Almost two years ago she was diagnosed with a debilitating disease called scleroderma. It causes hardening of the skin and affects the internal organs like the heart, liver and kidneys. It is a life-threatening disease, for which there is no cure. Last year, Tamara and her family started a legacy to raise awareness and money for ongoing research to hopefully find a cure, they put on their walking shoes and walked over 470km (500,000 steps) from Narellan to Ariah Park (a little town in the Riverina) raising over $30,000. They have just begun on this year’s trip, and are on their way to Port Stephens They have raised the bar, and are in the process of walking further than before with 500km in two weeks from Port Macquarie to Narellan from 16 June 29 June. Tamara Kennedy told News Of The Area, “It will be an epic journey following the coastline, we will be climbing hills like we have never climbed before.” “It’s going to be an
challenge.” To put their trip into perspective, that is almost 40kms every day for 14 days. The equivalent of walking a marathon every day for two weeks. No easy feat, but it is nothing compared to what people living with Scleroderma go through every single day. MORE than a hundred members of the community gathered in Tea Gardens last week to hear from the powers that be, involved in the massive clean up from the container ship spill of Port Stephens earlier this month. Roads and Maritime Executive Director Maritime Angus Mitchell was joined by Pierre Sidorow, Business Development Manager, for the Varley Group, the contractors tasked with collecting the debris which has washed up from Coffs Harbour to Newcastle. As the meeting went on, it became very clear that the operation facing authorities was a massive job, on a huge scale and realistically could take months, if not years. Local RMS Officer, Tony Woodfield told News Of The Area, “I’ve done 2 thousand 2 hundred kilometres in just 12 days, most
of it in four-wheel drives, up and down beaches and that excludes the first couple of days, when the weather was appalling and just
too dangerous.” As we went to print, only two of the 83 containers which spilled from the YM Efficiency had been found, one at Yacaaba, the other on Fingal Island. The container ship itself was still being unloaded in Sydney, a painstakingly slow operation, due to the number of damaged containers on board. RMS Executive Director Angus Mitchell said, “Almost a third of an Olympic swimming pool of debris has been removed
from the water and shoreline.” “We know exactly what was in every container, from the manifest and we have no reason to believe the manifest isn’t correct,” Mr Mitchell said. “Once we can locate them, and we know what’s come ashore, then we have a better idea of what is potentially down there.” That then raised the questions, “Do we pick them all up, do we pick some of them up or just leave them and that could

A survey vessel was due to start operations, weather permitting this week, to accurately pinpoint the sunken containers. “In the past we’ve found the most damage is done in the first five days,” Mr Mitchell said. “In the right conditions, a shipping container can remain on the sea bed for a hundred years.” Once the survey is complete, fishermen and mariners will be notified of their exact location. To help in the salvage operation, the Community is being encouraged to continue reporting debris to the RMS on 13 12 36, selecting option 2.

In a recent Family Law Full Court case, it was not in dispute that the husband exercised control over his 99 year old father’s unit trust (UT) including directing agents on behalf of the UT, using the UT’s assets as security for his own personal borrowings; intermingling his funds with the funds of UT and, since 2002, treating the UT as if it was his own. It was the expectation of his estranged wife therefore that the assets of the UT should be included in the assets to be adjusted between the parties on settlement because the father’s UT was simply a puppet for the husband. The Full Court and the trial Judge however disagreed and found, that whilst the father remained
the owner of the UT, he was not a puppet of his son. The husband had some “lawful right to benefit from the assets of the trust” and controlled some of the dealings of the UT, but they were not satisfied that the UT was a device used by him for his sole benefit.
There is no authority in the Family Courts that hold that control alone without some lawful right to benefit from the assets of a trust is sufficient to permit the assets of the trust to be treated as property of the party who has that control. In this instance, the Court did however make a substantial adjustment of the remaining property in favour of the wife due to the UT being a financial resource available to the husband.

