Scarecrow takeover in Comboyne By Shalise LEESFIELD RIGHT now, the main streets of Comboyne are alive with the colour and creativity of more than 60 scarecrows thanks to the inaugural Comboyne Scarecrow Festival. The interactive scarecrow trail leads festival-goers around the main streets of Comboyne and into local businesses such as Udder Cow Cafe, Eclectic and the Comboyne Farm Store. After viewing the entries, attendees can cast their People's Choice vote for best scarecrow. Scarecrows include “Frida Cowlo” outside of Gnostic Barn; and “Betsy the Cat”, with her blueberry burglar, by local artist Leah Doeland,
outside of the Comboyne Community Centre. Other scarecrow designs include farmers, a fireman, a robot, a surfer, multiple cows, and even an avocado. “It is a great display of the creativity in our community,” festival-goer Joshua Howle told News Of The Area. Owners of the Comboyne Farm Store, Kellie-Jo and Alastair McLaren, were involved in creating the festival. Mr and Mrs McLaren stated that the festival brought people all the way from Newcastle to the small country town. “It's our first time in Comboyne, my family came for the festival, and now we will definitely be back,” Port Macquarie local Mr Howle said. By Luke HADFIELD BIRDON has been named the 2026 Mid North Coast Business of the Year, leading a diverse field of winners recognised at this year’s Mid North Coast Regional Business Awards in Coffs Harbour. The global maritime engineering company capped off a successful evening by also receiving the Excellence in Large Business award. The awards celebrated the achievements of businesses,
organisations and business leaders from across the Mid North Coast region. There were a record 282 entries this year, a significant increase on 189 in 2025. Linked Community Services was among the evening’s biggest winners, receiving Outstanding Community Organisation and Excellence in Innovation. Linked Community Services CEO Carlie Comer was also named Outstanding Business Leader for organisations with
21 employees or more. Port Medical Aesthetics Clinic collected four awards, winning Excellence in Small Business, Excellence in Sustainability and Excellence in Workplace Health and Wellbeing. Clinic director Dr Kristy Kostalas was also recognised as Outstanding Business Leader for organisations with 20 employees or fewer. The Big Banana Fun Park enjoyed a standout evening, receiving Excellence
in Sustainable Tourism and Outstanding Visitor Experience in recognition of its continuing contribution to the region’s visitor economy. The awards highlighted the strength, ambition and diversity of the Mid North Coast business community, Business NSW Regional Director Rod Barnaby said. “These awards celebrate businesses and individuals who are making a significant contribution to our region through innovation, leadership, job creation and community impact,” Mr Barnaby said. “This year’s record entries demonstrate the growing strength, ambition and confidence of the Mid North Coast business community. “Every winner has shown an unwavering commitment to excellence. We’re proud to recognise their achievements on the regional stage.” The Mid North Coast’s collaborative spirit was also recognised, with the Coffs Coast Aviation Partnership and Regional Visitor Economy Collective receiving the Outstanding Visitor and 24-Hour Economy Collaboration award. Forster Tuncurry Business Chamber was named Outstanding Local Chamber, with the Camden Haven and Wauchope chambers and Business Port Macquarie among the regional finalists in the category. The winners will now represent the Mid North Coast at the 2026 State Business Awards in Sydney on October 30, competing against regional and metropolitan finalists from across New South Wales.
Laurieton Rotary grant no hollow gesture By Rachael THORPE EARLIER this year, the Rotary Club of Laurieton made a $500 donation to citizen scientists Nette and Andy McCoubrie, founders of The Hollow Project in Dunbogan. The money went towards the purchase of a wildlife camera used to monitor animal activity at 40 tree hollows. “The club is supporting important local research and conservation work,” Ms McCoubrie said. “Each contribution enables us to gather data that will guide future habitat restoration efforts.” The Rotary Club of Laurieton has been active in the Camden Haven district for the past 60 years, with its members embodying their mission of ‘Service above Self’. Twice a year, the club holds a
book sale, with the funds raised dispersed to a diverse range of community projects. Earlier this month, club president Caroline Hall announced a new round of grants, with grants of up to $500 made to local not-for-profit organisations. “We distribute funding raised throughout the year to both local and international projects,” Ms Hall said. More than $18,500 was issued in 2025/26 to local organisations, including Camden Haven High School, Kendall Show, Laurieton Men’s Shed, Senior Citizens, Food Connect, Rotary Lodge, the SES, Marine Rescue, Westpac Helicopter, several RFS units, and Community @ 3. Unified zero tolerance policy gives licensees ‘real teeth’ while all your friends are out enjoying our local venues.” With 25 years of experience as a licensee, State Member for Port Macquarie, Rob Dwyer, praised the proactive cross-regional collaboration under the Liquor & Gaming NSW framework. “It is fantastic to see our local Liquor Accords taking the initiative to collaborate across borders and strengthen local safety,” Mr Dwyer said. “The NSW Liquor Accord program, created and supported by Liquor & Gaming NSW, is designed to empower local operators to solve local problems. LICENSED venues across the Mid North Coast Police District have joined forces to bar troublesome patrons from every licenced venue across the region under an expanded multi-venue barring policy.
The unified initiative sees the Nambucca, Hastings, and Macleay Liquor Accords working in direct partnership to ensure troublemakers barred in one town can no longer simply travel down the road to another venue. Mid North Coast Police District Commander, Superintendent Shane Cribb, welcomed the expanded accord network and reinforced police support for venue safety. “NSW Police has zero tolerance for violent, disorderly, or intimidating behaviour in our community,” Superintendent Cribb said. “Our priority is keeping licensed premises and the surrounding precincts safe for patrons, staff, and the wider public. This district-wide accord partnership gives licensees real teeth to hold offenders accountable, and we will actively enforce it.” Under the expanded policy, individuals can be barred from all participating venues across the Mid North Coast Police District for at least three months, and up to 10 years in severe cases.

