Celebrating it’s 26th anniversary this year, Star Struck 2018 saw over 120 schools represented, with over 3500 performers. The theme this year ‘Connect’ explored the fascinating and poignant connections our Public School students need throughout their upbringing to forge a positive future, as happy and confident adults. The professional production is presented and supported by the Hunter Office of the NSW Department of Education and Communities. Star Struck has become so much more than a yearly musical production, it has become a yearly tradition for schools, and an invaluable memory for students who have grown through their high school years participating in the show every year. 500,000 Steps for Mum Container Spill Response

IMAGINE waking up one day to find that your skin has hardened. Your skin growing extra layer upon layer to the point where you are unable to bend or move any of your limbs. For Tamara Kennedy’s mother, Trish Rainbow-Noack, this is her new reality, as her body slowly turns to stone. Almost two years ago she was diagnosed with a debilitating disease called scleroderma. It causes hardening of the skin and affects the internal organs like the heart, liver and kidneys. It is a life-threatening disease, for which there is no cure. Last year, Tamara and her family started a legacy to raise awareness and money for ongoing research to hopefully find a cure, they put on their walking shoes and walked over 470km (500,000 steps) from Narellan to Ariah Park (a little town in the Riverina) raising over $30,000. They have just begun on this year’s trip, and are on their way to Port Stephens They have raised the bar, and are in the process of walking further than before with 500km in two weeks from Port Macquarie to Narellan from 16 June - 29 June. Tamara Kennedy told News Of The Area, “It will be an epic journey following the coastline, we will be climbing hills like we have never climbed before.”

The equivalent of walking a marathon every day for two weeks. No easy feat, but it is nothing compared to what people living with Scleroderma go through every single day. If you’d like to catch Tamara and her team along their journey, you can find them in the following local locations. Bulahdelah on June 20, and meeting up with locals that night at Plough Inn Hotel Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens on the June 21 and meeting up with locals at Tea Gardens Hotel before going across the Nelson Bay for 22 June. From there, Tamara and her team will walk from Nelson

Bay, through Williamtown to Newcastle. Tamara told News Of The Area, “Our mission for this walk is to raise awareness about Scleroderma, every person we engage along the way is one more person who now knows about this horrible disease.” ‘We are amazed at how these local communities along the way have embraced what we are doing and how generous they have been.” “Every dollar we raise along the way is going towards Scleroderma research, and hopefully one day they will find a cure,” she said.

IN the wake of 83 containers being swept off YM Efficiency off Port Stephens the response to the debris has been fast and efficient. During a community presentation by clean-up contractor Varley and the NSW Department of Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) an outline of what has been done, and what the continuing effort will be, in relation to the 81 containers which are presumed to now be sitting on the seabed in depths estimated to be up to 120 metres was provided. Angus Mitchell the State Marine Pollution Controller outlined that the debris collected so far had come the 83 containers lost at sea and potentially another 53 containers which were damaged in the incident. He also noted that while 83 containers was a significant number to be lost that 10,000 containers are lost annually across the globe. Future planning includes seeking vessels with capabilities to identify and map containers on the sea bed, investigations will be based on computer modelling. Bob Baldwin

spokesperson for Varley told News Of The Area, “We believe that we have collected 90-95 percent of the debris with the remaining debris located in inaccessible pockets which will require specialist teams and possibly workers abseiling cliff faces to finalise the cleanup.” He believes that the weather will dictate when will be collected. Varley has collected the debris focusing on leaving the beaches and waterways of Port Stephens and the Mid North Coast better than they were before the incident. Locals have expressed concerns around the foam washed up and were relieved that it is not the type of plastic that breaks into micro plastic, it has been identified as yoga

mats, not polystyrene. It is anticipated that more debris will eventually wash ashore, potentially for a period extending up to ten years, however Angus Mitchell of RMS gave assurances that the local Councils, nor the State Government would not be called on to foot the continuing clean-up bill. Local businesses that lose trade as a result of the container incident, including fishermen, can lodge a claim against the YM Efficiency. It is unlikely that the remaining containers will be recovered, rather the containers may be left, forming man made reefs. The public is urged to keep reporting all debris sighted to RMS on 131236.

Dear Denise, Can you tell me anything about a ‘Winter Styling Edge’. Jason M. When presenting your home to the property market during winter think about adding warmth. You can do this with colour, lighting, textures and temperature. As a sales agent it is always wonderful when you have home sellers who take the time, when possible, to light the wood fire or have the air conditioner on warm ready for your sales inspections. Few would argue that a wood fire not only provides warmth but also a gorgeous comforting ambience as well. Have the lights on in each room plus any reading lamps, which cast a lovely warm glow. With your soft furnishings create a warm rich ambience with colour and texture. Either with browns, rusts, caramels and creams or bold burgundies, teals, navy’s and green’s. Velvet and wool are lovely textures for winter styling and are always beautiful in throw rugs and cushions. Doing small things like this can make a huge difference to a homes presentation. Showing a cold and unattractive home is a far less desirable alternative, resulting in the property proving harder to sell and ultimately possibly selling for less money. WHAT to do when, for whatever reason, you’re left alone in life with time on your hands? This was the situation faced by the happy band of campervan owners who took up station on Tilligerry RSL’s oval recently. A spokesperson for the group said that they were affiliated with the MHCA (Motor Home Club Of Australia), a 100,000 strong group of like minded souls who travel far and wide. “We call ourselves the ‘Eagles’ and have 156 members. Mostly we ramble around the Lower Hunter,” she said. “We try to plan our outings around fairs and events,”she added.

