Pharmacy staff join fight against breast cancer THE staff of North Haven Pharmacy have put their feet to work and stepped up to raise money for breast cancer research. The pharmacy’s ‘Pink Pill Posse’ of Leeanne Swan, Kim Mozeley, Joanne Hill and Nicole Morrison took the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Step Up to Breast Cancer challenge, with a goal of each walking 56km during August. But, the women went above and beyond, walking almost 300km to smash their fundraising goal of $4000 in the process through in-store and online donations. “We’ve done breast cancer challenges in the past,” Ms Swan said. “From customers who come into the pharmacy,

River foreshore clean-up needs helping hands THE Camden Haven River foreshore will get a Spring CleanUp on 26 September. From 9am, Hastings Landcare group members and local volunteers will collect litter along the pathway from Laurieton’s Marine Rescue Shed, covering the

area south to the services club and north to the North Haven Bridge. The local landcare group’s clean-ups usually attract 2025 volunteers, but anyone is welcome to take part. “It’s a very satisfying way to

have a walk in the sunshine for a couple of hours and meet other locals,” said Hastings Landcare Volunteer Support, Robyn Camozzato. “Most people follow the path and its surrounds, but some will pull on gumboots to collect rubbish washed up along the river’s edge.” Gloves and bags are supplied

Local refugee group helps build new lives By Rachael THORPE UNIVERSITY lecturer Tin Hta Nu fled Burma [Myanmar] in 1990. Her outspoken political beliefs made her a target for the military government and she feared for her life. In the years since she has made the Camden Haven her home, but has never forgotten the

country of her birth. “As an academic I have loved the freedom I have had to teach in this country,” Ms Hta Nu said. “I am involved with many local organisations, including Community at 3 and our community gardens. “I spend a lot of time baking and growing vegetables, which I enjoy sharing around.”

Almost 20 years ago she cofounded the Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group with the purpose of helping those fleeing the country’s civil war to Australia; as well as assisting the burgeoning humanitarian crisis on the border with Thailand. Group president Janette Jones estimates that globally 117.8 million people had been displaced, often due to war. “The 30 members of our group have assisted 20 refugees, half of them children, to relocate to the Mid North Coast region over the last 10 years. “With our support they are all now citizens and permanent residents with secure employment.” The group supports organizations including the Refugee Council of Australia, the Asylum, Seeker Resource Centre and Rural Australians for Refugees to lobby Governments and politicians, including local members, to support asylum seekers and refugees. Pets bring comfort and connection By Rachael THORPE

EACH week Always Able Pet Boarding and Doggy Daycare at Kew opens its doors to the community to allow people to come and socialise with the furry daycare clients. Owners Michelle and Atti Nohotima have a background in the disability space and are passionate about the therapeutic benefits of pets. Their program is free to participants, pets and their owners. “Pet owners need to give permission for their pets to participate, and a lot of our guests attend with a support person,” said Mrs Nohotima. “It is very popular with

elderly people who can no longer have a pet due to their living environment, and it’s great for the animals to have one-on-one attention, particularly if they are missing their families.” Twelve-year-old Leo Hewitt attends weekly, and feels a connection to the resident cats. “I love cats, mainly because they are calm, and I really like coming here before school every Tuesday,” he said. His parents refer to his visits as cat therapy and are grateful to have this opportunity available to their son. The Nohotimas have

a group home onsite and prioritise employing people with disabilities where possible. Participants in the program groom and play with the animals. Research indicates that interaction with pets helps regulate the nervous system, reduces stress hormones, and provides safe, unconditional companionship following trauma. Vere and Garry Gray regularly board their cats at Always Able and are delighted at the attention they receive. “Our cats love coming here and enjoy the attention they get from all of the visitors,” Mr Gray said.