In addition, minors caught attempting to enter venues with false IDs, purchasing alcohol, or stealing from retail bottle shops face barring for 12 months starting from their 18th birthday. A person can be refused entry or ejected from all district venues for: violent, threatening, or aggressive behaviour, antisocial or disorderly conduct, malicious damage, vandalism, or ongoing disturbances, repeated intoxication across multiple licensed premises, refusal to leave a venue when directed by staff or security, drug use, possession, or supply fake identification offences. Anyone who enters or attempts to enter a licensed venue while subject to a barring order commits an offence under the Liquor Act 2007 and may receive an on-the-spot fine of $550 or face court-imposed penalties of up to $5,500. Hastings Liquor Accord Chair Alistair Flower said licensees across the three accord areas are united in safeguarding both community members and hospitality staff. “While the vast majority of patrons do the right thing, there is unfortunately a minority who engage in unacceptable, anti-social behaviour,” Mr Flower said. “By linking our three accords across the entire Mid North Coast Police District, we are closing the gaps. If you get barred in Port Macquarie, Kempsey, or Nambucca, you are barred across the entire district. “Our venues are committed to providing safe, welcoming environments for families, locals, and visitors. “The message is clear: behave or be barred. You don’t want to be the one sitting at home
Nambucca unite as a single district network shows genuine leadership in keeping our community vibrant and safe.” Member for Oxley, Michael Kemp, whose electorate takes in Wauchope and the Macleay and Nambucca valleys, strongly endorsed the united front across regional communities. “Our local pubs and clubs are the heart of regional towns like Wauchope, Kempsey, and Macksville, and everyone deserves to feel safe when they walk through the doors,” Mr Kemp said. “Closing the loophole so troublemakers can't simply skip between towns is common sense.”

