Skate Park to receive upgrade By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE youth of Medowie have had some welcome news, with the announcement of funding to approve their existing skate park facilities on Ferodale Road. An excited group of young people were present for the news last week that Port Stephens Council has approved the need for improvements to their beloved skate park
as one of the last financial approvals of the outgoing council. One avid skater, Benjamin Nelson, told News Of The Area, “We are stoked to see that this has been put up to improve the park.” “We can’t wait to see how it looks.” Geoff Dingle, a councillor associated with the allocation of ward funds told News Of The Area, “Plans have been drawn up by some of the local youth to include new features
including a bowl and slides to add challenge and interest.” “Expansion of the park to include the basketball ring area should happen in the next term of Council with a further injection of funds.” “The Medowie Skate Park has become a favourite spot for Medowie youth to enjoy time to test their skills on bikes, skateboards and scooters, and I’m always impressed that all age groups can share these facilities

ALEX Goodwin is about to add a half marathon to his list of life achievements, and he’s running it for an extra special reason. He’s running for his vibrant, kind, loving three-year-old son Carter, who has cerebral palsy quadriplegia hypertonic spasticity. This month, Alex will run a total of 21.1 kilometres to raise funds and awareness for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. All funds raised by this wonderful organisation go towards items that the Australian government and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) doesn’t cover. One of the most important areas that funds raised for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance are used for is research into this condition. One in 500 children in Australia (1 every 15 hours) are diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is a
physical disability that affects movement and posture. In Carter’s case, it impacts on his ability to sit, crawl, stand and walk. It also impacts

NEWCASTLE University is creating a new mentoring program for Port Stephens girls to help them achieve a university degree. Empower is being built and offered to the girls at
Tomaree High School and Irrawang High School in Port Stephens with students already tapping into the knowledge of women in business, and university workshops. The university has a mentoring program called

Tamara Young of Newcastle University told News Of The Area, “We are building a community of practice in building mentoring for Newcastle and its surrounds.” “We are working on developing ways that will create partnerships between the University and Industry to build the community of practice,” she said. “We want to help girls to develop their professional identity, build self marketing skills while developing a professional identity and employability skills.” The program will be based around online tools including videos, workshops and support from business women who have been there and done that. There was robust discussion on how girls could overcome barriers to achieving their aspirations. HIGH tea is rolling into Williamtown this October, with the annual Breast Cancer and Red Kite Fundraiser gearing up for another successful year raising funds for a very worthy cause. The charity high tea is in its sixth year, having raised over $15,000 during previous events. The 2016 event alone raised $4,000. This year’s high tea will take place on 21 October 2017. WITH just a few weeks left until entries for the Port Stephens Literature Awards close, judge Lloyd Hogg has some tips for aspiring writers. “There is no such thing as good writing – just good re writing ,” he said. “The important thing is to get your story typed up and then to work on it.” “Get rid of the unnecessary adjectives and adverbs and flowery language that doesn’t need to be there,” Lloyd told News Of The Area. “Make sure that there is a strong story line which draws the reader in. If you haven’t captured the reader’s attention within the first page or so, the judges will not treat it kindly.” “With so many entries to wade through, they are on the lookout for stories that stand out from the run-of-the-mill,” he added. There is an exhaustive judging process whereby as many as nine preliminary readers come up with the top 20 short stories. “They then award their ‘readers choice’ $50 prize to the one they consider the best and then hand the shortlisted entries over to the finalists judges.” These three judges then independently rate them
from one to 20 and add up the points to decide the winners. These are announced at the Quilt Show at Club Lemon Tree in November. Entries close on 30

