Sea Shelter Clean Up By Marian SAMPSON
WHILE the focus of pollution in the Port’s waterways has been on the container spill there is an ongoing need to clean up general and dumped rubbish on the shores and in the mangroves at Bobs Farm. Port Stephens conservation organisation Sea Shelter working closely with Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters spent World Oceans Day cleaning up the mangroves at Bobs Farm. The picturesque Marsh Road at Bobs Farm is lined with mangrove habitat that has sustained a fair amount of illegal dumping and littering over the years. 61 helpers turned up to improve the condition of a 3.5km stretch of mangroves. Together they removed nearly three tonnes of rubbish which organisers believe barely scratched the surface of what can be achieved in the area.

Waterpark Woes By Marian SAMPSON
THE proposed waterpark at Bob’s Farm has been hailed as a great opportunity for Port Stephens tourism, however local residents hold grave concerns on flood water management and the subsequent impact on locals health and wellbeing. Currently the drains and flood gates in surrounding properties have been being maintained by a local property owner however, with a recent land sale the community can no longer depend on this Good Samaritan. Port Stephens residents may not be aware that Bobs Farm properties near Marsh Road flood when the drains are not maintained,
but those impacted know only too well how delicate the balance is on their properties. The sale of one property in the vicinity of the proposed waterpark will soon see a market garden business in operation this along with 135 head of cattle in the area is likely to change water dispersal as well. The communities concerns surround the information within the planning proposal including what they believe is apparent errors in the information in relation to drains and rainfall predictions. Former Mayor of Port Stephens and Bobs Farm resident Ron Swan OAM
told News Of The Area, “With the proposal for the waterpark including cabins, the infrastructure will not allow for adequate drainage in an already flood prone area.” He believes that more investigation is needed into the potential impact for the wellbeing of students attending Bobs Farm Public School as well. “I have been approached by several of my neighbours who have expressed concern that there may be a political will to endorse a tourism business over the concerns of local residents and indeed council staff with regard to future ongoing negative impacts, on drainage and living conditions and on council

All Port Stephens Sister Cities, Yugawara, Tateyama and Kushiro in Japan and Bellingham will participate in the exchanges. 16 dancers from Bellingham, Port Stephens’ sister city in Washington State will perform at schools in Raymond Terrace, Salamander, Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay in July. Families connected with the Robyn Yvette Dance Company will provide home hosting for the visitors. Continuing in sharing our region and sport the Sister Cities program will see seven marathon runners from Bellingham and Tateyama will compete in the Hunter Valley Winery Running Festival, with members of the Nelson Bay Hash House Harriers arranging to home host the runners and assist with transport. In August, six young students from Yugawara will attend classes at St Philips Christian College and be
home hosted by St Philips families. Three runners from Port Stephens are invited to take part in the annual Bellingham Bay Marathon on 30 September in scenic northwest Washington. The final celebration of the 30th Anniversary will see 17 members of the Port Stephens SeaSide Singers travelling to Japan for 17 days, performing at each of the three sister cities and at iconic local venues including art galleries and museums, as well as joining in workshops with Japanese choral groups. Nigel Dique Chairman for Port Stephens Sister Cities told News Of The Area, “Being a part of an exchange gives a unique insight into cultures which you can’t achieve travelling and staying in hotels, you form friendships for life, it can be a wonderfully enriching experience.” Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee, formed in 1988, its genesis was in discussions leading up to the construction in 1983 of the Tomago aluminium smelter, which was designed along the lines of one in Bellingham.

Terrace Progress is Wanted COMMUNITY members and business representatives from Raymond Terrace, Heatherbrae and Medowie are being called on to play an active role in driving progress in their local communities. Port Stephens Council is calling for nominations from people who want to keep Council accountable and drive action by sitting on implementation panels for the Raymond Terrace and Heatherbrae Strategy, as well as the Medowie Strategy. Two community members and two business representatives will be selected for each panel. The panels will meet quarterly and will be responsible for ensuring Council is on track to deliver key actions from each strategy. Steve Peart, Council’s Strategy and Environment
Section Manager, says Council is looking for people with an interest in driving progress in their community. “Raymond Terrace and Heatherbrae has long been identified as a centre of strategic importance for the Hunter region,” Mr Peart said. “Council adopted the Raymond Terrace and Heatherbrae Strategy in 2015 and while some actions have been implemented we’re now looking to establish a panel to ensure the community has oversight of what we’re trying to achieve,” he said. “This includes a walking path along the Hunter river, encouraging shop-top housing within the town centre and identifying land for open space within the town centre.” “Equally, Medowie is an important town centre that Council is keen to see flourish.