AS a child growing up in New Zealand I was an avid reader and dreamed of being a writer, but I lacked confidence. At university I earned a degree in languages and history before becoming a mum of three. With no clear career path I ended up working in construction administration, which I still do today. At 55 years old my children are all adults and my husband and I moved to the area two years ago so that he could enjoy retirement. I wanted to find ways to get involved in my local community, which I have done by joining several different organisations and groups. I'm passionate about words and hyper-local news, so writing for News Of The Area is a perfect fit. It allows me to share and amplify news of the people and stories around me. Some weeks I write nine stories, others only one. I live with a spinal cord injury and use a wheelchair full-ime, so I mostly interview people over the phone. I have met a diverse range of people during the past 12 months of writing and really appreciate the connections I have forged. I believe local newspapers have the power to unite communities.

THIS week marked R U OK? Day - our annual reminder of the importance of checking in, reaching out, and talking openly about life's ups and downs. While research shows that nine out of every 10 Australians are aware of the R U OK? movement, not everyone feels confident to reach out when someone is on their mind. This year, the focus of R U OK? is helping people build that confidence. "A conversation doesn't need to be perfect," said R U OK? CEO Lachlan Searle. "You don't need to have all the answers. "Often, simply taking the time to ask and listen can make a meaningful difference and show

25 years of faith and community By Rachael THORPE FOR the past 25 years, Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church has been a fixture in Lakewood and the wider Camden Haven community. The church was officially opened on 9 September 2001 by the Bishop of Newcastle and well-known local resident Nancy Dykes. Rector, the Reverend Geoff Piggott, led the community from 1996-2010 and oversaw the move from Holy Trinity Church in Laurieton to the new premises. Church members joined together to acquire land with well-laid plans for future growth of the congregation. Current rector Nathan Killick arrived in Camden Haven with his family 15 years ago.

“One of the great joys of the past 25 years has been seeing children and teenagers grow up through the church and then become leaders themselves “Today, more than 40 young people regularly gather at Centre Youth on Friday evenings for friendship, fun, food and an opportunity to explore the Christian faith.” Initially there were two Sunday morning services and a thriving Sunday School. An evening congregation followed, along with Centre Youth on Friday nights for young people from Years 6 to 12. Playtime began in May 2008 with eight women, nine children and a simple desire to provide a welcoming place for local families. Eighteen years later it is still going strong, meeting every Monday during

WHEN 29-year-old performance poet Baylee Forbes relocated from the Gold Coast to Lake Cathie earlier this year, she was in search of cultural connections. The new mum values spending time with other creative women. “I love seeing women connect in creative spaces,” she said. “I feel like we have a biological need to create, and there is a simple joy to be found being in a creative space.” Setting up a women’s writing circle was a natural fit for someone who has spent a lifetime journalling,

with the challenges she has experienced guiding her writing. After posting on several local Facebook groups, Ms Forbes was delighted to receive extensive interest in the project from locals. Currently 25 women across a wide demographic are keen to participate. “The circle is designed to

support the writing process,” Ms Forbes said. “I also hope to gather enough women to have other regular artistic events.” Based on feedback, the group will commence with a 90-minute session on a weekday morning, with another event on a Saturday or Sunday. Ms Forbes believes

Call out for artists living with disability

ARTISTS and makers living with disability in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region are invited to apply to participate in Ability in Action // Art Exhibition 2026. This exhibition has been made possible through funding from Arts Mid North Coast, and participation is completely free for selected artists. Rachael Thorpe, disability advocate and acting secretary of the Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce said: “We are looking for artists and makers across a range of creative mediums who would like the opportunity to showcase their work in a professional exhibition environment and share their creativity with the wider community. “We would love to see the incredible creativity and talent that exists within our local disability community and give artists the opportunity to have their work seen, celebrated and valued. “For me the main emphasis is that this event is centred around showcasing the talents

of disabled artists and I hope the public will be supportive of that. “We're also grateful to the Chamber for agreeing to auspice the grant.” Organisers are keen to support artists setting up the exhibition and encourage artists to have a formal or informal support person with them throughout the day. Artists are invited to attend a free workshop providing practical tips on marketing themselves and their art, as well as ideas for presenting and styling their work. The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 November at Laurieton United Services Club. There will be an opportunity for the community to have a conversation about disability in a “You Can’t Ask That” panel discussion featuring Rachael Thorpe and Noel Hiffernan OAM, both full-time wheelchair users. Building a dementia-friendly future for the Port Macquarie-Camden Haven region

