DEMONSTRATING continued expertise in sewing quilts, Medowie sibling duo Scarlett (8 years) and Caesar Lewis (6 years) have this year impressed the crowds at the Sydney Quilt Show. Hosted by the Quilters Guild of NSW, this is one of the most prestigious annual shows Australian quilters enter to demonstrate their skills in design, sewing, and creativity. With his quilt ‘The Caterpillar Race’, Caesar, who was five at the time of piecing together and sewing the quilt, said of entering the Show, “It’s so cool.” For his efforts, he was awarded second prize in the Junior Member (Up to Year 6) category. Asked how he felt about winning, Caesar, a humble boy said, “The judges called out my name.” “I was happy and I liked

WITH the Centenary of Anzac commemorations having hit the halfway mark, there still remains interest in learning more about Australia’s involvement in World War I. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Mr Scot MacDonald MLA and Minister for Veterans Affairs, Mr David Elliott have issued a call out for all school students in years 10 and 11 to enter a ballot to take part in a 13-day tour of the Remembrance Trail, tracing Australia’s involvement on the Western Front. In an issued statement, Mr MacDonald said, “It is an incredible chance for students to visit key Australian memorial sites, and to witness firsthand the fields upon which our young men and women fought and forged the Anzac spirit.” “The tour will bring to life the stories of the First World War and the Western Front that we read about in history books and hear of at Anzac Day ceremonies.” Australia’s historical links to France and Belgium remain of key interest to many in the community. Two weeks ago,

Among the guests were Mr John Ridgeway who gave a stirring welcome to country in Worimi language, Ms Meryl Swanson MP, Air Vice Marshal (retired) Bob Treloar AO, and President of the Raymond
Terrace Historical Society Mr Ken Barlow. This was no ordinary homecoming. Private Herbert Hamilton enlisted to fight in World War I and was killed in action. Being an orphan and with no surviving family, Private Hamilton’s medals have never been claimed by a bonafide next of kin.
MEDOWIE has lost one of its own on the roads again this week, with a car accident claiming the life of a female Medowie resident on Monday. The accident happened at the intersection of Industrial Drive and Tourle Street in Mayfield around 11:30am. Crash scene
investigations at the time of print suggest the White Holden Astra was turning right onto Tourle Street, when it was struck by a Ford Territory. A woman, a passenger in the White Holden Astra, passed away at the scene, while her 66-year old husband was taken to John Hunter Hospital. A 31-year old male was
also taken to Hospital with injuries. The highway was closed in all directions for most of the day, and into the early evening for some access points. The News Of The Area team send the families of all involved our deepest sympathies as they deal with this tragedy.

Historians and authors Mr John Gillam and Mrs Yvonne Fletcher, from Medowie, in a project they started in 2012 named ‘The Missing Medals’, can now claim their first success in a soldier’s next
of kin receiving the original medals he was entitled to. Kept in a vault, it is estimated there are over 2.5 tonnes of medals still waiting for collection. The historians were able to prove that the Raymond Terrace and District Historical
Society could prove next-ofkin status. School principals should lodge an expression of interest by 5pm on 17 August 2017 at www.veterans.nsw. gov.au. The successful schools will be announced after 20 August 2017.

THE Australian Government has worked together with ‘On the Line’, to provide residents and workers within the Williamtown contamination ‘Red Zone’ a free 24 hour telephone and video counselling service. ‘Support Now’ is staffed by qualified counsellors seven days a week and is available for immediate, confidential and anonymous support. Counsellors can work with individuals within the Red Zone for up to three sessions and can provide referrals to other services, while helping people work
through their concerns and stresses. Salt Ash resident, Carrie Clarke told News Of The Area, “The service is a positive for the community as it means people don’t have to book an appointment and wait to talk to someone if they need support.” ‘Support Now’ was set up in February 2017 and will be available for residents until September 2019. The service is delivered by ‘On the Line’, an organisation with 55 years’ experience in providing mental health support. Kim O’Neill, Chief Executive Officer at ‘On the Line’ told News Of The Area,

The vessel was transported as deck cargo to Australia in 1999 and renamed ‘Danial Thane’ after the grandson of the benefactor who donated it to the Port Stephens Coast Guard (now Marine Rescue). It joins a long list of famous boats and mariners to berth at the marina in Lemon Tree Passage. Most notable was David Lewis whose epic attempt to circumnavigate Antarctica in his steel yacht ‘Icebird ‘ rates as one of the greatest sea voyages of all time. On top of this, the ‘Winston Churchill’ was slipped here. It foundered during the ill fated Sydney/ Hobart race of 1998 with the loss of three lives. The ‘Bintang Siang,’ a 1942 WWII Brisbane built Macassan Prau left the marina only to end its days on a beach on the far north coast. It had been used by Australia’s ‘Z’ force on secret missions to infiltrate Japanese held waters. The now decommissioned ‘Danial Thane’ has been slipped at the Albatross Marina for some water blasting and a pre-sales inspection.

