Myall Lakes Dingo Project By Tara CAMPBELL THE Myall Lakes Dingo Project has launched its reporting site. After a year of planning and monitoring the area, the collaborative project between Centre for Ecosystem Science at the University of New South Wales and Taronga Conservation Society, with support from NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, are excited to reveal a dingo sighting website. Established in 2019, the project works to develop and test non-lethal tools for management of Dingoes. This site will aid in supporting coexistence with Dingoes, and will not lead to any lethal management. Dr Neil Jordan says that

the project’s aim is to help understand and protect Dingoes. “Obviously living alongside Dingoes is difficult, particularly for livestock producers and farmers at the moment. “The tools that they have at their disposal are for the most part lethal control, and so we're trying to fill this gap with a biologically relevant non-lethal tool,” he said. The project is also looking to understand the communication system of Dingoes, including how Dingoes

communicate their ownership of space and territories, particularly through the use of scent and sound. To monitor this, camera trap stations have been set up on known marking spots which are located through a National Parks and Wildlife Services’ trained scat detection dog. There are also a number of radio collar Dingoes around the area that send an update on location multiple times a day via satellite. This allows the Myall Lakes Dingo Project to track how Dingoes are ranging and when experiments take place, how this
is affected by the tools that the project is testing. “Our reporting site allows anyone to report a sighting, which is very useful for us in developing a picture of where these individuals and packs are ranging, particularly for uncollared Dingoes,” Dr Jordan said. Uncollared Dingoes are identified through markings and patterns on their coat, which are unique to each animal. The Myall Lakes Dingo Project is funded by the Hermon Slade Foundation and Taronga Zoo and works together with National Parks and Wildlife and MidCoast Council. THERE was confusion, lobbying and finally a reprieve for the 95,000 residents of the MidCoast Council area which was eventually added to the list of LGA’s that came out of lockdown over the weekend. Initially anyone from the region listening to the 11am press conference about regions being released from lockdown could have been forgiven for assuming that Midcoast Council was part of the Mid Coast region being released by the NSW Government. Sadly, this is yet another instance where
Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said he was “delighted” at the eventual decision to release the MidCoast Council area from lockdown. “Upon learning that MidCoast LGA was not scheduled to come out of lockdown, I asked the Deputy Premier to have that decision reviewed by NSW Health. “I am delighted that we have achieved the outcome I have been lobbying for. It goes to show not to give up. “Thank you to the Deputy Premier and NSW Heath for listening to our community.” Mr Bromhead said. The MidCoast LGA recorded two

Some residents of the Myall Coast are, like people in many regional areas, still waiting for access to the Pfizer vaccine. Geoff Staples of Bulahdelah has simply had enough. He has been asking his local doctor for an appointment for his handicapped son to get a Pfizer jab for months and has only just been able to secure an appointment on 28 October 2021 for the first shot which means his son won’t be fully immunised and protected until

He is seeking assurances that the regions will have ample opportunity to get Pfizer or Moderna Vaccines if that is what is recommended by the TGA before we open up. “Opening up the regions to Sydney before the community has access to all the vaccines is murder.” The new freedoms for the MidCoast include; Up to five visitors will be allowed in a home (not including children 12 and under); up to 20 people can gather in outdoor settings; venues including hospitality, retail stores and gyms can reopen with capacity limits; retail stores, hairdressers and other personal services businesses can reopen under the one person per 4sqm rule; sporting facilities including swimming pools can reopen and schools will be back with face to face learning. The cinema and other indoor entertainment and information facilities are all able to reopen with one person per 4sqm or 75 per cent fixed seated capacity. Weddings and funerals can now go ahead with 50 guests and churches and places of worship are able to reopen under the 4 sqm rule but there is no singing allowed. Movement and inter region travel is allowed within the areas not in lockdown. Masks remain mandatory for all indoor public venues, including public transport, front-of-house hospitality, retail and business premises, on planes and at airports.

