Elly-Rae’s advice for avoiding being attacked by the plovers is to walk under an open umbrella. Local Resident Keith Godwin said he is frequently attacked by the birds when mowing his lawn. “You have to be careful because they come from behind and you can’t see them,” Mr Godwin said. “They appear to be more aggressive this year, they are swooping everyone, it’s a major concern especially with kids around,” he added. Mr Godwin said the plovers are currently nesting next to his house and they return to the same area each year. A spokesperson from WIRES told News Of The Area plovers are very protective of

The native birds appear to be out in force with their raucous squawking alarm alerting us day and night that they are nesting nearby. Thirteen-year-old EllyRae Banks said the ground dwelling spurred winged birds are aggressively swooping at people, other birds and animals in the streets around her home. “They’re everywhere in Bulahdelah and it always seems like there are more each year,” she said. “It makes it difficult to walk anywhere without being swooped by one and they come close to your head when they do.”

a service 365 days a year and when we cancel due to bad weather, we get abused,” said Adrian. But there are historic and ongoing issues which are causing commuter confusion. The timetable board at Tea Gardens doesn’t match up with the
services provided. MidCoast Council provided the timetable several years ago, but very little of it’s information is now correct. The timetable states that services run every half hour, they don’t. There are three mobile numbers to contact to make a booking or check whether the service is running or what time the ferry is due.
Two of those numbers now don’t apply as Ferrylink is no longer operational. “The ferry service is vital to businesses in the townships of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest,” Mark McCormick, President of the Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce, told the News Of The Area. “We need to have the ferries running regularly,

Media spokesman for the MidCoast Council told the News Of The Area that the new manager in that area had no intricate knowledge of the ferry service for Tea Gardens and that the person who does, was away.

THE comedy play, Just Do The Best You Can, is ready to go. Rehearsals are almost complete, the stage has been set up, and the actors are ready to entertain the audience. Boatie Plans for Great Lakes
By Margie TIERNEY ATTENTION, lovers of our Great Lakes waterways. If you’re a boatie, kayaker or paddle boarder then put a cross on your calendar for a series of upcoming community meetings. Three draft boating infrastructure plans will be on display for public comment next week, the efforts of a partnership between the NSW Government’s Roads and Maritime Services and the Royal Haskoning consultants commissioned by the MidCoast Council. The draft plans include Boating Development Plans for Nerong and North Arm Cove and the Foreshore Development Plan for Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.
Gordon Grainger from the Myall Coast River Action Group told the News Of The Area, “We’ve highlighted a number of projects in our submission, including dredging, launching ramps and inadequate marina facilities.” If you have plenty of time on your hands to read the entire draft proposals then head to www.midcoast.nsw. gov.au/DraftBoatingPlans. There are also simplified concept plans for each location on the website. Bushfires blaze in Booral
JUST a few days into the Bushfire Danger Period, fire crews were called to multiple blazes in Booral and the surrounding area last week. A spokesperson for Great Lakes Rural Fire Service (RFS) said the bushfires in Washpool Creek Road, Blue Gum Road and Mount Ebsworth took several days to contain.
Fire crews from around the region were involved in controlling the blazes which damaged more than 480 hectares of land. The RFS spokesperson said there was no damage to property or homes and the cause of the fires were under investigation. The fires are a reminder CONTINUED Page 6

