News Of The Area asked MidCoast Council for comment and their media office responded with this email. MidCoast Council’s Manager of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades, Dan Aldridge, said, “All three ferry providers have approved DAs to conduct ferry services from Tea Gardens Wharf on Marine Drive.’’ All three DAs require the providers to erect a single sign on the Reserve near the river indicating the timetable for all three providers,” the Council email continued. ‘’Their timetables are also a condition of the DA approvals.

On the Nelson Bay side, there are two signs which clearly show when the ferries run or if they are not running on any particular day. Gordon Grainger of the Foreshore Reference Group said, “If there was a board that we could change when the ferry is cancelled, I’d happily do that.” Ray Horsfield summed it up well when he told News Of The Area, “The big picture is, the ferry service is a tourist icon, it’s vital commerce for the town (Tea Gardens).” “Thousands of people come here every year and there are not too many old ferries that do this.” “We need new board signs, that match up with the brochure and online information. TWO men will appear in Forster Local Court next month after being caught drink driving in Bulahdelah on Saturday 15 October. A 40-year old male was issued with a Court Attendance Notice at about 6.40pm for low-range drink driving. On the same night, a 50year old male was arrested
around 10.00pm for driving with a mid-range prescribed concentration of alcohol. Both men will appear before Forster Local Court in relation to the offences. The charges were a result of a Traffic Enforcement Operation which was conducted in the Manning Great Lakes Command area.

Grease is the word
FOLLOWING months of rehearsals, the curtain is set to rise on Bulahdelah Central School’s production of the musical Grease next week. The show will be packed with all the hit songs from the 1979 movie including Greased Lightning, You’re The One That I Want and Summer Nights. Added to the choreographed dance routines, stunning sets and dazzling costumes, the atmosphere is sure to be electrifying and will have the audience hand-jiving and singing along with the cast. The lead roles of Sandy and Danny Zuko will be capably played by Paris Battle from Tea Gardens and Bailey Shultz from Bulahdelah. Paris auditioned for the role earlier this year and said she was surprised when she found out she had landed the leading part. “It’s been challenging and lots of hard work learning the lines and dance routines, but it’s also very rewarding and lots of fun,” she said. “The cast is amazing, everyone has a lot of ability and you learn so much from the people around you during rehearsals.” The main cast of around 50 secondary students will be supported by a 25-voice choir made up of children from Kindergarten to Year 6. Paris told News Of The Area
the 1950’s themed musical will appeal to everyone. “The whole cast have so much fun on stage so the performance is full of energy,” she said. “It’s a great fast-paced entertaining show that’s not to be missed.” Evening performances will run from Tuesday 1 November through to Thursday 3 November commencing at 6.00pm in the School Hall. PORT Stephens MP Kate Washington and Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead have welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to give the Greyhound Racing Industry one last chance. “On behalf of the many greyhound owners, breeders and trainers, the majority of whom are law-abiding, good people, I’m relieved that the government finally saw the error of its ways,” Ms Washington said. “Mike Baird and Troy Grant decided to ban an entire industry without any consultation or regard for the impacts their decision would
have on regional communities,” she added. Kate Washington, alongside her Labor colleagues, spoke and voted against the ban when the Bill was presented to Parliament whilst Stephen Bromhead voted in favour of shutting down the Industry. Ms Washington said she was disappointed to see that Mr Bromhead did not join with three of his National party colleagues who crossed the floor of Parliament to vote against the Bill. “Instead, Stephen Bromhead voted to ban the greyhound industry, against the interests of the many

residents in his electorate, who I met, who were going to be adversely affected,” she said. “It’s the height of hypocrisy that Mr Bromhead now welcomes the government’s backflip.” Mr Bromhead said in a statement the government had listened to community concerns about the racing ban and the way it was implemented. “It’s clear the community agrees we must put an end to the animal cruelty outlined in the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry – pure and simple,” he said. “But we underestimated the community’s desire to give the greyhound industry one last chance to reform.
“I’ve had the opportunity over the last few weeks and months to speak with other Members and relay the concerns of my electorate. “I think it’s the mark of a good government and a good Premier that we can listen to the people,” he added. Mr Bromhead said he was disappointed and disgusted to hear of another case of live baiting despite the spotlight on the industry and its need to reform. “Greyhound racing will be subject to the toughest regulations in the country. It is now up to the industry to demonstrate its commitment and put this into action to reform for the benefit of all involved,” he said.