elections. Incumbent West Ward councilor Peter Kafer, a

A COMMUNITY advocate and dedicated mum is leading an Independent team for this Saturday’s Central Ward council elections. Amongst her many priorities, Jenny Battrick, a resident of Medowie for 18 years, has vowed to continue the fight for those residents living in the contaminated ‘Red Zone’. Other prominent issues include better access to public transport, establishing foot and cycle paths, the upgrade of public toilet blocks, parks and sporting facilities, and increased hours at the Lemon Tree Passage waste depot. Ms Battrick has a strong involvement with local schools (including president of the Wirreanda P&C) and sports club committees, as well as supporting community groups. “For the past 17 years I have worked as a community nurse in the Port Stephens LGA and I am a proud member of the Tilligerry Football Club, past member of Medowie FC, founding member of Tilli Men’s Shed and the Community
Wellbeing Group,” she said. “Our team is advocating for a bus interchange at Medowie, bus drop off/pick up at Tanilba Public, foot and cycleways for Tilligerry, Medowie and Anna Bay/Boat Harbour and regular road maintenance.” Number two on the ticket is Tanilba Bay’s Jo Jackson, who is a director on the Tilligerry RSL board and member of the Tilli Arts,

Indigenous community, but the entire Port Stephens population. “I am passionate about bringing inclusiveness and respect to people from all walks of life,” he said. “We use a successful model at school [Hunter River High] which connects our youth with our elders and I would like to replicate that across the entire community. “I believe the council can play an important part in helping make this happen.” Fresh out of school and a proud Worimi, 19-year-old Ms Newell has lived all her life in Raymond Terrace and is currently studying criminal justice at university. “I would like to create stronger relationships between police officers and young people,” said Ms Newell, who has previously sat on Port Stephens Council’s Youth Advisory Panel. “We need to provide more events and activities for our youth through a range of means such as community, social or sporting interaction.” Mr Kafer, who if elected would become the Port’s first ever Aboriginal mayor, said it was vital we listen to our younger people. “They are our tomorrow.”

A mother and business owner who works and lives in Anna Bay, Ms Smith has shone the torch on the future of Port Stephens, as well as looking to restore confidence in Port Stephens Council. “I want to make Port Stephens an even better place to live, work and raise our children,” she said. “As well as living and working in the Bay, I am an active member of Birubi Point Surf Lifesaving and Tomaree Triathlon clubs. “If I am elected to council I will listen to the community and act to ensure they are heard.” Ms Smith said that topics of concern included improving town centres, paths, public amenities and signage, in addition to ensuring that residential developments were appropriate to local areas and transport links. Sailing Stalwarts Nurture Next Generation

TANILBA Sailing Club has emerged from its winter recess to begin its 2017- 2018 season. Although small in number, the club boasts some eight former or current national and state champions in catamaran classes.
On top of this, they are nurturing a second generation of young sailors. “We secured a State Government grant to buy several ‘Bic’ trainers and we’re looking for young people to learn the art,” he said. “Those interested can contact me on 0419 912 420,”