Meet the faces behind your news Chris Karas
Contributing Sports Reporter CHRIS Karas has reached a 50-year milestone in sports journalism. In that time he has covered sport ¬from grassroots to international level, including rugby league, cricket, Australian Rules, netball, golf, rugby, soccer, hockey, athletics, swimming, basketball, baseball, softball, paddling, rowing, surfing, water polo, squash, and gymnastics. Now, he’s about to cover the exploits Camden Haven athletes – of all abilities, ages, stages and sports – telling their stories in Camden Haven News Of The Area, your free weekly newspaper and online news outlet. Chris’ love of sport began on the field, not the sideline. “I was an active kid who played rugby league, cricket, tennis, rugby, golf and soccer growing up,” Chris recalled. “From the age of nine I was always writing school compositions with sporting themes, and was encouraged by my teachers to keep at it.” He lapped up every opportunity to speak with wellknown athletes. “My junior rugby league club, Glebe Police Boys, would play at half-time at Balmain Tigers matches at Leichhardt
Oval and we would sit outside the field of play,” Chris said. “As an eight-year-old I would walk up to Arthur Beetson and ask him questions. My teammates were horrified.” He began his journalism career in 1976 while still at school. “I soon developed a passion for sports writing,” he said. “From the age of 15, I was writing a sports column and articles for The Guardian newspaper.” As a junior, Chris represented Balmain in the Harold Matthews Cup, S G Ball Cup, Jersey Flegg Cup and NSWRL Under-23 competitions, playing alongside club greats Wayne Pearce and Steve Roach. He eventually chose to put sports journalism came first and he’s loved every minute of it, spending 36 years as Sports Editor of The Weekly Times newspaper in Ryde. “I also developed a strong passion for sports history and became an author in 2008,” Chris said. During league’s centenary year, I wrote my first book, ‘From Fraser to Farah - a History of The Balmain Junior League 1908-2008’.” He has written two other
sports history books - ‘Friends for Life: Centenary of Leichhardt Wanderers Junior Rugby League Club 1911-2011’; plus the ‘History of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club 19632003’. Chris covered the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and is the longserving historian of the Balmain Tigers Rugby League Club. He served over 30 years with the Ryde Sports Foundation and is a recipient of a NSW Premier's Award. Chris and his family moved north in 2020 and, today, Chris still enjoys writing about sporting exploits: in News Of The Area publications. “I’ve interviewed some of Australia’s greatest sporting
champions during my career,” Chris said. “These days, I enjoy recognising the talent of up-and-coming sportsmen and women at a local level.” Chris’s love of sport is hard-wired into his persona. As is the case for many in this post-COVID world, much of his interviewing takes place over the phone, so he can talk to anyone, anywhere. He would love to hear from sports clubs and individuals about any sportsperson with a story to tell, regardless of their age or the sport they play. Community @ 3 Chairman Theo Hazelgrove recently presented Hastings Chapter Chairman Scott Mingay with a Certificate of Appreciation, acknowledging the club’s many years of support for the organisation and its Mission
to the Homeless. The recognition follows another contribution from the Hastings Chapter, with proceeds from the club’s recent rally at Kendall donated to Community @ 3 to assist its work supporting
people experiencing homelessness and hardship. Mr Hazelgrove said the relationship between the two organisations had developed over many years, with the motorcycle club continuing to stand behind Community

‘Everyone did everything they possibly could’ to save Melissa FROM Page 1 personal. Earlier this year, their daughter-in-law Melissa Austin lost her life at South Beach after entering the water to help her son when he got into trouble near the rocks. Ms Austin was able to help save her son, but was swept into difficulty herself. The tragedy prompted the family to look at what rescue equipment was available at the beach and what could be done to save a life in the critical minutes

before emergency services arrived. Greg Bovis’ original idea was a simple one. “At first, all I wanted was a life ring,” he said. “You see them on rock platforms and beaches, and that was all I wanted - just something people could use.” What followed was several months of inquiries as the family worked through questions around land ownership, responsibility and the approvals needed to install equipment at the location. After initially approaching

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, they established that the site was Crown land. They then contacted the office of Port Macquarie MP Robert Dwyer, with staffer Chris Bawn helping the family navigate the process of liaising with the relevant authorities. “Robert and Chris really helped to get it moving,” Mr Bovis said. “They got in touch with the relevant people, and soon we knew it could be done.” With the necessary approvals, a surf rescue tube unit was sourced for South

Beach. Mr Dwyer and Mr Bawn also assisted with the installation, joining the family to dig the hole, mix concrete and secure the life-saving equipment in place. For the Bovis’s, acknowledging those who responded on the day Melissa died is an important part of the story. Police, paramedics, Surf Life Saving Club members and members of the public rushed to assist, with emergency personnel working to save their daughter-in-law. “They were unbelievable,” Greg Bovis said. “The police, paramedics, lifesavers and members of the public - everyone did everything they possibly could. “We just want them to know how grateful we are.” Members of the Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club were among those who responded, travelling to South Beach to assist. The new rescue tube is designed to provide beachgoers with a flotation aid during an emergency. While it cannot replace trained lifesavers or

emergency services, having it on hand offers another option when a swimmer is in difficulty. The South Beach installation has also become part of a broader effort to improve access to rescue equipment at unpatrolled coastal locations. The couple have been working with Jeremy, a Bonny Hills club member, who has been independently developing protective housings for rescue tubes at several locations.
“He’s been absolutely fantastic,” Greg said. “He’s taken it on himself to make housings to get rescue tubes into places where they could be needed.” The family has also contributed $300 towards the purchase of another two rescue tubes, with hopes of seeing additional equipment installed at other beaches and popular coastal locations. For the Bovis family, the newly installed rescue tube now carries a purpose, as well as Melissa Austin’s memory.