By Shalise LEESFIELD NEXT week the Greater Port Macquarie Dementia Friendly Community Alliance (DFCA) will hold a community seminar to explore what those living in the region can do to reduce their risk of

dementia. The DFCA is a not-forprofit organisation that is striving to ensure the Port Macquarie–Hastings region is more inclusive and supportive, for those with dementia, and their carers. The seminar takes

place on 15 September at the Westport Club. General admission tickets are $25 each. The event is held during Dementia Awareness Month and falls just a week before Dementia Action Week from 21 to 27 September.

Marking another year of community service at its recent Annual General Meeting, outgoing President Bryan Gough reflected on an increased membership, growing participation in walking groups, and continued support for new cardiac patients at the hospital. During the past year, Heart Health NSW Inc. donated more than $7200 worth of equipment to the Port Macquarie Base Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and Coronary Care Unit. A plaque was unveiled outside the hospital’s Physiotherapy gym in February honouring former President Doug Short for his longstanding commitment to the organisation and community. Mid North Coast Local Health District Corporate

Relations Manager Tiffany Ball said the volunteers made an important contribution to patients and the wider community. “The Mid North Coast Local Health District is proud to support and acknowledge the outstanding contributions of Heart Health NSW volunteers,” Ms Ball said. Members also elected a new leadership team at the AGM, with Phil O’Donnell taking over as President. Mr O’Donnell thanked Mr Gough for his contribution as outgoing president and looks forward to building on the organisation’s work by growing Heart Health NSW in the year ahead. Local MPs say no to sex-selective abortion By Sharon JANE

CONTROVERSIAL Rhodes Scholar and Professor of Law at Adelaide University, Dr Joanna Howe, has recently attended Mid North Coast community forums during a campaign to ban sex-selective abortions in NSW. A Private Member's Bill introduced by MP John Ruddick to the NSW Legislative Council may go to a vote on 16 September and, if passed, must also face the Lower House for sex-selective abortions to be banned. As voting will be by conscience and not Party-led, Dr Howe aims to put conservative pressure on National Party MPs, including Gurmesh Singh and Michael Kemp, who voted for pro-choice on other bills in 2019 and 2025. Public meetings were held at Coffs Harbour on 6 August with

"...[M]y personal opinions are put aside to represent my constituents," Mr Kemp said. "I have not had one person say they support sex-selective abortions and I'll be voting against it.” Member for Coffs Harbour, Gurmesh Singh MP, also confirmed his opposition. "Like most people in NSW, I am completely against the practice of sex-selective abortion," Mr Singh said. Neither Mr Singh or Mr Kemp expect the bill to pass in its present form. "This bill would criminalise performing an abortion for sex selection, treat any practitioner who does so as having engaged

in professional misconduct, and void the professional indemnity insurance that would otherwise cover them," Mr Singh said. Dr Howe was asked how sexselective abortions were impacting the community. "Because of a landmark Edith Cowan University study, we now know that sex-selective abortion is happening in NSW, particularly affecting migrant communities, resulting in a distorted sex ratio at birth," Dr Howe said. "China and India have a dearth of girls, which affects community dynamics but also contributes to a notion that girls are less valuable than boys. “In Australia we believe that girls and boys are equal.” A rally to support the bill will be held in front of Parliament House in Sydney at 6pm on 15 September.

Woman allegedly kicks police during arrest A WOMAN has been charged with alleged domestic violence, traffic, and assault police offences following an incident in Port Macquarie. On Monday 7 September 2026, police attached to Mid North Coast Police District commenced an investigation into the alleged domestic violence assault of a man. Following inquiries, about 7pm on Tuesday 8 September, police attended a car park where they attempted to arrest a woman.

