Hats On Parade AN array of hats and bonnets loaded with piles of eggs, rabbits and fluffy feathers featured at Easter hat parades held at schools around the region last week. Homemade carrots, an Easter egg dispensing hat and others that defied gravity by extending high above the heads of tiny pupils were amongst the wacky and imaginative designs on show. Smiles were the order of the day as each class proudly paraded their creations of all shapes and sizes in front of parents, friends and relatives. Blue Light sparks community fun APRIL is shaping up to be an action-packed month for the Bulahdelah Blue Light Committee who will be hosting two events in the coming weeks. This month’s program kicks off with a kids Blue Light Disco on Friday 13 April, followed by a fun day for the whole community on Saturday 28 April. The disco will be held at the School of Arts Hall from 5.00 pm and police are looking forward to joining the young groovers on the dance floor and showing off their funky moves. Senior Constable Ash Ray said it will be a great way to celebrate the end of the school term. “It is all about getting the kids active and giving them a fun time in a safe environment,” he said. “There will be dancing, games and plenty of prizes on offer to keep the kids entertained.” The Blue Light program was launched in Bulahdelah last year and continues to go from strength to strength. Ash said the success of the program is due to the hard work

VINNIES in Tea Gardens celebrated another milestone last week, moving to a new store in the Myall Quays Shopping Centre. The Grand Opening marked months of planning and weeks of hard yacca by the volunteers who keep Vinnies open five and a half days a week. Team Leader, Carol Austin, told News Of the Area, “The store is a little smaller, but we’ve got a lot more storage room out the back which is great.” “We’ve had lots of positive comments.” “It looks more modern and it’s a better set-up,”Carol said. Vinnies first opened its doors in Tea Gardens in 2007 and since then at least 30 regular volunteers keep the Op Shop
open to the public. Carol Austin, herself a volunteer, has been working at Vinnies for more than two and a half years, but said some of the helpers have been there since day dot. Despite the smaller floor space, the Op Shop still offers everything from an evening dress, to a cup and saucer, book or bed sheet. Vinnies is opening from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday and on Saturday mornings from 9am until Midday. All money raised by Vinnies goes to providing emergency accommodation, food and the basics of life for people in crisis. So drop in, grab a bargain, and you’ll always get a smile in return.

Since the Civil Liability Act took effect in 2002, one of the defences to a claim for negligence is that an injury was suffered whilst a person was engaged in a “recreational activity” which was “dangerous”.
In 2009, a professional jockey was injured in a race fall at Queanbeyan. He sued another jockey, arguing he had ridden dangerously and that had caused his injuries.
The trial judge held the defendant had not ridden negligently and therefore did not breach any duty that was owed. The trial judge also found that professional horseracing was a “recreational activity” within the meaning of section 5K of the Civil Liability Act (and therefore that no claim could succeed even had the defendant jockey ridden dangerously). On appeal, the plaintiff argued the Court should adopt an earlier Tasmanian decision which suggested professional sport (as opposed to amateur) did not
meet the definition of recreational activity. The Court of Appeal disagreed. The statutory definition says that “any sport” constitutes a recreational activity. It would not draw a distinction between amateur and professional sports because that might lead to an unfair outcome in that a person might be liable for an injury caused to a professional sports person but, in precisely the same circumstances, would have no liability to an amateur. The appeal was therefore unsuccessful and the injured jockey did not recover any damages (but probably had a significant costs bill since the trial itself took almost three weeks).
The case does not establish any novel principle but makes clear that, at least in NSW, if an injury occurs from an obvious risk in “any sport” there will be real obstacles confronting an injured person seeking to recover damages from another participant: Goode v Angland [2017] NSWCA 311.

North Arm Cove 100 Years SPECIAL REPORT By John BLACKBOURN SUNDAY 6 May 1918 is the accepted date for when the Port Stephens waterfront village of North Arm Cove began life as Port Stephens City. The celebrated Canadian Town Planner Walter BurleyGriffin designed this location and presented his plan to the Stroud Shire Council on this date 100 years ago which included a railway line, government administrative area, a port location, all to be developed around his concept of circular roads surrounding important elements of the City, very much in the same way he had designed our National Capital of Canberra some 5 years or so, earlier. Of course this was not the first time when the area now known as North Arm Cove was
settled by people associated with the AA Company, just down the track at TAHLEE and Carrington where they were granted 1 million acres by the British Crown in 1824 and arrived in Port Stephens a year later. Even previously to this event, Captain Cook in 1770 had noticed campfire smoke in this general area, obviously belonging to aboriginal people living here. Then followed soldiers and convicts to be involved with the AA Company and again followed by timber getters harvesting cedar trees. So we can claim continuous settlement around North Arm Cove for the last 194 years. So where are we now? We have a village of some 300 houses, half of which are held by permanent residents and half by holiday ownerships many of whom come here regularly from Sydney’s northern suburbs which is an easy 2 hours car drive each way for them on