The Supreme Court recently granted an appeal, by a person charged with a speeding offence, in relation to directions made by a Local Court Magistrate for the service of evidence. History of The Branch By Margie TIERNEY
THERE’S a gap in the history of “The Branch,” which the Karuah local history group would like to fill. The Branch is a large pocket of land to the west of the Pacific Highway at the turnoff to Karuah. Robyn Witt, a member of the Karuah Local History Group told News Of The Area, “We’re currently undertaking a project which will ultimately lead to a book on the area.” The Branch dates back to the 1820’s. The area was originally part of a one million acre
grant of land belonging to the Australian Agricultural Company. From the 1850’s to the 1930’s the area thrived, thanks to the timber industry and a local sawmill. Between the 1930’s and the 1980’s a mill was owned by CSR and AMP owned a big chunk of land. “And that’s where our information is sketchy,” said Robyn. “We’d like to hear from anyone who remembers those years or has any information about those times.” Today an old cricket pitch is all that’s left of
the village and the derelict remains

THE call is out for volunteers to join the Garbage Army. Their mission is to clean up the rubbish on Sandy Point Beach, just north of Hawks Nest. Leading the charge, local David Fingret. “The winter East Coast Lows have done our beaches a favour, sort of,” said David. “The huge incoming tides brought with them ocean flotsam and jetsam but when they receded removing the
sand, much of the garbage that had laid hidden for years was left uncovered.” David told News Of The Area, “There are glass bottles, aerosol cans, PET containers, fishing debris and kids toys.” “There is a great opportunity to remove a huge amount of concentrated rubbish before the winds and tides disperse it again.’’ Currently, the Garbage Army stands at around eight to ten volunteers with 4WDs, trailers, bags and gloves at the ready.
But more willing hands are needed to fill the gloves and all are welcome. The clean up is happening this Sunday 30 October at 10am. Assemble at Sandy Point Beach car park (off Mungo Brush Road). There was a terrific response from the public with a packed house viewing a range of fashions, accessories, and decorations from 11 businesses of Hawks Nest/ Tea Gardens. Lioness president Linda Allen was impressed with the support shown for this night of fashion saying that it was a truly successful fundraiser, with the evening raising
approximately $2400. The Lioness Club found that the hard work and many hours put into its organising, was well rewarded. Fashion show coordinator and choreographer, Lioness Carole Richards, was full of praise for the help she received from so many people. The music, supplied by the dj Jomeca Laf, complemented beautifully the entire evening, as did the make up by Loooks, and hair
styling by Hairdinkum. The models showed a comprehensive range of clothes and accessories from eight local fashion shops and showed them all to their best advantage. There was family involvement as well with generations of models taking to the stage. A real benefit of the fashion show was the displaying of so many fashion houses under one roof by the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest clothing and accessories shops. The Northern Riders Line Dance Club provided top class line dancing displays while showing off more fashion accessories and were well received by a very appreciative audience. While final figures are yet to be determined, it appears the major beneficiary of the fashion show’s fundraiser, Ronald Mcdonald House of Newcastle will be well pleased with the efforts of the Lioness Club and all its helpers.

Focus on identity A COMMUNITY focus group session was recently held in Bulahdelah as part of the process to develop the new MidCoast identity. The three-hour workshop was led by Consultants with representatives from MidCoast Council and community members from North Arm Cove, Bulahdelah and Old Bar participating in the discussions. M o u n t a i n s , waterways, agriculture, tourism and the unique characteristics of each of the communities in the region were identified as assets of the area. The group also discussed the invaluable volunteer resource in smaller communities
and the importance of keeping small town Visitor Information Centres operating. Concerns regarding the loss of identity of smaller towns and villages and the generic branding of the diverse range of communities in the MidCoast region were also considered. Similar workshops were held in Wingham, Gloucester, Taree, Forster and Tuncurry and MidCoast residents were also given the opportunity to present their views via an online survey. MidCoast Council Director of Community Spaces and Services Paul De Szell said the online feedback and ideas from the community
focus groups would now be collated and two visual identity options would be developed in consultation with a steering committee. “The objective is to create a dynamic place brand that will become immediately recognisable as MidCoast, both within our region and beyond,” he said. “In November, the two options will be placed on exhibition and our community will be invited to vote for the identity they believe most accurately represents them and their aspirations for the MidCoast region.” The final and ongoing stage of the project will see the new identity being incrementally rolled out across MidCoast Council’s assets, places and services.