WAY back in May 1901, the first Australian Parliament was opened by Prince George, who would later go on to become King George the fifth. Much has changed since then, including the venue for Federal Parliament which began its sitting days in Melbourne before moving to Canberra. But the basics remain the same and our children now get to learn the intricacies and formalities of Government in the classroom. Last week, Tea Gardens Public School held its 29th School Parliament Opening Ceremony. Among the invited guests,
Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie and State Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington. ”The school parliament, conducted with all the formalities, is a unique initiative that allows students to have a voice in what happens at school,” Ms Washington said. “I congratulate His Excellency Governor General (aka principal Mark Clemson) and his Senate (the teachers) for continuing this impressive tradition.” “I was pleased to see the school’s Parliament in action, with the Speaker of the House calling for motions from the previous meeting to be presented and debate, with

Service Centre back on track THE construction of a Highway Service Centre at Bulahdelah is one step closer after getting the nod of support at MidCoast Council’s Strategic Committee meeting held at Forster last week. In a unanimous decision, the Councillors in attendance voted in favour of the proposal proceeding beyond the initial planning stage, subject to further work being carried out including a review of the economic impact on the Bulahdelah community. Cr Roberts, who declared
a conflict of interest and left the meeting, and Crs Christensen and Pontin who were absent, did not vote. In order for the land near Bulahdelah Golf Club to be rezoned for the development, Council will now complete an internal assessment of the planning proposal application and prepare a report in relation to seeking a gateway determination. Council will also advise the Roads and Maritime Services that it will be reviewing the 2004 Great

He also said revitalising the town centre is an integral part of the project. “We will be doing everything we can to channel people into the town, signposts and flyers for every business, and signs encouraging people to ‘stop, revive, survive’ by the river,” he said. “We will also be landscaping the riverfront and streetscape the main road, Bulahdelah will be sparkling.” Speaking with News Of
The Area, MidCoast Deputy Mayor Katheryn Smith said, “It is a positive outcome, and while there is still a bit of work to be done, Council looks forward to the Development Application”. The Service Centre proposal is stage one of a larger project which includes a hotel complex and 200-lot residential subdivision.

Museum Funding Boost BULAHDELAH Courthouse Museum has received a $2,000 NSW Government grant to construct 20 self-guided tour stations in the grounds of the popular facility. The volunteer-led museum is one of 11 NSW community museums selected to receive funding from the Government’s arts, screen and culture agency, Create NSW. Bulahdelah Historical Society President Kevin Carter said although the museum is currently only open on Saturdays, the new tour stations, accompanied by a brochure explaining the historic objects and artefacts, will enable people to visit every day. “The grounds hold all sorts of items relevant to the history of the area including log dobbies, old ship boilers and fossil rocks, but without some type of interpretive information, you wouldn’t know what they were,” he said. “The funding is going to
give us the opportunity to have a sign next to each item and brochures on the walls enabling people to learn as they have a look around.” Kevin said the self-guided tours will be another “selling point” for the town which continues to attract increasing numbers of visitors each year. Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead announced the funding last week which comes from the Volunteer Museum Small Grants Program to facilitate vital improvements for volunteerrun museums. Mr Bromhead said the selfguided tours are a ‘brilliant idea’ and congratulated the committee for their initiative. “Bulahdelah Courthouse Museum is a fantastic part of the community and it’s wonderful to know that this support will lead to some valued improvements,” he said. “This investment is very welcome, and I look forward to seeing the results.”

has been fast and efficient. During a community presentation by clean-up contractor Varley and the NSW Department of Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) an outline of what has been done, and what the continuing effort will be, in relation to the 81 containers which are presumed to now be sitting on the seabed in depths estimated to be up to 120 metres was provided. Angus Mitchell the State Marine Pollution Controller outlined that the debris collected so far had come the 83 containers lost at sea and potentially another 53 containers which were damaged in the incident. He also noted that while 83 containers was a significant number to be lost that 10,000 containers are lost annually across the globe. Future planning includes seeking vessels
with capabilities to identify and map containers on the sea bed, investigations will be based on computer modelling. Bob Baldwin spokesperson for Varley told News Of The Area, “We believe that we have collected 90-95 percent of the debris with the remaining debris located in inaccessible pockets which will require specialist teams and possibly workers abseiling cliff faces to finalise the clean-up.” He believes that the weather will dictate when will be collected. Varley has collected the debris focusing on leaving the beaches and waterways of Port Stephens and the Mid North Coast better than they were before the incident. Locals have expressed concerns around the foam washed up and were
relieved that it is not the type of plastic that breaks into micro plastic, it has been identified as yoga mats, not polystyrene. It is anticipated that more debris will eventually wash ashore, potentially for a period extending up to ten years, however Angus Mitchell of RMS gave assurances that the local Councils, nor the State Government would not be called on to foot the continuing clean-up bill. Local businesses that lose trade as a result of the container incident, including fishermen, can lodge a claim against the YM Efficiency. It is unlikely that the remaining containers will be recovered, rather the containers may be left, forming man made reefs. The public is urged to keep reporting all debris sighted to RMS on 131236.

