Volunteer tutors to help others improve their reading IF you enjoy reading and have some spare time on your hands, the team at MidCoast Council’s Libraries would love to hear from you. Expressions of interest are currently open for volunteer tutors to help others improve their reading, writing and English language skills through the ‘Better Reading, Better Communities’ program. Reading with confidence is a skill central to determining both our choices and chances in life. Whether it’s keeping up with the news, corresponding for work, undertaking studies, or for personal enjoyment, literacy underpins almost every aspect of our busy lives. Through its volunteer program, the MidCoast Council’s Libraries team connects tutors with people aged 8 to 75 years who are looking for support to reach their goals. “We’ve enjoyed seeing so many local residents benefit from the 'Better Reading, Better Communities' program, which has been in place for over 6 years”, explained Chris Jones, MidCoast Council’s Libraries Manager. “It’s not only students who reap the rewards; we’ve had such positive feedback from our generous volunteers about the great satisfaction they get in helping someone else to learn and grow.”

LAST Saturday, local resident, Mick Farnham celebrated his 70th birthday with family and friends at the Hawks Nest Golf Club with Mick’s long time friend, David Cazalet, an Elvis Presley impersonator, entertaining 105 guests who had travelled from Queensland, Coffs Harbour, Pokolbin, Central Coast and Sydney. David and Mick first met through Super K Mart, Casula in 1987 and together they shared some very special memories with other friends in attendance at the party. Family and friends were in the spirit of the function dressing to the Elvis Rock n Roll theme which included special guest, Marilyn Monroe, who sang Happy Birthday to Mick. Great photos were captured by Mick’s nephew, Les Farnham with Mick enjoying two very special moments when Elvis sang Return to Sender to granddaughter, Natasha and In the Ghetto which was dedicated to Mick’s mate, Stephen, who lost his life 49 years ago. Family and friends danced the night away to old time favourites - Jailhouse Rock, Viva Las Vegas, Edge of Reality and many more. Mick’s birthday cake was created by Heidi
Volunteer tutors should love reading, but personal skills and the desire to help others succeed are just as important. Tutoring takes place in a one-on-one environment in the Library, and hours can be tailored to meet your schedule. Opportunities to become a volunteer tutor are currently available at MidCoast Council’s Forster library, with free training and on-going support. “Our next tutor training course starts on Thursday 1 August, and involves 5 halfday sessions,” Chris said. “This is a free course that provides volunteers with everything they need to get started, guidance on selecting the right resources, and lesson planning tools.” Tutors are engaged as part of MidCoast Council’s Library volunteer program, and will be invited to attend regular professional development sessions to network and share ideas and learning with other tutors and

Ashleigh John recently wrote about one of the recommendations from the Australian Law Reform Commission’s review into family law that suggested that the Family Law Act (section 60CC) should be ‘slimmed down’. Today I am looking at another recommendation from the Commission: that the use of the term “equal shared parental responsibility” should be replaced by the term “joint decision-making about major long-term issues”. One of the terms of reference for the Commission was to consider making the Family Law Act more ‘user friendly’. And this recommendation sits squarely in that focus. Studies have shown that the concept of “equal shared parental responsibility” is misunderstood by the public – and leads to a misconception that there
is a presumption of ‘equal shared time’ with the children. It is certainly an issue that we find ourselves having to explain regularly. Given that ‘parental responsibility’ is principally about making decisions for the benefit of the children – requiring joint decision making about major long term issues (such as schooling or certain medical concerns) – it seems sensible to change the language to better reflect that. There is one slight catch; at the moment the focus of the Family Law Act is on “the child’s best interests” and ‘parental responsibility’ decisions are tied to that notion – so it remains to be seen whether any change in language here will be understood to still encompass the concept that the decision making needs to be in the child’s best interest.

It can be promoter of events and fundraiser for the benefit of the whole community. We are again well down the track organising the Myall River Festival and have a team of wonderful volunteers helping to coordinate the stallholders. There is a good balance of Arts & Craft, Clothes & Fashion, Jewelry, Hot Food, Gourmet food, NFP Community & Children’s specialty all covered. We are also happy to report that the entertainment spectacular, street theatre and main stage programs will (while secret for now) will be bigger and better this year on 26 October. While the Festival is an enormous contributor to our economy on that weekend it must be said that the main reason for the festival is to showcase our offerings for tourism year- round, not just a party for the day. NSW tourism is up some 18% over last year and we aim to target those families who are looking for holidays in a relaxed village
SHEARGOLD Property Developments, the developers of the Riverside project in Tea Gardens have recently been granted concept approval from the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, which was lodged back in November 2016. After acquiring the site, in December 2013, Sheargold decided to modify the Concept Plan from the one that the previous owner of the site, Crighton Properties, had lodged and was approved in 2013. The main aims of the modification were to reduce the development footprint, increase area of conservation lands and amend configuration of commercial lands. The Sheargold Property group said that the new plans improve environmental outcomes by reducing the overall project
development footprint, (by 12 ha or 10.4%) and increasing the biobank area dedicated to environmental conservation (by 10ha or 9.9%), which will increase the local koala habitat and will protect and enhance important areas of wetlands adjacent to the Myall River. This lengthy and expensive process was worth it, according to Sheargold Managing Director, Michael Sheargold. “We are both relieved and excited to receive this news after over 2 years waiting for our modified plans to receive the green light.” “I think our determination to see the modification approved shows our commitment to our vision for the site and also being a long-term investor and supporter of Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and the Mid

Special Happy Hour for Alan HAPPY Hour at Palm Lake Resort was pretty special last Friday evening with village resident, Alan Watkinson, celebrating his 90th Birthday with over one hundred other residents who Alan refers to as his ‘big family’. Alan was the first person to move into the village when it was known as The Hermitage back on 4 September 2007 when there were only six homes available for occupation. For many years Alan and his wife used to visit Tea Gardens on a regular basis to meet up with friends from Bateau Bay to play a round of golf together. On one of those visits to the area, they saw the sign advertising the village and decided to find out more information about the retirement village as they had been talking about downsizing from their home in Forster.

