getting ready to do it all again. Peter says you learn a lot about life in the oncology suite. Following a shock cancer diagnosis last year, Peter was forced to spend a lot of time at the Lake Macquarie Hospital – and it led to an emotional realisation. “When you have to spend four hours with chemotherapy and immunotherapy getting pumped into your arm, you have a lot of time to reflect,” said Peter. “I noticed that so many other patients were doing it really tough.” While coming to grips with the gravity of his own diagnosis – there is currently no cure for mesothelioma – Peter began thinking about the many young children

who were going through the same kind of treatment. “I was 77 at the time, and a lot of these kids may not even make seven,” Peter said. “They are scared and traumatised, and doing it heaps tougher than me.” When Peter saw a Facebook post about the Starlight Foundation’s Tour de Kids, it was almost fateful. Still in the depths of his cancer treatment but fuelled by a want to help those he had encountered in the oncology suite, Peter was up for the challenge. “I committed to ride my pushbike 200 kilometres in one month, and raise $500 in donations,” said Peter. “I spoke to some of my fellow bike riding friends here at Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens, and several of them volunteered

Finding Missing Persons Using Texts and Geo Locations By Marian SAMPSON THERE is a new way that NSW Police and Crime Stoppers are reaching out to find missing persons sooner rather than later. People go missing for a range of reasons. Police are still looking for Pindimar local Allan Bentley. Police are appealing for assistance to locate a man missing in the state's Hunter region. Allan Bentley, aged 63, was last seen about 12pm on Monday 26 April 2021 in the Tea Gardens area. He was reported missing to officers from Port Stephens Hunter Police District, who commenced an investigation into his

Police are concerned for his welfare after he failed to attend pre-arranged appointments and his regular game of lawn bowls on Saturday 1 May 2021, at a bowling club on Old Maitland Road at Hexham, which was considered out of character. Allan is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 179cm tall, of medium build with short brown and grey hair and a beard. It is believed he may be driving a white coloured Holden combo van, with NSW registration UQG-146, which has "catering" written on the side. There is an obligation on parties to disclose all relevant information about their superannuation entitlements for consideration in family law property settlements. When the name of a spouse's fund is known, a confidential application seeking relevant information about the member spouse's entitlement and its value can be made to the fund trustee by either the member or their spouse. Sometimes however spouses forget the whereabouts of their superannuation entitlements or deliberately avoid giving disclosure. The Government recently released for consultation an exposure draft legislation and explanatory material that amends the Taxation Administration Act 1953 and the Family Law Act 1975. Its purpose is to facilitate the identification and value of superannuation assets by parties to family law proceedings and leverage information held by the Australian Tax Office (ATO). Unfortunately, the process will

not be available for those matters where court proceedings have not yet been commenced. The exposure draft legislation provides for a party to family law property proceedings in the Family Court of Australia, Federal Circuit Court of Australia and Family Court of Western Australia to apply to the court to request information about the identity and value of their former partner’s superannuation assets from the ATO. The exposure draft legislation will also authorise the ATO to disclose this superannuation information to court registry staff for the purpose of relevant family law proceedings. The new information-sharing process should make it harder for parties to hide or under-disclose their superannuation assets in family law proceedings, and hopefully reduce the time, cost and complexity for parties seeking accurate superannuation. Help For School Leavers Facing Uncertainty Due To Pandemic By Marian SAMPSON

THE pandemic has created a new level of uncertainty for school leavers. The HSC trial dates have now changed and this cohort of students are experiencing their second year of “It’s school, but not as we know it”. Australian high school students and their families are now being invited to make use of the free School Leavers Information Service to help them understand their future career options. It is aimed at helping Australia’s next generation understand their options when it comes to getting started in their careers whether through further study, upskilling or going straight into the workforce. The Enhanced Support for School Leavers program will reach over half-amillion senior secondary students at more than 3,000 schools across the country. Targeted at supporting the cohort of students who are in their final phase of schooling the effort will see Year 11 and 12 students, and selected Year 10 students, receive information connecting them to best-practice career advice. The School Leavers Information Service, delivered through the National Careers Institute (NCI), offers free and personalised one-on-one support through a career practitioner to help a school leaver understand the next steps they should take to reach their aspirations. Since the service was launched in October 2020 hundreds of students have booked personalised guidance sessions