By John SAHYOUN WITH almost two million visitors each year, it is no secret that the MidCoast region is a top tourist destination. Visitor numbers have steadily increased over the past decade, and tourists are now pouring more than $570 million annually into the region’s economy. Council staff recently met with volunteers at Bulahdelah Visitors Information Centre (VIC) to acknowledge the huge role they play in promoting the region. MidCoast Manager for Growth, Economic Development and Tourism Deb Tuckerman said volunteers contribute countless hours across many areas. “Volunteers working with us in tourism bring
enthusiasm, local knowledge and pride in our region, which contributes to a terrific experience for visitors,” she said. The Bulahdelah VIC is staffed entirely by a band of volunteers who tend to more than 6,500 visitor enquiries each year from a mix of Australian and international travelers. “Volunteers have a common interest in promoting Bulahdelah and find it is very rewarding meeting all these different people,”VIC coordinator Kevin Carter said. “We are a bit lucky in Bulahdelah because we are small and have a bit more time to talk to the visitors and end up in quite interesting conversations.” Kevin said most visitors to the VIC also utilise other businesses, boosting the local economy.

We have about 300 adults who vote at each election time, some of whom are families with children, all of whom make up our community of people who just love and appreciate our waterfront location. Residents involvement has provided a Community Hall, a volunteer run library, a first class tennis court with lighting for night use ,a rural bushfire brigade with purpose built premises and good equipment, a children’s play area and of course our own beachfront location at Heros Beach. We don’t have any shops,service stations or similar commercial businesses. Our coffee shop was great whilst it lasted but small communities find it difficult to attract then maintain these facilities. We don’t have Council provided water or sewage facilities but seem to get along just fine with water tanks and pump-out or absorption “Our volunteers are doing a great job of promoting Bulahdelah and are proud to tell everyone what we have, and hopefully get them to spend some dollars in town,” he said. An average of 2.700 visitors stay in the MidCoast each night and around 9.5 percent of jobs in the region are either directly or indirectly in tourism. “Visitors provide a huge boost for local businesses and economic growth across the region and our volunteers play an important role in this,” Deb said. In addition to the regions six VIC’s, volunteers also contribute across other areas including MidCoast Assist which delivers Aging and Disability services and Council’s 11 libraries. “Delivering quality services to our community across many areas of Council is only possible through the tireless efforts of our volunteers,” Deb said.

nations expanding population will create pressures to develop the non urban lands that surround the Cove which has the potential to markedly change our present lifestyle. The lack of effective employment nearby could be one of our saving graces as also will be the cost of providing necessary services to an expanding community. However the changing population mix is most evident with city based professionals now being seen to purchase the better
waterfront properties but pleased to say that they are fitting into our lifestyles which no doubt they really appreciate. I can only see North Arm Cove as being a more sought after location as time and pressures evolve in the more heavily populated cities & suburbs of Sydney and Newcastle which proves that buying real estate and living at North Arm Cove is a safe and financially responsible place to be for generations to come .

Motorfest Keeps on Giving By Margie TIERNEY THIS year’s Motorfest could only be described as a great success, its impact on the communities of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, lasting long after the event itself. Now in its 16th year, Motorfest continues to grow and prosper with more than $9,000 raised and donated to local community groups last month. The recipients included the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club, local Rural Fire Service and the free Clinic Bus. “This money will allow the Free Clinic Bus to operate on a trial basis for three days instead of two from June,” John Hughes said. “On Tuesday and Wednesdays we go to Raymond Terrace and Newcastle and on Thursday to Raymond Terrace and Maitland.”

From small beginnings 16 years ago, Motorfest attracted nearly 400 vehicles this year and well over 2 thousand visitors to the Hawks Nest Oval. “19 Trophies for different vehicle categories were presented after a qualified team of judges looked at every car and bike,” Juergen