Volunteer named as finalist

q FINALIST: Laurie Sumner recognized for his community volunteering. BULAHDELAH’S Laurie Sumner has been named as a finalist in the 2016 Myall Lakes Community Awards. At 85-years young, Laurie has been honoured in the Senior Person of the Year category and recognises his volunteer work in the town. Laurie is an active member of the Bulahdelah Rural Fire Service (RFS) and has attended well over 90 percent of all call outs during the past 10 years. He is also involved in the Lions Club, Driver Reviver Program and donates his time each Friday to the School Breakfast Club. Laurie’s volunteer work is a result of his desire to
help people and be part of the community. “You don’t need rewards for doing community work, we all do it because we enjoy it,” he said. “The people we meet through volunteering are all like one big family.” Laurie was nominated for the award by members of the Bulahdelah RFS. Secretary Grahame Rowell said the award nomination not only recognises Laurie’s RFS work, but also his volunteering in many other groups in the town. “He’s very active in the RFS and attends accidents and fires at any hour of the day or night, even if

REFILLING your drink bottle is getting easier when you head out and about in the mid coast region, with more than a dozen bottle refill stations around the area to make choosing tap water an easy decision. The refill stations, located in various spots across the Manning and Great Lakes, are about providing the community with a choice for drinking water when on the move, rather than having to resort to bottled water. Installed as part of a joint program by MidCoast Council and MidCoast Water the refill stations have been placed

POLICE are investigating the theft of a jack hammer, two hedge trimmers and sockets sets which were stolen from the Council Depot yard in Harold Street, Bulahdelah. The break-in occurred between 3.30pm on
Tuesday 18 October and 6.00am the following morning. The tools had been secured in locked garages in the compound and the offenders gained access by removing the padlocks. The police report states
several other items had been moved in apparent readiness to be taken, but they had been left behind. Fingerprint police have attended the scene and inquiries into the offence are continuing.

ALONG with having lots of fun dressing up and trickor-treating this Halloween, 10-year-old Maggie Cunich from Bulahdelah will also be helping Guide Dogs Australia. “I love going trickor-treating and visiting neighbours, and over the last couple of years more and more people have been giving money instead of lollies,” she said. “I love animals, so I’ve decided to donate any
money I get while trick-ortreating to the Guide Dogs.” Maggie, who has two dogs and two pet guinea pigs, is thrilled that dogs can be trained to help people who are blind or vision impaired. “It takes about two years to train a guide dog and every bit of money will help in some way,” she said. “Dogs are great, they love going for walks, playing with you and they will even sit on your feet
and keep them warm on a cold day.” Maggie has decided on a witch’s costume for Halloween this year and told News Of The Area the decorations are all under control. “We definitely don’t need to worry about getting fake spiders or cobwebs, we have plenty of real ones around the house,” she said. Halloween is celebrated annually on 31 October.

HSC exam adds up YEAR 12 students McKelty-Ray Searle and Luana White from Tea Gardens were amongst the 32,477 students across the state who sat the Mathematics General HSC Examination last Friday. Luana said the 2.5hour paper was fair with a good mix of easy and more challenging questions. “The time went so quickly but I managed to get an answer down for all the questions,” she said. “I liked the problems on taxes and probability, but I found the geometry one’s a bit tougher than I
was expecting.” McKelty-Ray told News Of The Area she liked the practical scenarios and multiple-choice questions. “There were lots of good problem-solving questions with just a few tough trigonometry ones towards the end of the paper,” she said. “The questions on calculating fuel for a trip and working out the cost of car insurance were also good.” McKelty and Luana, who both attended Bulahdelah Central School, said they elected
to study the General Mathematics Course for their HSC as the content was relevant and useful. “The topic on financial matters was really helpful as it covered earning and managing money, taxation and investing,” McKelty said. “We learnt how to calculate wages, interest, income tax, GST and prepare a budget.” Both girls are now looking forward to some “chill time” with friends before getting back to the books to prepare for their final examinations next week.

THE final of the Minor Singles was played by Bev Rhodes and Karen McPhie in sunny and warm conditions on 18 October. Bev made a very strong start to the game leading 16 to 6 at the 15th end. Karen then played to equal Bev and then take the lead at 20 to 16 at the 24th end. Bev again played well to gain the lead at 22 to 20. A few ends later, Karen came back with 23 to Bev’s 22. Bev then picked up another shot to lead 24 to 23, only needing one more shot to reach 25. Bev then rolled 2 shots to
take the game out with a score of 26 to Karen’s 23. What a game - The crowd enjoyed a great finish! A thoroughly well-deserved win to Bev after 10 years of Minor Singles competition. Congratulations Bev. Thanks to our Umpire, Pat Baker, Kerry Faber for marking the game, and President Robyn for scoring. This competition began in 2014 with the secretaries of the two clubs, Annette Davis and Vicki Rankin, initiating this wonderful event. The competition was played with six teams of four from each club. Play commenced for 21 ends with an excellent result for Tea Gardens. Rink 1 led by skip Liz Kelly won 25 to 20 while on rink 2 Lemon Tree Passage led by L Jordan outplayed Tea Gardens in a very exciting game with scoring 22 to 19. On rink 3 Tea Gardens won handsomely with a score of 32 to 10 while on rink 4 the Tea Gardens team led by Loretta Baker won 21 to 14.