CENTRAL Ward Port Stephens will be buzzing this election day when the community unites in a spring celebration at the Medowie Community Spring Fair on Saturday 9 September from 9:30am. ST CHRISTOPHER’S Catholic Church is busily planning a very special 60th Anniversary of the Catholic Church in Medowie, and are looking forward to sharing its special history with our community. The year was 1957, and the Catholic parishioners in Medowie were looking forward to finally having a Catholic Church in Medowie. Prior to this, Mass was celebrated weekly at the old corrugated and fibro sheet Medowie Hall, which stood where the current community hall stands today. Before the hall, Mass was celebrated at the home of the Campbell family in
Ferodale, an area which is now submerged under Grahamstown Dam. In preparation for the construction of the new church, the Parish of Raymond Terrace purchased a block of land on Medowie Road next to where the Rural Fire Station stands today. This was later swapped for the block on which the church now stands, across the road. The small community then got to work to raise money to help fund the construction of their church. The history of the building of this church involved many long-term Medowie families who still worship at the church today. Many of these families will
play a part in the celebrations planned for 10 September 2017. The Medowie Pastoral team has prepared a special day to mark the occasion. A Mass will be held on the morning at 11:30am, followed by lunch and the opportunity to share stories and memories from years gone by. THE Community PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) program is an awards system presented weekly through a number of schools in Port Stephens. Because of the popularity of the Community PBL Awards for students, a PBL award for adults working within local schools has been implemented. One adult within the community each award cycle who demonstrates our personal behaviour for Learning (PBL) values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best will be recognised and rewarded. Libby Dingle being presented her award by Deputy Principal David Pearson. Libby was nominated for her many years of commitment as coordinator of the Plan it Youth Career Mentoring Program at Irrawang High School, and for always instilling in the students the core values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. Libby has been a Plan it Youth volunteer for 12 years, becoming the coordinator during that time. The Plan it Youth matches volunteers from the community, from all walks of life, who are trained through the program to mentor high school students. Libby, along with her husband, has enjoyed volunteering in her community in various ways since her retirement from her career as a maths teacher and home school
liaison officer. She is also the team leader for Plan it Youth at Hunter River High. One of the mentors under Libby’s direction, Jan Noake, told News Of The Area, “The students and mentors were so pleased to hear Libby was awarded the first adult PBL award.” “Libby is such a perfect leader of the Plan it Youth program because she genuinely cares for the
students and mentors.” “The Plan it Youth program does wonderful things for both students and their mentors, and it’s success is largely attributed to Libby’s efforts to see it succeed,” she said. By Charlie ELIAS A BUDDING Nelson Bay golfer has won selection in the prestigious Hunter District PSSA Golf team. Amy Squires, aged 10 and a member of the promising junior Nelson Bay Golf Club team, recently took part in the PSSA Hunter selection trials at Newcastle Golf Club where she outshone many of her competitors. As a result Squires was
successful in making the district championships and, in fact, she was the only girl selected in the team of eight golfers. She will be playing at Camden Lakeside Golf Club on 6 and 7 September in the PSSA NSW titles where she will attempt to win selection in the prestigious State team. Last week she was presented with a cheque from Nelson Bay Golf Club president Max Pride to help with her costs for the
championships. “Amy has been practicing very hard at the Nelson Bay course this year and has improved her game considerably, even winning some of the Sunday comps along the way,” Mr Pride said. “She wants to thank the Nelson Bay lady members who have been very helpful and extremely encouraging. We wish Amy all the best in this upcoming event.”
Residents with properties in bushfire zones that have council land adjacent to their properties which are dedicated asset protection zones are being asked to take action. Ian Crawford of Port Stephens Council is adamant that residents adjacent to council land have a responsibility to ensure that they are kept clear and are not being used for storage, or as a dumping ground. Council does have the power to take action against residents that fail to keep buffer zones clear. Chris Holderberg, the Station Manager of Salamander Bay Fire Station, told News Of The Area, “It’s
important to prepare your home; clear trees and shrubs from around your home especially if you live close to bushland.” “Remove debris from gutters and around houses, material on roofs and gutters tend to ignite from sparks,” he said. “Sit down now and talk with your family, make a plan to stay and defend or to leave early and make sure the plan includes your pets.” “Consider if you have a means to extinguish flare ups, remember that the fire service may not get there to stop a fire so if you stay you need to be prepared,” he said.

Medowie Neighbourhood Watch meet up to discuss the police report from January to August

MEDOWIE Neighbourhood Watch met for their first official meeting this week after last month’s launch. First on the agenda was a presentation by our NSW Police Representative, Port Stephens LAC Crime Prevention Officer, Alison Stewart. Statistics were presented to the group for crimes reported for the January to August period in Medowie. In total, there were 14 break and enters into dwellings, and four into non-dwellings. There were 47 incidences of malicious damage recorded, and 45 malicious damage to property. There were two reports of graffiti, 12 stealing from motor vehicles, and 13 stolen vehicles. Though these numbers
in some cases may seem high, they are comparatively low to other residential areas within Port Stephens. The group brainstormed ideas that may suit the community to address in future meetings, with home security, animal ownership, correct reporting protocols, school zones and misuse of motor vehicles being high on the list. Alison Stewart from Port Stephens Local Area Command (LAC) told News Of The Area, “It is pleasing to see that the community of Medowie have pulled together to form such a group.” “They have the interests of their community members at the forefront and are working together to provide a sense of safety within the community.” Geoff Dingle from Medowie Progress Association told News Of The Area, “There were lots of good ideas from those present about what they would like to see discussed at
future meetings.” “These included guest speakers on topics such as home security, pet management, parties, ‘hoon’ behaviour, school zones and speed management in local streets.” “Many thanks to Alison Stewart who attended and provided crime statistics on Medowie for the past eight months, which she will continue to provide in detail at all future meetings,” he said. Thank you to all who attended and showed interest in what is happening in our community, and more importantly what they can do to help. Medowie Neighbourhood Watch meetings will be held on the last Wednesday of every month at 7:30pm at the Medowie Community Hall.

