ANNA Bay’s Carmel Northwood has been named as Port Stephens Woman of the Year. Kate Washington, MP, presented Carmel with the NSW Government award at a ceremony on Friday. Carmel is the President of Port Stephens Koalas and dedicates endless hours to caring and saving koalas from extinction. Since joining the organisation in 2010, Carmel has worked with Port Stephens Council to regenerate koala food corridors as well as representing Port Stephens Koalas at the NSW Wildlife Council. Carmel is also involved in a lot of the administration, working as a koala educator as well as helping to progress
the plans for a local koala hospital. This week Carmel will attend the NSW Local Woman of the Year Award with Kate Washington for the next round. Kate Washington told News Of The Area: “Carmel shows so much dedication to the job of saving Port Stephens’ koalas.” Kate also spoke of how Carmel and the team’s work is amazing in the effort, care and kindness they show. The public’s awareness and concern of the koala’s plight has grown immensely in recent years. In the past five years, koala numbers have dropped from 1200 to 200 – an enormous fall. The work is often heartbreaking as not all the

Resources Co-ordinator for the Council, who works with Carmel on the Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management, told News Of The Area: “Huge congratulations to Carmel.
She is inspirational to the staff at the Council and it is a pleasure to work with her.” Councillor Geoff Dingle described how he was passionate about
preserving koala habitat. He also thanked the eyes and ears of the community who report such activities as illegal chopping down of trees. Needless to say that
Carmel’s work is very much appreciated by the local community so that generations to come will be able to see these wonderful animals in the wild.
Who Cares for the Carers?

SOME carers in Port Stephens have been stunned to learn that they can no longer access the Mental Health Carer Respite Support Programme, a Department of Social Services initiative. Due to the roll-out of the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) in the Port Stephens area, from July 2016, funds for the Mental Health Carer Respite Programme have been withdrawn if the person they care for has a NDIS plan. The reasoning is that the person being cared for will now be able to access more services and community supports, therefore giving carers a break.
Carers are still able to access the Carer Line on 1800 242 636 and some referral pathways, including counselling. News Of The Area spoke with various carers in the area and the general reaction was one of disbelief. Carers felt that even if the person they care for goes out for a couple of hours, they are still there caring at all other times. Caring is so much more than physical care and is about phone calls, emails, letters, form filling, research and attending appointments too. The role is demanding and can be draining, with poor health, depression and high stress levels being some
of the documented conditions faced by some carers. Locally, Carers NSW hosted a cinema outing, preceded by coffee and cake, once a month in Nelson Bay which was very popular and available to all carers. They also hosted other events such as a cruise around Newcastle harbour and family cinema trips in Newcastle. These have now been withdrawn for those who care for someone with a NDIS plan. This is not a decision made by the organisation, who has always been very supportive locally, but is due to wider legislation. Judy Merrett, whose son Dylan has autism, told News Of The Area, “It can be isolating looking after
someone 24/7 and the carers’ trips gave you a break once a month and at other times.” Carers often have diminished incomes due to their caring responsibilities

Despite experiencing an education marked by bullying and ostracism, John realised at age 10, when he was on stage dressed as Humpty Dumpty, that he had discovered his life’s ambition. “I knew I wanted to be on stage for the rest of my life.” “I actually wanted to be a stand-up comedian, but I can’t stand up,” he deadpanned. John’s golden rule is to treat others the way you expect to be treated. “Take responsibility for your actions,” he said. “Be the best you can be.” John certainly follows his own advice.

Today he travels the world and shares his motivational message with thousands. He has met world leaders including Nelson Mandela, who once sat on the floor with John and talked about goal setting. He is also an avid fishing enthusiast and loves scuba diving. One bold St Michael’s student asked, “Do you wish you had legs?” John reflected on watching his brothers play rugby league and said, “I wanted to be just like them, at times I got pretty sad.” But he was quick to turn it around, just like he turned around any misconceptions about surface appearances. “Instead of worrying about what you can’t do, think about what you can do,” John said.

WHILE most councils are offering a green bin service to recycle green waste, Port Stephens Council will remain with its two bin system unchanged. According to Council’s Waste Management Coordinator, Aaron Malloy, green waste has been recycled in Port Stephens since 1999 through an advanced resource recovery technology.

THE Tomaree Business Chamber hosted their business breakfast on Wednesday with sponsors being yours truly, News Of The Area. It was a hugely successful morning with a huge crowd in attendance. Fly Pelican donated return air tickets for two to all in attendance who presented with their business card. The winner of the Fly Pelican air tickets was Mr Chris Crawford and the tickets were presented by Mr Marty Hawley, a Director of Fly Pelican. The topic of the Tomaree Business Chamber breakfast was Nelson Bay and its future. Presentations were
given from Ryan Palmer, President of the Tomaree Business Chamber, and also from Port Stephens Council staff David Rowland and Jeff Bretag. Ryan Palmer said, “It is great to see so much interest in Nelson Bay and its future.” “We have been let down by our elected representatives and council for too long and have not seen Nelson Bay progress nor kept up to date,” Mr Palmer said. “The Tomaree Business Chamber will drive the community’s vision for Nelson Bay and not back down,” Ryan Palmer added. “We want to see a nice place for locals to live and for business to prosper and that definitely does not include a 21 storey building in our area.”