with the National Careers Institute’s Career Practitioners. There have been over 67,500 page views of the school leavers web page and over 15,600 downloads of the School Leavers Information Kit. There has also been over 7,400 engagements with the School Leavers Information Service. Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business, Stuart Robert, said the Enhanced Support for School Leavers program was a simple way to get younger Australians connected to basic information they might need to make decisions about education, training and work pathways. “As younger Australians reach the end of their schooling the world of work can be pretty daunting and knowing what choices to make when it comes to those next steps can be really challenging. “We get that and that is what this effort is all about, connecting younger Australians and their families with a bit of guidance,” Minister Robert said. Assistant Minister for Youth and Employment Services, Luke Howarth said he encouraged all young Australians to stay busy, connect with mentors and network when considering their future career options. “If you are taking a gap year or if you are studying, do work experience, work parttime or travel to a region, this can really help shape-up a resume,” he said. There are also tools provided through the National Careers Institute that can help.

Police urge vigilance to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Regional NSW THE NSW Police Force is urging everyone in Regional NSW to maintain vigilance and compliance with Public Health Orders to prevent COVID-19 from spreading into their communities. Officers from Police Districts across NSW are conducting high-visibility operations to support the community in ensuring compliance with the Public Health Orders and responding to reports of breaches. Deputy Commissioner Mick Willing, Regional NSW Field Operations, said policing operations will be bolstered as required to protect regional and remote communities. “The communities of Regional NSW have been doing a great job to keep the virus out of their areas, and we need to keep up that good work; now is not the time for complacency,” Deputy Commissioner Willing said. “It’s more important than ever that we fully comply with the Public Health Orders – and report breaches, especially

relating to visitors from any of the areas subject to stay-athome orders. “In recent days, NSW Health identified high levels of virus fragments were detected in sewerage in a number of major regional centres, including Armidale, Coffs Harbour, Dubbo, and Mudgee. “These alerts are of concern, as we know in Armidale, positive cases have since been confirmed.” With stay-at-home orders currently in place for the Hunter Region and Armidale and Guyra areas, Deputy Commissioner Willing urged those communities to do their bit through compliance. “The Public Health Orders have been introduced for the health and safety of everyone, and while there is a significant police presence, our officers would prefer to not issue fines,” Deputy Commissioner Willing said. “The message is pretty simple: if you don’t need to leave the house, stay home!

“If you’re heading out for an essential reason, please remember to put on a mask, maintain physical distance and check-in to all retail and business premises you visit. “Regional communities are renowned for rolling their sleeves up and getting a job done, and just as they did in the Central West, I have no doubt the Hunter and Armidale communities will do what they have to do to eliminate COVID-19 from their areas.” Various restrictions also remain in place across NSW, which are critical for preventing the spread of COVID-19. “Regional NSW is the lifeblood of the state, and we all just need to keep doing the right thing so we can keep everything moving,” Deputy Commissioner Willing said. “Further, the Delta variant poses a significant risk to our most vulnerable communities, and we cannot allow it to spread any further into the regions or our remote

areas. “It only takes one person doing the wrong thing to spread the virus – and it’s encouraging for police to continue to have the community’s support through the reporting of this type of selfish behaviour. “I implore all regional communities to do what they do best in difficult circumstances – band together and support each other. “The key to stopping the spread of the virus and saving lives is working together.” Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott praised the vigilance and efforts of our communities in Regional NSW. “I thank our communities in Regional NSW for their cooperation during this time, and they should know that the police are working around the clock to support them and their loved ones” “I urge everyone in Regional NSW to work with