Kaylee the Brave
Kaylee is one of a very special bunch of children known as Heart Kids, having been diagnosed with Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD) at just six weeks old. By Rachael VAUGHAN KAYLEE Stokes is Medowie’s own little superhero, and because of her you may have just seen some extra superheroes around Medowie last week. Kaylee is one of a very special bunch of children known as Heart Kids, having been diagnosed with Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD) at just six weeks old. The organisation ‘HeartKids’ is the only national profit for purpose charity dedicated to supporting children, teens and adults affected by congenital/childhood heart disease all across Australia.
They also fund lifesaving research, provide information and advocate for the needs of HeartKids families’. In Australia, every day eight babies on average are born with heart disease in Australia Tragically, in babies under the age of one, heart disease is the leading cause of death. Last week, in honour of their little buddy Kaylee, some other groups of special children got involved to help raise funds and awareness for children with heart disease. Kaylee attends Medowie Community Preschool and Kelly’s Cottage family daycare, and both centres put their hand up to get involved
in this years ‘HeartKids Super Boss day. At both centres, students and staff alike dressed as their favourite superhero, donating money to be involved. For Kelly’s Cottage manager Kelly Berger, this also meant being a great sport and arriving at Wirreanda Public School drop off dressed in her costume to deliver her older students to class. Money raised from this nationally supported fundraiser makes a real difference in providing support, encouragement and hope to children affected by heart disease. One program HeartKids

THE Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club offers Bay ladies a chance to share their life stories learn and get out and about together as a part of the community. One person that has been giving to the Club for many years is Welfare Officer Patricia (Pat) Phelps. In her role she visits members who are not well or who can’t get out and about to attend regular meetings. Pat drops in for a
cuppa and a chat, and stays in touch with members when they need it most, simply put Pat is there to care. Jill Stephenson Secretary of the Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club told News Of The Area, “There’s so much I could tell you about Patricia.” “Pat is an avid communicator. “Pat first became a pen pal over 60 years ago through a Reader’s Digest offer, and she is still writing and enjoying the letters that she and her pen pal share.
“Pat’s story of how she and her pen pal first met and how they are still corresponding has recently been published in Reader’s Digest,” she said. MEDOWIE Neighbourhood Watch are kicking goals for our town, with safety on their mind. Thanks to their hard work fundraising, and a generous piece of funding, they are about to make some extra purchases to benefit our community. The funding recently allocated to Medowie Neighbourhood Watch came from Deputy Mayor and Councillor Chris Doohan on behalf of himself and other Central Ward Councillors, and Port Stephens Council. Medowie Neighbourhood Watch will use this funding, and funds raised from raffles at local markets to fund some much needed items. The group will purchase their first portable CCTV cameras to kick off the Medowie Neighbourhood Watch CCTV Camera Loan program, allowing Medowie residents to loan a camera free of charge. Any resident who wishes to obtain footage of anything happening on their property will be able to loan a camera, and collect footage to provide to police. The cameras can be either mains powered, or by battery, and can either be set up covertly anywhere on the exterior of the home, or used inside the home. They have a motion sensor, and can record clearly during either the day or night in high definition colour. They are housed in a discreet, compact and undetectable unit. Geoff Dingle, from Medowie Neighbourhood Watch, told News Of The Area, “We are looking forward to getting this loan program off the ground,

The magnets printed so far have proved popular, which list all relevant safety, emergency and welfare numbers for Medowie in one handy spot. Statistics for this month were again reported and discussed at the most recent meeting. The reports were much lower than previous months, indicating perhaps that all incidents mentioned
on social media are not necessarily reported through the appropriate channels. These statistics of course do not give an accurate view of crime in our community if the residents are not actively and consistently reporting all instances of crime related offences, so residents are reminded that nothing is too small to report, and even seemingly insignificant pieces of information can help with the ‘bigger picture’, Neighbourhood Watch Medowie meetings are held the last Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm in the Medowie Community Centre, first meeting room on the left as you enter the building. A WATERSHED BUDGET “FOR THE PEOPLE” The NSW Government’s 2018-19 has been hailed as a “budget for the people”. With a $3.9 billion surplus, confirmed our State is Number 1 in Australia in terms of economic growth and employment. I have taken on the plastic free challenge in the lead up to Plastic Free July, but when I go to the supermarket everything is wrapped in plastic packaging. Also, I keep forgetting to take my reusable bags with me and I’m spending a small fortune on new ones each time.