“Recently we travelled to Wollembi, Paterson and Broke and soon we will be off to Stroud for the annual Brick throwing festival.” The Eagles send out scouts to ‘sus out’ varied locations as well as getting feedback from other groups when deciding where to go. In the case of this solo group they had been recommended to camp out at the Tilligerry Scout Hall but it was considered too small. The nearby RSL Oval proved to be ideal for the expected 30 mobile homes. Another member stated that their ‘Leave no Trace’ policy was

rigidly enforced and they were welcomed with open arms wherever they went. “We are off to the RSL for the raffles and a meal tonight,” he said “and a few of our members might chance their luck on the pokies. It’s a win,win all ‘round,” he added. When we mentioned the ‘Dump Point’ for waste located in Henderson Park LTP we were informed that they were well aware of it. Infact they were proud of that the MHCA had provided many such facilities Nationwide in tandem with the Federal Government which had injected some $600,000 into the scheme’s rollout.

My son just got his L plates. I am absolutely terrified about taking him for driving lessons but I can’t afford private lessons for him to get his hours up. What should I do? Mrs PA, Medowie Dear Mrs PA, I have never understood the concept of parents teaching their kids to drive. Putting your teenager behind the wheel when you have no access to the brake just seems like sheer insanity to me. It was certainly sheer insanity when my parents taught me to drive. I ended up mounting the gutter one time and clearing the scene of all pedestrians. It took me three attempts to get my licence, which was humiliating and expensive. On the second attempt I would have passed, but when I parked too close to the car next to me and asked the instructor to crawl across and get out my side, it was all over Red Rover. Even now, after decades of driving, I still can’t reverse park or do an effective hill start (once I had to get a policeman to do my hill start for me – I wish I had made that up, but it is true). Honestly, I have no idea what to do at those four-way intersections where there is a stop sign on each corner. I make eye-contact with the person opposite or do a funny stop-start movement, similar to when you move the wrong way when being approached by a person and you end up doing a strange little dance with them, until one person takes control. How about you strike a deal with your son and go halves in the cost of private lessons, at least until he knows the basics. If he can’t afford this, then he probably can’t afford a car anyway. Alternatively, there is a lot of land in Medowie, so maybe start in a paddock and work your way up to the backstreets. I wish you lots of luck. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

INSTIGATED by the Tomaree Business Chamber a study is being conducted on the Nelson Bay CBD with a view to an integrated university education hub in the town. The study is being conducted by a Newcastle University Student. Lachlan Stronach who is conducting the study is in his final year at the University of Newcastle studying business, majoring in management combined with a degree in innovation and entrepreneurship. Death of Woman Sparks Investigation

AN investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the death of a Lemon Tree Passage woman. Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District are preparing a report for the information of the Coroner, after a 51-year-old woman died in John Hunter Hospital last Monday night.

$15 Million Dollar Spending Spree By Marian SAMPSON

PORT Stephens has seen more than its share of announcements about State Government funded projects over the past weeks with commitments for over $18 million dollars being pledged. The funds are, eight million dollars for Tomaree Community Hospital’s OneHealth project, one million dollars Tea Gardens Police Station, and now adding 6.7 million for the Tomaree Coastal Walk, three million dollars for the Koala Hospital and $30,000 for Medowie Public School OSH Care. Councillor Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “This is a great commitment from the Berejiklian Government, this funding is 2018/19 Budget announcements, with the funds allocated for the next financial year.” She believes that the Tomaree Coastal Walk will be completed over a four year period. “These are not promises - they are secured, allocated funds.”

Also counting their cash are the Raymond Terrace Soccer Club who have a $2,800 cheque in their hands. The State Government spending on the $1 million dollar upgrades to Apex Park and Robinson Reserve is already under way and will continue into the future. The $810,000 Hunter courts video and evidence upgrades are completed spending the Attorney-General visited Raymond Terrace Court House to officially open the recently completed work. The $3 million koala hospital funds are being released to Port Stephens Council. “Everyone benefits from these investments that make Port Stephens a safer, more family-friendly community and enhances our special recreational opportunities and love of sport.” Councillor Abbott felt that it is hard to choose the most important investment being made in Port Stephens at present “The Koala Hospital is iconic and will preserve our beloved koalas and ensure volunteers have the resources they need, it’s a very special project, and making the coastal walk more accessible

and safe for those who struggle on difficult tracks will be a fantastic experience for natureloving locals who have been missing out.” she said. Councillor Abbott has also made strong representations in relation to the fulfillment of the $70 million pledge to upgrade Nelson Bay Road and to plan the Fingal Link Road. Snake Tails Share Indigenous Sustainable Practices By Marian SAMPSON

STUDENTS from Tomaree Public School years 5 and 6 and Tomaree High School years 7 and 8 joined together to learn about how snakes and lizards form part of the food chain. Snake Tails was organised by Tomaree High School Teacher Linda Hazell as it works with the current science curriculum. On display were the Fierce Snake, The Australian Brown Snake, the tiger snake and the Red Belly Black Snake. Presenter Bob Withey shared his experiences with snakes and a trip into Arnhem Land where he lived with Indigenous Australians mirroring the ways that their ancestors had lived on the land for thousands of years. Along with the snakes students learnt about Goannas and Bearded Lizards. The Snake Tails presentation also drew on sustainable practices of the Indigenous people who only take what they can eat.