Pay-free pay phones Go Local First By Tara CAMPBELL TELSTRA Payphones are now free phones for all calls in Australia. In a recent act from the company, more than 15,000 payphones across the country will now be free of use for all national calls, with international calls still being at the user’s cost. For texts or calls up to six hours to fixed-line or mobile numbers, there will be no cost. Although most of the country may not have used a payphone for many years, Telstra Corp believes that this change will benefit some of the country’s most vulnerable members of society. According to Telstra, the public nature of pay phones is still essential particularly in regional and remote communities. “Last year alone, Australians made eleven million calls on pay phones, including more than 230,000 calls to vital services like Triple Zero. “During COVID-related lockdowns, we’ve seen domestic and family violence agencies report a 60 percent rise in new clients seeking help for the first time and we know that it’s not easy for people in these situations to use a home phone or mobile to get help.

This change is set to cost Telstra approximately five million dollars a year in lost revenue, however Mr Penn believes that the benefit to the community is far more essential. “They are an iconic and critical part of our community, and for many Australians, the availability of a payphone is a vital lifeline, especially for those who are vulnerable

including the homeless, people who are isolated or someone escaping an unsafe situation. “That’s why I have taken this decision to make national calls from payphones free, because they play such a critical role in our community particularly in times of need and for those in need,” Mr Penn said. This move comes after Telstra’s trial of pay-free pay phones in remote Indigenous communities and areas impacted by natural disasters in the previous two years.

MYALL Coast residents are being urged to continue to spend with local businesses as the GO LOCAL FIRST campaign returned to the airwaves on Sunday, with an initial focus on supporting small businesses affected by lockdowns. GO LOCAL FIRST will highlight the crucial role small business plays in the nation’s economy and the continued need for Australians to GO LOCAL FIRST to support those small businesses as the Delta variant of COVID-19 wreaks havoc with the ability of small businesses to keep trading. GO LOCAL FIRST spokesperson Mark McKenzie said, “Small businesses account for just over onethird of Australia’s GDP and a full economic recovery will not be possible without small businesses trading and providing jobs for their community. “Far more jobs have been lost from small businesses than large during lockdowns – and that was before the significant downturn in activity we are seeing in parts of the country affected by the Delta variant of COVID-19.” GO LOCAL FIRST will build on its success in encouraging Australians to choose local small businesses, in a COVID-safe way, when buying products and services to support local jobs in every community.

THIS is such an important question to consider when you’re renovating to sell. Overcapitalising means that with your renovations, you have improved your property beyond its resale value - aka you’ve spent too much! Firstly understand the current market value of your property by securing an appraisal from a registered real estate agent. Compare the current market appraisal against what you paid for the property. I TAKE no comfort from the message in last week’s Myall Coast News Of The Area about the ease of Doing Business With Council At Home (p3). During the 10 years I served on the Committee of the Myall U3A, and now well into 15 years as Music Director of the Myall U3A Choir, there was a time that I could walk into the (Council’s) Tea Gardens Office when I needed to either book the Hawks Nest Community Hall or alter a booking and 5 minutes later know that all was finalized.

'Short cut' snaps DEAR News Of The Area,

HERE we have photos of the ‘Short cut’ taken by Leon Katz at low tide on 7 August 2021. The water is still very discoloured, and it is interesting to see the build up of sand between the ballast wall and Corrie Island. At this rate that channel will be totally blocked, resulting in increased flow through the natural channel. Will be interesting to see if the coffee rock on Corrie Island will again be covered, which should be a plus for the bird twitchers and a

return to the original Ramsar condition of the Island. It would seem the stockpile of sand will need replenishing in the near future and these shots will hopefully allow Council to plan the next dredging campaign. When I recently needed to do this it took some weeks of unanswered emails and phone calls and I had come to the conclusion that the only way that I could resolve our need was to drive the 100km to Taree and camp in the vestibule until the person now responsible for this could be tracked down. Initially nobody seemed to be aware that Myall U3A has a long standing Rental Licence Agreement with the Council and as the greatest user of the Community Hall pays a substantial rent each year. We are now trying to discover exactly what is planned for the replacement of the

Old Library and extensions to the Community Hall. The plans are not available on the Council Website. The initial plans which were discussed with us were agreed as being unsuitable as we gained no additional space in the new facility and lost 2m for the length of the supper room. Can I please ask that these plans be made available to those organisations which regularly use the Hawks Nest Community Hall and Old Library so that we can comment on their fit for purpose.

