised among such a competitive field of finalists. “Nobody wants to experience a drought like we experienced in late 2019 and

early 2020, but it’s reassuring to see the lengths we went to during that challenging period held up as an example for other councils to follow,” said Mr Scott. “The drought response project galvanised our staff right across the organisation. We developed and delivered a plan that balanced the ongoing supply of water to our community with water conservation and continued economic activity – and we did it all while facing the worst drought on record.” The award coincides with the publication of ‘A Drought Like No Other’, MidCoast Council’s comprehensive review of its 2019-2020 drought response strategy. A 28-page illustrated document, it provides an extensive overview of how Council managed such a severe and lengthy dry spell at a time when the region was also dealing with the impacts of the ‘Black Summer’ bushfire crisis. “I’m really pleased to

Wildlife Carer Grants double in 2021 THE NSW Wildlife Council (NWC), the peak body for wildlife rehabilitation in NSW, has doubled the 20212022 grants budget to $40K for wildlife carers who play a vital role in the survival of native fauna. The NWC aims to achieve optimal outcomes for native fauna, representing 26

licensed wildlife groups and more than 3,000 wildlife carers in the state. The Rehabilitator Enclosure and Equipment Grants program acknowledges the pivotal role played not only by wildlife rehabilitators, but also by their groups. The 2020 grants assisted

Biggest Morning Tea celebrating volunteers DEAR News Of The Area, IT was Wednesday 25 May, the day for our craft groups’ Biggest Morning Tea in support of the Cancer Council, at the Hawks Nest Community Hall. The tables in their white gowns are under stress with goodies and the best china is out of hiding. The donation box is exploding. We have visiting members of three very vital local services; The Clinic Bus, The Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Services have come to join us. The men and their tea cups and pinkies look a little awkward. All these services are run by volunteers and are on the job when we most need them. They look after us and as a group; we look after them in the way of providing financial assistance.

Our crafty ladies put a lot of effort and talent into making up huge raffles prizes for Mother’s Day and Christmas. It goes without saying that the wonderful generosity of this community and the many visitors to our area makes all of this possible. A big thank you for your support. We all benefit, at some time, in the end. Wednesday craft meets from 9am till noon in the Community Hall, Hawks Nest. We do our own thing be it knitting, crocheting, embroidery and hand sewing and work on special projects together throughout the year. Help is at hand if you’re stuck or want to learn something new. The next 6 ends of this contest were won by Dorothy and Dale they accrued 7 points, Ingrid and Maynie were lucky to be the victors 15 v 13. THIS morning in the supermarket I challenged a fellow shopper on her choice of selecting caged eggs over free range. I felt some remorse afterwards as I normally mind my own business and don’t like to be rude to people, however on the other hand I feel torn as I find the cruelty these poor chickens have to endure just to save a few cents at the checkout is worth calling someone out on their choice. If we all stay silent on these cruelty issues they will continue. Was I overstepping the mark? How do you see it? Dear Liz,

HAVE you seen that advertisement on television where the little pig sings 'Somewhere' from West Side Story before it flies out of its factory farm? I tell you, that ad absolutely kills me. It brings me to tears. It is so well executed (terrible word choice) that for a moment I can imagine a world where there is no animal cruelty. Yeah, and pigs might fly, some will say. Well, in this ad, they do. It is abhorrent that supermarkets still stock eggs from caged chickens. Offering them at a cheaper rate than free-range is negligent. I agree with you that staying silent on cruelty issues will mean they continue. Perhaps the answer is to approach the supermarket's manager and ask why they are still providing an option that supports inhumane practices. Having owned chickens, I know that they each have individual personalities. They deserve room to move, a place to have dust baths, sunlight, and the ability to stretch their wings. I wonder if the caged-egg cartons had pictures of baby chickens with part of their beaks removed so they don't peck each other to death from stress, or living a life in cramped and dark conditions over a manure pit, those sunny-side-up eggs would taste as good? Education is the place to start, so no, not only were you not overstepping the mark, but you were also giving a voice to the voiceless. You're a good egg, Liz.

Shorebirds Need Seaweed By Marian SAMPSON

WE often witness seaweed washed up on our beaches, with the sight and smell leaving something to be desired. However there is new research that is calling for us to conserve coastal seaweed. University of South Australia (UniSA) ecologists are urging coastal communities to embrace all that the season brings, including the sometimes-unwelcome deposits of brown seaweed that can accumulate on the shoreline. Both Port Stephens and the Myall Coast are home to a range of shore birds. While tidal seaweed (or sea wrack) may seem unsightly – especially at beach-side tourist destinations – new research from the University of South Australia shows that it plays a vital role for many migratory seabirds and should be protected. In the UniSA study, researchers show that beach-cast seaweed provides shelter, and a range of microclimates, in addition to food, that ensure the survival of many shore-bird species. Specifically, sea wrack acts like a reverse-cycle air conditioner creating cooler conditions when

the weather is hot and warmer conditions when it is cold, helping sea birds regulate their body temperatures. UniSA researchers Tim Davis and Associate Professor Gunnar Keppel say that councils, residents and tourists must be educated about the ecological role of sea wrack and how removing it from beaches can have a significant impact on the environment and the survival of bird species. “Australian beaches are renowned for stretches of golden sand – it’s one of the main draw cards for tourists – so it’s not altogether surprising that beachside destinations tend to favour a seaweed-free coastline,” Davis said. “The challenge is, however, that while people may see beachcast sea wrack as an eye-sore, it actually has an ecological role to fulfill, particularly for migratory shorebirds. “Our research shows that sea wrack provides important microclimates to help seabirds regulate their body temperatures – they mostly forage, rest and roost in the older, dryer wrack, which is warm throughout most of the day. However, they also seek refuge among fresh wrack in the early