The woman allegedly drove from the location in her vehicle and police continued inquiries to locate her. About 10pm, officers attempted to stop the woman's vehicle at Sancrox. When the woman allegedly failed to stop as directed, a brief pursuit was initiated before being terminated due to safety concerns. Police sighted the vehicle at Lake Cathie a short time later, where officers were

forced to take evasive action after the woman allegedly accelerated towards a police vehicle. The woman's vehicle was located abandoned on the Oxley Highway a short time later, and the 18-year-old woman was arrested nearby. The woman allegedly resisted arrest and kicked an officer’s leg before she was taken to Port Macquarie Police Station. There she was charged with 13 offences,

The Posthumous Split HARRY and Wendy each have children from previous relationships. Two years after meeting each other, they commence cohabitation and are married shortly thereafter. After a 25-year marriage, involving various joint financial ventures, most of which failed, their relationship reaches an unfortunate and critical state and police attend their residence. The police take out apprehended violence orders (AVO) against Wendy on Harry's behalf. Wendy is charged with 'recklessly engaging in conduct that may have placed a person in danger of serious injury'. The charges are subsequently dropped. Wendy makes a cross-application for an AVO against Harry, and he moves out of the matrimonial home. Harry files an application under the Family Law Act, seeking property settlement orders, but sadly passes away from illness before the proceedings are resolved. Nonetheless, the Court proceeds to determine the matter and conducts the usual process, initially finding that it is 'just and equitable to make an order'. The Court identifies the asset pool and the parties' respective contributions. Wendy says that her contributions were more onerous due to Harry's alleged 'family violence, coercion and control'. The respective parties' children give evidence. However, the Court is loathe to place any great weight on Wendy's allegations, given that they were mostly uncorroborated and Harry is unable to be cross-examined. Contributions are assessed at 50/50. Finally, the Court examines Wendy's current and future circumstances and considers whether a further adjustment is necessary. The Court notes that Wendy is reliant on the aged pension and at the age of 70 years, she is expected to live for another 20 to 25 years. In contrast, Harry, of course, is identified as having no 'needs' on the basis that he has passed away. Ultimately, the Court concludes that Wendy should receive a 15 per cent adjustment for her current and future circumstances and on this basis is ordered to receive 65 per cent of the asset pool. Given that most of the assets were already in Wendy's name, she is ordered to pay Harry's estate just over $180,000. THE front-page story for many of the world’s news sources recently reported that Donald Trump had threatened to ‘bomb the shit’ out of US ally Oman if it got in the way of US efforts to broker a deal on the Straits of Hormuz. I wonder: how is that being received by the rest of the Gulf states? With the Arab world having been in conflict with western nations for more years than any of us can research into antiquity, why would you seek to bully, humiliate and embarrass one of the few recent friends you have left in that part of the world? Especially when they were perceived as not being on the side of Iran in the dispute about having the Gulf of Hormuz freely open to all ships trying to carry on business as normal, importantly by transporting gulf produced oil to the refineries of the world for fuel production. Yes, the world’s numberone sized big dog must be really frustrated that his demands and opinions on trying to return the Gulf to a free and open trade route have been rejected by the pint-sized family-run country is now having serious ramifications for the rest of the world whose economies are receding due to the ongoing price

Just because your supposed Arab friend, the state of Oman is trying to get on with its neighbour Iran by trying to find some common ground, which could suggest a way of solving the issue, why would you display these intemperate outbursts which can only inflame such a situation? Where does basic common sense fit into trying to solve such a difficult international conflict? There is an age-old saying that “you can’t legislate against stupidity”. I believe it fits this situation but can’t provide a worthwhile resolution with that type of response.

