TWO women have been confronted by a pack of dingoes on Jimmy’s Beach on an evening walk with their dog. The pack of wild dogs in the area have grown increasingly fearless after being fed by visitors at the nearby caravan park. This ongoing problem has previously resulted in the euthanasia of one dingo which snatched a backpack from sunbathing tourists in 2015. But the dingoes have now become so fearless that when Courtney Webb and her mother Jann took their dog for a walk on a Tuesday evening, four dingoes approached, with teeth bared. Only 100m from the

They gradually retreated back into the dunes but followed close behind as the women took their dog back towards the track. Courtney believes that “feeding the dingoes has created this problem, and while they have always been curious, this time they seemed unafraid of humans.” “We have reported the incident to the police, the council and Jimmys Beach Caravan Park,” she said. The police will now take the report to NSW National Parks who will put up more signage to deter visitors from feeding the wild dogs.

Skatepark Finally Rolling Along After Long Delays q

By Samuel BARTLETT LONG awaited plans to build a new skatepark at Alum Mountain Park in Bulahdelah are finally coming to a close. The ‘sub-standard’ skatepark in town has finally been superseded by the new smooth polished concrete park, with only landscaping surrounding the vegetation to be completed. The monumental construction of the park is thanks to the generous donation of the Bulahdelah Lions Club, which raised $181,000 to renovate the space. Midcoast Council also spent $79,000 on the project which has been more than two years in the making. In the creation process, young people became the driving force behind the design of the park to come up with a plan which will fit all skating abilities. Construction of the new park got underway in February and was expected to

be completed in eight to ten weeks, but was halted twice by COVID-19 border closures with Queensland. The new park now replaces the old showground park which sports cracks and

loose unsealed concrete. Local skater Matthew Samiri said as he rolled onto the park for the first time, “this is so much better.” The unfinished landscaping will resume

Free grant writing workshops for MidCoast ACCESSING grants can provide big boosts for community groups, event organisers and businesses and provide long lasting benefits for MidCoast communities. Free workshops across the MidCoast in February and March are designed to help groups and businesses write winning grant applications. “Sometimes community organisations and businesses may

overlook the opportunity to apply for grants, and a grant can really kickstart a project, or help bring a dream to life much quicker than would be possible otherwise,” said Council’s Manager of Growth, Economic Development and Tourism, Deb Tuckerman. “If your group or business could benefit from a grant, book in now for a free concise and informative workshop to improve your chances of receiving a financial boost to complete a

project.” “Writing grant applications in most cases involves a lot of hard work. Attending the workshops will really help our local groups to focus attention on what is important and give themselves every chance of being successful.” The workshops will assist participants to identify funding opportunities, learn terms and jargon specific to grant applications, and provide some tips to

help you hone your ideas to produce a winning application. Kerry Grace from regionally-based business, the Evolve Network, will lead the workshops, with a focus on working alongside regional communities, not for profits, councils, Aboriginal Corporations and community groups, to create positive outcomes for the MidCoast community. “We’re hoping that community groups and

businesses, including those that were impacted by drought and bushfires, will see the value and opportunity that attending a grant workshop can bring to their projects,” said Deb Tuckerman. Workshops will be held across the region, kicking off in Wingham on Wednesday 3, Gloucester on Thursday 4, Tea Gardens on Friday 5 February and Elands on Monday 1 March. There will be a choice of day or evening workshops

offered in Forster on 2 and 3 March and Taree on 3 and 4 March. Subsequently, the first U3A was formed under the auspices of Cambridge University, United Kingdom, in 1982. The first Australian U3A also commenced in 1982. The Myall U3A was constituted in 1993 under the auspices of the University of Newcastle. THE Little Tern breeding season is now in full swing with progeny present at every stage from eggs, chicks through to fledged juveniles, over three sites on Corrie Island and Winda Woppa beach. There has been combined effort, mainly from NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s Save our Species(SoS) program, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Mid Coast Council, Hunter Bird Observers Club and Myall Koala and Environment Group, to secure, protect and monitor the endangered beach-nesting birds. Some Little Tern ignored our plea to resist nesting on the dredgespoil mound, so fencing and signage was put in place at the eleventh hour, once a nest had been run over by a wayward 4wd! The overwhelming positive response, aside from one instance of sign and fence vandalism, from the beach-

going public and their pets, has been most heartening. So many people are reading and adhering to the in situ signs and brochures around Hawks Nest, and generally taking an interest in the progress of bird activities at this important time of year. Pied Oystercatchers are also endangered shorebirds, and the natural conditions in Port Stephens result in this area being an important feeding and breeding ground for a significant percentage of the world population of this species. This year one Pied Oystercatcher pair have successfully raised one chick at Winda Woppa, while at least two others have tried on Corrie

Island. The next month will be a crucial time for Little Tern chicks surviving and growing to fledgling stage, as the success of the season is reflected in the total number of flying juveniles. We thank the public for respecting the areas indicated for nesting, but note that the growing chicks could be anywhere outside the fenced area so please watch where you step and limit your time near the fenced area. Adults will not come near and feed the chicks while there are humans around!

