It is possible to split the superannuation entitlements of married (and de facto couples, except in Western Australia) as part of a property settlement adjustment ? Such splits need to be the subject of a Court order or a Superannuation Agreement entered into strictly in accordance with the Family Law Act.
Superannuation assets increased 6.8% in aggregate from March 2017 and were $2,606.2 billion at 31 March 2018. These assets were contained in SMSF, Industry Funds, Public and Private Sector schemes and Statutory Funds. The nature, form and characteristics of these funds differ and different rules apply to different types of funds, even after a splitting order has been made.
This is so for adjustments made to base amounts that a non member spouse (NMS) might receive in a SMSF and most Defined Benefit Funds. When a splitting order is served on the trustee of these funds, the trustee generally holds the base amount for payment to the NMS until the member satisfies a condition of release. In the interim the trustee adds interest to the base amount pending payment in accordance with determinations of the Government Actuary. The Family Law (Superannuation) (Interest Rate for Adjustment Period) Determination 2018 was recently released and an interest rate of 4.9% per annum will be added to the relevant base amounts in the financial year beginning 1 July 2018.

A WATERSHED BUDGET “FOR THE PEOPLE” The NSW Government’s 2018-19 has been hailed as a “budget for the people”. With a $3.9 billion surplus, confirmed our State is Number 1 in Australia in terms of economic growth and employment. Young Graffiti Busters STUDENTS at Bulahdelah Central School have had a lesson in removing graffiti from the regions well-known Graffiti Buster, Ted Bickford. Commonly known as ‘Mr Graffiti’, Ted has been voluntarily removing graffiti since retiring in the Great

During last week’s workshop at Bulahdelah, 20 community-minded students from Years 5-11 were taught the ropes in preparation for ridding the school of graffiti. Relieving Principal Mrs Deb Gilbert, said the school is “very fortunate” to have partnered with Mr Bickford, who is known for his “generosity’ and “expertise”. “We have had a couple of situations where people have come in on a weekend and graffitied, and that is something we want to address,” she said.
By Margie TIERNEY IN these days of very fast trains, planes and automobiles, it’s often the case that many families are spread out all over the country and only come together for the big occasions, such as weddings and sadly funerals. The ‘Parish’ clan is a classic example. Not so long ago, the Parish siblings, cousins, uncles and aunties all got together for the funeral of an elderly relative in Lismore, in the State’s Northern Rivers. “We’d come from all over for Uncle John’s farewell, he was the last of my father’s brothers and aged 96,” Liz Cullen ‘nee Parish’ told News Of The Area. “We hadn’t seen our cousins for years and what followed shortly after was a sign that our family was destined to have more regular get togethers when I bumped into a cousin again
in Sydney a short time later.” As it happened some of the Parish clan were already holding regular get-togethers at Bulahdelah and the Sydney connection decided to join in. “The first time we headed off from Sydney bound for Bulahdelah we never made it.” “A rock on the highway tore our tyre to shreds and being a Sunday the only place that could replace the tyre was on the Central Coast,” Liz said A tow truck ride and two tyres made for a $900 trip.
But it was second time lucky, with Liz, sister Sue and brothers Geoffrey and Jonathon making it to Bulahdelah last weekend for a great catch-up with their extended family at the local Bowling Club. “There was Helen from Port Macquarie, Louis from Toronto, Barbara from the Central Coast, Eric from Farley and Phillip from Vacy,” Liz said. “We all had a great time and they plan on making it a regular get-together every three months.”
“The kids are very keen to learn from Mr Bickford and make our school look fantastic.” The group of young ‘Graffiti Busters’ have already conducted an audit of the school grounds and buildings and identified
areas that need to be cleaned. Mrs Gilbert said the students are now ready to roll up their sleeves and get stuck into the task. While graffiti is an ongoing issue for some local Councils, costing millions
of dollars to remove, Mr Bickford said since expanding his program into schools, “there is now practically no graffiti in our area”. “It’s about having a sense of pride in the area around you,” he said.