Dear News Of The Area WE the members of ex Great Lakes Shire have been forced into this merged Mid Coast Council. At all the meetings in our area, prior to the merge, no one supported it. But we were ignored. Our GL Council’s debt of $12 million suddenly increased by $180 million. Second broken promise of no rate increase in merged councils for 4 years. Special motion put forward by a Liberal MP from Wollongong was quickly passed. Hence we are stuck with this huge Special Rate Variation to pay back the $5 million loan from State Govt. How many years will it take us to pay that $5M back? Then how many years to pay off the balance of the backlog? We are the oldest demographic in the State. The Premier is prepared to knock down and rebuild two stadiums in Sydney at a cost of $2 billion so surely she can give us $100 million to fund the other Shires backlog of roads and bridge repairs. “On top of those things, I also had a 15 year addiction to the drug ice,” she said. But two years ago, life changed for Robyn when she discovered a program called SMART recovery, which stands for Self Management and Recovery Training. This free group program assists people with any problematic behaviours, including addiction to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, gambling, shopping, food, internet and many others. Robyn said, “I attended that program in newcastle for roughly four months, and I have now been clean and sober for 21 months.” “I have qualified as a SMART recovery facilitator and I now run a program in west Wyalong, my hometown where I have
relocated back to in the Riverina.” Robyn is now a guest speaker and travels around speaking to groups in the hopes of helping others. She will be speaking at Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens rotary meeting on 16 April at the Tea Gardens Hotel at 6pm, and also at the Raymond Terrace Narcotics Anonymous meeting and Raymond Terrace SMART program meeting for private speaking engagements. Robyn is available for other speaking events whilst staying in the area from 9-16 April, 2018. Robyn was an addict for almost four decades, and has now dedicated her life to helping others. Robyn told News Of The Area, “I first tried pot at 15, then speed at 17. “I also smoked cigarettes, I was an alcoholic, a bad gambler, I was addicted to antidepressant and I was an emotional eater gaining 31 kilos in weight over the years.”

YOUNG Keira McGregor has another Gold Medal to add to her growing collection after her recent trip to the Little Athletics State Championships in Sydney. 11 year old Keira is now the State Long Jump Champion after an amazing leap of 5.17 metres. “It was a real tale of triumph and trauma together,” Keira’s Dad, John said. “Keira was suffering with flu and competed under a real handicap.” “In the triple jump she came 4th with a personal best

Nominated Triples Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 28 MARCH The usual Wednesday Nominated Triples was played today in perfect bowling weather. It was an extraordinary day with 28 regular players and hosting 14 visitors from the New Lambton RSL BC. The 42 players enjoyed the grass green as the synthetic was reserved for a Pennant trial game between a local Grade 6 side competing against our good neighbours, Karuah RSL. What a great day for our club with a total of 66 players filling up the greens. Gee; don’t those Lambton boys like a drink? The game was followed with a sausage on a roll lunch. Winners today were picked from the winning rinks with Dale Winter selecting rink 10.
It was the lucky team of Graeme Watkins, Bill Thrift and Keith Smith collecting the money. A big thank you goes out to Dale and George Winter, Ian Baker and Brian Emmett for their help in making the day successful. Our Pennant team faired reasonably well with 2 teams winning their games but the Karuah boys took out the Master Board honours by 7 shots. Hawks & Juniors Hawks & Juniors Rugby League By Neil REYNOLDS MYALL River Junior Rugby League will go into 2018 with three teams. A new squad of Hawks will kick off at Myall Park at 9am on Saturday 7th of April, under the guidance of Melissa Petfield, with assistance from Ben Braddick. Interest in the squad has been strong. 14 players are available however a maximum of 10 can compete in any one game. The Club is looking at a second side however need as many as 6 additional players. The 10’s will play at Swansea on the same day. Their campaign will start at 10am. Together over the last 3 years, they now step up to competition. Most of the team remains the same, along with the addition of 5
new players. The 17’s squad will play Woodbury following the 6’s at Myall Park. Coach Greg Cotterill is happy with his player’s commitment after losing a number of players from last season. Myall River has been unable to field a squad between 11’s and 16’s this season. Club Secretary, Neil Reynolds commented, “although, a disappointing result, the Club can only support squads with adequate player and managerial personnel”. The Tea Gardens Hawks season kicked off in a trial game at Myall Park 3 weeks ago. The Hawks defeated Hinton Hornets by 12 points to 8 in a pre-season knock out round one. The Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League have reviewed their competition from 2017.

The 2018 season has kicked off with a 4 game compulsory pre-season trial series. The “challenge cup” series divided into 2 pools, “A” and “B” that will give the competitions committee a chance to evaluate Club strengths, before finalizing grading into 8 team competitions. With forty teams nominated, there may well be 5 grades this season. The N&HRL has also resolved that player portability from District Clubs will not be part of be competition this season. The Hawks, in pool “B” play Cardiff reserves on Sat 7th at Cardiff Oval in round 2 of the challenge cup. The game will kick off at 4:30pm. Coach Trent Murphy is confident his squad can carry on the 1st game form, noting the game time of several players. Organiser, David Gilbert said he is very pleased with the level of interest in this year’s event which already has 116 confirmed starters. “The event is a ‘four person Ambrose’ which has again been generously sponsored by Palm Lake Resort,” David said. “Once again the competition will include a battle for the ‘Greys on the Green Shield’ to be contested between Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens and Palm Lake Resort Fern Bay.” Mr Gilbert said that there will be a host of great prizes