Hidden face of Domestic Violence By Jewell DRURY
ENDALLDV was first established in answer to the national conversation regarding domestic violence revolving around who can be a victim, what services and support are available and who is able to access these services in times of crisis. The team at Endalldv (end all domestic violence) understands that anyone, male or female, can find themselves dealing with domestic violence in their lives from a partner, spouse,
family member or carer. A rising number of men who have experienced domestic violence and who, with their children, have been unable to find emergency housing in the Port Stephens area, has prompted a visit by the Endalldv team to the Tomaree Peninsula. The visit is expected in April 2017, with a call out to all interested parties, inviting them to host an evening or lunch time event to hear more information of how our community can be involved in supplying
tangible help for men and their children who suffer domestic violence. “I believe there are no refuges for men with their children in the Port Stephens or Newcastle area, although we do have counselling for men who have suffered domestic violence,” Lynn Vatner from the Yacaaba Centre, Nelson Bay told News Of The Area. “The shirt off my back” was a common phrase that described what lengths our community would go, to support those in crisis.
Not a Silent Disease
The Endalldv campaign and associated programs seek to build on this ideal. “So far we have produced overnight accommodation options in two locations for 2190 victims annually with another 10 planned this year and we are just getting started,” Leith Erikson, volunteer at Endalldv told News Of The Area. “Imagine what we can do with your assistance to help those men and their children in Port Stephens,” Mr Erikson said.

Her aunt, Julie Folpp, organised a fundraiser last year so the family could take time out from the day-to-day struggles associated with Angela’s gruelling treatment. Despite the pain she continues to endure, Angela is a brave and inspiring woman. Her central focus now is to make other people more aware. “No red flags were raised initially, and so my main aim is to raise awareness of the symptoms, not only amongst other women, but also for
those working in the medical profession.” Angela wears a teal ribbon (the international colour for ovarian cancer awareness) and describes herself as a “walking awareness program”. “It is important that members of the public know the symptoms. They can also help by donating funds to Ovarian Cancer Australia to assist with ongoing research and resources,” Mrs Wood said.

WHEN 35-year-old Angela Wood first experienced signs that something wasn’t quite right, her symptoms were ones familiar to many women. “I had reflux as well as bloating and abdominal pain,” Mrs Wood said. “Originally, it was put down to kidney stones or gall
bladder issues. I did have an ultrasound, but it wasn’t a pelvic one,” she said. Mrs Wood’s symptoms continued to worsen and at the end of August 2016 she had an urgent CT scan. On 2 September 2016, Angela was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “At first it was incredibly

hard,” she told News Of The Area. “Everything was taken away from me. I couldn’t work and my mum came to stay to help care for me.” “Chemo day was cry day,” she said. “I just tried to be as normal as I could for the kids.” Early detection and symptomatic awareness is vital. Statistics provided by Ovarian Cancer Australia indicate that “women have an 80 percent chance of being alive and well five years post diagnosis if the disease is caught in its early stages”. But three-quarters of women are diagnosed “in advanced stages” and it has the “lowest survival rate of any women’s cancer”. Angela has a strong demeanour that contrasts with her petite frame, and despite the emotional and physical pain that her ovarian cancer has caused, she describes herself as “really lucky”. Her family and friends have rallied around her. “Everyone has been very supportive; it is beyond words,” she said.

AN afternoon called “Men and Motors” will be held at All Saints Anglican Anna Bay on Saturday 25 March from 1pm to 4pm. Local mechanic Gary Roth will be sharing his knowledge and expertise on ‘What you can do and can’t do’ yourself with modern cars and motorbikes. Reverend Kesh Govan, Senior Pastor of All Saints, told Bay News Of The Area, “This will be a great event for the guy who loves tinkering with his car.” “Modern cars are so complicated and so compact, so Gary’s advice
will come in handy,” Kesh Govan said. There will be a show and shine, with prizes for the best in show and most unique vehicle. “I’m really looking forward to this event as I’ve always had a fascination for sports cars having owned several sports cars in the past, including some convertibles,” Rev Kesh added. This event is open to everyone and a free lunch is provided. Straight after the event there is an outdoor church service led by All Saints Youth and guest speaker, Kim Miller.

I’m also pleased that you think I am so multi-skilled that I not only write my column, but also print News Of The Area’s three papers. Goodness, what a misguided pedestal you have me on. I can’t tell you how it happened, as I am not privy to the machinations of the print production department, but I imagine it involved either an epileptic fit or a work experience kid called Nigel. Or both. Thank you for your esteemed praise and feel free to put me back on that pedestal, or at least the second rung of the step ladder.