19 OCTOBER - A good field of 48 Bowlers took to the greens today to contest the Wednesday Nominated Triples Competition. Both green were in use and both playing nicely. Ironically the winners game from the only game of 3-bowl Pairs. Neil Kibble and Leigh Hunt had a good day and easily accounted for their opposition. They ended the day with a great score of +40. Great to see Leigh back and playing well! Far from the heady heights of the winning score, the team of; Denis Wilberforce, Bill Moon and Stewart Sturrock managed a score of +29 to take second spot. Lucky Losers were; Ron Green, Peter Gurney and Bill Whalan. 21 October - With the mercury on the rise 16 bowlers contested the Friday Open Jackpot Pairs today in sunny

The “pot” will jackpot to $100.00 next week. 23 October - Over the weekend we received a visitation from 38 Ladies from Windang, who all stayed at the Country Club Motel. On Sunday, a number of them braved the elements to play bowls with our Sunday Invitation to bowls group and although the weather was not conducive to good bowling they all seemed to enjoy themselves both at bowls and at lunch. We hope they will call again.

After two teams finished their regulation four games with four wins, a playoff determined the winners and runners up.
The winning mixed doubles team consisted of Gene McKenzie and Kumaresh Harvey. The mixed doubles runners up team were Robert Bartlett and Gail Bartlett. The ladies highest score was 97 for the evening obtained from Wendy Earnshaw. The mens highest score was 140 points achieved from Darren Rapley.

The Milo T20 Blast Play Cricket organisation supplies the cricket equipment and a uniform and an amp so that music can be played while the cricket game is on. Erin Matheson explained that there is a skills zone and a modified game that is played each week.

MYALL Masters Swimming Club is in the swim for the Summer season. It has been a busy return to the pool for members. On the first night of training,
“That way there are no children just sitting around waiting while another team may be batting.” “There is always a skill they can be practising which involves batting and bowling.” So cricket has become fast and funky. There were some children who had not seen a cricket game played before or did not know how to bat or bowl but they were encouraged by the coaches to learn with them. One child commented, “That was the best sports day ever!” “The kids had a lot of fun and it was great to see so many wanting to play,” Erin and Geoff Matheson told News Of The Area. There was a real buzz at the Bulahdelah Jack Ireland Sporting Grounds as many families gathered to watch their children play and to partake in a BBQ which will operate as a fundraiser. It was another encouraging event for the Bulahdelah Cricket Club to see so many people involved.

Hawks Nest Social Golf By Luke BOYD THE strong north-easter was not going to stop the determined twilight golfers on 20 October for an afternoon of enjoyment. With a great turn out, the social golfers played a great round of nine holes of golf. After a countback ,two golfers were equalled on 21 points, Frank Murphy was the twilight golf winner. The twilight golfing runner up was Leon Katz. The nearest to the pin competition winner was John Della. Doug Hamm won the raffle prize.
Bobako, Chris Lock and Peter King who gained top three placings in all of their events. Leon swimming in the 65-69 age group, won gold in the 50 m and 200 m breastroke. Chris Lock, gained a gold for 50 m backstroke, silver for 100 m freestyle and secured a bronze in the 200 m breastroke. Chris swims in the 70-74 age group. Competing in the 80-84 age group Peter King added more ’’ bling’’ to the Club’s tally with gold in the 50 m and 100 m freestyle and silver in the 50 m and 100 m breastroke. A wonderful personal and Club effort! The coveted Club Handicap race commenced at Monday night’s training. The weather was miserable but the energy enthusiastic. Even the new members braved the cold conditions to register a time trial. Strong performances were displayed by all swimmers. Masters Swimming caters for people 18 years and over who would like to learn to swim, train, compete or be a social member. If you would like to be part of the fun, fitness and friendship that is Myall Masters come to Tea Gardens Pool at 5 pm on a Monday night.

By Margie TIERNEY THE recent inaugural Triathlon Festival in Hawks Nest was so successful, organisers have already announced it will be back next year. “I am happy to let you know that we will be coming back to Hawks Nest in 2017,” Seb Gallery, media spokesman for Elite Energy Events, told News Of The Area. “At this stage, prior to all council approvals and documentation being finalised we are looking at the weekend of 16 September 2017,” he said. Nearly 600 athletes took part in the first Hawks Nest Triathlon, competitors ranging in age from 13 to mid 70’s. The event comprised four different distances, Standard, Sprint, Enforcer and Enticer. It also kicked off the 2016 -17 series for Triathletes across New South Wales and Victoria. Local volunteers
