before all heading off to separate secondary schools. Anneka attended St Francis Xavier College, Sarah went to Irrawang High School and Lachlan attended Irrawang High School until Year 10, before moving to Merewether High to complete years 11 and 12. Winners of the

This event was proudly hosted by the Port Stephens Council Youth Advisory Panel. Students from all local high schools were invited, along with mental health stakeholders and representatives. Attendees were asked to discuss the key recommendations from the mental health study ordered by Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY), funded by the Port Stephens Council and the Hunter New England Central Coast Primary Health Network. Anneka told News Of The Area, “The application process was a great experience and I learnt a lot” “The professional interview experience gave me great insight and practice with future interviews and life situations.”
Lachlan White is also studying at Newcastle University, and is completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, whilst also competing at an elite level in sailing. Lachlan told News Of The Area, “I was honoured to be accepted as a recipient in the Mayoral Scholarships.” “The experience was a lot of fun, and I
have put my scholarship to good use for University texts and training costs for Sailing.” The Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarships are awarded yearly. You can find information on the applications opening toward the end of 2017 on the Port Stephens Council Website.

Anneka Zerbes is attending Newcastle
MEDOWIE this week said goodbye to one of its finest, most influential, communityminded residents. Born in 1937 in Carlton, Victoria, Arthur Magrath was the doting husband to his beloved Beryl, loving father to eight sons, adored grandfather to nine grandchildren and much loved great-grandfather to three little ones. Pastor Arthur came to live in Medowie in 1990 and was the Senior Minister of Medowie Assembly of God Church for twenty-five years until his retirement on 12 April 2015. Whilst in Medowie, Pastor Arthur’s heartfelt desire was to show people that God cares for them and so does the Church. He wanted to practically show that love to a world that needs Jesus and did this by opening an Opportunity Knocks (pre-loved clothing – registered charity) in the year 2000, running Work for the Dole projects and running Computers for Seniors programs. He also opened a food program, now called Food Way, that
provide long life food, bread, fruit and vegetables along with food parcels for emergency relief assistance. The team at Food Way also cook meals that are given away to those in need, plus provide other welfare assistance to those struggling financially. In between these endeavours, Arthur was the Chaplain for the Fire Brigade and was on the Police Advisory Committee for some time. He also helped empty the charity clothing collection bins, ran the Church office, preached, lead Church
praise and worship, set up halls and still managed to find time to chat to anyone who wanted to talk. Arthur was a family man and loved nothing better than to have his family around him or chat on the phone to them. Some of his happiest days were spent at family gatherings reminiscing about stories of old times. Many people today are thankful for Pastor Arthur’s spiritual influence, his love and support, which has positively affected their life. We leave you with Arthur’s own words

more than 10,000 children and young people aged 12-24 years in the Port Stephens Local Government Area. The research team found that the the study highlighted the most common issues for young people are anxiety, depression and drug use. The forum had a guest speaker, Nic Newling, speak to the attendees, delivering an impassioned speech and
motivating the students to speak up and speak out. Nic Newling lived through the experience of suffering with a mood disorder throughout high school and losing his brother to suicide. He has since dedicated himself to changing the way mental illness is addressed in schools, workplaces, and communities. Nic has reached millions of people through television, live talks, radio, print, online, documentaries, and eHealth programs. Students worked hard during the busy, informationfilled day, and came up with invaluable insights. Port Stephens Youth Advisory Panel representative Mahaylia Soars told News Of The Area, “Mental Health is
so very important.” “Whilst it is becoming more socially acceptable to talk about these things, we need to keep working hard to ensure this comfortability to ask for support continues.” “I want all young people to feel confident about speaking out about their mental health, and asking for help if they need it,” she said. Mounds turned into eyesore By Rachael VAUGHAN
MEDOWIE residents will be familiar with the landscaped mounds at the roundabout entrance to Medowie on Medowie and Richardson Roads. The history behind the Campvale landscape mounds goes back to October 2012 when members of our Tidy Towns committee expressed concerns about untidy looking entrances into our community with piles of road building materials, litter, bulky goods rubbish and cars for sale all over the intersection corners. Councillor Geoff Dingle said he approached Peter Murray who was the Port Stephens Council Assets manager at the time and he agreed the Tidy Towns committee could plan to build boomerang style mounds in appropriate locations on the North East and North West corners. They started with the smaller mound on the North East corner, building a core, then overlaying with topsoil and then mulch.

