Aussie Battler Paige By Sarah STOKES PAIGE Reynolds, 13, has recently undergone two gruelling spine operations, and an infection, to fight her way back to health. The St. Philips Christian College pupil, who suffers with the condition Scoliosis, had been off school for ten weeks. Paige bravely went back to school last week on a part time basis. The initial six hour operation was a success and Paige went home after three weeks in hospital. Paige’s Mum, Linda Talbot, said that she was not happy

Paige in the hospital the whole time to be near her daughter. Paige and Linda tried to keep busy with craft projects, visits from therapy dogs and reptiles. Eventually, Paige was deemed well enough to go home as part of the Out and About Programme.
Naval People Volume 1: 1900 - 1974’ It recounts the stories behind the orders and decorations presented to Australian naval personnel during this period. Retired Naval Captain, Ian, has written no less
than 13 books and had 11 published to date. Having moved to the Bay in the year 2000, Ian began his writing career as well as gaining a PhD from the University of Newcastle in 2005. Ian has intended the work to be eminently readable and hopes that it will also aid high school students with their studies. Bravo Zulu has filledin all the gaps in others’ previous works to be the definitive work on the subject and has been 7 years in the making. Ian plans to approach high schools with his work and is very keen to speak about it to groups. As part of the research for the book, Ian had to travel to the UK, Canada, USA and Japan. He was able to interview as many naval and ex-naval personnel as possible and their families. Through this he discovered some amazing stories as well

This would involve a pica line (a portable antibiotic drip) to administer her antibiotics. Linda had to change the pica line every day, which she said made her feel quite nervous. The line is now out, but Paige still has to take oral antibiotics for three months.

Last week, Ian travelled to Canberra for the official launch of the book by the Chief of Navy, Admiral Tim Barrett, no less. Tim Barrett also wrote the book’s foreword. Ian is now working on the second volume: 1974 2014. consultation. The SBCA has also met with the local member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington MP who supports in principle the Headland remaining in public ownership and managed as a Reserve Trust. The Tomaree Lodge site was part of a garrison established on
Tomaree Headland during World War II to defend the entrance to the port and to provide for amphibious training for U.S. and Australian soldiers. At the end of the war the structures at the base of Tomaree Head became an army hospital and in 1947 were transferred to the NSW Department of Public Health, which established a facility for the disabled.

q Keith Barnard holding up a copy of “The Bay” Photo by Jewell Drury By Jewell DRURY NELSON bay resident Keith Barnard had a sense of Déjà vu and was very excited to see the recent alternative media for the Tomaree Peninsula. Keith is the son of Gordon Harold Barnard,
the editor and publisher of the Bay’s first free advertising newspaper called “The Bay” in 1954. Gordons Barnard worked at various jobs throughout his life His printing started as a young man, hand printing leaflets on a very small
homemade printing press for the union movement. “I can still see Dad using that little printing press, holding it in his hand as he printed those papers,” Keith Barnard, Gordon’s son told Bay News Of The Area. The first newspaper to be printed in Nelson Bay, “The Bay” was printed in a shed that Gordon built on a spare block of land. Mr Barnard purchased two second hand printing presses, a crown flat bed and a Platen Quarto plus type. Bringing the printing presses from Parramatta, Gordon borrowed a truck from Neville Blanch, a local carrier. Halfway there Mr Barnard realised he didn’t have a truck licence, but unfortunately that wasn’t his only problem. Shortly after beginning his return journey, the load shifted and he had to call in a carrying firm from Hornsby who very kindly straightened the load and
tied it down securely for the rest of the journey. The large press weighed two tonnes and to remove it from the truck, Mr Barnard had to dig a hole deep enough to allow the back of the truck to be level with the ground. Pipes and rollers were then used to eventually place the equipment into the shed. Mr Barnard enjoyed the nuts and bolts of running the local newspaper in the way of collecting advertisements, information from various committees, providing local news, setting up, printing and delivering the newspapers. “The printing press although weighing two tonne, was later stolen from it’s site in Nelson Bay, who knows how they stole it with it weighing so much,” Keith Barnard said. Although Gordon Barnard did not make a fortune in the newspaper
business, he did become well known which gave him great credentials to obtain further work. In 1957 after four years, Mr Barnard ceased printing. Mr Barnard was a hard working perfectionist, always arguing for an honest government and a fair deal for everyone. He was involved in many community projects including Secretary of the school P&C. He drew the plans and marked out the Nelson Bay tennis courts, situated next door to the Nelson Bay Bowling Club, was an original member of the Nelson Bay Golf Club and helped organise and exhibit orchid shows for charities in the local area. Gordon was a member of the local swimming club, and is well known for drawing up the plans while working as a volunteer to bring the Nelson Bay Community Hospital up to Government standards. There are so many stories like Gordon Barnard’s in our community, men and women who have worked hard to make our community what it is today. Keith Barnard, Gordon’s son has also done his fair share of community service in our area that however, is news for another day.