Margaret told News Of The Area the sessions encourage children to become active readers and future users of the library. “I love children and I love reading to them, for years I have been thinking that it would be nice to have a little session at the library for young children with some books and some music,” she said. “I took my grandchildren to one at Maitland Library and I thought this is something that we could do at our library.” The Storytime sessions kicked off last Thursday with an enthusiastic group of youngsters, including children from Bulahdelah Preschool, who enjoyed the ‘Day and Night’ themed activities together. Margaret said the sessions are currently held on Thursday mornings on a fortnightly basis and are open to all youngsters in the community. “We are hoping to have many, many more and hold them every week instead of fortnightly,” she said. “It’s just great to get the community involved.” To find out more about the Storytime program, contact Bulahdelah Library on 49974764.

My son just got his L plates. I am absolutely terrified about taking him for driving lessons but I can’t afford private lessons for him to get his hours up. What should I do? Mrs PA, Medowie Dear Mrs PA, I HAVE never understood the concept of parents teaching their kids to drive. Putting your teenager behind the wheel when you have no access to the brake just seems like sheer insanity to me. It was certainly sheer insanity when my parents taught me to drive. I ended up mounting the gutter one time and clearing the scene of all pedestrians. It took me three attempts to get my licence, which was humiliating and expensive. On the second attempt I would have passed, but when I parked too close to the car next to me and asked the instructor to crawl across and get out my side, it was all over Red Rover. Even now, after decades of driving, I still can’t reverse park or do an effective hill start (once I had to get a policeman to do my hill start for me – I wish I had made that up, but it is true). Honestly, I have no idea what to do at those four-way intersections where there is a stop sign on each corner. I make eye-contact with the person opposite or do a funny stop-start movement, similar to when you move the wrong way when being approached by a person and you end up doing a strange little dance with them, until one person takes control. How about you strike a deal with your son and go halves in the cost of private lessons, at least until he knows the basics. If he can’t afford this, then he probably can’t afford a car anyway. Alternatively, there is a lot of land in Medowie, so maybe start in a paddock and work your way up to the backstreets. I wish you lots of luck. Carpe diem, Jasminda

The Roos committee and team would like to thank Scott Barry from Karuah Landscaping Supplies very much for the excellent work that he has done at the oval. Fixing up the driveway so that you can now come into the
games. Cleaning up around the trees in the carpark to make easier and safer to park your car as well as fixing up the drains. Thanks again Scott. Karuah kicked off and we the first to put points on the board 15 minutes in. Matt Croese scored and Aiden Bills converted 6/0. Clarencetown countered 2 minutes later to equal the score 6 all. The metre men in the first half for the Roos
were Tyson Peters, Justin Anderson, Mitch O’Bryan, Trent Saunders, Jake Blanch, Jack Fleming, Matt Croese, Daniel Evans, Ben Feeney, Mitch Turvey, Simis Asomua and Adam Crampton. THERE’s an old saying, ‘Less is More’ and it’s that philosophy which is behind a workshop at the Tea Gardens Library this Friday called ‘De-Clutter Your Life’. The event has been organised by MidCoast Council and it’s not just about getting rid of the old to make way for the new. “It’s about learning how to declutter your home and your life so that you have space for the things that matter,” Librarian Chris Shelly said. “You’ll pick up tips and skills at the workshop to help you learn how to prevent the clutter from returning.” And it’s not just about the materialistic clutter. The event is aimed at clearing a space in the mind as well.

PREPARATIONS are in full swing for this year’s Myall River Festival in Tea Gardens. Sponsors are being called for and stallholders are now able to apply to attend the big day out on Saturday 13 October. This year’s festival is all about family fun, with a demonstration of woodchopping, pony rides and prawn eating competitions, just to name a few of the events on offer. “We want to attract
tourists and locals alike to the Festival and make this year a beginning of an iconic destination for all to enjoy,” President of the Chamber of Commerce, Graham Lang said. There’ll be the usual favourites on offer as well, from the dog show, to the fireworks finale. Vintage cars will also make a return and the ducks will be back to race on the river as well. There’ll be great music and great food as well. Graham Lang said, “We’ve reduced the cost
for stall holders this year to encourage more small businesses and home based businesses to come to the Festival.” For a 3 x 3 stall, it costs just $60 for small and home based businesses.