locals and visitors.” “However, it has been a real struggle to establish good plant coverage when battling massive loss of plants from thieves, vandalism, damage from four wheel drives, interference from Ausgrid
and their contractors digging up our plantings and parking equipment and concrete poles all over our efforts.” “With no water on site, we have struggled to establish plants and the extreme hot weather and exposed nature
of the site has taken its toll,” he said. Despite all these efforts to stymie them, Medowie Tidy Towns has valiantly persisted, and feel they are gradually winning. The mounds are slowing getting where they want them, to be reasonably self-sustaining with moderate pruning and weed management. Councillor Dingle said, “We are now commencing negotiation with Hunter

MEDOWIE is a long way from Iran, but for one local family, the annual Persian New Year is an ideal opportunity to celebrate their traditional culture. On entering the house, a visitor is greeted by a table set up with a table of traditional items that act as good wishes for the year ahead. The traditional Iranian festival of spring, Nowruz, is known as the start of the New Year for Iranians and other peoples who celebrate the Persian New Year such as Iraq, India, and Afghanistan. The start of the New Year also signals the end of the dreary winter. Although not spring in Australia at this time of the year, the cultural element of the celebration is important for Iranians who live outside their home country. security fencing and installed projections screens in the main halls and office area. In the past twelve months, they have upgraded the sand pit and cover, installed new disability access ramps, upgraded paths, resurfaced the front entrance car park and installed solar panels to reduce our energy bill. They have replaced the old air conditioner with more energy efficient air conditioners in the front office areas and upgraded carpets to all office areas. They are also in the process of getting quotes to upgrade one of two kitchens and are preparing to upgrade window furnishings throughout the hall. Medowie community centre is the best and busiest example of a multifunction community facility in Port Stephens, with 50 plus user groups booking and using the facilities every month. It supports disability
groups, community and Council sponsored playgroups and is the permanent location for our community nurse taking care of the health of newborns and their mothers and caregivers. Geoff Dingle told News Of The Area, “The days when groups operated and managed their own halls is long gone with costs far exceeding benefits.” “We keep our costs low so everyone has the opportunity to use the facilities.” Despite rumours that there are no available bookings slots, this is not the case. With two halls and two fully equipped kitchens, two sets of amenities, a committee function room and three office spaces, Kevin Tomlinson, the centre caretaker, is always able to take care of new enquiries for bookings. The initiative consists of at-risk youth being collected from home before school starts to take part in a boxing training session. The sessions are conducted by local police officers from various sections including general duties, youth liaison officers, detectives, water police and highway patrol. The aim is to develop a stronger relationship between those in law enforcement and those deemed to be at risk of breaking the law or disengaging from formal education. Port Stephens Commander Superintendent Chris Craner is a big supporter of the initiative. “This project gave the youth and local police a chance to build relationships in a relaxed environment and

So, when Supt Craner took a holiday to Cape Town and saw his long-time friend Horatius Feni conducting a similar initiative for the same reasons, he knew he could help. TWELVE-year-old Medowie resident Brooke Nicholson will be shaving her waistlength hair as part of the World’s Greatest Shave. Her original goal of raising $250 for blood cancer research was reached within her first day of signing up, and she has now raised $450.
The shave helps provide vital research into lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma, with blood cancer being the third most common type of cancer-related death in Australia. It has claimed more lives than breast cancer or melanoma. Brooke told News Of The Area, “I decided to shave my

