With the heat comes bushfires so it’s a timely reminder that our Tea Gardens/Pindimar Rural Fire Brigade is looking for new members. “The Brigade is currently in new member recruitment mode,” Brigade Captain Helmut Panhuber told News Of The Area. “We are calling on the community if they have the time to come along to the brigade and see what we do and whether they can assist.”

Even the simple action of making a phone call or sending a text message can have serious consequences. It is a criminal offence under Australian law to use a mobile telephone in a way that is menacing, harassing or offensive. This can include the method of use, the content of the communication, or both. Repeated, unwanted calls can amount to harassment under this law. When determining whether a communication is menacing,

harassing or offensive, the standards of an ordinary reasonable person are applied. A person convicted of an offence under this law is liable to a maximum penalty of imprisonment for 3 years.

There can be further civil consequences as well, such as Apprehended Violence Orders and family law implications depending on the relationship between the caller / texter and the recipient. So before sending those text messages, or making that phone call, consider the consequences, and remember…never drink and dial.

Paul told News of the Area, “I generally make over thirty Christmas Puddings each year and enjoy handing them out to my neighbours and friends to enjoy over the Christmas Festive Season.” “I really love Christmas and by giving and sharing with my neighbours and friends, it gives me great pleasure when they open

their front door to be presented with a homemade treasure,” Paul added. This year, Santa and his helper dressed for the occasion, and instead of pulling a sleigh, they improvised and decorated a wheelbarrow and filled the barrow to the brim with the yet to be tasted sumptuous Christmas Puddings. No doubt there were a few refreshments required before they set off on their journey and a few more refreshments were offered along the way.

New volunteers join in picnic By Adrienne INGRAM THE Myall Koala and Environment Group welcomed several new members to its annual Christmas dinner by the river in Tea Gardens. Almost thirty members of the group enjoyed seafood from Hook N Cook Café despite blustery evening winds. President Jill Madden said it was especially good to welcome several new members to the 150-strong environment group. “Our volunteers do great work throughout the year protecting local flora and fauna, so it’s very good to see more people involved,” she said. “We’re always on the lookout for active and committed members.”

CHRISTMAS time is perhaps the most exciting time of the year, especially if your family and friends have little ones to share the wonder with. Santa Claus with his sack full of toys and goodies is of course every child’s favourite and a special challenge for parents of young believers. Trimming the tree and decorating your home can bring so much excitement and magic to the holiday season. What will you hide in the Christmas stockings along with socks and jocks? Where do you hide the sleigh bells that your child will hear tinkling and how do you get them off to sleep on Christmas Eve, so you can put the gifts under the tree? Creating magic at Christmas tests every parent’s metal. Where do you hide the gifts? How do you fit in all the shopping? If Santa has a list of every girl and boy that’s been naughty and nice every mum and dad out there has a list of epic proportion to have everything just right for the

silly season. DOORS opened this week at the brand-new cafe in Hawks Nest, The Nest Cafe. Situated on the same site as the IGA, the new addition to Tuloa Avenue, will provide a new menu and atmosphere option for Hawks Nest residents and visitors. An official opening event on is planned for this Saturday 23 December, from 9am. The Nest Cafe Manager, Anthony Gilbert, said the

Mrs LC, Soldiers Point Dear Mrs LC, I’M not sure what your issue is with this fine Christmas tradition. What could be more enjoyable than standing in a queue that spans the entire circumference of the local food court with other screaming . . . I mean smiling mums and dads and their well-behaved offspring, all waiting patiently for their special time with the man in red? What could possibly bring more goodwill than joining together as babies howl at being placed on a strange man’s lap, photographers dance with stuffed toys to encourage the money shot, mums wipe spittle from toddlers and dads discuss how much they love forking out for cellophane, solar lights, baubles, LOL Surprise toys, hams, turkeys, prawns, cherries, drones, Lego sets, remote control cars with no batteries, trampolines that need an engineering degree to set up, with stealth, on Christmas Eve, and those boxes of toilet rolls wrapped in gold paper that contain a paper hat and a choking hazard (better known as Bon Bons). My children have always been forced to endure the great tradition of a Santa photo, particularly now they are surly teenagers. The one exception was last year when the queue was worse than every other year combined. Thankfully, the bearded man in the queue behind me had a similar body mass index to jolly old Mr Claus. I asked him to don one of the Santa hats I had in my shopping trolley, took a quick snap with my IPhone, and tried to ignore my kids as they whined “how embarrassing” all the way home. I do believe, Mrs LC, that the answer could be a new innovation that just occurred to me. Let’s call it the Santa Line Sitter (SLS). It involves paying obliging teenagers $10 to babysit your children until they reach position number two in the Santa queue. They’ll be happy, because they can stay glued to their devices, and you can do all your Christmas shopping. A quick text message notification and you can casually return to the queue, get the photo (or the 15 photos, digital pic, fridge magnets, postcards and Christmas mug upsize version) and be off on your merry way. The teenagers could be rated via an app, to make sure they are fine, upstanding queue sitters. I think, with a bit of tweaking, it’s a winner. Carpe diem, Jasminda