Dear News Of The Area, I NOTE Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan’s article in the June 21 issue of News Of The Area under the heading ‘More Development’. Cr Doohan waxes lyrical about the proposed Lifestyle Estate development on Medowie Road. However, I would suggest it is not the councillor’s role to act as promoter for a private development and in spruiking the upside he overlooks his role to ensure Medowie residents get quality developments, not just some jobs, retail sales and rates income for council. He also appears to overlook a number of pertinent facts which I believe include: The 238 dwellings are classed as ‘moveable’ homes although it is doubtful any of them will ever move anywhere. Obviously not masonry dwellings. My understanding is that each home will sit cheek by jowl on block sizes of around 300sq metres of land. Very much like the high density 300sq. metre developments proposed by Town Planning some years ago and which were roundly rejected by the Medowie community. The 238 dwellings are crammed into what appears to be about half of the overall site. This suggests that if this development is approved as it stands it will set a precedent and could be just stage one of more development on the site creating a veritable overcrowded community. The 1.5 persons per ‘moveable’ home quoted is

SPORT By Marian SAMPSON A WEEK of great breaks has seen some of great efforts in the 2018 ECS Boards SUP State Titles which saw seven new NSW champions crowned at the Port Stephens Surf Festival. The Port Stephens Surf Festival comprises of the 2018 ECS Boards SUP State Titles and the 2018 Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard Titles presented by HIF and decided the NSW Teams for the upcoming Australian SUP Titles in Currumbin and the Australian Longboard Titles at Tweed Heads. Despite some horrific weather on the NSW coastline, longboard competitors were
breakfast club on a regular basis for many years. Lachlan Johnson, from Karuah Public School, for following instructions and using excellent manners in the local IGA. Stella Sandeman, from Grahamstown Public School, for looking after the younger students at Star Struck. Laura Moir, from Seaham Public School, who found a considerable amount of money in the playground. She ensured it was reported to the school, and returned to the student who lost it. Joanna Downey, from Hunter River High School, who is nominated for her caring and respectful manner. She was a wonderful role model for younger students during an Aboriginal dance performance. After the performance, Joanna took time to thank the performer and helped out by carrying equipment back to the performers car. Congratulations to this week’s winner, it is wonderful to see so many young people every week conducting themselves in the PBL way.
Stretton Takes Out Junior Title greeted with punchy twofoot peaks for the Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard Titles at One Mile Beach at the Port Stephens Surf Festival. The five day event saw Anna Bay’s Josh Stretton aged 16 crowned winner of the NSW Junior Men’s NSW SUP. Stretton posted two mammoth heat totals in the 17.00 point range to gain the upper hand against the opposition and claim the division convincingly. Stretton also took out second place in the 10 foot men’s surfing division and shows promise for the future. The event was held at One Mile Beach where the waves gave competitors an excellent opportunity to show their
skills. Josh Stretton told News Of The Area, “I’m really proud to be representing NSW at the Australian Titles, especially with only one junior from each state.” “I’ve been surfing for 13 years, I can’t really remember not surfing,” he said. As a result of the win Josh Stretton will be representing NSW, competing in the Australian SUP Titles in November at Currumbin on the Gold Coast. Mayor Ryan palmer told News Of The Area, “It is a great result for Josh Stretton our local winner to be competing and winning at the highest level right here in his own backyard.

ACTING on a Notice of Motion from Cr Jamie Abbott, Port Stephens Council this week called on the NSW Government to provide funding and support for the construction of two major roads in Port Stephens.Cr Abbott called for the promised duplication of Nelson Bay Road and further requested that Fingal Bay Link Road be re-classified as a State Road and funded and constructed by NSW Roads and Maritime Services. Speaking during the meeting, Cr Abbott said Premier Berejiklian needed to fulfil the government’s promise to the people of Port Stephens to solve significant traffic issues in the area. “Over the long weekend, with a moderate increase in traffic, we saw our two biggest road issues come to the fore yet again,” she said. “Nelson Bay Road has been promised previously and I’m calling on the Premier and her government to deliver on a promise. It’s as simple as that.” Cr Abbott also called for government support to make the Fingal Bay Link Road a reality. “This vital Link road is simply too much for us, as a Council, to undertake as a Council road. So I’m calling on Roads Minister Pavey to reclassify it as a State Road and work with Council and the community to deliver this key project.” In fully supporting the motion, Mayor Ryan Palmer said delivery of the two major road projects would make a huge difference to people on the Tomaree Peninsula.

Mr Johan Kruger, coach of the Mini Marauders, Medowie’s Junior Rugby Union Club told News Of The Area, “I watched our Mini Marauders take the field with the Wallabies and felt an enormous sense of pride.” “One of my favourite moments of the night was when one of the young boys from our Club, Robert Cook came up to me and in the most excited state said to me, Johan, next year I am going to be on the field again, but this time I am going to be a Wallaby player.” Mr Kruger thanked assistant coaches, Mr Shannon Wither and Mr Adam Wade for their support in getting the event organised. “Taking 23 little kids halfway around the stadium through the massive crowd

Landsdowne Cup series was not without drama. A perceived controversial end of game decision, meant the Irish team were victors
in an entertaining and hard played game. The final score was a close, and heartbreaking for the Australians, 20-16 in favour of
the team in green. Drama aside, two junior Rugby Union teams from Port Stephens were selected to participate in the third game.
They ran on field with players from the Australian and Ireland Rugby Union teams and stood proudly with them while the