With all the talk about reduced penalty rates in the catering industries and how the employers will be able to employ more staff I don’t think on the whole that this will happen. You would think on the lines of paying less wages to their staff they would cut out all together the surcharges that they impose on Sundays and Public Holidays either upfront or hidden. I am of the opinion the staff numbers will remain the same as the surcharges will. I will wait and see if there’s any changes. JC, Tanilba Bay Dear JC, In order to answer your question (which was more of a statement or opinion, but hey, I’m up for a challenge) I drove to my favourite restaurant to do some undercover research. As always, the service was impeccable. There was a young staff member there who was so professional that she should not only control food and beverage operations, but potentially the entire country. I am confident her high-level diplomacy skills, energy and persuasive ability would run rings around many executives. She doesn’t sweat, she sparkles. She reinvents swine froth into pork belly foam and dodgy apple pie into tart aux pommes. Now I’m not sure what this young lady earns, probably not a lot, and yet she sashays past tables, flings serviettes like a bullfighter, cracks pepper over main meals with aplomb and makes you feel, just for a few short hours, that it is worth dropping your entire weekly pay for a three course meal. Now that’s talent. But to your letter. Will surcharges come down with penalty rate reductions? By that stage of your letter, I was on my third glass of red, care of Ms Hospitality 2017, and therefore any ability to think critically was somewhat compromised. So I don’t know, in short, if surcharges will come down or if more staff will be employed, but I did have a wonderful night. I may be poorer in the back pocket, but I’m experientially richer, and for that, JC, I thank you.

children, and one grandchild. Des told News Of The Area, “I, like most people, had little interest in the day to day running of our local council and only gleaned my opinion of what was being done by the same old ‘what I saw in the paper or heard in the pub’ and ‘did it affect me’ approach.” “That was until such time as ‘it did affect me’ came into play with a proposed sand mine two doors up the road from my property on Cabbage Tree Road and I attended a council meeting.” “My god, what an eye opener that was, within ten minutes I had made up my mind that I must do something here,” he said. Further council meeting attendances reinforced Des’s desire to run for council. “I must say that I am very pleased to see that the Medowie Progress Association has been able to form into a fantastic conduit for people to get their ideas into council.”

High Tea Fundraiser

YOU are invited to have a fun ladies day out, whilst helping the women of the Philippines. Independent Arbonne consultant Katie Lavender is hosting a “Shine Bright” High Tea fundraiser, raising funds for a community in Manila, Philippines. The fundraiser, which doubles as a fashion parade and shopping event, will include champagne on arrival, tea, cakes, raffle prizes, and the option to buy any of the clothes exhibited in the fashion parade on the day. The aim of the fundraiser is to assist Katie and five women from Baylife church, in their commitment to help the
women in the Philippines, and their families, move out of poverty. Baylife Church has been supporting the Philippines community of Manila for the last 10 years. The new program aims to give the women the skills, knowledge and finances, to start a business in their local area. On top of this new initiative, the women are aiming to have more ‘mums and bubs’ sponsored in the mums and bubs program developed by Compassion Australia. Katie told News Of The Area, “There are currently forty women and babies in this project, and with every Arbonne pack purchased at the event, the money will go towards including more
women in the program, as well as sponsoring the new business initiative.” “Baylife church has a heart for the people of the Philippines and Uganda, this is evident in the amount of time and money invested in helping the lives of its people.” “Last year, over $2000 was raised as a result of fundraising events throughout the year, which went into buying birthing kits, hand-packed by the women of Baylife, for the mothers-to-be in Uganda,” she said. WHEN you look at the nation of South Africa and the shire of Port Stephens, chances are you wouldn’t think they would have much in common. But then, you would be wrong. Strangely, the ‘sweet science’ of boxing is helping youngsters potentially at risk of disengaging from education or in danger of alcohol and drug abuse to positively engage with local police. At the end of 2016, Port Stephens police, the PCYCs of Raymond Terrace and Nelson Bay, and local business Bowies Boxing and Fitness, combined to show schoolaged youngsters from Port Stephens wide the benefits of boxing training.