Firefighting training keeps Marine Rescue crew ready By Rachael THORPE ACROSS NSW 46 Marine Rescue units comprising 3,500 volunteers are gearing up for their busiest time of year as the weather warms up and boat owners take to coastal waters. To ensure preparedness, this month 10 members of the crew at Marine Rescue Camden Haven refreshed their firefighting skills in a three-hour workshop at their Laurieton base. The practice included using fire extinguishers and fire blankets, focussing on the risks of firefighting onboard a vessel or at the base, with Mitch Harvey, Marine Rescue’s Zone Training Manager, running the session. Marine Rescue Camden Haven Deputy Unit Commander, Rick Stone,
said the training reflected the reality of working in small teams, often far from immediate help. “Once we leave the wharf, there is no fire brigade to call,” Mr Stone said. “If a fire breaks out on board, our crew has to deal with it quickly and safely, while looking after everyone on the vessel. “We often work as a small, self-reliant team. “Every crew member needs to know what to do, and trust that the person beside them does too. “Practising these skills regularly means we act fast when it counts.” Across NSW over winter, Marine Rescue units completed 273 search and rescue missions in August, the busiest August on record. This included 97 emergency
responses and 538 people returned safely to shore. Engine, battery and fuel problems accounted for 55 per cent of August responses statewide, and these faults carry the potential to cause an onboard fire.. Regular servicing of engines and maintenance of fuel lines reduces the risk of an onboard fire. Transport NSW Maritime rules mandate that a fire extinguisher must be carried on all vessels that include any of the following: any fuel storage, including a petrol tank for a line pull boat or winch motor; an electric-start engine or electric motor; and a battery or gas installation. “We want everyone to enjoy the water this spring,” Mr Stone said. “Check your engine, fuel and battery before you

TooLa takes over Port Macquarie music scene By Shalise LEESFIELD NEXT weekend, one of Port Macquarie’s most iconic laneways will become the stage for a nationally recognised local rapper. Hideaway Festival will take over Phillips Lane and transform it into a colourful, electrifying festival showcasing local artists that is free for all to attend. Sixteen-year-old First Nations rapper Tyler Saunders (known professionally as TooLa) will be a highlight of the event, travelling from Taree to perform for a Port Macquarie audience. His musical journey began with busking on the street at just three years old. Today he is working on his

very own EP titled Reborn, from which he will perform the first unreleased track at Hideaway Festival. “I would describe my music as unique. It’s a sound that’s always been there, but no one’s found it like I have,” Saunders said. Despite his age, the young artist already has notable achievements that include reaching 10,000 streams on his song ‘Float’, and winning the Triple J 2026 Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative. “TooLa is a world I’ve built around myself, and it means so much to me because it’s a space where I get to express my feelings and not feel judged,” Saunders said. While influenced by American rappers, Saunders believes his real inspiration
is his family, culture and the fact he has spent his entire life indulging in music. His performance will mark a milestone in his career, which is his first ever live show. However, his music ambition does not stop there. “My goals for music over the next couple of years are to influence everyone and take Australia and the world by storm, and prove to young Aboriginal kids that are just like me that you can do it,” Saunders said. “I want to set an example.” The Hideaway Festival will take place on the afternoon of 3 October. Saunders said, “it’s time to put on an insane show. Put your hands up, jump a little, go crazy, ’cause that’s what I’ll be doing.”

