WITH Very High (Level 3) water restrictions beginning on Monday 11 November, MidCoast Council is warning there are tougher restrictions on the way soon, unless decent rainfall occurs in our catchment areas. "Right now is the driest conditions in over 130 years with the lowest average river flows from 75 years of records. We are facing the most severe water shortage across the MidCoast region ever recorded. We will require everyone to assist in conserving water, so together we can get through this drought," said Council's Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott. Using weather forecasts and water usage modelling, MidCoast staff are planning for more severe water shortages ahead. At this stage, it is possible that a further increase in water restrictions to Severe (Level 4) will be needed in December.

With the number of ‘fur-babies’ on the rise, the question of what happens to Fido in the case of a relationship breakdown is a common one. Many ‘fur-parents’ are devastated to learn that their beloved Fido will not be treated as a child under the Family Law Act and have the usual parenting considerations around time with each parent apply to them; but rather that the law treats them as nothing more than a chattel! When the fur-parent then turns to the Family Law Act and discovers that the Court has an obligation “as far as practicable” to make orders that will “finally determine the financial relationship between parties” it is quickly apparent that this is inconsistent with any ongoing order for shared care of Fido. As a result, couples are starting to document their
agreement for Fido’s care arrangements in the event of any separation, while the family remains intact. As Fido is legally deemed ‘property’ for the purpose of the Family Law Act, couples can enter into a pre-nuptial agreement – known in Australia as a Financial Agreement – at any time before or during their relationship to agree as to who Fido will live with in the event of separation. Currently, the law of Financial Agreements in Australia is such that these documents are quite technical, and require careful consideration and drafting if they are to be upheld if challenged; so while achievable, it can prove to be an expensive task. Perhaps in the future the law will catch up and furbabies will find their place in the Family Law Act, but until then we will continue to think outside the square, for the sake of Fido.

Great Lakes Area District Award goes to Kelson Hawkins The Awards night was held on 6 November at the McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle and Kelson’s Award was presented to him by Merv Curran, Competition Director, with all the other top performing students in each region. In addition to receiving this prestigious Award, Kelson has been selected for the Newcastle Permanent Annual Mathematics Camp with only 152 invitations being extended to the top performers and with only 90 students being accepted. The Camp is sponsored by the Newcastle Permanent where students rotate through a program of Mathematical workshops and physical recreation activities which include archery, climbing, ropes course, Frisbee golf or outdoor problem solving tasks. Upon receiving confirmation that he had secured a spot in the Camp, Kelson said, “I

This competition is one of the largest competitions of its kind in Australia and offers Awards to the top performers in each region. Koalas now you see them, when and where? By Sandra CLARK DURING a 5-year period 2013 to 2018 in the Southern Highlands of NSW as a result of spotlighting, tracking and scat investigations it is documented some 3000 Koalas live and “commute” in that region. This represents 10% of the total known Koala population. Wildlife Ecologist George Madani presented just one week's worth of findings from the coastal area of Karuah north to Seal Rocks to a group of interested locals on Thursday afternoon in Tea Gardens. Nine individual Koalas were located. George was instrumental in initially catching and then tracking the Southern Highland Koalas. His experiences and knowledge gained from that project, have revealed behavioural attributes previously unknown before in Koalas being discovered and shared with the group on Thursday. “November is breeding season; Koalas are on the lookout for a mate, so males are
on the move and quite vocal about it.” George explained. “Now is the time you may hear a quite different vocal sound, especially at night, not that of a bird or marsupial: this is the prime time to look out for Koalas,” said George. It is hoped with the land available to Koalas in our region, that a gene flow of individuals will remain to keep them healthy and that in future trees remain as a source of food, nutrition and shelter. Planning for an older local population MIDCOAST Council is seeking community input into a region-wide strategy to plan for our rapidly ageing population. Your views can be provided via an online survey on Council’s website, with hard copies also available on request, right up until Friday 20 December. “With 53% of us aged over 50 and a sharp increase in the proportion of older residents over the next few years, it's important that we plan effectively for our ageing population, and understand what the issues are for our older residents,” said Council’s Interim Manager – Community Strengthening, Chris Jones. This first ageing strategy for the new MidCoast Council aims to provide appropriate planning to ensure that our community

environments, infrastructure and services are appropriate for older people in our communities. With a general shift from institutionalised aged care to ageing in place, it is important that the community is prepared to accommodate this change. Ageing in place is more than an older person having the ability to remain at home as they age - it's about the neighbourhood, available local services, transport services and social inclusion. In early 2020, it’s planned to hold focus groups across the region which will address in detail the issues identified by the survey. The draft ageing strategy will then be prepared and provided to Council for adoption. You can complete the survey now by visiting www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/seniors. Sydney to Hobart Yacht fleet in Cabbage Tree Island Race

THE Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race will celebrate its 75th running in 2019 with 67 yachts taking part in the Sydney to Cabbage Tree Island Race, off Port Stephens on 9 November. The 180nm Cabbage Tree Island Race is sailed by many crews in readiness for the great yacht race. Legendary Australian sailor Gordon Ingate recalls, “I have sailed the Cabbage Tree Race at least six times.” It promises to be a spectacular start in Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day with this year’s large number of 170 entrants. In 1950 veteran yachtsman Gordon Ingate sailed in his first Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race skippering the sloop Jasnar. “In 1965 I won the Cabbage Tree Race which gave us the points needed to be the
first Australians to compete in the Admirals Cup, Internationally against the Americans and Europeans. We went over expecting to learn a thing or two and finished up in second place, paving the way for an eventual Australian Admirals Cup win in 1967,” said Gordon. The prevailing southerly wind for this year’s Cabbage Tree Race saw maxi’s Infotrack and Wild Oats XI retire with gear failure leaving line honours to Black Jack. “If the southerly blows up it can be really tough going on the way back. I can remember one year a 70ft yacht washed ashore being dragged off Anna Bay,” said Gordon. “I am 93 years old now and I don’t sail as much these days,” he said. An Aussie Boxing day just wouldn’t be the same without the Test Cricket kicking off at the MCG and after 75 years the Sydney to Hobart fleet setting sail out of the Heads.

There were 4 very close games with the teams of Dale Cameron and Kayelene Pearson recording a draw of 16 all and the two teams of Leigh Hunt and Doug Naylor losing by 1 point each. The overall score was then contested by the remaining 4 teams. The outstanding Tea Gardens team of Dennis Longman managed a substantial lead ensuring that Palmlake Tea Gardens were victorious on the day. At completion of the day all teams retired to the Club Rooms for the usual celebratory drinks or commiserations. The 64 Bowlers together with 50 team supporters then partook of a hearty lunch which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. All players and supporters look forward to our next challenge early in the