Anyone can nominate a student to attend a Real Futures training program. In conjunction with the Year Advisor, the students who are deemed most

Catholic High School will draw from Bay By Rachael VAUGHAN A GROUP of Year 3 students from across Port Stephens and the Myall Coast participated in a very special ceremony this week. The official naming of what will be their new secondary school. All Year 3 students from St Brigid’s Primary School, Raymond Terrace, St Michael’s Primary School, Nelson Bay and St Joseph’s Primary School, Bulahdelah attended the official naming ceremony on the grounds of the new Catholic Secondary school in Medowie. Catherine McAuley Catholic College, Medowie,
which will open in 2020, has today been announced as the official name of the Hunter’s newest school which aims to cater to the demand for Catholic education in the Port Stephens region. Bishop of MaitlandNewcastle, Bill Wright, announced the name of the new school this morning on the Medowie Road site where the planned school will be built. As part of the announcement, Bishop Bill unveiled a foundation stone and plaque to reveal the new school name. Present at the unveiling were Director of Catholic Schools, Ray Collins, Member for Port Stephens, Kate
Washington, principals from across the diocese, parent representatives and student representatives from three local Catholic primary schools who will form part of the first Year 7 cohort. Bishop Bill said the characteristics of a school under the patronage of Catherine McAuley, grounded in the Mercy traditions of justice, excellence, integrity, courage, hospitality and mercy had inspired the college’s name. “Catherine McAuley presents a strong and relevant female identity of the Catholic Church and a lift story which can speak to adolescents and young adults in a secondary school,” said Bishop Bill. The school will eventually cater for 1,200 students, Years 7 to 12 and will feature

Our own ‘My Fair Lady’ By Jewell DRURY MOST people know the highly recognisable line by everybody’s favourite Eliza Doolittle,“ The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.” This year is the 60th Anniversary of My Fair Lady and Bay News Of The Area wishes to have it’s readers know that we have our very own “My Fair Lady” living here in Shoal Bay. Shoal Bay resident Rosalind Ashton was in the original Australian production of the show at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1960 and is excited to be attending the 60th Anniversary show. Dame Julie Andrews, Broadways original Eliza Doolittle, directed the anniversary production of Lerner & Loewe’s classic My Fair Lady to the delight of Australian and International audiences. Ms Ashton and partner Graham Standen will attend Wednesday night’s performance of the show which is now in its final weeks at the Joan Sutherland
Theatre, Sydney Opera House. In honour of Ms Ashton being in the original cast, she will be invited backstage to meet the cast of the 2016 production. Rosalind Ashton performed as a singer in the original production, as well as acting as understudy for various roles including the role of Eliza Doolittle. 55 years on, Ms Ashton remembers her audition at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Sydney when she sang ‘Summertime’ from the 1935 Opera Porgy and Bess. “I had to sing on a huge stage in front of only 3 people in the large theatre, I remember it as if it was yesterday,” Rosalind Ashton told Bay News Of The Area. Rosalind remembers the costumes of My Fair Lady, as they channelled Broadways beautiful originals bringing the stage alive with their brilliance. “The most famous and most memorable scene in My Fair Lady was the Ascot Races where all the cast wore black and white,” Ms Ashton said.