Country drivers deserve more support, says Dwyer MEMBER for Port Macquarie Robert Dwyer MP has condemned the NSW Labor Government for not doing enough to support regional drivers. Mr Dwyer welcomed the recently announced $100 rego discount, saying it was a NSW Liberals commitment adopted by the state government. “Any cost-of-living relief is welcome," Mr Dwyer said. “I'm glad local families will see $100 back in their pockets when their rego comes due. “Cost of living is hurting people
right across our region, and every bit of relief counts.” However, for regional drivers, the cost of getting from A to B goes far beyond rego, Mr Dwyer said. “We rely on our vehicles far more than city residents,” he said. “The state of our roads, the distances we travel, and the lack of public transport alternatives mean every dollar counts.” The discount applies automatically when a vehicle is due for registration, when a new vehicle is registered in NSW, or
when a vehicle is re-registered after previously being unregistered. Drivers whose rego was due in July or August will receive the discount when their registration is renewed in 2027. Motorcyclists will also receive an $80 discount. The saving applies automatically, with no action required from eligible riders. Drivers can manage their registration details through their MyServiceNSW account or the Service NSW app.

fish. Tailor fishing has been fairly average, although Crowdy Head has been one of the more productive locations. For those chasing luderick, Bonny Hills is worth a look, particularly around the washes where floating cabbage weed can produce some good fish. Beach anglers have been finding some nice bream, along with the occasional solid salmon. In the river, anglers fishing the breakwalls around the daytime high tides have been catching some quality flathead and bream. As the weather starts to warm up, it is worth keeping an eye on Lake Cathie, as we may soon start to see school prawns becoming more active. With Sunday’s full moon, it could be worth heading down late next week to see what is starting to show up around the lake. In the Hastings River, luderick catches have slowed down, but persistent anglers can still find success around

the breakwalls using green weed and weed flies. Bream numbers have been a little lower, although fishing has been more productive further upstream, particularly for anglers casting lures. Flathead numbers are starting to increase, with fish being caught throughout much of the Hastings
River, making it well worth exploring different areas as the season progresses. Offshore fishing has been relatively quiet this week due to rough weather, but last weekend a few yellowfin tuna were caught off South West Rocks, which is an encouraging sign as we head towards the warmer months. We are also starting to see a good push of current from the East Australian Current (EAC), which should bring more pelagic species down the coast as we move into the summer season. With conditions expected to improve, there should be
some good opportunities for snapper throughout the week. Lighthouse Beach would be one area worth trying, particularly in 30–40 metres of water. Soft plastics and frozen pilchards should both be worth a try. Further offshore, Trag Rock should be worth a look for pearl perch and kingfish as conditions settle. For those simply looking to put a feed in the boat, the flathead grounds in around 50 metres of water are always worth a drop and can provide a reliable feed when the offshore conditions allow.

Young weightlifter sets sights on Games By Rachael THORPE CAMDEN Haven weightlifting sensation Madeline Letchford is just 16 years old, but she’s already got her sights set on qualifying for Australia’s Commonwealth Games team. She recently attended the National Junior Weightlifting Championships in Melbourne, lining up against competitors from around the country. The Year 10 St Joseph’s Regional College student competed in the 69kg 16–17-year-old Junior Division and took home a
weight requires Madeline to follow a high-protein and complex carbohydrate diet in the lead-up, with all competitors weighed on the morning of the event. To reach the National competition, she had to lift 116kg in two separate qualifying heats. Competing against nine other girls, she took third place with a 125kg lift. With a daily training regime encompassing lifting, strength work and CrossFit classes, Madeline is ranked in the top 400 teenage athletes worldwide in the 2026 CrossFit Games.

