THE Medowie community may be noticing a familiar face missing from their weekly Coles Shop. Tina Brown, the friendly and welcoming Coles staffer so many of us have come to know and love, has hung up the register roll and retired. Tina grew up in the northern suburbs of Sydney, before moving to Medowie with her husband and his new work role in 1992. TIna began her working at Coles back when it was still a Bi-Lo in August 2010, and has seen some big changes not only in the store, but in Medowie in General. TIna told News Of The Area, “When we came here to live there was a small store where the chemist now is, a takeaway food

shop, the chemist although much smaller, a butcher, newsagents and post office.” “It was still a farming community for the main part, it was a very tight community and I just loved it.” “We all, without exception, knew each other,” she said. Tina is well respected in the community for her efforts in fundraising for local community groups, charities and national fundraisers alike. Over the years at coles, she has been the organiser of many charitable events, raising thousands of dollars during her time there. Tina said, “The red kite fundraiser in 2016 was a particular highlight, as we made many dozens of red

The township of Medowie is a growing community with several property developments set to increase the population significantly over the next decade. Businesses, including national corporations such as Woolworths Group, have acted already with the addition of the Woolworths supermarket well and truly established in the community with other commercial enterprises in the pipeline. Artists plan workshops

THE Tilligerry Art Group (TAG) have hit the ground running in 2018 and have a wonderful year planned in their new headquarters, opened last year in Lemon Tree Passage. Four exciting workshops are coming up, and residents and friends alike are invited to sign up and join one of these learning experiences. TAG are a wonderful collection of people, from the hobby artist through to professional. Everyone is welcome, and it is a wonderful way to meet new people and try your hand at something different. First up is an ‘Introduction to Tromp L’Oeil Art’ for intermediate artists on the 30 April from 9am to 3pm. Jeanette Matts will be running the workshop, and told News Of The Area it has been a joy to recreate again now she is retired and living on the Tilligerry Peninsula for the last 15 years. Jeanette said,”Over the years I have conducted many art workshops in and around

THE NSW Police Legacy program, Backup for life, was established to support police officers leaving the NSW Police Force to transition from police to civilian life. The program offers counselling, mentoring, workshops, and financial assistance. Mr Paul Hudson is a retired Inspector of Police after almost 35 years of service. Recently, he started volunteering with the Police Legacy Program, Backup for Life program in 2017, which is a program run as part of Police Legacy, because, “I see there is a need for someone to be there to offer assistance to retired and serving police who are experiencing post stress issues.” “Needs to be someone to offer assistance and give advice.” “Help people to transition from police life back into community life.” “As a retired police officer myself, I have empathy with the emotions and feelings they may be feeling while in the Police Force.” The Backup for Life program requires volunteers to undergo professional training in mental health, including dealing with and recognising mental health issues, and lending support to those in need. In delivering the free program Paul said, “We work in close liaison with others such as Police

The second workshop will be an exciting class on ‘Watercolour for Beginners by Di Swain on 5 May, from 9:30am to 12:30. Di Swain is one of the most productive and best known of Tilligerry Artists. She is largely self-taught, except for attending some classes and workshops with well-known local artist Cheryl Cusack. The third workshop in the series will be a morning class over three dates - 7, 14 and 21 July from 9:30am until 12:30. This class will teach attendees how to knit soft toys. The aim of this workshop is for students to create a soft toy that is safe for infants, is

Since moving to the area, they quickly became part

of the community and are well known to locals and newcomers alike. Paul has extensive experience in helping the community and, amongst other roles, is a Licenced Lay Minister for the Anglican Church, is involved in Pastoral Care, and is a Supervisor of those performing Community Service Orders. Many young children will know Paul as “Mr Music” and he is proud to get a call out when he is shopping in Medowie due to his involvement in the children’s ministry, Mainly Music. No Comply no Wi-Fi PORT Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer last week joined Port Stephens Duty MLC, Catherine Cusack to announce that Council has been awarded $60,000 by the NSW Government for an innovative plan to tackle litter using Wi-Fi. The ‘Pop Shove it’ in the Bin, if you ‘No Comply’ no Wi-Fi project will use a positive behavior reward system to encourage skaters at Boomerang Park, Raymond Terrace to do the right thing with their litter. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says this is a new and exciting

approach to dealing with a problem like litter. “Port Stephens Council is incredibly innovative in the litter prevention space, and this grant will allow us to trial a new approach of rewarding people who do the right thing and look after our environment. “As the name suggests, the trial will deliver free, solar generated Wi-Fi internet through the bin as reward for putting litter in it,” Mayor Palmer said. “It’s an exciting idea, which if successful, could be rolled out to other parts

of our region,” he added. Council Rangers will regularly patrol the area and will distribute in-car litter bags to target littering from vehicles visiting the park, while Permanent Tosser! signage will be installed to promote the anti-litter message. The new litter campaign will also be integrated into the local primary schools’ waste education programs. Port Stephens Council’s initiative is one of 18 projects successfully funded through round 4 of the Litter Prevention Grants program.

There are so many hazards out there. Paths are loaded with dogs on extendable leads, people dawdling in their activewear, cyclists with bells that scare the bejesus out of us, nannas on motor scooters, stray toddlers, yogis practising mindfulness, roller skating enthusiasts, teenagers carrying hottedup sound systems on their shoulders, and various other combinations that are destined to end in a major collision. Now, add to the mix the ever-growing number of individuals who have their heads permanently bowed, as though praying to their Smartphones, and every outing is a catastrophe. You can try clapping very loudly before the collision takes place. From experience this works quite well, even though people will look at you as though you are a bit of a loony. House Prices Are Up

ACCORDING to licensee of Coastal Real Estate, Kalah Mc Intosh, the Lemon Tree Passage median house price alone has risen some 30% over the last three years.This is in stark contrast to the three preceding years when the total growth was a mere 4.8%. The median Tanilba Bay house sale price now stands at $426 500, an increase of 13% on the previous year which was up 8.6% on the year before that ($345 000). Other interesting statistics to emerge about Lemon Tree show a breakdown of occupancy as follows: 40% of dwellings

Ray said, “Damien Kolbas and Talysa Trevallion who were trained at my Medowie dance studio won a National Scholarship, which enabled them to travel to the United Kingdom to represent Australia at the British and World Ballroom Dance Championships.” “No mean feat when you consider they were up against the best in Australia to win this scholarship, and they were trained here in Medowie after discovering the joy and love of dancing when I was a dance teacher at their Primary School.” Medowie residents Ty Statham and Danielle Pretty also have a string of great successes on the dance floor, as well as a number of others. For many people, the mere act of making the decision to take up dancing has changed their lives, it has given them new confidence, new social skills, friendship, while having fun and exercising to great music. SINCE 2005, Medowie has been home to some of Australia`s top Ballroom Dancers, who have been trained and coached here in Medowie. They are coached by Ray Stuart, who is a National Adjudicator on the Australian Dancing Board and Director of the Society of Australian Teachers of Dancing, which is a national not for profit body dedicated to the promotion of Ballroom Dancing. Ballroom dancing is

an activity that is not well known to the general public, but amazingly has tens of thousands of dedicated dancers all over Australia who participate in the various styles of Ballroom Dancing. Gary and Cheryl Roberts started dancing with Ray about nine years ago as raw beginners who had never danced before, and are trained at his Medowie studio, which has a fully sprung 200 square metre dance floor. Ray Stuart told News Of The Area, “After making the decision to have a shot at the