LET us consider the different circumstances that lead people to stay in tents. People in refugee camps, through no fault of their own, live in tents. Mellow hipsters (sipping chai and eating tofu burgers) hang out in luxury tents for the duration of a two-day music festival. These tents have cushions, solar-powered fairy lights, floral bunting and strategically placed harmonicas and banjos. They have a calming vibe, Mrs TK. Then there’s the tents owned by middleincome parents who have two highly-strung teenagers, a Commodore and a cashed-in BCF voucher. This family has gone from their spacious home, so spacious that they may not even run into each other for days on end, with all the mod-cons (you know, central heating, a media room, an ice dispenser, a liquor cabinet, multiple escape routes) to sharing a nylon pyramid on a patch of dirt with nothing for entertainment but each other and the dwindling light of a dying fire (an uncomfortable metaphor for those in the family bright enough to catch on). This situation may be fun for Bear Grylls types who are happy to drink their own urine and eat fried centipedes when the going gets tough, but the average suburban family will not cope. They will take out their misery on each other until a survival of the fittest (or the most sarcastic) Lord of the Flies scenario ensues. There is absolutely nothing wrong with separate family holidays, particularly when you have pubescent kids. Send them to a location hosted by professionals. You know, Troubled Teen Boot Camp or something similar. Send the husband on a reef trip. And you? Go to a place that has Transcendental or Vipassana or Vodka in its title.

MOST people over the age of 60 will remember exactly where they were when the first man walked on the moon. It was an event which stopped the world as grainy TV footage was relayed around the planet. Les Fellows knows exactly where he was on the momentous day as he was one of the small team of Aussies who made the lunar link-up possible. With the 50th anniversary of the event, the media is reliving the epic voyage and Les gives us the inside story. “I was one of the permanent team manning the radio telescope at Parkes,” he said. “There was no line of sight to NASA as they were blindsided by the earth's rotation so they asked us to help,” he added. “We broke every rule in the book,” Les said. “Despite a howling gale, our Director, John Bolton, instructed us to tilt the dish 'till it actually touched the ground to pick up the signal,” he said. “This was then relayed around the world.”

For their efforts, the Aussie team was rewarded with Certificates of Appreciation by NASA. Just four Aussies were on duty in 1970 at Parkes when a fire on board the ill fated Apollo 13 mission saw a desperate cry for help go out. 'Houston, we have a problem,' is a phrase still used today and was first spoken by astronaut James Lovell during this drama. Once again, the dedicated team at Parkes was able to connect the stricken craft to mission control, a feat which undoubtedly saved their lives. The vital role played by Les and the three other staff that day was forgotten until many years later when NASA officials presented them with medals made from the original launching platform. Both missions were turned into movies. An Apollo 11 film has just been released following 'The Dish' (2000) an Aussie classic starring Sam Neil.

nbn™ lands in Tea Gardens THE arrival of the nbn for the remainder of Tea Gardens will deliver huge opportunities for local homes and businesses to transform the way they operate. More than 3700 homes and businesses in Tea Gardens & Hawks Nest will be able to access the speedy nbn network via Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) technologies. Michael Marom, Telstra Regional General Manager for Northern NSW said the nbn is one of the most talked about digital developments ever to hit Australia, and its arrival in will mark the beginning of a new digital era. “Individuals, communities and businesses are becoming increasingly digital-dependent. We’re streaming more video content than ever, uploading huge amounts of data and, by 2021 households are expected to own an average of 30 connected smart devices. “The rollout of the nbn will help Telstra to support this surge in data demand and allow locals to make their households smarter and their businesses more efficient. “It means one of the kids will be able to stream Netflix on the tablet while another watches a movie on the Telstra TV, and the parents can be working online on the laptop, all at the same time with a reliable connection,” explains Mr Marom. Telstra is also reminding those living and working in Tea Gardens that switching to the nbn will not happen automatically. Cus-
tomers will have 18 months to contact their chosen network provider to arrange moving across to the new network, after which existing landline, data and internet services will be disconnected. “We want everybody in the Tea Gardens to be able to start benefitting from the nbn as soon as possible. So, now is the time to speak to your chosen network provider about kick starting the switch on process,” said Mr Marom. “Telstra has teams of dedicated nbn specialists online, on the phone and in-store
who will be able to help customers to determine the plan or bundle best suited to their needs. We also have teams on the ground to ensure that every member of Tea Gardens & Hawks Nest has the advice, support and confidence they need to get on board with the nbn.” Local residents will be able to visit the Telstra nbn Experience Van, where Telstra teams will be on hand to offer advice on how customers can get the most out of their new nbn connection. nbn-ready devices, such as Telstra TV and gaming consoles, will also be available to trial.

Deyonne Page was voted in as President, Judi Polak replaces Pam Gilchrist as a Vice President and Lynne Green continues in her position as Vice President. The rest of the Executive Committee remains unchanged, as have the other committees. Format for bowls was 3 games of two bowls Triples and a game of Fours just 12 ends bowled. Ingrid Luck, Jill McBride and Bette Saillard had a good "comeback" from being 8 down to just losing by 3 shots to Dawn Jones, Pam Gilchrist and Dot