When a promise bears fruit CLIVE began working at Rosegum Vineyard as a young man. Owned by Reginald and Dorothy, Rosegum became the centre of his working life. He tended the vines, repaired fences and worked each harvest for modest wages and accommodation. Over time, Clive came to know Rosegum intimately. He knew which vines struggled through dry summers, which machinery required more persuasion than maintenance, and had developed strong opinions about grapes that nobody had asked for. Reginald often assured Clive that one day Rosegum would be his. When Reginald became ill, he explained that the vineyard would first pass to Dorothy and then to Clive. After Reginald died, Dorothy confirmed their agreement that Rosegum would eventually be his. Several years later, Clive was offered a management position at a larger vineyard with substantially higher pay and opportunities for advancement. Clive mentioned the offer to Dorothy over dinner. She dismissed the idea, telling him, “Oh, don’t be ridiculous, Clive. Rosegum is your home.” Clive laughed, agreed and declined the offer. For 23 years, Clive remained at Rosegum on a modest income. He did not pursue another career, purchase a home or accumulate substantial superannuation. Rosegum was no longer simply where Clive worked. It was the future around which he had arranged his life. Despite her promise, Dorothy made several Wills which did not leave Rosegum to Clive. When Dorothy died, her final Will left the vineyard to her daughter, Caroline. Clive instead received just $300,000. Caroline argued that Clive had been paid, lived rent-free and received a substantial gift under the Will. Clive brought a claim based on proprietary estoppel. The Court found that Clive had relied upon Dorothy’s promise to his detriment, remaining at Rosegum for decades while foregoing more lucrative employment and opportunities elsewhere. NSW Govt must stop attacking recreational fishing DEAR News Of The Area, THE NSW Government’s proposed changes to bag limits for snapper and yellowtail kingfish should concern every recreational fisher in this state. Once again, recreational fishers appear to be the easiest target when the Government wants to be seen to be doing something about fish stocks. But where is the evidence that simply cutting bag limits will deliver the outcomes being claimed? There is an even bigger question the Government needs to answer: are our current legal size limits actually allowing these fish to reach breeding size before they can legally be taken? The current NSW minimum legal length for snapper is just 30cm. Yet NSW Fisheries’ own stock assessment states that snapper reach maturity at around 26cm in northern NSW and 32cm in southern NSW. That means the legal size in southern NSW can actually be below the size at which 50 per cent of snapper have reached maturity. (NSW Department of Primary Industries). The situation with yellowtail kingfish is even more concerning. The current minimum legal length is 65cm, while NSW Fisheries research estimates that 50 per cent of female kingfish reach maturity at approximately 83cm fork length. Kingfish can legally be removed from the fishery well before a significant proportion of females have reached maturity. (NSW Department of Primary Industries). NSW Fisheries itself says minimum size limits are a management tool designed to ensure that most fish have the opportunity to grow to breeding size and spawn at least once before being caught. (NSW Department of Primary Industries). So before the Government reaches for another bag-limit reduction on recreational fishers, perhaps it should explain why the existing management