To vax or not to vax – it is the question that adults have been asking themselves and each other as we move through the COVID-19 pandemic. As the population moves towards significant numbers of vaccinated adults, the attention is now turning to the younger members of our community. Children aged 12 years and up can now access the Pfizer vaccine; however for many, the decision as to whether the child is vaccinated will lie with their parents. This is a decision which is difficult enough where the parents remain in a relationship; however it becomes more complex where the parents are separated and may have different ideas as to what is best for their child. Under family law, the decision as to whether or not a child is vaccinated is one of parental responsibility. In

many cases, parents share parental responsibility equally and need to reach an agreed position. If parents cannot reach agreement, the issue can be brought before the Court. In such applications, the Judge will consider the individual circumstances for the child, including any medical issues peculiar to the child which may place them at risk; as well as the practical effect for the child if they remain unvaccinated, such as exclusion from activities and services. In the end, the Judge must apply a best interests test. Parents are encouraged to discuss this issue, and reach their own decision for their child; rather than leaving such an important issue in the hands of a stranger. MidCoast Community Strategic Plan 2030 ALL MidCoast residents are being invited to review Council’s long term community strategic plan to ensure it continues to meet changing needs and realise its vision. The MidCoast Community Strategic Plan 2030 – Shared Vision, Shared Responsibility was developed in 2018, after consultation with MidCoast locals right across our region. The plan is the community’s blueprint for the MidCoast’s future, and outlines your identified vision, priorities and actions by which we’ll achieve the vision statement of ‘we strive to be recognised as a place of unique environmental and cultural significance. Our strong community connection, coupled with our innovative development and growing economy, builds the quality of life we value’. It’s an important plan that guides Council in developing its four year delivery plans and annual operational plans – all focussed on achieving the priorities and actions that you identify in the community strategic plan. MidCoast Council’s General Manager Adrian Panuccio said, “The community
Full HSC to go ahead ALL HSC students will get the opportunity to complete their studies in 2021, with the full complement of HSC exams to go ahead from 9 November 2021. Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell today announced that students will be able to sit their HSC exams and receive their results in time for university offers to be made. The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) has issued a revised timetable, with 110 exams taking place over 19 days, ending on 3 December. Students will receive their ATARs on 20 January 2022, with their HSC results released on 24 January. Ms Mitchell said that after a disruptive and stressful year, students now have the certainty of the timetable and eight weeks to focus on preparing for their exams. “Being able to sit all their exams safely is the best and fairest outcome for our HSC students,” Ms Mitchell said. “Whether our students go on to university, vocational training or take on employment, it is important all of them are able to sit their exams and demonstrate what they know. “I know that teachers, families and friends are supporting our HSC students every step of the way, and that the whole NSW community is wishing them well after a tough 18 months.” Chair of the NESA Board Professor Peter
Shergold said that providing a fair, equitable and safe opportunity for students to receive the HSC in 2021 continues to be at the forefront of every decision made by NESA. “Revising the timetable to start on 9 November and deliver results on 24 January required the reconfiguration of a massive logistical operation involving over 100,000 people,” Professor Shergold said. “I am grateful to the NSW Vice Chancellors Committee and the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) for their support, and for working with us to deliver an outcome which will see students receive their results and their university offers in a timely way.” Strict COVID safe protocols supported by NSW Health will be in place to protect students, exam supervisors and school staff when HSC exam start on 9 November 2021. The protocols for a COVID-safe HSC require exam supervisors to be fully vaccinated and strongly encourage eligible HSC students to receive two vaccine doses before exams start. Other safety measures include: ● Mandatory face masks for students and staff, indoors and outdoors ● Check-in and health screening protocols for students and staff ● Physical distancing between students and staff at all times ● Minimising mingling of student

An illness and misadventure process is available for students who are unable to attend an exam due to having a positive COVID-19 test result, or being a close contact. 68,710 students are on track to receive the HSC in 2021, according to the HSC Enrolment Snapshot which will be released on Monday by NESA. Bee-hive yourself around bee swarms this spring By Alice HENNEN SPRING is in the air. The scent of flowers carried on the warm breeze, blue skies unlimited and endless. The sleepy buzz of bees as they busy themselves gathering pollen to turn into delicious honey. Just like humans, bees are not restricted by lockdown if they want to move house.
A bee swarm can be an alarming sight to see, especially if they alight onto a house or a car. Beekeepers urge people to not be afraid of swarming bees, as they are quite docile. Bees will gorge themselves with honey before departing, and this feast will make them sluggish and unlikely to attack. Local beekeeper Matt Black turned up to collect a
bee swarm which had fallen from a tree and onto the road recently, only to find that a local resident had poured petrol over the swarm. “I arrived to find a local resident had taken it upon himself to pour fuel onto the bees out the front of his house,” he explained in a Facebook post. “I was literally just lost for words!” If you do come across a

and Jeanette Hart, put together a team to fix up the park adjacent to the Hawks Nest Community Centre. Supported by MidCoast Council and Steve Howard, MidCoast Council’s