Health Centre Opens

AFTER nearly 18 months of working in a cramped demountable building, and four months prior to that of home visits, Central Health Alliance finally has a permanent place to call home. With such a big operation to complete to move everyone in seamlessly and without disruption to patients, the Central Health Alliance team had a well thought out plan. During the last week of August, the team began moving the Allied Health facilities into the new Port Stephens Integral Health building. From there, they slowly started moving non-essential items to the medical building, leaving just the items needed to operate, before the big move last Saturday could take place. Practice Manager Rachel Peake told News Of The Area, “We had members of the community help in so many
ways, it was wonderful to see.” “We had people helping dismantle the wheelchair ramp, people brought trailers and trucks, and plenty of hands and man power to do the heavy lifting.” “We even had patients dropping food and nibbles for us all and the people who helped out,” she said. With all the help from the community, the team were able to make the move in just a few hours. They then had the task of setting the entire surgery up in time to reopen in the new premises, ready for operation on Monday morning. Rachel said, “We had more amazing people helping on the Sunday getting everything organised and all the fixtures up on the walls.” “It was such a massive ordeal and we could not have done it without the amazing friends and patients that helped make it happen.” The surgery is still a work
in progress, but the team are glad they are able to still offer all the services they had in the previous building such as Physio, Psychology, Speech Therapy, Dietician, and Occupational Therapy. They are also still in talks to acquire even more services and specialists. There will soon also be a café open in the centre, as well as talks with Imaging companies Lakes Mobile Ultrasound and Compass Mobile Xray. Dr Paul Burford told News Of The Area, “I am really looking forward to what the future holds for Central Health Alliance.” “It has been a lot of hard work, but the community response has affirmed that we are headed in the right direction.” “All along our goal has been to bring quality healthcare to our community,” he said.

examiner assessed the girls on their technique, timing and talent. “When professional outside examiners conduct the exams, it truly is a true, unbiased assessment of how the girls are doing,” Ms Darcy added. The tap exam is made up of barre work, centre work, oral theory, and a dance solo. The examiner was Mrs Julie England. The studio is now working towards their ATOD ballet, jazz and national character exams to be held at the end of August.

Greek plaque service at Nelson Bay

A PLAQUE gifted to the RSL by the Greek Consul commemorating the service and sacrifice of the ANZACs was unveiled in Nelson Bay on Wednesday, 6 September. The ceremony included a dedication service at 11am at the Memorial in Apex Park. Nelson Bay RSL Sub Branch secretary Russell Durrant said that the Greek Consul Zisis Antoniadis was
in attendance. He said that the dedication was conducted by the Greek Orthodox Priest Father Nicolas Cordilas, from the Holy Apostles Church in Newcastle and Rev Kesh Govan from All Saints Anglican in Nelson Bay. “We also invited 100-year-old WWII veteran Alf Carpenter who served in Crete in 1941 and he has indicated he will be attending,” Mr Durrant said. “In 2016 the Greek Consul General, on behalf
of the Greek Government, presented Nelson Bay SubBranch along with other Sub Branches with the marble plaque. “The plaque commemorates the service and sacrifice of Australians during both the First and Second World Wars in the defence of Greece.” Mr Durrant said that attendees are invited to return to the Nelson Bay Diggers for light refreshments after the service.

SPRING turned on a beauty for Port Stephens Power at the AFL Hunter Juniors Grand Final at Tulkaba Park, Teralba on Sunday. The boys from U/11’s Black are the first stand alone team for Port Power to play in the Grand Final in over a decade. They charged through their banner and onto the oval to take on an undefeated Warners Bay side. The boys fought hard the whole game with hunger for the win, but unfortunately Warners Bay were too strong and took the win. The final score saw Warners Bay defeat Port Stephens Power with a final score of 11.9.75 to 3.0.18 Port Stephens Power President Mel Nelson told News Of The Area, “I could not be prouder of our boys, the buzz and excitement flowing through the club the last few weeks is because of the fantastic footy these boys have played this season.”