We had a busy Christmas meeting holding nominations for the 2018 committee, raffling off 6 Christmas hampers and a large canvas print. The lucky winners of the Raffles are as follows, Kris Whiteley, Doreen Howell, Loretta Baker, Judy McGavock, Hilary Gall, Margaret Peacock and Robyn Matthews, congratulations to you all. We also had Sue Ward and Sara James recite Christmas

Each year, over a hundred people have packed into the Foyer to share some Christmas cheer, sing some carols and have some fun at the year’s end. CRYING together is so less painful than crying alone. Losing a loved one is difficult at the best of times, however, Christmas is especially difficult. After attending a seminar on Grief and Loss at Christmas by Doris Zagdanski, a leading figure

in modern day grief and loss, I walked away with some thoughts on dealing with grief, not limited to Christmas, for the entire grieving process. There is no set time for grieving to finish, grief can take years if not decades to come to terms with. According to Ms Zagdanski, “You are the

600 sizzling sausages barbecued by the Lions Club, glittery craft, face painting and balloon sculptures organised by the local Blue Light Committee and nonstop music and caroling ensured there was plenty of fun for the young and old. With the whole community coming together, Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade held their annual lolly run in the park as part of the Carols this year. There were beaming smiles all round as Santa and brigade members distributed huge sacks of sweet treats to the well-behaved girls and boys. Organising committee member Meredyth Rae said

the exceptional talent of the performers and the huge turn-out from the community made the Carols a very special night. “As our very first Carols in the Park, the night has gone brilliantly,” she said.

“There were a few glitches, but the night was all about the community enjoying the spirit of Christmas together.” Meredyth said the committee hopes the community Carols will become an ongoing event.

Top Results By Daniel SAHYOUN SHOCKED, stoked and excited is how Kaitlyn Gregory and Darcy Harris said they felt when they received their HSC results last week. And the pair from Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) had every reason to be thrilled, with their top marks earning them a place on the 2017 HSC Distinguished Achievers list. Kaitlyn’s results put her in the top one percent of the State in the Standard English Course and the top two percent for Hospitality. Darcy scored an almost perfect mark in Ancient History, placing him in the highest band possible for the course. Kaitlyn said she received

her results via a text message from the NSW Education Standards Authority at 5.45am last Thursday morning. “I was really shocked, I didn’t expect two Band 6’s,” she said. “I shouted a bit, had a second look to make sure it was right, woke Mum and Dad up and then shouted a bit more.” For Darcy, the day was a little more relaxed, choosing to receive his results online. “I forgot the results were coming out and I was at work all day, so I didn’t check them until 5.30pm,” he said. “But I was pretty stoked when I saw the Band 6.” Kaitlyn and Darcy said many of their classmates also achieved strong results, with

Bowlers at Karuah had re-lived their youth and its waiting over the last 2 months, waiting for their green to come back from its annual rest. Last Saturday was the day, the weather was good, 40 bowlers were ready, the grass was lush, the big day

FISHING: Last weeks fishing outing was very successful, with a variety of species caught. Darby was our overall winner catching bream, flathead, ludrick and a number of whiting. He has taken the best of species with a .33 whiting. Our runner up this outing was Andrew Sharp with only a few points the difference and he bagged some excellent bream. DARTS: An excellent turnout for darts this week with 15 teams competing and the eventual winners were Christine McKenzie and Trevor Peirson. The runners up were Lyn Peirson and Frog. The men’s high score was 134 by Frog and the ladies high score was 121 by Karen.

Twenty five bowlers attended with some special

guests joining the party for lunch. It was great to have Sunday Mixed Bowls stalwarts, Beverley Thrift and Barry Goode, accompanied by his wife Joyce, attending. A SUCCESSFUL season for the Hawks will not be compromised by a lack of support from sponsors. Existing and new support are energetic about the Hawks direction. PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITY IN SOLDIERS POINT Optus plans to improve the telecommunications services in Soldiers Point and surrounding areas with the installation of a telecommunications facility at an existing site to improve coverage and mobile phone services in the area. YOUNG local athlete Keira McGregor has just returned from her first International competition with more medals to her credit. The 11 year old student from Medowie Christian School was competing in the Pacific Games alongside 4,000 other young athletes from 15 countries. Keira’s results were remarkable for one so young. She came second in the long jump and received silver medal. In the 4 x 100 relay Keira brought the NSW team home in record breaking time to take out the Gold Medal. She had 2 other relay events where NSW also won.

“I wish to thank my coach Charles Ringuet for the hundreds of hours spent training through heat and rain over the past four years,” Keira said.