settings allow fish to be legally harvested before many have even had the opportunity to breed. This raises serious questions about whether the Government is actually managing the resource properly or simply continuing to place restrictions on recreational fishers because they are an easy political target. Recreational fishers are not the enemy of our fisheries. They are among the biggest stakeholders in NSW’s marine environment and contribute enormously to coastal communities through spending on boats, fuel, tackle, bait, accommodation, tourism and local businesses. They also pay a recreational fishing fee that is supposed to support recreational fishing and fisheries management. If fish stocks are genuinely under pressure, then the Government should provide the public with the full science behind its decisions, identify all sources of fishing mortality, and demonstrate that every sector is being treated fairly. Simply reducing the recreational bag limit does not address the fundamental question of whether the fishery is being managed for maximum sustainability. We need a fisheries department that understands the biology of these species, listens to the people who spend their weekends on the water, and manages fish stocks based on sound science rather than political convenience. Recreational fishers are willing to support sensible, evidencebased conservation measures. What they will not accept is being continually singled out while fundamental questions about fisheries management remain unanswered. Stop attacking recreational fishing. PEOPLE with dogs often treat them like small humans but there are a number of issues with letting dogs lick the leftovers from dishes. Perhaps you could reframe the problem by suggesting that you are worried about the potential health risks for the dog. There are numerous human foods that are problematic for dogs including avocado, chocolate, grapes, macadamia nuts and onion. Foods with too much salt are also an issue, so the safest bet is to feed the dog good quality pet food that contains all the essential vitamins and minerals in their own bowl. A further issue is that a dog that
gets to lick human dishes will tend to hover around the dinner table waiting for this special post-meal treat. This encourages antisocial behaviour and can make guests feel exceedingly uncomfortable. Something along the lines of, 'Roger is a beautiful Doberman, but I feel a bit violated when his nose is resting in my crotch while he waits for leftovers,' may do the trick, even with the most ignorant pet owners. There is also, as you state, the issue of hygiene. Now I don't know about your friend's dog, but just this week I have watched my own dog dig up and chew on a month-old bone, lick my other dog's ears, lick his own - how do I say this politely? - nether regions, devour a used tissue, and treat the kitty litter tray in the laundry like an all-you-caneat buffet (promptly vomiting and then eating that too). Now that is not a tongue that I would like to come in contact with my dinner plate, even if it was followed by the 'sanitise cycle' on the dishwasher. Perhaps, if this behaviour continues, you could bring your own plate as a not-so-subtle indication of your unwillingness to accept this behaviour. I don't think there is any sensitive way to broach the subject, and whatever you try will no doubt insult your friend in much the same way that her behaviour has offended you. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
Ferries must cost a fortune DEAR News Of The Area, MOST places around NSW and Australia ditched and retired the old local car ferries 60 years ago and built bridges across the river. Ever heard of Forster to Tuncurry? Why doesn’t Port Macquarie have a modern, thriving town where many people can live on the North Shore? It’s room for the town to grow. Why isn’t there a bridge from Fern Bank Creek to Shoreline Drive, and a proper bitumen road up Maria River Road past Limeburners Creek National Park connecting with the Crescent Head and Kempsey areas?
And, before you ask, for the number of times a boat goes up the river, it can be an opening bridge or one like Stockton. The operation of two ferries, not just one, is archaic and must cost the Port Macquarie Hastings Council a fortune. It’s like the Hospital Roundabout. Go to Melbourne and Sydney and see the massive infrastructure and flyovers those cities have! That’s what we need, plus a raised road near there going through the floodplain, linking to the new bridge across the river. Just like the Kempsey Bypass. Long overdue. Election battleground a super situation NEW battle lines are being drawn for the next Federal Election, which is due by 20 May, 2028. Many of us might be thinking that 20 months is too early to offer policies for scrutiny, but the Government seems to be desperate to change direction away from its present economic malaise. Surprisingly they have chosen superannuation as their fighting point, a policy that lost Bill Shorten an election in which the outsider Scott Morrison gained the win. This was due to present Treasurer Dr Jim Chalmers’ attack on the assets of the retired community, plus everyone else who was saving for super. The argument for change is interesting, given the fact that former ALP PM Paul Keating set up a really successful scheme, which included retaining Franking Credits on investment income when held in super. These became a cash flow bonanza for the fund and its beneficiary. Superannuation is all about saving income during your working life in order to provide for greater income opportunity when retired. It also saves the government from needing to provide pensions for those who save during their working life, plus offers tax relief as an incentive to attract you into super. The trick with super has always been the need to remain alive until you reach the required age where you can retire and enjoy a taxeffective income in your remaining years. The other side of super is the argument that these savings are your money and there are people who have specific needs for their money earlier than retirement. They may need to buy their first home, for example, or encounter medical issues that need immediate and substantial financial expenditure. I’m not taking sides in this debate as that will probably be decided at the next federal election and, of course, the desirability of having your super in place to grow until retirement needs to be matched against other needs that may be of immediate benefit to that particular super investor. The one area not being discussed is that of the tax benefits that super savers have received while the protective treatment of super is in place. Should those needing to cash in their super early then be required to refund their tax savings to the government, who will be required to pay that person a pension at their eventual retirement? No easy answers in this debate.

Robots will be first to colonise the moon ELON Musk has built a career on chasing ideas many people once thought impossible. Now the SpaceX founder has revealed perhaps his boldest dream yet: creating permanent human settlements on the Moon and, eventually, Mars. The first steps could begin before the end of 2026. But instead of astronauts leading the way, Musk wants fleets of intelligent humanoid robots to go first. Their job will be to unload cargo, build habitats, install power systems and prepare everything needed for people to live safely in space before the first settlers arrive. In recent months, Musk has shifted more attention toward the Moon as the ideal starting point. At just three days from Earth, it is far easier and safer to reach than Mars, which lies around six months away. Engineers can test new technologies, solve problems
and learn how to build off-world communities much closer to home. Musk believes a permanent lunar settlement could become reality within the next decade. Mars would follow later, with cargo missions beginning within seven years and self-sustaining cities potentially appearing sometime between 2045 and 2055. A project of this scale needs far more than rockets. It also requires a communications network capable of linking Earth, the Moon and Mars. SpaceX has proposed building an enormous constellation of about 100,000 satellites to provide high-speed communications while supplying the computing power future artificial intelligence systems will need. Space engineer Jim Cantrell believes this satellite network is the key to the entire plan. Rather than carrying powerful computers inside every robot, most of the heavy processing could take place remotely through the satellite system, allowing the robots to work together far more efficiently. SpaceX continues expanding its Starlink satellite network, however Musk says an even larger spacecraft than Starship may eventually be required to transport the huge amounts of machinery needed to build entire settlements. Transporting all that equipment remains one of the greatest challenges. Although Starship has achieved major milestones, it still needs to prove orbital refuelling—a vital technology for carrying massive cargo loads on long journeys to the Moon and Mars.
Once that happens, Musk hopes launches could eventually take place every few days. The Moon offers another important advantage. If something goes wrong, replacement equipment or rescue crews can arrive within days instead of months. Many of the technologies developed there—including habitat construction, water extraction, power generation and life-support systems—will also be needed on Mars. Much of this work is expected to be carried out by Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots. Unlike people, they need no food, water or oxygen. Powered mainly by solar energy, they can work day and night in dangerous environments without risking human lives. Creating a permanent settlement will still be enormously difficult. Future colonists will need reliable supplies of electricity, oxygen, water and fuel, along with habitats that protect them from