MIDCOAST Council will be represented by a large delegation at the Local Government NSW Conference which begins on Sunday 16 October in Wollongong. The conference is described as the pre-eminent event of the local government year and will be attended by Administrator John Turner, Interim General Manager
Glenn Handford and seven members of the Local Representative Committee (LRC). NSW Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Local Government Paul Toole will speak at the conference with sessions on natural resources and infrastructure planning included. MidCoast Council has confirmed it will cover the costs for each of their representatives which includes the $899 registration fee, $110 for the Reconciliation and ALGWA Breakfasts and $154 for the Conference Gala Dinner in addition to travel and accommodation expenses. According to MidCoast Council, funds from the Councillors Professional
Development budget from the three merged Councils will be utilised for the conference. Former Greater Taree City Council Mayor Paul Hogan has publicly criticised MidCoast for sending the large contingent stating it is a “great waste of time and ratepayers money.” Speaking with News Of The Area, Mr Hogan said the LRC members “are not Councillors and should not be presenting themselves at this conference.” “They weren’t elected, they are only selected people and it’s unfair to the ratepayers of MidCoast Council,” he said. “If the LRC members want to attend, they should pay their own way.” Mr Hogan also said,
“There is no point in the LRC members attending because they cannot vote.” MidCoast Council has confirmed that Mr Turner is the only representative who is eligible to vote on motions. The LGNSW rules prevent delegates of newly amalgamated councils from voting, however under special arrangements made for this year’s conference, Administrators of newly merged councils will have voting rights. The LRC members attending the conference are Kathryn Bell, Leigh Vaughan, Katheryn Smith, Len Roberts, Jan McWilliams, Carol McCaskie and Karen Hutchinson. The conference runs from 16 - 18 October 2016.

HIGHER School Certificate (HSC) examinations commence this week for the record number of students enrolled in HSC courses across the State. More than 70,000
students will sit the first exam, English Paper 1 on Thursday 13 October. Bulahdelah Central School Year 12 Advisor Casey Connell said it is important for students to take care of themselves and remain calm on the day of their exams. “Have a good night’s sleep, eat something before the exam and drink plenty of water,” she said. “It’s definitely important

to stay focused on the task and not stress about the result.” Ms Connell told News Of The Area there are many strategies that can help students relax including listening to music, going for a walk or reading a book. “Meditation and breathing exercises can also be helpful,” she said. “It’s going to be different for each individual, it’s just finding what works for you.” Year 12 student Bonnie Mirisch said finding the balance between study and leisure time was the key to remaining calm. “It’s important to concentrate on one thing at a time and have lots of breaks,” she said. “I’ve been making notes and working through practice questions, but I’ve also enjoyed some time at the beach and shopping with friends.” Fellow student Olivia Gillett said she took advantage of revision sessions with teachers during the school holidays. “Being with helpful teachers and studying with friends is a relaxed and social

ALL roads lead to Karuah this Saturday 15 October for the annual Oyster and Timber Festival. There’s something for everyone, from
woodchopping events to junior fishing competitions, market stalls, a duck race and of course the oysters. “We have a big display, we have all different growing methods on show,” Oyster farmer Steve Cole, told the News Of The Area. Local suppliers, Steve and brother Dean also have a variety of oyster concoctions
for the connoisseur, from Japanese style to Au Naturale. But if you’re really into your oysters, then take a punt and enter the all important oyster eating competition. “You put your name in the barrell and if it’s pulled out you get the chance to compete to be the quickest person to eat a dozen oysters in the quickest time,” said Steve.

NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said preparing for bushfires is easier than people may think. “It starts with simply talking to your family about what you would do if a bushfire was to start nearby,” he said. “These fires don’t discriminate. Fatal Jet Ski Crash THE small community of Nerong is still coming to terms with a tragic boating accident that claimed the life of a 54-year-old female resident of the village and left two others injured last week. Emergency services were called to Nerong, South of Bulahdelah just after 5.30pm on Friday 7 October following a collision between a boat and jet ski on the Nerong Inlet. Local woman Danielle Taylor was driving the jet ski at the time and died at the scene. An eight-year-old family friend was a passenger on the jet ski when the collision occurred and sustained a broken leg. The young boy was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital for surgery and was reported to be in a stable
condition. Police report the 46-yearold male skipper of the boat was also flown to John Hunter Hospital where he received treatment for a broken nose and ribs and was later released. Local police attended the scene and assisted with the recovery of the damaged jet ski and boat which are currently being held for forensic examination. Police have also interviewed witnesses but the cause of the fatality is still to be determined. Specialists from the Marine Area Command and detectives from Manning/ Great Lakes are continuing the investigation. Marine Area Command Superintendent Mark Hutchings said it was the early stages of a complex investigation. “Specialist marine

