Fighting the Charge ROBERTS: “...and I expect to be exonerated.” By Margie TIERNEY LOCAL Aboriginal Land Council Chief Executive Len Roberts was last week charged with assault following an incident at the Land Council’s headquarters in Karuah. News Of The Area spoke to Mr Roberts after the incident. The charge stems from a dispute over the relocation of the Land Council Headquarters from Karuah to Tea Gardens. Police were called on Tuesday 24 July to the Karuah Aboriginal Mission when Mr Roberts reportedly attempted to take items from the Karuah office to Tea Gardens. Mr Roberts was charged with assault following an alleged altercation with a member of the Land Council. Mr Roberts told News Of The Area, “The allegations

are false and we (I) have very strong evidence to counter the accusations.” The Land Council’s Board previously approved the office’s relocation to Tea Gardens, however, members voted prior to the incident which led to Mr Roberts arrest, to overturn the decision. Mr Roberts told News Of The Area, “We (I) will be fighting the charge most vigorously and I expect to be exonerated.” The matter is expected to go to court early next month. It has also been reported that NSW Aboriginal Land Council registrar Nicole Courtman has been requested to help resolve a dispute within the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council over the relocation of the group’s administration headquarters.

AFTER six years in the planning, it seemed only fitting that there should be an official unveiling of the Myall Coast Community’s ‘Gateway Welcome’ sign which now sits proudly adjacent to the M1 turnoff. Rotary member and Gateway Project Director, Ian Mackenzie-Smith paid tribute to local community individuals and organisations for their help and support. “It was wonderful to have the enthusiasm and encouragement of so many of our fellow Myall Coast citizens.” he said. “Without their support, the project might still be only a dream.” It’s certainly been a long hard road from inception to completion of the sign which welcomes visitors to the Myall Coast

Yvonne was presented with the 2018 Port Stephens Local Achievement Award for her dedication to the local community including her many years of service with Meals On Wheels. ‘It’s lovely, but I don’t do volunteer work to get accolades: I do it because it gets me out of the house and you meet so many people,” Yvonne said. “Yvonne cooks for us, she delivers for us, she’s amazing,” Dan Holmes told News Of The Area. Along with her years of service for Meals On Wheels, Yvonne is a member of the Red Cross, spends a day a week with a dementia support group, helps out with breakfast at the Tea Gardens Primary School and in her spare time at the weekends she’s a Knight’s Nanna. “We’re just a group of widows who love their footie.”
Yvonne is such a keen supporter of the Knights Rugby League team. She’s even travelled by train to Melbourne to see her much loved Newcastle side. Along with Yvonne the other volunteers at Meals On Wheels in Hawks Nest, cook and deliver around 1,200 meals every month to clients in an area from Bulahdelah to Karuah and all points in between. Every meal is designed to be nutritious, delicious and comes with a smile to a client that may not see anyone else in their day. Volunteers are always needed at Meals on Wheels so if you can spare some time call 4997 0800, and there is someone in the office behind the Hawks Nest Community Centre every day but Tuesday between the hours of 8.30am and 2.30pm.

AFTER selling countless newspapers, gifts and prizewinning Lotto and lottery tickets over the years, Bulahdelah Newsagent Sue Chick has retired. Handing over the reins to new owners Stacey Brown and her daughter Maddie Harvey last week, Sue and long-term staff member Pauline Gregory said they are going to miss the friendship and camaraderie of their customers. “We have met so many really nice people and developed very good friendships with them over the years,” Sue said. “We’ve bonded with locals and many visitors who continually keep coming back. You get to know their families and their highs and lows and sometimes you are more like a Councillor than a newsagent.” After years of a “very hectic lifestyle” starting at the crack of dawn each morning, Sue thanks the community for their support.
“I’d like to thank the locals for being so supportive; we couldn’t have come this far without them,” she said. “The bypass hit us badly and without our local customers we would have floundered.” Having taken up their new roles earlier this week, Stacey and Maddie are, “definitely
very excited about the challenge ahead”. “We are going to give it the best go we can,” Stacey said. “We are looking forward to providing a good service to the community and meeting lots of new people, both locals and travellers.” Leaving the business in good hands, Sue said she now plans to spend more time with her daughters and grandchildren.