COVID Testing – Sewage Treatment Plants (STP)

We have been involved in the COVID testing of sewage since the pilot program started in 2020. At present, weekly sampling is being done at both Dawson (Taree) and Forster STP’s with no known positive results to date. These are the main areas of focus given the interstate trucking routes and high visitor/ tourist numbers. Whilst other plants like Hallidays Point and Hawks Nest are involved, they are not considered a concern and therefore not tested as frequently. With the developments this week it is possible that this frequency will change. We are ready to support NSW Health with this and any other assistance that they require. Samples are collected by our staff and sent to Sydney for testing as part of the state-wide program coordinated and run by NSW Health. It is not a cost or burden to council. The decisions around which sites are tested and how often, is made by NSW Health in line with the physical capacity to complete testing of the samples from around the state. An infected person can shed virus in their faeces even if they do not have any symptoms, and shedding can continue for several weeks after they are no longer infectious. There are several different situations that could be occurring when fragments of the SARS-CoV-2 virus are found in the sewage. It could mean there has been one or more people who are infectious with COVID-19 in the catchment area. It could also mean that there has been one or more people in the catchment area who have recently recovered and are no longer infectious. People who are recently recovered from COVID-19 can sometimes continue to shed virus fragments into the sewerage system for several weeks even after they are no longer infectious. It could also mean that a person with COVID-19 might have visited the community and has since left the area.

Created and co-written by Matt Lucas (Five Bedrooms) and directed by Emma Freeman (Puberty Blues), the biting and moving six-episode miniseries premieres tonight. Anna Torv (Fringe, pictured) is uncompromising newsreader Helen, who struggles to be taken seriously by her superiors. Just before a tumultuous set of events, including the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger and the Russell Street bombing, she ﬁnds herself paired with a new co-anchor: inexperienced, ambitious newcomer Dale (Sam Reid, Lambs of God). William McInnes stars as the power-hungry heads of news.

There are few shows that can settle in comfortably anywhere. When it comes to the singing juggernaut The Voice, fans will follow wherever it wanders, and so will the stars. At its new home on Seven, the mega reality TV show has hardly needed to ﬁnd its groove. THE recent outbreak of COVID-19 in Port Stephens and the Hunter, has brought the virus far too close to home for those living on the Myall Coast. It is a threat that has insidiously crept closer to the region since fragments of the virus were detected in sewage in Newcastle last week. The mobility of the workforce and the

demographics of the population means that adherence to the rules to stop the spread of COVID-19 Delta strain is imperative across the region. For people working outside the Midcoast LGA or those who have travelled into Port Stephens, Dungog, Muswellbrook, Singleton, Newcastle, Cessnock and Lake Macquarie local government areas since July 31, you too are subject to the same lockdown conditions

as Greater Sydney. MidCoast Council facilities at Tea Gardens, Stroud and Gloucester have been impacted and Council will continue to monitor the situation as it progresses. Customer service points at Tea Gardens and Stroud were propmptly closed, along with Stroud Library. The Gloucester Waste Management Facility was closed and was expected to reopen Tuesday 10 August. By Marian SAMPSON AGE care workers have long been overworked and are one group of workers that are under the pump constantly. Their jobs aren’t glamorous. They get their hands dirty and are often the only people that some aged care residents see. They also deliver quality time and care to some of our oldest and most vulnerable residents. The Myall and Port Stephens region is one of the oldest populations in the State and as such has many residents in care facilities or in care at home. Age care workers work with people with dementia, mobility concerns and a range of other health issues. On Aged Care Employee Day (August 7), Dementia Australia acknowledges the hundreds of thousands of people working in the industry across Australia. Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe said the day is an opportunity to acknowledge, honour and celebrate aged care employees.