MORE than 2000 medicine brands on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) became cheaper on 1 October, some by as much as $20 per script. Bulahdelah Pharmacist Manuel Matta said most of the commonly used medicines are covered under the PBS and qualify for the price drop. “Medications for diabetes, blood pressure, heart medications and epilepsy are the main categories and now have a reduction of about 10–15 percent off the normal
price for non-concession card holders,” he said. “For each prescription, patients could probably save around $5 per month on average.” Mr Matta told News Of The Area the reduction in the cost of the PBS medicines will not affect patients who are eligible for concessions. “Concession card holders will continue to pay $6.20 per script for most PBS medicines,” he said. Minister for Health Sussan Ley said the reductions are
the result of the PBS Access and Sustainability Package reforms and will deliver savings for both consumers and taxpayers. “I encourage consumers to visit the website and be fully informed about the steps the Government is taking to ensure all Australians have access to affordable medications when they need them,” Minister Ley said. The wind was quite strong from the south-west making bowling very interesting. Both greens were in use with the grass green coming back up to speed. It was a pairs game that won the money with popular Mr. Nice Guy, Peter Jones partnering a new member, Greg Pearson late from the Tuggeranong Vikings Club in Canberra, to take top money on +42. In second place was the team of David Garcia, Peter Gurney and Bill Whalan. They finished with a very creditable +31. Lucky losers were; Harry Haubin/George Winter, Peter King and Doug Naylor. 7 October Congratulations to the Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club with their annual “Oncology Day” held today. This was their annual fundraiser for the Oncology Unit at the Mater Hospital in Newcastle.
The event was well supported by both Clubs and the wider communities of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. They raised a staggering $6,000.00. 9 October: The Morisset bowlers combined with the Tea Gardens Sunday Bowlers today to enjoy another day of bowling fellowship and friendship. In beautiful sunny weather 46 players took part and it was a combination team of; Bob Wright and Rose Courtney, from Morisset, and David Williams from Tea Gardens that had the lowest winning score to win the money. The Morisset bowlers enjoyed a barbecue lunch from cooks Ron Green and Barry Goode before heading home. I’m sure they enjoyed themselves! Next weekend 15/16 October the rescheduled Palm Lake Mixed Pairs will be held. There are already 20 teams entered which will be heartening to the organisers. With $2,300.00 in prize money there should be some entertaining bowls played. Entries are still being taken for the Club Mixed Pairs Tournament the following weekend. Friday 7th October: Oncology Day, Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club annual event to raise money for the Mater Calvary Newcastle Hospital. A great day was had by all who attended. Bowls, lunch, a tombola and an auction. This day is only possible due to the generosity of our local businesses and clubs who donated products and gift vouchers for the tombola, a heartfelt thank you to them. Also a big thank you to those members of the Women’s Bowling Club who donated gifts and to the ladies of the Executive Committee, Social Committee and all who helped out to make this day a success. Club President Robyn Webster presented a cheque for $6000 to Mater Calvary Newcastle Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. What a great community we live in.

Qualify for Holden Scramble Championship

A TEAM of Hawks Nest Golfers is celebrating a major coup, after qualifying for the finals of the Holden Scramble Championship. The Scramble is Australia’s largest and most successful pro-amateur events. “All teams have won just be getting to the final, having beaten roughly 8,000 teams at local level and 500 teams at the regional final,” Hawks Nest Head Professional, Andrew McCormack, told News Of The Area. The team , led by Andrew, is made up of all Hawks Nest staff, Club Manager Richard Simmers, Course Superintendent Bobby Lee, Ben Mills and Louis Steel. “The guys are off different handicaps, it’s a game of strategy,” Andrew told News Of The Area. “We won the regionals by just 0.2, scoring 17.5 under par,” he said. The team will now compete for the national title against 23 other teams from around Australia, travelling to the Twin Waters Golf Club on the Queensland Sunshine Coast next month. “It’s just a really good fun week up there, full of functions and theme nights,”said Andrew. The Holden Scramble Championship is now in it’s 25th year and marking the milestone of attracting 1 million participants.