It comes as a surprise to many people to learn that they do not own their superannuation and therefore cannot include their superannuation as an asset to be disposed of by Will. After the death of a member of a superannuation fund, the superannuation entitlement of the deceased person is paid at the discretion of the trustee of the superannuation fund of which the deceased person was a member unless that deceased person has filed with the trustee a Binding Death Benefit Nomination (BDBN). If the trust deed governing the superannuation fund provides for the filing of a BDBN and if a BDBN has been filed (and assuming it is correctly completed and executed then the trustee of the superannuation fund is bound to abide by that BDBN and pay the superannuation in accordance with it. Effectively the BDBN can be an extension of the Will in that it can bind the trustee to pay the superannuation in accordance with

There can be taxation consequences. Also, the terms of the Will of the person completing the BDBN should be taken into consideration. In some circumstances, there are competing claimants for the superannuation, particularly where the member of the fund has been divorced and there are children from each of the marriages. Economic Development Team visits Tea Gardens By Margie TIERNEY THE MidCoast Council’s Economic Development Team came to Tea Gardens last week, to talk business and tourism with local community representatives and business owners. The meeting, organised by the Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism touched on a number of subjects including the Myall River Festival and ways MidCoast Council could help local business in various areas. The Economic Development Team was led by Robyn Brennan who spoke at length in regards to the Council’s initiative,‘Vibrant Spaces’. “There are five simple steps to implementing Vibrant Spaces, which are all about businesses using the footpath outside their
premises to welcome people to the street and encourage them to linger,” Robyn Brennan said. “We’ve freed up the ability for businesses to engage people by using the footpath, it’s now up to businesses owners to be proactive,” Robyn said. Stuart Sinclair, Principal of Ray White Real Estate was enthusiastic about the initiative. “I’ll embrace it and get it moving,” Stuart said. “It’s fantastic that it uses a common sense approach.” Other issues raised at the meeting included the hazards caused by bicycles using the footpath and parking issues, especially along the Tea Gardens riverfront. The MidCoast Economic Development team also wanted to make known that they are available to help businesses be pointed in the
right direction when seeking Government funding or Grants. Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce, President Graham Lang wants workshops to help navigate, grow and development small businesses, a move that was welcomed by the MidCoast team. Also raised was the controversial campaign surrounding the branding of the LGA, ‘Barrington Coast’. While Councillors voted in favour last Wednesday, by Thursday a Rescission Motion had been received, which means the Destination ‘Barrington Coast’ is still up in the air, until the Motion has been dealt with at another Council meeting on Wednesday 22 August. Successful year for Lions BULAHDELAH Lions Club formally inducted their Officers for the 20182019 year at their annual Change-over dinner held last weekend. Awards were also presented to recognise the efforts of the high achieving team of volunteers. Amongst the recipients
were Ian Mason and Phillip Mason who each received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest honour a Lion can receive. During the formalities, President Arthur Baker thanked the members for their enthusiasm and support over the past 12 months. “It’s about serving our

Action Group’s Gordon Grainger said. “Stockpile replenishment will come from future dredging campaigns in the Shortcut channel.” “The MRAG would like to acknowledge the assistance and support we have received from the Winda Woppa Association in reaching this outcome.” In the first stage of the project, MidCoast Council’s contractors will set up a temporary site compound and start preparing an access track to where the pump station will be located at Winda Woppa. The project will continue over coming months to include installation of a pipeline running through to Jimmy’s Beach on The Boulevarde, and then commissioning of the
pump station. In the meantime trucks will still be used to replenish sand as needed. Once complete, the Jimmy’s Beach Sand Transfer System will be capable of transferring 10,000 cubic metres of sand over a two week period. “Along with the cost benefits associated with the new sand replenishment system, the area will no longer be home to our trucks periodically bringing sand to Jimmy’s Beach,” Andrew added. “This is a real win for the local community in maintaining a beautiful recreational area of our coastline”. The pipeline is expected to be completed by early next year.

By Margie TIERNEY AFTER years of controversy, the construction of a Sand Transfer System is finally underway to replenish the sands at Jimmy’s Beach. MidCoast Council has described the area as an ‘erosion hotspot’. “Construction of the Sand Transfer System will have a significant and positive impact on managing erosion on Jimmy’s Beach in the future”, Andrew Staniland, MidCoast Council’s Coastal Management Coordinator said. “Rock walls, groynes and other hard engineering solutions have all been examined, however a sand nourishment program has been shown to offer the most financially sustainable option for maintaining the beach”, Mr Staniland said. The area along Jimmy’s Beach has experienced natural erosion for over 30 years, particularly after severe weather events. Just last month, much of the sand was washed away at the so-called pinch point. The cost of trucking sand onto the match is estimated to be $600,000 a year. “Sand transfer through this pipeline will be much more economical than the truck movements currently employed,” Myall River