Plans to Hawks Nest expand Golf Club By Tara CAMPBELL

THE Midcoast Council has announced a proposal to expand the Hawks Nest Golf Club and is reaching out to the community for residents’ opinions. The proposal seeks to relocate the club to an area located on Sanderling Avenue at Hawks Nest, to the immediate east of the car park and clubhouse. It will change the zoning from RE1 Public Recreation to R3 Medium Density Residential, alter the maximum allowable height of buildings from 8.5m to 12m, and place a minimum lot size for subdivision on the land of 1000m2. The expansion also includes a plan to provide over 100 apartments. The proposal includes the implementation of various measures to support the recovery and long-term management of the Hawks Nest/ Tea Gardens koala population. It will also help establish and improve a variety of local walks and provide assistance to the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club. This proposal has been met with conflicting opinions. A member of a local community group said, “Because the apartments will be the only structures, other than the surf club, visible from the beach, it will be a visual eyesore for visitors to this important

tourist locality. “Bennetts Beach, stretching from Yacaaba to Dark Point, is a scenic wonder of unspoilt wild NSW coastline that must not be ruined by inappropriate development.” Contrastingly, another member of the community, Greg Smith, approached the development from a view to support small businesses.

“Hawks Nest is a destination that has been part of my family for 30 years. “We go up there and one year we will go to a restaurant and the next year it will be gone, and that’s truly sad. “With the huge increase in visitors over the past few months, I believe expansion is a way forward whilst we can support our local businesses, now that there is an

DAMIAN ‘Wildman’ Duffy has been everywhere, from the Northern Territory to Cairns then the red centre and back again, his spontaneity has led him even across the globe photographing wildlife and filming documentaries. More recently, Wildman has been staying at the Myall Shores on a short term contract running family activities, nature walks and exploring throughout the national park. A nature enthusiast, he said this region is home to so much wildlife he can’t wait to see it all. After finishing his documentary with life long friend Matt Hoffmann in South America, they both returned to Australia and the iron curtain of COVID-19 fell, halting many of their plans. “I want to share Australia’s wildlife not just with Aussies but with the whole world,” he told me as we cruised down Mungo Brush road. “There’s so much just in the Myall region that people don’t even know about. NSW’s tallest tree, The Grandis, is right around here,” he told me. We drove along listening to country music as I asked him more about his past and future plans and passion for conserving the environment. “I’ve seen areas smashed, really taken for granted, but this isn't one of those places,” he replied. “The people here really respect nature and look after it.” The Wildman continued, “If i had a message for people here: good work, keep it that way!” As for further travels, Damian is set on

DURING the 2020 lockdown of covid Bridge lessons from beginners onwards were presented by Leslie Falla on behalf of HNBC and proved very encouraging for new bridge players as well as existing players who wanted to learn more about this amazing game. IT was a day of strong results in rough seas for Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club teams on Saturday, for Round 5 of the Streets Surf Boat Series at Nobbys Beach. Club members took out first place in the Junior Boys category, while the Opens teams came second and fourth. The Club’s Reserve Crew walked away with a first, second and third in testing conditions. Unfortunately the girls competition was called off due to the dangerous ocean conditions. Competition will

6 January HAPPY New Year to all bowlers and it was that way when the grey skies cleared to allow two games of 18 end two-bowl Triples to be played today. Fifty-two players were not daunted by the overcast conditions and it was a welcome number to kick off 2021. The winners today with 28 points on a 2-end countback were Graham Reynolds, Mark Nightingale and Dennis Longman. The other winners on 21 points were Lance Atkins, Ron Green and Greg Pearson. The same names are coming up weekly so some creative thinking from the match committee will have to come into play. The voucher went to Mark Hair and our thanks to the Country Club for their support.

9 January No time was lost in commencing the Club competitions year with the first two matches of the Club Championship Fours played today. With intermittent showers falling, Peter Gurney, Ross Barry, Danny Johnson and John Parkinson took on the formidable Chris Ross, Denis Ashbridge, Scott Fitzalan and Jessie Henry in the first game and Barry Goode, Graham Reynolds, Mark Nightingale and Dennis Longman played Greg Smith, Jeff Baker, Greg Pearson and Stu Dorahy in the second. The Jessie Henry four were dominant in their game running out 25-15 winners and a similar result occurred in the second with the Stu Dorahy combination running away to record an easy win 37-13. 10 January. The first real day of summer, with no rain and sunny skies, made for perfect

conditions and saw the Jessie Henry side taking on Bob Peady, Ron Rowe, John Yabsley and Doug Naylor.