In Recognition of Support LAST week a presentation made to the President of Karuah RSL Sub Branch Peter Fidden by Warrant Officer Brent Leong a Loadmaster from RAAF 37 Squadron Richmond NSW. The presentation was made at the Sub Branch monthly meeting on Saturday 16 June. The presentation
consisted of an Australian flag and an Escape map that were carried onboard a 37 Squadron C130 aircraft on an operational mission in Afghanistan. Also included was a signed photograph of the C130 aircraft that flew the mission and a photograph of the crew. Warrant Officer Leong
said that the Squadron endeavoured to make this type of presentation to the smaller RSL Sub Branches outside of the cities. “These presentations are in recognition of the support they provide to current and ex service personnel.” Barrie French Honorary Secretary Karuah RSL Sub Branch told News Of The Area, “The items will be displayed in the Karuah RSL Club along with other memorabilia.”

Accountants National Accolade MEGAN Faraday-Bensley has been named as a national finalist in the prestigious 2018 Australian Accounting Awards. Iconic Reserve Stays Open FEARS that O’Sullivan’s Gap Reserve could be permanently closed to the public have been laid to rest, with National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) assuring the community that the area will remain open. Wootton Community Network (WCN) member Pat Tate said the group raised concerns after being informed that the reserve, located between Bulahdelah and Wootton, “was facing likely closure due to costs and lack of use”. “We were planning on lobbying to get some improvements made to the picnic area and walking trail, but we were told that the preference of NPWS was to close the area,” she said. Addressing a crowd of residents at a recent public meeting called by the WCN, group member Craig Tate said the reserve is an important area of unique flora and fauna.

“We need to keep it open because people are never going to see these species together in any other place,” he said. “We need to have that recognised and published right across NSW as we are sitting on something that is essentially an iconic thing.” News Of The Area contacted NPWS for comment and received a statement confirming, “The O’Sullivan’s Gap Picnic area will not be closed”. “Given the strong support within the Wootton community, NPWS will consult if any changes are proposed for the site,” Senior Public Affairs Officer from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage Stuart Cohen stated. Pat said the WCN will continue to negotiate with NPWS to ensure the public can enjoy the unique area well into the future.

20 JUNE: The usual Wednesday Nominated Triples looked very much in doubt today but the rain disappeared early in the morning after flooding the greens overnight. How lucky we are to have a synthetic green to rely on. When play got underway, 37 players competed over 2 games of 12 ends. Only two teams were successful in winning both games with the money winners comprising; Keith Smith, Rob Young and John Younghusband. They compiled 57 points. The winner of the Bistro voucher was Peter Gurney. 22 June: As expected, numbers are down for Friday Open Pairs but it is nice to see players turning up and having a competitive roll. Once the Pennant season is completed Friday Open Pairs will get back on to an even keel. 23 June: Round 7 of the Newcastle District Saturday Pennant competition resumed today with the Pelican Pest Control sponsored Grade 4 side playing at home to Karuah and the Pelican Pest Control sponsored Grade 6 side playing away at Karuah In Grade 4 one home side was successful. The Keith Smith four had a great win 24-19 and the Barry Drayton side were narrowly beaten but the remaining game was disappointing losing by a mammoth 23 shots. Karuah winning the Master Board 68-46. The Grade 6 side fared no better, playing on a rain affected green which was running at about 11-12 seconds. Only one Tea Gardens team put in a good showing with the Danny Johnson team going down by one shot 19-20 and the remaining two teams comprehensively beaten. Karuah were the easy winners 71-36.

