Families with children who have special needs are like all families, in that they benefit from positive community interactions and friendships, but they often face big battles on top of the

cases of special needs which are less visible. They might deal with stares, judgements about their child’s behaviour, or questions that make them feel as though they aren’t raising their children properly, when they in fact are going above and beyond for their children.
Drive Dog park. The dog park, which has seen a significant rise in numbers of residents using the facility, is free for anyone to use, and offers dog owners the chance to safely exercise their pooches off-lead in a safe environment.

A group of likeminded parents have started a new support group for parents of children with special needs in Port Stephens, and they are welcoming new families with open arms. You can find the group on facebook, called ‘Special Needs Support Group, Port Stephens’. Group member Thea White told News Of The Area that the group is for everyone who is living with someone with additional/special needs. “Being a special needs parent can be challenging and I often feel isolated Having a Facebook group helps me feel connected and supported by others who understand,” she said. The group encourages parents to share ideas and information on a broad range of topics, therapies and disabilities and to discuss strategies, share their triumphs and achievements in a setting where all successes are celebrated. No matter where you are on your journey, whether you care for, live with or are someone
with a different ability, whether you have a diagnosis or are still investigating, we are here to support each other. “Whether you have a diagnosis or are still investigating, we are here to support each other,” another group member Melissa Mills, told News Of The Area. “Unfortunately a lot of people don’t understand the loneliness that a lot of parents with special children go through - It’s hard for us as parents to watch your child struggle every day.” “I can’t imagine how hard it is for the children trying to figure out the world around them - It breaks my heart,” Melissa said. Council gives seal of approval PORT Stephens is home to a range of new recreational service providers following the completion of a recent Expression of Interest (EOI) period to commercially operate on Council owned and managed land. Operators range from surf schools to personal trainers and all were
awarded five year leases for selected locations around the Port Stephens Local Government Area. As part of the new process, Council wants to ensure that residents can easily identify compliant operators. Contracts and Services Coordinator, Ian Crawford told News Of The Area a new logo has

Pooches are pleased with new park upgrade FROM Page 1 Councillor Chris Doohan explained that the upgrades were paid for with the remainder of the allocated council ward funding for central ward. Brian Muntz, who resides close to the dog park told News Of The Area, “The exercise area is being extremely well patronised and has been since it first became enclosed - The addition of the permanent water supply both outside and inside is
a great asset and council is to be congratulated for its inclusion.” Neighbouring residents have, until now, been supplying the water for the park in tubs and plastic water dispensers – averaging 10 litres a day during Winter, and about 15-25 litres during the height of Summer. News Of The Area also extends a thank you to those residents who have gone above and beyond to assist with this service until the facility’s upgrades took place.

QUEENSLAND is currently being treated to the creative and performing arts (CAPA) talents of Irrawang High Students this week, with several performances across

the state. After 12 months of planning, fundraising and organising, the 2016 CAPA Great Barrier Reef Tour has hit the road and is headed north. On their way back the

CAPA students, who consist of drum corps, dancers, drama students, singers and cajon players will perform this week at Dreamworld, and at Marketplace Warner in Queensland. They have been invited by
the managers of Marketplace Warner who also manage Raymond Terrace Marketplace to perform and workshop with students from Bray Park State School at the other shopping centre. Word has it they also
performed an impromptu performance for the holiday makers at the Big 4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort where they stayed. A parent of a senior student on the tour told News Of The Area, “It is a wonderful opportunity for our kids to be able to go on these tours – we are so proud of them, they are
so talented and it’s a trip they will remember forever.” All reports coming back from the tour say that the students are wonderfully behaved, and doing the school proud. It is wonderful to see our young people representing our area so beautifully.

While the official EOI process is now complete, Council will continue to accept applications to lease parcels of land throughout the year. HSC exams begin By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE Higher School Certificate exams begin this week, and Medowie’s year 12 students must be feeling the pressure. With so much importance placed upon these exams, and subsequent results, it is a timely and very important reminder that we encourage these young people to not forget to take care of themselves during this stressful time in their lives. If you are a year 12 student, or a support person in the life of a year 12 student, there are some important things to remember.
Make sure to timetable breaks during your study times and maintain social connectedness – staying connected to friends and people who you enjoy spending time with is important. Continue to do things you enjoy – sports, coffee with friends, going to a movie. Of course it is to be expected that you will be spending a lot of time studying, but don’t forget to take time away to take care of yourself mentally. Eat well, sleep well, avoid drugs and alcohol and drink plenty of water each day. Add a bit more self-care time to your timetable as