IT is quite common for people to pick up annoying habits and habitual phrases, often subconsciously. This is a recurrent issue with couples who spend a lot of time together. Before long they start mirroring each other with shared expressions and mannerisms. Certain words and sayings become fashionable over time too, until they are overused and then vanish into obscurity. I assume your new boyfriend is not expecting a response when he asks 'do you know what I mean?' It is what is known as a verbal filler and these overused expressions or words can become extremely irritating, though the person using them is often unaware. One way to draw attention to the overuse is to respond each time with: 'I think I know what you mean, but I can't be entirely sure. Could you perhaps clarify with a bit more detail?' Your response will become equally infuriating to your boyfriend and he may start to lessen the habit, if only to prevent the need to over-explain everything. An alternative option is to come up with your own annoying phrases. There

are so many to choose from. For starters, how about 'Yeah ... Nah.' This one became so popular that it ended up being used in a NSW road safety campaign to prevent people driving under the influence of alcohol. Another popular one is 'a hundred percent'. This is commonly used by influencers. In fact it has become so common that some are now saying 'a thousand percent' as a point of difference. 'It is what it is' is another expression that drives me absolutely spare (deliberate use of an idiom responding to an idiom). And then there's 'I did a thing', which is often accompanied by a brag post on social media attached to a photo of 'the thing': a new Lamborghini, climbing Mount Everest, making an outdoor spa from a wine barrel. You get the idea. Or how about: 'at the end of the day', which is stated at any time other than the end of the day to preempt a conclusive statement. Or 'to be honest,' used in far too many sentences, and another verbal filler. I think, Carly, if you start littering your sentences with any of these, perhaps your new man will start to realise the error of his ways. Alternatively, he may pick up on your annoying phrases and soon you'll be having conversations like: 'Hey Carly, something just doesn't feel quite right about this relationship, to be honest.' 'A hundred percent, Reece, I've been feeling that too. It's a shame, but it is what it is. Should we have a break?' 'Yeah, nah, it's too soon for that, Carly. And besides (Reece goes down on one knee and flips open a box and presents a one-carat diamond ring) I did a thing!' 'Oh Reece, you shouldn't have (thinks: you really shouldn't have). At the end of the day, I just don't think we're quite right for each other.' 'Carly, you've hurt me. I mean you've really hurt me. Do you know what I mean?' Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Proposed snapper and kingfish management strategies q

of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has released draft harvest strategies for both species. The aim is to rebuild fish stocks while still allowing people to enjoy fishing for them into the future. As someone involved in representing recreational fishers, I want to make it clear that I am approaching these proposals with an open mind. Rather than telling

anglers what they should think, my hope is that they will take the time to read the proposals, understand what is being suggested, and make their own submissions. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t ask some hard questions along the way.

head towards summer, we can expect the crabbing to continue improving. On the beaches, bream are being caught from protected corners, with anglers fishing the evening high tide having the best results. Along with bream, schools of mulloway have also been encountered, providing an exciting bonus for beach anglers. Offshore, game fishing anglers have been putting in the hard yards chasing pelagic species. Striped marlin have been a little quiet recently, but as we move further into September and conditions improve, we should start to see more consistent numbers of fish. Closer to shore, snapper remain active, although they are requiring a little more effort to find and tempt. Anchoring up and establishing a good berley trail is currently proving the most effective approach. In Camden Haven, the

southerly swell has kept rock fishing relatively subdued this week. Anglers targeting luderick with cabbage have still managed some decent catches, while the occasional drummer continues to be caught around the washes. As the swell eases, rock anglers should have a much better opportunity to get out and target these species over the coming week. Offshore, there remains a healthy population of snapper and pearl perch across many of the local reefs, along with plenty of nannygai and a few kingfish being found in the wider grounds. With conditions expected to settle, it looks like the coming weekend could provide a welcome return to the water. As always, check the latest local weather forecast and marine conditions before heading out on the Mid North Coast.