Council’s Disability Inclusion Amendments made to Action Plan development development proposal begins THE development of the next version of the Disability Inclusion Action plan will support MidCoast Council’s commitment to creating more inclusive communities. Preliminary consultation with the MidCoast community is underway with the first of a series of Disability Inclusion Action Plan surveys now live. “The Disability Inclusion Action Plan helps us to identify the barriers and

She was also concerned about access to the premises being underground, as this would potentially prevent vehicles with items on roof

racks from being able to access the underground parking, meaning they would then have to park on the street and increase traffic congestion. MidCoast Council received more than 150 submissions from the public, before the closing date on 29 July. These submissions outlined concerns about how the new development would impact upon the bushland and would overshadow neighbouring properties, as well as increase traffic around the area.

AMENDMENTS have been made to a key Hawks Nest development proposal, which could see existing properties being overshadowed by high rise apartments. The proposal for a multiunit residential development on the corner of Yamba and Booner streets has been changed to allow 30 apartments, one more than the previous submission of 29 apartments. THE Tea Gardens Hawks have endured a horror season in 2021 and will finish at the bottom of the ladder for the first time in recent memory. A lack of players through injury and availability throughout the year has been a major factor. This was exacerbated by loss of two key players in a judiciary decision after a controversial game against Hinton in round 6. The team also endured 10 weeks playing away due to a season draw issue. Ironically, after being given the final three games at home, the COVID lockdown has impacted on the last two games. Round 15 was cancelled, and the likelihood (at the time of printing) of playing round 16 is slim. A number of positives have come out of the season. A core of young players

have stuck together to fly the flag in adversity. Seven players have turned out from the 2019 Myall River 17’s team. Playing with limited reserves, the side has competed against much more experienced sides in the early stages of all games. Greg Tassell urged a “give me the first twenty” call to motivate the players. Experienced A grade player, Brenden Robinson has mentored the younger players this year, and has indicated his intention to be part of the Club next season. The Hawks have also unearthed a natural leader in Jyson Wolfram. Wolfram’s passion has lifted the side throughout. The Cotterill and Sinclair brothers have not taken a backward step. Bryce Saunders has lifted his game over the season. Riley Hunter has adapted

RSL Pairs Trophy Day By Lynda RICHARDS

TUESDAY 3 July: RSL Pairs Trophy Day, this is an annual event sponsored by Tea Gardens RSL Sub Branch, many thanks to them for their continuing support and sponsorship of this event. Teams/games are selected by a random draw, three bowls Pairs with three games bowled each six ends. There were fourteen teams and three teams won all three of their games, gaining six points. The winners were decided on the number of ends won. Sheila Rattray and Bette Saillard came in first winning 11 ends, well done. The Runners Up were Jean Glover and Lynda Richards winning 10 ends as did Pam Gilchrist and Robyn Beaumont but Jean and Lynda had a higher winner margin 14 v 6. The encouragement award (by drawing a card) went to Dawn Jones and Irene Roberts. A fun day enjoyed by all. Thursday 5 July: Two games of

Sheila Rattray, Robyn Webster and Lyn Nightingale were losing by seven shots on the 5th end, 7 v 0 competing against Bev Rhodes, Sandra Leisemann and Loretta Baker. I’m not sure if it was the changing of positions but by the 10th end they had hit the lead by 1 shot 10 v 9, ultimately winning 13 v 9. Pam Gilchrist, Jean Glover and Maynie Roberts led all the way, defeating Bette Saillard, Judi Polak and Jill McBride by 9 shots 14 v 5. Due to the COVID crisis NDWBA have cancelled District Versatility which was to be held on the 20 August and The Spring Carnival scheduled for the 9 September. Coming events: Round 1 of the Club Triples has been postponed, will now commence Tuesday 17 August, hopefully.