Community Liaison Park and Recreational Service Officer, a team of twenty volunteers worked relentlessly multiple times a week to bring the park back to life. Now, a smaller group of volunteers continue to meet weekly to weed, water and maintain the garden. After the initial stages of beautification took place, the next step was to paint a natural-looking mural on the toilet block to accentuate the park environment. Once again supported

Local beekeepers will often collect bee swarms and either relocate them, or add them to their own collection. A special vacuum cleaner is used to suck up the bees and contain them safely. by MidCoast Council, a new team, consisting of five U3A art group members began to work on the mural. Jeanette Hart, Bev Sruik, Helen Fitzgerald, Gay McKay and Sandy Flinn, took six weeks of multiple meetings a week to bring this mural to life. Through consultation with the local preschool centre, extra local animals and plants were added to the mural as an education tool for the local children. Thrilled by the progress so far, Jeanette confirms that work for the park is not yet complete, with stage three involving another smaller mural on the side of the toilet wall to begin work when COVID restrictions are lifted. Council facilities reopen MIDCOAST Council’s facilities and services were reopened on Monday, following the lifting of the NSW Government’s stay at home orders for the region. Waste management centres, customer service centres, libraries and visitor information centres opened Monday, with the Manning Regional Art Gallery following on Tuesday. For those members of the community who do not feel comfortable undertaking face-to-face interactions, they can continue to use online and phone services to do their business with Council, said Mayor David West.

ALMOST 3,000 bookings have been made at Reflections Holiday Parks across the State since the NSW Premier’s announcement on Thursday to end lockdown for parts of Regional NSW. Reflections Holiday Parks CEO Nick Baker said he was pleased to see the MidCoast LGA included in the list of NSW regional areas allowed to reopen. “The late announcement on Friday night to include the NSW Mid North Coast in the ‘exit lockdown’ list saw the phones running hot over the weekend for our parks at Jimmys Beach, Hawks Nest, Seal Rocks, Forster Beach and Tuncurry,” Mr Baker said. “These coastal parks are in stunning locations and encourage outdoor recreation and enjoyment which is something people are craving right now, “After weeks of lockdown, our park staff are run off their feet with big smiles on their faces. “The rush to our phone lines and web site to book shows that people can’t wait to get out and about and I am incredibly appreciative to see the level of trust that the public have put in our parks to provide a safe and memorable holiday, especially in this time of pandemic and Covid stress. “Covid has had a huge impact on people’s travel plans and we know that people are absolutely wanting to take this opportunity to kick back and relax with their families once again in a natural, outdoor setting.”
While the majority of Council public facilities were closed during the orders, services continued to be delivered to the community. Mayor West said he and staff were pleased to be able to welcome the community back into the facilities, with Council ready to adapt its service model again should the situation change. “We know this is a constantly evolving situation and we are ready to adapt to whatever is required of us by the NSW Government to protect our community and our staff.” Mayor West said all facilities that are
now reopened will continue to abide by their COVID safe plans and the requirements of the Public Health Order. “This includes social distancing and wearing of masks at all our indoor facilities.” Some services will be impacted by staffing arrangements, with the full list of Council facilities and their operations provided below. PORT Stephens SES volunteers are always ready to put their hands up to help not only the local community but the wider community whenever there is need. Last week saw the team join some 400 other emergency service workers and volunteers in a desperate four day search for a toddler lost in rugged terrain. Three year old Anthony 'AJ' Elfalak had simply gone missing from the family home. There were grave fears for the toddler. The dam was emptied. Thoughts turned to
William Tyrell who went missing in 2014 - who has still not been found. Throughout the tough search members of Port Stephen SES Charlie 9 team were led by Greg ‘Bluey’ Chalmers. Bluey told News Of The Area, “On the Saturday night I was with a young group of SES volunteers guiding them through the search and process. “It was wet, we were in the middle of nowhere and I said ‘let’s have a break have some water’. “We turned off the lights, it was so quiet and I said to the team, ‘Can you imagine

