Medowie mum shares to help others By Heather SHARP
PERINATAL and Depression Week (PND) held annually from 15-21 November aims to raise awareness for this condition experienced by many mothers. The term encompasses the variety of mental health issues that can affect women while pregnant and up to a year post-birth. Community initiatives aim to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues, especially heightened when women have children in what is commonly seen as a joyful occasion. Local woman Mrs Stevie Wilkinson (26), mum to a son, George, now aged 11 months,
bravely agreed to speak of her personal experiences with perinatal depression. She is telling her story in order to support other women who may be experiencing similar issues and to destigmatise the issues surrounding seeking support for mental health issues. Mrs Wilkinson told Medowie News Of The Area that she realised she was experiencing PND when she had thoughts of harming her son when she could not soothe him. Although hesitant at first, concerned about repercussions if she admitted her feelings to a medical professional, Mrs Wilkinson

Gloves still on Deputy Mayor still fighting for Port Stephens against amalgamation WHEN the announcement was made in December 2015 that Port Stephens Council would amalgamate with Newcastle

Council, the reaction from Port Stephens residents was not favourable. Port Stephens Councillors
got together and formed a plan to put up a solid fight on behalf of the residents. Port Stephens Council
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chris Doohan, told News Of The Area, “We put on gloves and became determined
to challenge the ridiculous proposal, and have remained stoic in our fight for the people of Port Stephens.” The council invested a lot of time and funds to put
together a submission to the Government Appointed Delegate (GAD), to prevent the merger with Newcastle. The delegate did his report, and it was given to local government to digest. Chris Doohan comically told News Of The Area, “The rubbish in this report was CONTINUED Page 2

across Australia are called to wear a white ribbon or wristband as a visual symbol of their commitment and oath. In swearing the oath
NOVEMBER 25 is White Ribbon Day, and there will be a number of events that Port Stephens residents can participate in to support the cause. The White Ribbon Campaign is the only national violence prevention campaign, and it is unique in that it aims to raise awareness among Australian men and boys about the roles they can play to prevent violence against women. The campaign calls for men across Australia to speak out and take an oath swearing never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. The campaign culminates on White Ribbon Day (25 November) each year, when men and women

for a Cause Fundraiser for Coffee For the love of the community Heart Surgery By Simone JOHNSON
BORN only four months ago with seven holes in his heart, baby Luke has already gone through open heart surgery, followed by a cardiac arrest, and another heart operation followed by pneumonia. After such a devastating start to life, the community is being encouraged to get involved with a fundraiser to assist with Luke’s ongoing medical treatment. Tilligerry RSL is holding a trivia night to raise money for his family. Normally residents of Lemon Tree Passage, the family has been living in Ronald McDonald House in Sydney since he was born and they have rarely been home since. After being awarded a bead to symbolise every surgery he has undergone in hospital, Luke now has 3.5 metres worth. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday 26 December, beginning at 6pm. Tickets are $10 per person, with tables of eight. Prizes have been donated
by local businesses such as Sand Duning Adventures and Moon Shadow Cruises. Spirits, wine and seafood have also been donated as part of the prize pool and raffle. Family friend and event organiser Paul Green told News Of The Area, “We would like to thank all local businesses for everything they have supplied or donated, as well as the community members for getting involved.” “At the moment, I’m not sure if the family will even be able to make it on the night as they only come home for a few hours at a time,” he said. Paul has also set up a ‘GoFundMe’ page, which has raised approximately $1500 so far. Donations can be made at http://www.gofundme/nmlukey “Let’s all pull together to help a local family in need who are currently struggling,” Paul said. THE Gurr Family have resided in Medowie for ten years, and have proven above and beyond how much they love our community, by giving back through their small business at every turn possible. Rod and Kylie Gurr are the owners of Hennessy Coffee, and recently rose to local fame when they donated countless coffees and drinks to tired firefighters. This generous and selfless act, however, was not the Gurr’s first act of local generosity. They have built their business around their desire to care for others, and regularly offer their support to local charity events and fundraisers, without expectation of accolades or kudos. The Hennessy Coffee owners have attended many local events this year, including voting day and Brickfest at Wirreanda Public School, Grandparents day, Beanie for Brain Cancer (Mark Hughes Foundation) and Pink Stumps day for Breast Cancer at Medowie

Their latest proud moment as a business found them attending the Medowie Fire Brigade on Friday night at 6:45pm during the Lone Pine fire, serving all night and not finishing their service until Saturday at 10pm. They served our tired, hardworking firefighters hundreds of free cold drinks and hot coffees, and used social media to facilitate the re-stocking of food stores for the brigade members by countless community members. WITH the recent Lone Pine/ Medowie bushfire burning approximately 9036ha over a matter of days and summer quickly approaching, bushfires have been the topic of conversation for many locals. Attention is now turning to how best to protect their own property. The Rural Fire Service’s Medowie Brigade provides
information to members and groups within the community about establishing an effective fire plan. A four-step “Get Ready For A Bush Fire” guide has been produced by the NSW Rural Fire Service and issued to the Medowie community. The steps include: discuss what you will do in a bush fire, prepare your home and get ready, know the bush fire alert levels, and keep key

What makes the story of these two young men special is that these two boys started early intervention at Port Stephens together, at the age of three, and have pretty much been together ever since, throughout their school years at Wirreanda Public School, and now as they continue this journey together at Irrawang High School. The boys have been going to transition visits at Irrawang, which will prepare

them for the big transition next year. The boys have been at different times of the school day to experience the different routines and the way that high school runs compared to primary school. The next visit for the boys will be a “Friendship Building” visit where the boys will visit the high school and go to the movies with the other additional needs students already attending the high school. Both boys are very excited and a little nervous, but are looking forward to high school next year. Both families of the boys are so very proud of them and how far they have come. Symone Cunningham, Joel’s Mother, told News Of The Area, “The boys are well known and loved in the Medowie community, and it is wonderful to see them taking this step together, they have made us so proud.”

State Cup dreams
PORT Hunter Marauders Touch Footy is a competition encompassing Newcastle, Maitland and Medowie. One such team based in Medowie is striving to take out next month’s State Cup, and considering their recent success, they have every chance of doing so. After taking out the Hunter Premier Touch competition last season, the mixed team comprising of six women and eight men, ranging in age from 19 to over 35, has had a successful 2016. After finishing runners-up at regional level, the plucky Medowians went on to claim the Country Championship, a feat that has now seen them ranked third for the upcoming State Cup. “Winning the Country Champs was unexpected so we’ve lost the underdogs tag now,” team member Jamie CONTINUED Page 6
