New Supermarket for Hawks Nest By Margie TIERNEY IT’S been quite a wait, but the residents of Hawks Nest finally have a new supermarket. IGA will open it’s doors for the first time this coming Friday 30 September, just in time for the long weekend. The sign on the door will say “Welcome to Lovey’s Grocers, 2 local blokes, Hawks Nest.”
The 2 local blokes are owners Peter Trappel and James Lovegrove. “This is our 4th and last IGA, we wanted it to be somewhere local so that we could be just a relatively short drive away,” Peter told the News Of The Area. “We’re looking to stock some local produce from the Hunter Valley, and we’ll being asking the customers what they want.” The new IGA will also offer

sure the outside matched the inside, it’s a really good location and we’re happy with it,” said Peter. The Supermarket also creates around 25 new full time and part time jobs for the area. “We’ve had about 60 applicants,” he said. The IGA on the corner of Booner and Tuloa Streets, will open 7 days a week 7 am - 7pm, and possibly longer through school holiday periods.

Kate “Adventure Mumma” Richards, husband Rob Mitchell and children Josh and Charlie began their epic journey back in August setting out from Cairns, destination Melbourne, and all points in between. “We’re towing a very bright pink caravan, you can’t miss us,” Kate told the News Of The Area.
Last week it was Karuah’s turn to put out the welcome mat when the family stopped over at the Big4 holiday park for a fundraising sausage sizzle and happy hour with the local community. “We walked the sand dunes and dined out on the oysters,” said Kate. Another N.O.T.A publication THE News Of The Area is again expanding and will launch its third publication into the Tomaree area next week. Based on the same hyperlocal format as the Myall Coast and Medowie publications, 7000 free copies of the Bay News Of The Area will be distributed each week.
News Of The Area is a locally owned independent media company committed to bringing the latest local news and events relevant to the people of the area. As one of the founding members of the Myall Coast publication, Tea Gardens Ann Scully was instrumental in establishing the Myall Coast
News Of The Area after the Nota was discontinued in 2014. THE Myall Coast’s U3A’s Art and Photography Exhibition, set for 1-2 October, promises to be a really exciting event. The local U3A artists are an eclectic group who meet each Monday for their art classes. Lyn Chaikin from U3A told News Of The Area, “I was recently invited to visit the art class to meet them.” “Some of the artists are quite experienced and some are enjoying art as a new endeavour.” Ms Ckaikin said, “The whole atmosphere of the class is one of tranquility and focus. Sheril Johnson gave a demonstration of how acrylic paint can be applied to canvas then overlaid with glad
wrap.” “The glad wrap is scrunched and deftly pulled off the canvas, then the canvas is left to dry. When the paint is dry, the artists can add their own touches to the canvas. The overall effect is colourful and surprisingly effective.” After the initial exercise, most of the artists and budding artists continued with separate projects. Some were working with water colours and some with crayons and pencils. “It was really fun to join them for morning tea and to chat about their art and their preferred genre of painting,” Lyn Chaikin said. This year the Art Group is exhibiting with the photography group for the Art Exhibition. Admission is free.

A COMBINATION of cheers, tears and laughter marked an end to thirteen years of schooling for Year 12 students at Bulahdelah Central School last week. The occasion was celebrated with a formal graduation ceremony held at the school which was attended by parents, community members and official guests. Emotional speeches, performances and award presentations were topped off with a spontaneous flash mob dance by the Year 12 students, ensuring a memorable end to their formal schooling life. Amongst the 33 graduating students were twin sisters Jordan and CoriLee Schmidt from Pindimar. Jordan told News Of The Area, “Completing my secondary education with my sister was incredible.” “We got to go through everything together and we understand each other’s situations, it was always good just to have someone there for you,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of fun
together over the past 13 years and I couldn’t imagine school without my sister.” Being a twin, Jordan said teachers often called her by her sister’s name and even the bus driver regularly got the pair mixed up. Jordan’s good friend and School Captain Hannah Rietveld attended Bulahdelah Central School since Kindergarten. Hannah said the highlight of being at the same school for 13-years was knowing her teachers and fellow students well. “The majority of my teachers have been able watch me grow up and could really understand how I learnt,” Hannah said. “I think that also came with having such small classes which I’m sure will take some readjustment when starting university.” School Graduation Day is always like a reunion for longserving Visual Arts teacher Sue Cross. Mrs Cross has taught two generations of many families including graduating student Shannelle Russell and her mother Fiona.

