MORE than fourteen cars were vandalised last week in Medowie, in a pointless and vindictive attack on
residents. The streets surrounding and including Rosewood were targeted, with many cars suffering damage. Some cars had a single
tyre slashed, others two, and some were also scratched significantly. One resident, who wishes to remain anonymous after the ordeal, told News Of The

New flight destination now available

FlyPelican have announced that flights between Newcastle Airport and Coffs Harbour will commence on Monday 17 October 2016. The Newcastle based independent regional airline operates a fleet of 19 seat pressurised British Aerospace Jetstream 32 aircraft. FlyPelican CEO Paul Graham said, “FlyPelican is very excited to be adding yet more routes to its network. Newcastle to Coffs Harbour is very well suited to our Jetstream 32 aircraft that seats 19 passengers.” The flight time is just under 50 minutes and will be operating weekday services and a Sunday service. A little act of kindness goes a long way By Rachael VAUGHAN THIS News Of The Area reporter was delighted to stumble upon a new wave of ‘random acts of kindness’ (RAOK) that has come to Medowie. Started in Canberra, by a design business called ‘Love&Charm Designs’, these cards are being created FREE for anyone who wishes to accept some, and begin their own RAOK - all you are asked to do is cover the $1.80 postage cost!
Whilst word had begun spreading about these cards, News Of The Area were delighted to see one turn up in local cafe ‘Sportz Cafe’. Some kind person paid for the coffee of the person ordering behind them, and left this card. That person in turn contacted News Of The Area to express their delight in the small act of kindness bestowed on them on what happened to be a tough day. They wish to remain anonymous as they decide how they will pass their card
THERE is a new app being targeted to the ‘tween’ markets, and experts are warning parents to be extra vigilant with their children’s phones. The app in question ‘Musical.ly’ is under the spotlight, along with many others that are causing a concern for parents. Nobody could have predicted how fast Musical.ly became popular when it was first launched a few months ago. Targeted predominantly towards girls under 13, it went from ‘nothing to everything’ in the space of a few days and parents almost gave themselves whiplash trying to understand this new ‘thing’ that had consumed their young daughters. Children upload short clips of themselves lip-syncing and dancing to popular music. Publicly raised concerns regarding these type of apps are based around that fact that kids tend to mimic what they

Another concern surfaced is the reality that these clips, that children are uploading, can be misused by the wrong adults. Computer expert, Gavin Smit has studied networking and ‘cyber-security’. Mr Smith told News Of The Area, “If there’s one suggestion I’d make that is for parents to take some time to understand the apps their kids are using and ensure privacy settings are turned on and location settings are off.” “Something as simple as your child making these clips in their school uniform and ‘friending’ people they don’t know is a recipe for disaster,” Mr Smith said. The other concerning aspect of this particular app is that it’s impossible to delete your account. The app doesn’t allow it. You can remove the app from your device but your account remains. No matter how mature your child, no matter how you think you can monitor it, some of these apps are just not worth the risk.

Crime Report from the Station By Rachael VAUGHAN IN Police news, the message is clear, the Police need to hear what is happening in our area for things to happen. Of the current 25 reports from the entire Port Stephens LAC, only four are from Medowie. The Port Stephens Local Area Command said they are not having information fed back to them and reported through the appropriate channels. Those correct channels you have as options are; - emergency - dial 000 - No emergency, but you would like to see an officer, call the station and request it on 0249837599 - Police assistance line on 131444 to report damage to property, theft, vandalism etc. - Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000 to report criminal activity in the area and lodge a report. After meeting with Port Stephens officer on Monday morning, local officers confirmed the arrest of two individuals who committed serious crimes affecting Medowie and the Port

Stephens area. Daniel Bailey, 26, was arrested last week and charged with the home invasion on Ford Avenue, Medowie on 3 September this year. He was one of four men who attended the address. Two waited outside, whilst two entered the residence and threatened the people inside. Nothing was taken during the incident however left the occupants very upset. He was charged with Aggravated Break and Enter and commit serious indictable offence and disqualified driving. He was bail refused and appeared before the Maitland Local Court where bail was also refused. In other news, Stephen Garland, resident of Newcastle and Nomads OMCG member, was arrested this week and charged with alleged interstate freighting of illegal drugs – including the supply of the Port Stephens area. A freight package MDMA was intercepted, with a street value of $750,000.

IRRAWANG High has a strong tradition of welcoming an international student into their school family each year. This year, that welcome has been extended to seventeen year old Lalie Cornic, a French Exchange student who will be with them until the end of the year. The Student Exchange Australia/New Zealand program offers students up until the age of 18 short and long term experiences in many countries around the world. Studying compulsory English at school from the age of six has ensured Lalie has a wonderful grasp of our language. Coming from a small town near Toulouse in the south of France, Lalie is loving our warm summer weather, and looking forward to our much milder winter. As an avid sportswoman who participates in skiing, boxing and running, Lalie is thoroughly enjoying staying

Irrawang Students excel at School Steer Challenge By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Irrawang High School Agricultural Show team and their driver and teacher Ms Henry, visited Tocal College last week with Bruce the steer for the 2016 School Steer Challenge. Students from 12 schools prepared and presented their steers and were marked on weight, judging, parading, and oral components. This competition is for
school students to enter their Prime Beef cattle to be judged by an experienced Cattle Judge. Congratulations goes to Rachael Godfrey who placed First, and Dylan Petith who placed fourth in the Junior Novice Cattle Judging Category. The following day the students attended the Singleton Prime Stock Competition and entered Bruce in the Paraders Category to show off their
parading and ring skills. Following the Hoof Judging, those cattle entered in the Hoof and Hook sections are sent to the abattoirs, processed, then judged to assess each carcass for its quality. This event allows students to compare the influence and aspects of breed, body types and feeding techniques, in the ring and on the hook. Congratulations goes to the students for their fine representation of their school.
MEMBER for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, has raised the plight of Port Stephens Koalas in Parliament this week. Kate Washington paid tribute to just some of the koalas who have recently perished due to injuries and illness, largely due to loss of habitat. Each of the Koalas had been cared for, or attended to, by the committee volunteers of the Hunter Preservation Society. Each tragic death is an emotional burden for local volunteer carers. Kate Washington took the opportunity during Save the Koala month to recall these recent deaths, and highlight the incredible work undertaken by the Hunter Koala Preservation Society in rescuing and o Phot ery Gall line On
toward a future where our children’s children will not see Koalas in the wild in Port Stephens.” It is currently Koala breeding season, so we are seeing Koalas moving a lot more which increases the risk of fatalities, particularly from car impacts. Motorists are urged to take care when travelling in Port Stephens, particularly along Port Stephens Drive, where we know there have already been thirty Koalas killed on that same stretch. “I support the Hunter Koala Preservation Society’s push for a local Koala Hospital – if we don’t act, Port Stephens Koalas will become extinct,” Kate Washington told News Of The Area.

FIVE Irrawang High School students have had a successful year in their chosen sport, and their school representatives are proud of their success, and the positive image and example it sets for their fellow students. Jack Lawrence in year seven and year eight students Dane Batman-Blackwood, Nicholas Hopper, Matthew Beasley and Darcy Butters were Premiers as well as Grand Final Winners of the
Inter-District U14 C Grade. They played in the U14/1 team for Medowie Football Club. The game was a nail biter as it went to extra time when it was a NIL all draw at full time. With two minutes of extra time to go, Medowie scored and won 1-0 against South Wallsend. Congratulations to you all, gentlemen! Good luck for next season, and thank you for setting a fine example for young players behind you coming up in the club.