Work Function ends in Marriage

NEWS Of The Area had reason to celebrate last week, when one of their favourite former employees tied the knot. Tea Gardens local, Dawn Johnston married Neville Goodwin in a delightful ceremony at Brandy Hill. The pair met two years ago at a News Of The Area work function at the Karuah RSL. It was love at first sight. “I’ve married the woman of my dreams,” Neville said. Dawn, recently retired from delivering the News Of The Area, after four years of loading up her car with hundreds of newspapers and heading off every Wednesday. In all those years she only

missed one delivery day. Dawn has lived in Tea Gardens for the past 12 years, but the newly weds have taken the plunge and are building a new home for their new life together in Karuah. Wedding guests enjoyed a delicious celebration lunch at the River Hotel in Raymond Terrace. “I couldn’t be happier,” Dawn said. Wishing the couple well, Geoff Scully said, ”On behalf of the guests, which include friends from yesteryear, new friends and family, we wish you great longevity.” “We hope that your next life together is as wonderful as you can make it, and we extend to you much love and affection.”

The winners for this week were; Lily Kennedy from Karuah Public School, for her outstanding behaviour every day, and everywhere, particularly on the bus. Lily was personally chosen by the bus company to become a bus monitor because of how she conducts herself whilst travelling on the bus. Jhaquai Boney from Irrawang Public School, for returning a mobile phone that he found to the rightful owner, and also for caring for a lost child at MarketPlace until their found their parent. Cody Heard from Seaham Public School, for his care of the

Seaham School environment. Cody used his own play time to pick up rubbish near his classroom without being asked to. Hannah Williams from Irrawang High School, for assisting an eight year old student from Irrawang Public School back to the high school sick bay after he cut his head following a fall at the bus stop. Jack Moyle from Salt Ash Public School, for outstanding consideration of others in all setting, including at school, on excursions and in the community. He always displays positive values everywhere he goes. Brandon Sinclair from Hunter River High School, for showing respect and acting responsibly on an excursion when a fellow student endured a medical incident. By David & Rhona BIRSS Water Wonderland round-up for Nelson Bay Golf Club: The Golf Club hosted the 40th Water Wonderland Tournament over the 9th and 10th. “Not even the 55 mls of rain could dampen the enthusiasm of the 140 players who registered for the Tournament. Many of the players attended the event in 2007, the weekend the Pasha Bulka was grounded on Nobbys Beach. Facing the weather this weekend, was a walk in the park for these guys.” commented Tournament Director, Ross Skinner. Jason Kelly who first attended the event in 1992 and has returned each year said “all the guys, many with their families, look forward to this event. It is an opportunity to catch up with mates whom you’ve met over the years. The 27 holes provides a challenge to players in all grades. The Clubhouse has a great atmosphere, with the space and the facilities to accommodate everyone. JOSH Bohan, is one of those few people who just has a knack of being very good at just about everything he tries. Especially on the sporting field. Be it soccer, rugby league, zone athletics, zone swimming, touch football, surf life saving or Aussie Rules football, Josh is achieving across the board. Whether it be competing for Wirreanda Public School or weekend sport, Josh throws himself into anything and everything. However, there had to come a time for Josh to make a decision as to which sport he really wanted to concentrate on, and in a strange way, that decision was essentially made for him. “From 9-11 years old he

played two sports, either soccer or rugby league on Saturday and also AFL on Sunday.” Josh’s mother Nikki Bohan told News Of The Area. “However, when he was 11 years old he tried out for the Sydney Swans AFL Academy and was successful, so he needed to make a choice.” That choice was simple, play weekend sports at park football level, or take up the opportunity with the Swans that could lead to bigger things. Josh chose to attend the Sydney Swans Academy. “He made a big commitment, as his decision meant an extra training session each week in Newcastle, on top of his Port Stephens club training, as well as trips to Sydney every second Wednesday during the school term.” said Nikki Bohan.

This has been life for Josh and his family for the last couple of years, and next year life will get even busier with the fortnightly Sydney trips turning into weekly trips. However, Josh and his very supportive family are already seeing the fruits of their labour. “He made the Hunter Regional AFL team last year who played in Parkes as well as this year which was played in Batemans Bay.” said Nikki Bohan. “We’ll also be heading to Canberra after Josh made the NSWPSSA school boys team to compete in the national competition in August.” This is the same competition that many past and present AFL players participated in before they hit the big time. We wish Josh and his family all the best.