Bluey carried the exhausted child back to the base camp and his mother - AJ clutching his shirt all the way. “It was a fantastic outcome.” Bluey is proud of his team and his 10 years of service in the SES. “The SES is not for guys looking for glory, fame and fortune, the SES is for giving back to the community.” They are there after storms helping people when all their belongings are destroyed. “The greatest thing you can do is to help to protect them and help them any way you can…” The SES is made up of a diverse set of individuals with a vast range of skills from paramedics and professors to retired engineers and tradies.
Firefighting capability improved THE Federal Government has announced it will fund the leasing of a Large Air Tanker to boost aerial firefighting muscle this fire season. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the extra resourcing was important as the Bushfire Danger Period was already in place across a number of local government areas, as of 1 September 2021. “As individuals and communities we need to be ready to respond to fires, and we’re all too aware of this in our local region,” Dr Gillespie said.
“Our Government has committed an annual $4 million to lease this aircraft, because of the earlier starting and later finishing fire seasons. “With a capability to drop more than 15,000 litres of retardant or water, this air tanker will be deployed very quickly, based on need.” Dr Gillespie said firefighting aircraft were now a very visible feature of firefighting operations each season. “It’s an extra comfort to know we will have yearround access to a Large Air

Tanker, in addition to an existing fleet of more than 150 specialised aircraft, to protect our communities. “There have been widespread hazard reduction burns across our region in recent weeks,” Dr Gillespie said. “If the fire season is already underway in your council area, you need a permit and you need to notify your local fire authority and your neighbours 24 hours before lighting up. “If a fire does escape, make sure you call Triple Zero (000) immediately.”

Well being movement ‘Man Anchor’ is a proud partner within Surfing NSW’s ‘Surfing Mental Health 360’ project. Yet Bluey knows that without boots on the ground it would not have been possible. Bluey believes if he can make a difference to one life through his service with the SES it will be worth it. This week Bluey and Charlie 9 made a very big difference.

Stroud Preschool spreads joy By Tara CAMPBELL STROUD’S youngest community members are spreading joy and love to the community. It’s no surprise that COVID-19 has affected our communities, however, many fail to consider social distancing, lockdowns and a pandemic’s impact on the youngest members of our community. Instead of focusing on the negatives, the educators and children in attendance at Stroud Preschool took to making posters and signs to cheer up the community. Stroud Preschool educator Zoë Tolhurst told News Of The Area about the current situation at the preschool. “Preschool has been tough for the children; either not being able to attend and not being able to see friends or attending but not seeing all
their friends. “For a preschooler it is hard to fully understand what is actually going on around them,” Zoë said. As a way of expressing this, the children of the preschool decided to make posters for the community. “We spoke to the children about what they missed, what they wanted to say or draw

COUNCIL is currently engaged in court proceedings concerning an appeal over Councils refusal to grant consent for a residential flat building at Yamba St, Hawks Nest. The matter was heard from 6-9 September. The development proposal is for a residential flat building comprising 29 units of five storeys and for the dedication of land for the purpose of a public reserve. The original application attracted significant comment from the community. During the court process the applicant amended the plans reducing the height and scale and increasing the setback from Booner Street. Over 100 submissions were received from the amended plans and the submissions will be considered by the commissioner when determining the matter.

Because the applicant, during the court process, made substantial amendments and attempted to address the contentions raised by Council and the community. it is difficult for Council to oppose development outright given that the amended development is permissible and generally complies with the development control plans. This means that instead of the usual court case where there is a fight over the permissibility of the development, the parties have agreed that the development is suitable subject to conditions. However, the applicant challenges those conditions and those conditions are the centre of the dispute. The conditions are now a matter for the commissioner to determine. He has heard representations from the local community and will also consider submissions received and whether such objections warrant refusal of the development or whether it should be approved with conditions.

MidCoast Council Awarded $40,000 for a scoping study for Great Lakes, Karuah and Khappinghat estuaries, and $31,600 to review the current framework for management of Jimmy’s Beach. This is good news as it means the sand transfer system and how it is working at Jimmy’s Beach will be subject to review to ensure best practice is happening. It should also examine the frequency of dredging. The announcement has just been made so I do not have all the details yet.

COVID-19 has knocked all manner of sporting events off the calendar and surfing is no exception. Cancellation of sports and social activities has impacted many people's mental health. Surfing NSW announced a series of new mental health programs for the NSW surfing community on R U OK? Day. The new programs will be rolled out through the Surfing Mental Health 360 platform and will have touchpoints up and down the NSW coastline, as well as online.