“The school community is like an extended family and the parents and students value the experiences they’ve had,” Mrs Cross said. “It’s always a pleasure

MidCoast Council moving forward By Daniel SAHYOUN
IT’S been “business as usual” for MidCoast Council in the four months following the amalgamation according to Administer John Turner. Mr Turner was in Bulahdelah last week as an official guest at the school’s formal assembly and spoke with News Of The Area about the progress of the merger. “We’ve been able to settle the structure of council in relation to staffing and put into place the directors and managers and the staff underneath them, so that’s been a big step forward for us,” Mr Turner said. “We’re making sure that all services are being provided as they were prior to the amalgamation.” Mr Turner said there are always challenges when you have three separate organisations coming together. “One of the biggest challenges is going to be bringing a harmonious
arrangement to the services, but we’re working on it, and I’ve got to say there is extremely goodwill in the staff that is making this happen,” he said. Mr Turner told News Of The Area further community update sessions were being organised to keep residents fully informed about how the new council is developing. “At this stage, we’ve scheduled 11 community meetings for October and November and we’ll be putting out an advertising schedule shortly,” he said. The Local Representative Committee (LRC) has met with residents in the Manning, Forster and Gloucester areas over the past few weeks. Mr Turner said he was “unsure at the moment” when the LRC would be meeting with the Myall Coast communities. During his visit to Bulahdelah, Mr Turner also took the opportunity to speak informally with community members.

DEVELOPER Peter Kampfner met with members of Bulahdelah Golf Club last week to discuss

further community meeting has been organised with Mr Kampfner on 11 October. Mr Kampfner said the land for the project needs to be rezoned which involves
a town planning analysis organised by Council. Once the rezoning component has been approved, the Development Application process will

SOS Car tour

TEA Gardens locals have lent their support to a petition calling for an end to “forced Organ Harvesting” by the Chinese Regime. More than 200 signatures were gathered by members of the “SOS” car tour during their visit to Tea Gardens and Port Stephens last Friday. “We realise that most Australians know little about Falun Gong and the tragic situation in China,” said Dr Lucy Zhao, President of the Falun Dafa Association of Australia. “We hope the Australian government can pass a resolution similar to US
House of Representatives and European Parliament urging China to stop organ harvesting and the persecution of Falun Gong.” An independent investigation of 700 hospitals in China claims that between 60,000 and 100,00 transplants are conducted every year, with non consenting prisoners the primary source of organs. The SOS tour is in the midst of a pilgrimage to 200 Australian towns. The Falun Gong supporters are also running a postcard campaign with the simple message “end the persecution.” They hope to deliver over 20 thousand postcards to
the office of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and
another 30 thousand to MP’s Australia wide.

Since the last community meeting I’ve been flooded with calls of support,” he said. “They all want to see Bulahdelah thrive and can see the merit and benefits of the project.” Although some groups have expressed concerns about adverse impacts on existing businesses, Mr Kampfner said the project is set to benefit all services and businesses and put Bulahdelah back on the map. “We’re expecting far more people to come into Bulahdelah, including residents and customers, to increase substantially,” he said. “The hotel will not be competing with existing businesses in price point accommodation. We are offering an alternative at a substantially higher cost, we have two distinctive markets.” With increased numbers of tourists, up to 500
additional residents in addition to the people staying and working at the hotel and service centre, Mr Kampfner expects a 300 percent increase in traffic volume in the town. “There are an enormous number of people that want to see that happen, and there are some who don’t understand the impact of these increased numbers,” he said. “I will speak with anyone with concerns and I am totally prepared to take feedback, both positive and negative.” Mr Kampfner said promoting tourism is a primary part of the project. “Bulahdelah has far more tourist attractions than are being promoted and it needs a concerted effort to boost it,” he said. “I absolutely love the area, it’s spectacular, I think it has magic to it.” All members of the public are invited to attend the community meeting at 6.00pm on 11 October at the Bulahdelah School of Arts Hall.