Karuah RSL Men’s Bowls By Trevor DAVIES IN my very first report to this paper about Bowls at Karuah I detailed that our “Bowls Year” was cyclic. This being true now as then, I now have to report that we have reached the end of our 2016 cycle and bowling year. Our Karuah Club still uses a traditional grass green and urs is widely recognised as one of the best of its type on the mid coast. The excellent standard of our grass green is maintained throughout its heavy usage all year by an annual period of regrowth and renewal at this time each year. Each November/ December the Karuah Master Greenkeeper, Leon Post, works his magic on the green. He cores, top dresses, fertilises, rolls, waters, regrow’s and mows the grass and readies it for another year of heavy use during the next “Bowling Year”. This annual break from use is an investment in quality that in the next year delivers an as new, excellent

surface that will allow true, accurate, and consistent bowling all year. So, an entire club of like minded lawn bowlers, having competed together, trained and socialised together, and enjoying each other’s company, will be without a home green for almost 2 months. What on earth might they do after the clubs break up and presentation night at the end of October? Well the answer of course is “whatever they want to do”! Some have a complete break from bowls; some go on a road trip or a cruise and some just sit and watch the cricket! Many who do travel this great land however get to enjoy one of the greatest aspects of our wonderful sport, the hospitality and generous welcome of other bowlers. Bowling Clubs, although each a bit different, all have a policy of welcoming and including visiting bowlers from other clubs. This means that a travelling bowler will always be welcomed in other clubs
with open arms. With Bowls Clubs in almost every suburb, village and town, this means that bowlers are made universally welcome, wherever they go. It’s great to travel around this beautiful country, it’s even better to do it being welcomed and treated with hospitality and friendship by locals wherever you go. I have said before that Lawn Bowls is a great sport - It’s competitive yet friendly, skilful yet easy to learn; it’s played equally between different genders, age groups and can be played extremely well by people with a wide range of disabilities. Karuah bowling will recommence in the New Year. If you would like to try our inclusive yet challenging sport, free lessons are available every Sunday morning once the green reopens. We have club comps held every Tuesday and Thursday mornings and most Saturdays for bowlers, just call the RSL club to get your name on the list. Come give bowling a try! See you at Karuah.

We will be carrying out herbicide spraying during the months of October through to the end of December 2016 in various open drains and retention ponds within the entire Local Government area, to target grasses, reeds, annual and perennial Weeds. A FUN filled day for the Myall River Hawks Rugby League Juniors took place as they celebrated their Presentation Day in Hawks Nest over the weekend. There was a Tug-A-War competition, with the under 15’s taking out the best of three against the under 13’s side. “The slip and slide proved to be popular with all ages, as did the visit of the fire truck,” Registration Manager Kim Kirkpatrick told News Of The Area. And of course, the presentation of the all important awards, with special mention to the under 15’s on their Grand Final win. The President’s Award went to Will Smith, who also took out “Player of the Year.” Under 8’s received participation awards. Under 11’s Coach award went to Tye Carter, Players Player was awarded to Zane Piestch, Zane Ridley was named Best Attack, Most
Improved went to Daly Considine and Best Defence went to Sonny Braddick. Under 13’s Most Improved went to Paddy Nickel, Most Committed was awarded to Harry Plumber, Noah Battle won the Encouragement award, Coach’s Award went to William Markham and Player of the Year was won by Dylan Long. Under 15’s Best forward was Rex Shelton, Supporters Award went to Aiden Hawkins, Thomas Lidbury won Coach’s Award, Most Improved went to Jyson

Wolfram, Best Back was awarded to Bradley Marshall, Reefe Lesley won Player’s Player and Best Overall went to Reefe Lesley.
The Hawks will hold their Presentation Night on Friday 21 October at the Clare Castle hotel.