I have taken on the plastic free challenge in the lead up to Plastic Free July, but when I go to the supermarket everything is wrapped in plastic packaging. Also, I keep forgetting to take my reusable bags with me and I’m spending a small fortune on new ones each time. Mrs HQ, Salamander Bay Dear Mrs PA, I’M very pleased you brought this up, because although supermarkets are responding to the backlash from their plastic bag use and phasing them out, there is still plastic everywhere. Cucumbers are wrapped in plastic, chopped up pieces of pumpkin and potato are wrapped in plastic (because apparently we’ve not only lost our minds, but also our ability to chop things up), mushrooms are pre-sliced and wrapped in plastic, and all this before we even leave the fruit and veg aisle. From there it’s just plastic city. Given that our beautiful waterways are in a right old mess at the moment from the shipping container spill, plastic is on the public’s radar more than ever. Now, the last line in your conundrum is easily solved. Since you probably have close to 50 reusable bags due to your forgetfulness, you just need to go to the pantry (right now, Mrs HQ, I want you to go right after you’ve finished reading this sentence; you can come back to me later) and put at least half your reusable bags in the boot of your car, in fact all readers do it now. I’m about to do the same. Back so soon? Wasn’t too difficult was it? Now for the next dilemma, you can pop your fruit and vegies into one of your reusable bags, thereby saving the need to put them into the grotty trolley or another plastic bag. Don’t buy the prechopped rubbish. It’s heaps more expensive per kilo anyway. Or, you can do what they did on that vigilante YouTube video and gather with fellow rebels, discard all your plastic as you shop, make a big pile of plastic at the checkout, and maybe join together in a flash mob dance where you pretend to be happy little cauliflowers, carrots and cucumbers. Alternatively, shop at one of the many farmers’ markets where they use string bags or baskets. I hope this helps. Good on you for trying to make a difference. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Womens bowls between rain Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 19th June: Bowls was cancelled due to the wet weather. Thursday 21st June: No social bowls played. Fortunately the synthetic green was open for play and according to the “weather radar” there was a break of a couple of hours before the next downfall, so the final of the Club Championship Minor Singles was played. Karen McPhie v Lynda Richards. This contest lasted for 23 ends Karen always in the lead from the 5th end
where the score was 5 all. On the 9th end she had gained a 9 shot lead but Lynda won the next 5 ends adding 8 shots to her tally. The score on the 14th end Karen 14 v Lynda 13. The remainder of the final belonged to Karen on the 21st end she had reached 24, 1 shot short of victory. Lynda stuck on 16 points for the last 3 ends. The 22nd end, an attempted come back for Lynda, gaining 3 points but too little too late. The next end resulted in Karen winning the competition 25 v 19. Congratulations Karen well bowled. Last week, the Hunter Surf Life Saving Branch held their 2017/2018 season Award of Excellence Presentation Night. Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club (TGHN SLSC) again figured prominently as a club of excellence in the categories of competition, administration, and life-saving skills. Long time member, Peter Rogers told News Of The Area, “Maxine Cook walked away as the Administrator of the Year.” “No-one in the Newcastle Branch gets near to in her efforts to achieve this and keep Tea Gardens Hawks Nest heading in the right direction.” “Maxine is the main reason that TGHN SLSC is the only Gold Medal accredited

Daniel Evans, Aaron Bills, Kane Chisholme, Jack Croese, Aiden Bills, Brock Cole, Sam Croese, Tyson Peters, Trent Saunders, Jake Blanch and Aaron Benn.

Trent Saunders was the first to score 10 minutes in and with Sam Croese converting 6/0. The Hawks were the next to score with a converted try 5 minutes later to equal the score 6 all. Then another converted try 2 minutes later to the Hawks 12/6. The Roos kept them out until just over half way through the first half and Tea Gardens were in again 18/6. The metre men in the first half for the Roos were Work Horse Matt Croese with half the Hawks hanging off him as he kept on going up the field. Trent Saunders, Tyson Peters, Dylan Foley, Jake Blanch, Mitch O’Bryan, Adam Crampton, Jack Croese, Aiden Bills, Aaron Benn, Sam Croese, Kane Chisholme, Ben Feeney and Daniel Evans. The Hawks got an intercept under 10 minutes to go in the first half and ran nearly the full length of the field with a successful conversion to score was Tea Gardens 24 Karuah 6. Just over 5 minutes to go and the Hawks were in again the halftime score was 28 Tea Gardens 6 Karuah. Tea Gardens were the first to score 10 minutes into the second half 34/6. The big hitters in the second half for the Roos were Daniel