Palmer runs for Mayor and Councillor By Jewell DRURY
RYAN Palmer, President of the Tomaree Business Chamber and the convenor of Nelson Bay NOW, has just announced that he will be running for Mayor of Port Stephens and for East Ward Councillor, as an Independent Candidate at the next local elections in Port Stephens. Ryan said he is completely invested in the Port Stephens area and what its future holds, working with the community as well as mentoring through the Real Futures Foundation, Ryan also sponsors local sporting and community events. Ryan Palmer has been a world
ranked tennis player, in both the pro and junior tour and currently resides in Nelson Bay with his wife and two children. “I have not taken this decision lightly. It’s a decision borne from the confidence, passion and knowledge that I have, that I can lead Port Stephens into a prosperous future,” Mr Palmer told News Of The Area. “I am excited about the challenges ahead for not only Port Stephens but for myself and I’m looking forward to listening to all the residents’ needs from across our beautiful region.” Mr Palmer’s core policies include keeping Port Stephens as
Port Stephens with no voluntary merger with Dungog and to increase local level funding for domestic violence shelters and awareness campaigns. Keeping Nelson Bay’s car parks in community hands and increasing the number of car parking spaces in the CBD are other focal points. Mr Palmer is determined to not hand over $20 million of community land to developers. He is also determined that there will be no 21 storey buildings in the Port Stephens area and wants to introduce a new Port Stephens Infrastructure & Development Corporation and to increase local level funding for Mental Health
Merger Merry-Go-Round PORT Stephens councillors have supported a Mayoral Minute which will see Council write to the NSW Government in support of a voluntary amalgamation with Dungog Shire Council. Speaking after the meeting, Mayor Bruce MacKenzie said the decision to propose a voluntary merger was the morally
correct decision. “We fought to merge with Dungog last year and I stand by that proposal today,” he said. “The advantages for both Dungog and Port Stephens are as clear as day. “A merge of our two councils will future-proof Port Stephens, by increasing us in scale and capacity. It
is a popular decision with residents, and brings together like-minded communities,” Mayor MacKenzie said. But Kate Washington MP has called out Mayor Bruce MacKenzie’s push for a merger with Dungog as a desperate land grab which will cost the residents of Port Stephens. “Our community has had

A plan to revitalise CBDs across Port Stephens creating employment growth as well as keeping our youth in Port Stephens is high on Ryan Palmers agenda as is facilitating greater access to Specialist Health Professionals within Port Stephens. THE Probus Club of Port Stephens enjoyed the first barbecue of the year at Bagnalls Beach Reserve with minimal interference from the kookaburras. Fifty-seven members and friends soaked up the perfect sunshiney weather especially ordered by barbecue director, Kevin. “The master chefs excelled with their cooking skills and Hodges steaks were up to the usual standard of tenderness,” Ann Gibson told Bay News Of The Area. “There was lots of chatting and of course
laughter was the order of the day and the perfect way to get our Probus fellowship into action,” Ms Gibson said Forty-seven members also enjoyed La La Land at the Movie Night and the intrepid Walkers participated in the Birubi trek and a reviving coffee at Crest the next day. There are lots of activities to be involved in this club including Social Croquet and Fun Golf Days coming up very soon. Tennis Rules for Golf By David FLATT NELSON Bay Golf Club is responding to research in the golf industry by trialing shortened forms of the game. The trials have been carried out throughout the Twilight series, where members and visitors have enjoyed the social atmosphere created by the experimental formats. Whilst these have mainly been 9–hole events, on Thursday 2 March the club held its first ever 6–hole event. The event also had a later
hit-off time of 5.15 pm to give workers a better chance of playing in an event after work. Local optometrist Tom Hammond took out the inaugural Men’s 6-hole event with a stableford score of 17 points. Simonne Irvine, a member of the club’s bar staff, took out the Ladies event with a score of 12 points. Simmone only took up golf when she joined the staff of the golf club. As Simonne said, “I could see how much fun the members were having when
they came in after their rounds, so I thought I’d give it a go myself”. After attaining her golf handicap, Simonne now plays regularly in Ladies and Mixed events. As Twilight Coordinator Dave Flatt explained, the main aim of the series is to offer light-hearted forms of the game in the hope that members of the public feel like having a go at golf in a non-threatening atmosphere. The event on Thursday 16 March will be played under “Tennis Rules”. This simply means that
players may take one “second serve” per hole. The highlight of the series, will undoubtedly be the “Cross Country” event to be held on Thursday March 30, just three days before the end of Daylight Saving. Under this format, a course is set with little resemblance to the usual order of play. Demand is likely to be high for the remaining events, and bookings for members and non-members can be made through the pro shop on 49812073.