THE proposed East Coast Snapper Harvest Strategy is based on the latest information available about the health of the snapper

stock. The assessment estimates that the NSW snapper population was around 23 per cent of its original, unfished level in 2022. The proposed plan aims to first rebuild the stock to 30 per cent and eventually to 50 per cent of its unfished level. The draft strategy proposes a total fishing limit of 300 tonnes a year. For recreational fishers, the proposed starting rules include a bag and possession limit of three snapper per person. There would also be an allowance for one snapper over 70cm per person. The proposal also includes a split of the total catch, with 45 per cent allocated to recreational fishing and 55 per cent to commercial fishing. These numbers are likely to attract plenty of discussion among anglers. There are also questions around how recreational catches are estimated, how catch shares are worked out, and how things such as weather, breeding success and fish moving between different areas can affect stock numbers. The draft strategy acknowledges that improving the information available on recreational catches and better understanding snapper breeding and environmental conditions will be important in the future. FROM my perspective, the yellowtail kingfish harvest strategy is more concerning. The latest assessment estimates that the number of spawning-size female

kingfish in the NSW component of the eastern Australian stock was around 5.5 per cent of its unfished level at the beginning of 2025. It is important to understand that this 5.5 per cent figure is not an estimate that only 5.5 per cent of all kingfish remain. The latest assessment has changed the way the stock is measured, focusing specifically on spawning-size females, rather than simply looking at the total biomass of kingfish. This is also why the figure is quite different from the previous assessment, which estimated the stock at around 26 per cent in 2023. The two figures cannot be directly compared because the assessments are measuring the stock differently. The draft strategy proposes a total fishing limit of 120 tonnes a year, with the goal of rebuilding the stock to 30 per cent of its unfished level within 12 years, and eventually towards 50 per cent. The proposed recreational rules are much tighter than those for snapper. They include a onefish bag and possession limit, as well as a one-fish limit for boats and charter boats. For recreational anglers, that one-fish-per-boat proposal is a significant change. If several mates have travelled offshore together, sharing the cost of fuel, bait and tackle, being able to bring home just one kingfish between the entire boat could change whether targeting kingfish is worthwhile. The strategy also suggests that a seasonal catch-andrelease period could be

considered around the main spawning period, which is expected to be between November and January. For kingfish, the proposed catch is split evenly, with 50 per cent allocated to recreational fishing and 50 per cent to commercial fishing. There are also some areas where scientists say more information is needed. This includes understanding where large kingfish travel, how different fish populations mix between different areas, and where young kingfish are coming from. There is also a bigger picture to consider. Kingfish found along our coast are part of the same broader population as those found around New Zealand. Genetic studies and tagging have shown that fish move between the two countries. When you look at the number and average size of larger kingfish being caught in New Zealand, it raises an interesting question about what our own fishery could potentially look like if the stock was rebuilt to a higher level of larger, spawning fish. That doesn’t mean our local kingfish fishery is in poor shape. Anyone who spends time offshore on the Mid North Coast knows there are still plenty of quality fish being caught. But what we see locally is only one part of a much larger picture. For Part 2 of Kate’s analysis of proposed management strategies, see next week’s edition of the Camden Haven News Of The Area.

Thankfully, the forecast is looking much more promising, with conditions expected to ease by the weekend and continue improving into next week. This should open up some great opportunities to get back out on the water. The Hastings River has been producing impressive schools of mulloway further upstream, and as conditions settle during Spring, there should be some good opportunities for anglers targeting these fish around the breakwalls and deeper sections of the river. By Alison STEWART ONLY two weeks into the job, new Camden Haven Dragon Boat Club president Fiona Thorn was thrown in the deep end, figuratively speaking. Her first major task was to see her club host its annual regatta, only the third in recent history. It’s a major undertaking for even the most experienced president, but the club certainly has the winning formula. With a genuinely unique venue, 75-plus dedicated volunteers and perfect weekend weather, the regatta continues to go from strength to strength. “Every year the club learns more,” Ms Thorn said. “There’s no doubt it’s a lot of hard work, but it’s also a lot of fun, and the feedback from visiting paddlers is so inspiring. “We all find it so rewarding, being part of a wonderful club that hosts such a successful event.”