Skipping to a healthy heart WORLD Heart Day on 29 September reminds us all of the importance of looking after our health and particularly our hearts. Highlighting the importance of being physically active, students at Karuah Public School participated in their annual Jump Rope for Heart Skip Off last week. While raising money for the Heart Foundation, the students were able to show off their skipping skills and learn new tricks including crisscross, peppers and double-dutch.

MORE than 300 adventure enthusiasts from across Australia are expected to descend into Bulahdelah over the long weekend to take part in the 2016 Wildside Adventure Race. Teams will have up to 36 hours to navigate through spaces rarely visited as they move through checkpoints by foot, mountain bike and kayak. The teams will use a map and compass together with their own wits and skills to navigate their way over an unmarked route through the spectacular forests and rivers surrounding Bulahdelah. 21 September The weekly cycle of rain on Wednesday was foiled today when it looked like another wash-out was to occur to dampen the spirits of the Wednesday Nominated Triples devotees. It was still raining at 9.40 am but organisers, with the benefit of weather radar, could see that there was a clearing pattern developing and play commenced right on-time at 10.00. All play was restricted to the synthetic green with the grass a little doughy from the early rain. There were 6 games of Triples and 1 game of Pairs accounting for the 40 players in attendance. Proving that he does not need the his usual playing partners to record a win, Col Amos continued on his winning way, partnered by Ian Baker in a Pairs game. They easily accounted for their opponents winning by handsome margins in both games. No one was ever going to beat +56! In second place was the team of Tom Short, Peter Gurney and Dennis Ashbridge. They recorded a very competitive +33. Triathlon a Runaway Success By Margie TIERNEY TERRIFIC event, beautiful location, great locals! Just a few of the comments from competitors and organisers after the first ever Triathlon Festival in Hawks Nest last Saturday. Close to 600 athletes competed in the event which comprised of 4 different distances Standard, Sprint, Enforcer, and Enticer. “Yesterday we were a little bit worried with the winds picking up, but mother nature has certainly smiled on us today,” Elite Energy spokesman Sebastian Gallery told the News Of The Area. Racing kicked off at 7.30 on Saturday morning, competitors ranging in age from 13 to 70 years young. The standard race consisted of a 1.5 kilometre swim, 40 kilometre bike ride followed by a 10 kilometre run. “This location is perfect, it’s close to Newcastle and
Sydney, all you have to do is walk onto the beach to see how breathtaking it is, and the roads around here are nice and flat which is great for Triathlon as well,” said Sebastian. The Hawks Nest Triathlon Festival had been in the planning for more than 12 months, and it wouldn’t have happened without the help of local volunteers. Community Liaison Officer Jodie Mclaren was in charge of recruiting volunteers from not- for-profit organisations, schools and sporting groups in the local area. “It’s really easy, they just have to turn up on the day and we donate money to their organisations,” said Jodie. 50 volunteers were needed to help with catering, marshalling and road closure duties. The Hawks Nest Progress Association, the Lioness Club were all happy to oblige as were 6 members from the North Arm Cove Residents
Association. “It beats the hell out of doing a chook raffle,” said volunteer Peter Chappelow. Competitors, Christy Trollip and Paula Luke from Sydney, couldn’t speak highly enough of the local volunteers. “They were very encouraging on the run, and in the water,” said Paula. Christy said, “It’s a real family atmosphere, people bring their kids, locals come out, it’s really nice to see.” The Hawks Nest Triathlon Festival was expected to boost the local economy by $500,000. Elite Energy officials will decide in the next month or two,whether the Hawks Nest event will become a regular feature on the Tri Series calendar..