South West Rocks responded to level the scores, setting up a tense finish. With around five minutes

remaining, Camden Haven found the back of the net again through an attacking combination involving Josh Byrne and Matty Hayes. The Silverbacks then held off a determined South West Rocks side through the closing stages to secure the grand final victory. “It was a back and forth, tight game,” James said. “South West Rocks never gave up and pushed us all the way. We knew we had to dig deep. “Big credit to South West Rocks. They fought right until the end.” The victory came despite the Silverbacks having to overcome several setbacks in the lead-up to the decider. Captain Dave Bruer was unable to take the field after travelling to Fiji for a wedding, leaving vice captain Nathan Monaghan to lead the side.

Chris Guliano also suffered a broken ankle at training on the Wednesday before the grand final, while Adam Cohen suffered a broken leg several weeks earlier. Despite those challenges, James said the group remained focused on what they had worked towards throughout the season. “We had the trophy in sight and the blinkers on,” he said. “As a coach with a mixed age group, I had to make sure the young blokes had confidence and trusted us older fellas, and the older fellas knew we had a job to do. So we went and did it.” The Silverbacks squad included 27 players ranging in age from 18 to 56, something James said made the team's success particularly rewarding. “Some blokes met for the first time this year and will now have a lifetime bond,” he said. “I’m most proud of having 27 players and making them all gel and be on the same wavelength all year, from 18-year-olds to 56-year-olds. “They turned up every week and put in. I couldn’t do it if they weren’t all a bunch of great blokes and legends.” James also paid tribute to captain Dave Bruer and vice captain Nathan Monaghan for their contribution throughout the campaign. “I couldn’t have run this ship without all the boys, but a special mention has to go to Dave and Nathan,” he said.

I’m pretty sure they’re glad that part of the season is over.” While James emphasised that the championship was built on a complete team effort, he highlighted several individual performances, including grand final man-of-thematch Josh Byrne and midfielder Alex Retamal, who he described as an inspiration throughout the season. “We have good players in our team, but at the end of the day this is a team game and you can’t shine if you don’t perform as a team,” he said. For James, one of the lasting memories of the season will be the support the Silverbacks received from the Camden Haven community. He said the crowd had played an important role in getting the side through its knockout semi-final the previous week before turning out again for the grand final. “The atmosphere was goosebumps material,” James said. “This means everything to our small town. I’m still getting text messages from numbers I don’t know saying, ‘The Redbacks are back, baby’. “I had people crying and running onto the field when the full-time whistle went. It’s one weekend I’ll never forget.” With the trophy secured and a three-year pursuit finally complete, attention will eventually turn to defending the title. “Bring on 2027,” James said.

In a new competition show filmed on location at an actual Sydney school, Matt Okine, Becky Lucas, Dave Hughes, Nina Oyama, Luke McGregor and Bron Lewis pair up to take on a variety of challenges and assessments related to school subjects. THE Camden Haven Redbacks’ ‘Silverbacks’ have capped off a remarkable season by claiming the Men’s Senior A competition premiership and grandfinal victory, marking the culmination of a three-year journey for the side. Coach James Beard said the win meant an enormous amount to the players, supporters and wider Camden Haven community. “Winning this competition means everything to us boys,” James said. “We started three years ago and have come one step closer every year, and this year we won, taking out the premiership and winning the grand final. “At the start there would have been 15 people