Revolutionary program begins By Jewell DRURY
SIXTEEN Students from across the Hunter including Tomaree High School and St Philip’s Christian College Port Stephens, have recently embarked on a Vocational Education and Training program that combines previously unconnected TAFE modules with the niche professional placement to provide a clear pathway to STEM careers and the jobs of the future. Department of Industry (Training Services NSW ) partnering with Regional Development Australia (RDA) and Hunter Tafe, the
STEM-ship initiative is a pilot program which directly addresses Hunter Industry’s need for recruits with a combination of sophisticated STEM skills and well developed problem solving, team work, communication and decision making skills. This students undergo an extensive 15 week program in which they will complete a combination of training at Tighes Hill Tafe and work placement. “There will be many jobs that will become available in the next few years around Aerospace and Defence which is really exciting given that we’ve been through the
mining downturn,” Rick Evans STEMship Co-ordinator and Industry Training Advisor from the Dept of Industry, told Bay News Of The Area. “We want to provide a pathway for the students when they complete the program in the form of an apprenticeship, traineeship or further training via a Certificate 4 or a Diploma,” Mr Evans said. STEM skilling is designed to provide a VET pathway for students to move into highly technical apprenticeships and traineeships, higher level Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications with the
possibility of University study once a trade or VET study is completed. 27 applicants from 12 schools across the region applied for the STEMship program and 16 were selected through a competitive selection process. Work placements with industry partners include Varley Engineering, Jetstar,EDC Consultants, AmpControl, Bohemia Interactive Simulations, Boeing Defence, BAE Systems, UAV Air, Cummins South Pacific and start ups AutopilotHQ, Virtual Perspective and Obelisk Systems.

Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network (PSSPN) are volunteers with ambitions to reduce suicide in the region. The organisation provides family activities, information, resources and education programs. A dedicated park was
created and a “Walk With Us” day is held annually to help raise awareness of the impact of suicide. More than 2000 Australians die by suicide every year, affecting families, friends, workplaces and communities. The Suicide Prevention Training is excellent for friends, families, carers, mentors and service providers in Port Stephens. The goal of the program is to educate and provide tools and resources to help
recognize and raise awareness about potential suicide and to respond in positive and helpful ways. The well qualified and experienced teacher is funded from the Wesley Lifeforce program. Tailor Made Fish Farm nominated for state award NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair, and President of NSW Farmers, Derek Schoen last week announced the four finalists for the 2016 NSW Farmer of the Year Award. Mr Blair said the finalists are leaders in their fields, who have demonstrated excellence in farming. “The state’s $12 billion primary industries are in

Rising through the ranks FROM a career in wall and floor tiling, to living the dream on the Championship Tour (CT), and chasing his goals of becoming a World Champion surfer, life has been exciting for Chris Michalak. Chris started surfing at five years old in the shorebreak at Fingal Bay with his older brother Luke and sister Kelly. Now aged 29, and as a result of two successful overseas competitions recently, Chris is ranked 300th in the World Qualifying Series (WQS). “Determination and continued support from not only family and friends, but local businesses too have all contributed to my success and make all the personal
sacrifices worthwhile,” Chris told News Of The Area. “On average it costs $5K to compete in overseas events, there are over 45 events outside of Australia so it can get crazy expensive,” Luke said. Just in the last week, Chris has been lucky enough to have support from Lisa Mondy, Shane and Trevor Griffiths from RIDE water park and Kim Burton, owner Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota. Chris’s good mate Brett McGee from ASI shapes his MAGIC boards. “As his personal trainer/ manager/sponsor and motivator, I am proud of my brother for what he has achieved and I believe he will one day be World Champion,” said Luke Michalak.
Chris recently won the open Men’s Kiama Surfarama, bringing home a cheque which goes directly into funding his future competitions. Last week he came third place in the open men’s final at the 55th Mattara Surf Classic. Chris will be competing full time for the next few years trying to break into the Champion Tour. “Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, training daily, the love of the ocean and surfing are a must for me,” said Chris. Luke would also like to acknowledge and thank Chris’s sponsors, Australian Surfboard Industries, Port Stephens Surf School, Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Ride waterpark, ION and Spy optics.