Self-care activities are different for everyone, but can include things like taking a walk, cuddling a pet, reading a new book, going for a drive to somewhere new, or meditating. ‘Operation Christmas Cards’ this month at the RAAF Williamtown Family Room. Williamtown based personnel joined with staff, spouses and community group members to fold, cut and colour their way to mission success. Operation Christmas Cards was the brainchild of the president of the Williamtown Defence Family Group Incorporated, Mrs Maryke Lee, who leads a dedicated group of volunteers – running an active community program that provides ongoing support to Williamtown based personnel, their spouses and children at home and abroad. Taking a moment out from
the creative card-making production line, Mrs Lee told News Of The Area that Operation Christmas Cards is an important initiative in support of personnel deployed overseas. “Defence members usually have only limited resources available to them on deployment – so sending a hand-made Christmas Card so that our deployed personnel have the opportunity to write a special message and return it to their loved ones at home during the Christmas period is a fantastic gift and a meaningful way in which we can support our troops,” she said. WHEN Kim Oakhill became a mother in September 2012, her world changed forever. Corporate, career driven Kim suddenly began to question her purpose, and wanted to leave a legacy for her children, and to genuinely make this world a better place doing everything in her power to do so. Her newest adventure took flight on Sunday, 2 October 2016, when Kim and her yoga teacher and musician husband, Joel, hosted a private music festival in their backyard in Medowie to spread even more love, and raise funds for a cause dear to their hearts. Kim told News Of The Area, “Last year, we hosted The Festival of Life and Love for my 30th birthday and for our daughter Dusty’s Naming Ceremony - We had over 100 friends and family attend and camp, with live music acts including Blaq, a funk and soul band from Sydney.” “Everyone had such

Three close friends of Kim recently experienced complicated pregnancies resulting in their babies requiring significant care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the John Hunter Hospital. This prompted her to reflect on how blessed and lucky she is to have two perfectly healthy children, and she thought it was a perfect opportunity to make the festival a fundraising event. This year, Kim and Joel organised a Drum Explosion Bongo session with Earthen Rhythms, a flower crown workshop with Rosehip Flowers, a solo artist, Lynn Bowtell, a duo – Kim Mackenzie and Joel Oakhill, and the soulful tunes of Blaq once again. Domino’s Pizza Medowie kindly provided some drastically reduced pizzas, and family and friends generously donated money for pizzas and activities throughout the day. It was a family friendly day of fun, laughter, good music, awesome vibes and of course, love. The total raised was $931, with donations still coming in from Kim and Joel’s family and friends who were unable to attend.

IN 2015, Imugi Taekwondo were awarded 14 NSW National All Styles Championships across three events and multiple age groups. In 2016, nineteen Imugi’s have qualified for the NSW National All Styles Championships. On 23 October 2016, all nineteen will enter the State Championships at Sydney Olympic Park. Many are hoping to defend their titles, while some are new to the tournament scene and hoping for a shot at the gold that they’ve watched their peers previously achieve. The Chief Instructor and founder of Imugi Taekwondo, Chung Sa Nim Tony Gillespie and co-founder Kyo Sa Nim Kelly O’Brien are leading

Tony told News of the Area, “Our Imugi’s have worked hard - I’ve no doubt that many of them will successfully retain their titles, and possibly have a few new ones to add to the tally.” “Regardless of the results I’m proud of each and every one of them - They are passionately dedicated to their art and undeniably committed to each other,” Tony remarked. on the ball, but fumbled it and Medowie’s Ben Woolard kicked the ball into the net for the win, with only two minutes on the clock. The Medowie under 14 boys showed great team spirit, showing compassion to the keeper after his fumble. The kids and parents were ecstatic with the victory. Coaches Steven Hill and Michael Salerno told News Of The Area, “We are so proud of their efforts this year, they have truly done us and themselves proud – 2017 we will try and do it all again!”

Hard work pays off for Under 14’s AFTER being eliminated from the D grade semi-finals in 2015 the Medowie under 14’s soccer team came back a lot more confident and determined to do better in 2016. They trained twice a week to improve their fitness and skill level to compete in a higher grade. The first game was memorable for the wrong reason as one of the players had his ankle broken in two places just 15 minutes into the first game and was taken to hospital. The team managed to go through the regular season with their stats showing them playing 15 games, winning
10, losing 2 with 3 draws. This meant they finished on 33 points top of the ladder - just beating South Wallsend on 32 points for the title of minor premiers. The team met South Wallsend in the first semifinal, with the winner to progress straight to the grand final. Both teams showed plenty of ticker and the score remained Nil all at fulltime - meaning they had to then play extra time, being a semifinal. The team were up to the challenge and the parents had no fingernails left, but South Wallsend kicked a goal in the CONTINUED Page 6