I have a community anxiety. Recently I was given a written quote for “tinting” on my sunroom windows. I accepted the written quote and went ahead. I was suspicious at the time as the “guy” said: “I like to use my brain to work out the amount required to cover the windows”. I accepted the quote. After the job was completed, by the daughter, dad disappeared. On return dad said: “I got into trouble from the boss for not using the calculator instead of my brain.” Ho! ho! did I see him coming? He doubled the amount. How often does this happen to women? And do we need to pay a little more? Why are our local tradesmen crooks? Does it happen to men so often? SA, Fingal Bay Dear Mr TG, I’M going to try and merge my Netflix binging with some good advice. Recently, I’ve been watching Cosmetic Surgery Disasters (or some equally captivating title) which is hosted by the same guy who does the Embarrassing Bodies show (as an aside, who in their right mind would allow their infected anal fistula to be broadcast to the world?). Bear with me, SA. I know this appears to be an even wilder segue than I usually take, but bear with me. Let’s take the common boob job. Surgeon A says it will cost $14,000 plus the anaesthetist ($1,500) and then a couple of grand for any unforeseen issues that arise. Surgeon B says you can look like Jessica Rabbit and they’ll throw in return flights to Thailand, five-star accommodation, a round-the-clock medical team and some carafes of lime-green alcohol that you can sip, poolside, even though you’re attached to a drip and swaddled in bandages. The thing is, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. In relation to your particular issue with tradesmen, I would suggest that you always tell them that you work for the ATO. This scares the bejesus out of them. You watch how quickly their conversation moves from ‘do and charge’ to ‘verified quote’ when you start throwing in a line about Nigel from the tax department and how his current focus is on window tinting experts (following last year’s crack down on hair tinting professionals). On a more serious note, if you have a written quote, say: ‘Look Mr Tinter, I don’t want to get between you or your boss or your calculator or your brain. It’s not my fault that you can’t do basic calculations, that’s your business. I’ve accepted the quote and that’s what I’m paying.’ He doesn’t have a leg to stand on. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Close of season Pennant bash Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA
25 JULY: The weekly Nominated Triples accommodated 39 players today with 9 teams of Triples and 3 teams of Fours competing on both greens. All teams would have enjoyed the slick pace of the grass green even though it bought many of us undone! Only three teams completed the task of winning both games but it was the last minute inclusion of Bill Whalan with Lance Atkins and Ray Sullivan that saw them take first place on 57 points. The Myall Bistro voucher went to Barry Goode. 27 July: Friday Open Pairs was stood aside today to make way for the end of season Pennants Bash luncheon and presentation in the Club Bistro.
The function was well attended by players, officials, umpires and those who made a contribution in the running of the two Pennant sides over the 10 week season. The event was hosted by Bowling Club President Noel Jackson who thanked all those who participated with special mention of the great job done by the Selectors and the ladies from the Women’s Bowling Club who provided umpires for the home games. Presentations were made to players from both grades that put in outstanding performances during the season. Noel also highlighted the importance and the honour of representing our Club in the wider world of Newcastle District Lawn Bowls. Although both sides ended the competition with limited success, nonetheless all who participated will be enriched from the experience and will

It was good to see visiting bowlers Dale Cameron and Marie Reinhand join our members for the social bowls. Format for play was a game of 3 bowls Triples 18 ends and a game of Fours 18 ends. The Triples game was a victory for Judi Polak, Sheril Johnson and Jeanette Emmett 24 v Ingrid
Luck, Dawn Jones and Carolyn Bywater 17. Marie Reinhand, Christine Fossey, Dawn May and Dale Winter winning with a score of 19 against Dot Dallas, Dorothy Thompson, Bev Stephens and Dale Cameron 11. The winners of the day by drawing a card were Judi, Sheril and Jeanette. In the Triples semi-final Pam Gilchrist, Lynne Green (substitute player for Carol Hayden) and Lynda Richards were totally out bowled by Bette Saillard, Robyn Webster and Loretta Baker. One end left to bowl Kayelene’s team now only having a 3 shot advantage. The final end was won by Loretta’s ladies but just by 1 shot. A CONTINGENT of Myall Masters swimmers has just returned from Sydney after competing in the NSW Masters State Relay. 16 Myall swimmers took to the pool against swimmers from all over the State at the Homebush Olympic Aquatic Centre. “Out of the 18 events contested, Myall finished with 2 firsts, 5 seconds, 6