Future forensics experts in the making By Rachael VAUGHAN STUDENTS were given a taste test of an industry this week that they may not have encountered previously, hopefully sparking some interest and steering some students to a potential career interest area down the track. Students from Years 7-12 at Irrawang High School were invited to attend a fascinating workshop this week on Forensic Science. A presenter in the field visited the school, bringing with them a real-to-life crime scene investigation
scenario, and set up a series of forensic evidence experiments for the students to work through together. Students learned about the set up case scenario, and all contributing factors leading to the crime being committed. School representative Lue Fagan told News Of The Area, “It was fascinating watching the students work through step by step what had happened.” “The case highlighted how the lure of drugs and easy money can lead to a web of deceit and betrayal, and the students were thoroughly engaged as they investigated.” “A young man is accused

THE News Of The Area team is thrilled to welcome their newest addition, Glenda Farrar. With extensive sales experience and knowledge, Glenda has been appointed as Business Development Manager of the ‘hyper-local’ community paper. Thirty years in business sales, marketing and advertising means that Ms Farrar is well equipped to look after the paper’s current and future customers. Glenda said, “I am passionately throwing myself into the task of making this very local paper successful and interesting for the residents of the area and of real value to the local business community in terms of reaching their local customers.” Glenda moved to Port Stephens about three years ago after living for many years in Far North Queensland. She has been working in the area for a well known Port Stephens [Fairfax] paper for that period of time. News Of The Area Director Michael Wright said

A CARING group of fitness mad friends have put their alcohol to the side for the month of July, to participate in the ‘Dry July’ fundraiser. The fundraiser provides much needed funds that go towards cancer support organisations across Australia, to help improve patient comfort, care and wellbeing. Dry July raises money to ease the burden, reduce stress and add a bit of comfort for those affected by cancer. Medowie locals, and Project Health and Fitness members, Jacki Ashpole, Sally Black, Kym Brennan, Lee Brooks and Shay Warby formed a team and set about planning some fantastic ways
to reach their goal total. Jackie Ashpole told News Of The Area, “Each of our team members all know someone with cancer, or have lost someone to this terrible disease.” “We thought it was such a simple commitment to help raise funds to help people get through the worst time of their lives.” “We’re hoping to smash our goal and raise as much as possible,” she said. The team originally set their goal to raise $500, but at the time of print have already surpassed that goal and reached $650. With a public fundraising event open to the community still to come, the team has now set their goal a little higher, and hope to reach $1000 before the month

Active Kids Voucher Program By Rachael VAUGHAN THERE has been a lot of talk around town lately about the new $100 Active Kids rebate voucher, which was announced in the recent State Budget. Being such a sports oriented community, Medowie parents are encouraged to learn about this incentive, and consider applying for it by enrolling your child in a sporting program for next year. A NSW Government report suggests that the majority of children and adolescents in NSW are not meeting the daily recommended levels of physical activity.
The Active Kids rebate will be available from the NSW Government via a voucher system to all school-aged children from January 2018, who enrol in or register for sport and fitness activities to cover participation costs. It will not be means tested, and will be run annually for the next four years. There will be no limits on the number of applications per family, as long as every child is enrolled in school. The initiative will reduce the barriers to participation and help change the physical activity behaviours of children and young people
in NSW. The voucher can be used for registration or membership fees for afterschool, weekend sport and structured physical activity programs, including swimming lessons, from a wide range of providers. The vouchers will be redeemable through approved sport, fitness and physical activity providers upon registration. Applications will be facilitated by the Office of Sport. “I had four training sessions with the horse prior to competing and based on a video of each of those sessions I received coaching advice from a coach in Germany and another in Australia,” she said. The first competition was the Individual Qualifier One, where Dr Hudson finished in fifth place. The second competition was the Individual Qualifier two, where she jumped up one place and came in fourth. That one place improvement qualified Dr Hudson for the final, where she finished fifth overall. Interestingly, Dr Hudson
was the only rider in the final to make it that far on a borrowed horse; all competitors that finished ahead of her had brought their own horse to the Games. There was also a team event that Dr Hudson was ineligible for because there were no other Australian riders. Dr Hudson said, “I am absolutely delighted with this result and what I achieved in a very short space of time.” “It’s an outstanding opportunity to test my riding skills, and also to share the experience with new and old friends from all over the world.”

MEDOWIE Veterinarian Dr Ilona Hudson has just returned from a successful trip to the Maccabiah Games in Israel. Dr Hudson was the only equestrian athlete to represent Australia in the competitive dressage event. The Maccabiah Games, often referred to as the Jewish Olympics, draws together 9,000 athletes from 78 countries. The first was held in 1932, and the games take place quadrennially in Israel. These games were a particularly special event for Australian Athletes, as they participated in a ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Maccabiah games where the bridge leading athletes on their march into the opening ceremony collapsed, killing four Australian athletes and injuring sixty others. Competitors from around the world cannot always bring their horses with them to compete in the games, so a pool of horses are made available to those competitors, who can then CONTINUED Page 8
