Small catch a great result WHEN it comes to fishing, bigger is usually better, but that wasn’t the case during a diving tour conducted by the Newcastle Neptunes through a Go Fishing Day grant from the NSW Department of Primary Industries. Part of the day’s activities involved local kids buddying up with experienced divers to collect refuse along the Breakwall. “The day was all about safety and sustainability,” event organiser Greg Finn told News Of The Area. “One of our aims was to clean up an area

traditionally associated with waste including plastic bags and rusty cans. To our pleasant surprise, the area along the breakwall looked cleaner than it has in years,” he said. “We collected fishing line, old ropes and broken crab traps, but there was minimal rubbish associated with general public littering,” he said. A highlight of the dive was spotting a large Mangrove Jack. There was also an array of soft sponges, corals and nudibranchs inhabiting the wall.

on his foot whilst he was out chopping wood recently. The day after Mr Ekin had unknowingly been bitten, he completed a five kilometre run.

given anti-inflammatory medication. This did nothing to help. Mr Ekin said, “My leg swelled up to twice its normal size, I was in so much pain and my leg was starting to turn red.” Mr Ekins ended up in Tomaree Community Hospital where he spent the next three days with

an IV drip in place to help clear his body of the toxins from the spiders. “Even though I am fit and healthy, five weeks after being bitten and I am still recovering.” “My leg is still red and the bitten parks are very obvious.” Mr Ekins explained, “As I was wearing thongs, and there were wood

chips going everywhere, I honestly didn’t notice being bitten.” “I noticed the messy spider webs, and brushed them aside, never did I think I would be bitten.” Mr Ekins would like to remind everyone to wear closed in shoes and be mindful when in the garden, especially at this time of year.

MEETING Salamander Bay resident, Albert Brinsley Sheridan OAM, is life changing. Quick witted, articulate, refined, intelligent, humble and kind are the first words that come to mind when meeting this man. At 99 years of age, Albert has lived a life of Community Service in various positions. Known as “Bert”, Mr Sheridan was born in Tamworth 22 August 1917, the second youngest of eight children. Bert’s parents struggled to feed and clothe their young family so Bert left school at a young age to go to work, earning seven shillings and sixpence per week to help the family. At 27 years of age, Bert completed a three year course in local government at a local technical college resulting in a promotion to a senior role within his workplace. The position afforded Mr Sheridan the opportunity to help people which he embraced with a passion. Throughout Bert’s life, he has held many high profile positions in various places, including the Mayor of Windsor, but it has been his charitable work that has brought Bert the most pleasure. Over 34 years, Bert worked tirelessly for the people of Kempsey, the community of the Hawkesbury and the Port Stephens region. 26 January 2008 in the Australia Day Queen Honours, Albert Brinsley Sheridan was awarded an Order of Australia (OAM) for Service to the Community of Port Stephens. New look for shopping centre By Sarah STOKES IF YOU’VE recently noticed that the signage and name has changed at the Salamander Bay Shopping Centre, you would be right! Effective immediately, the centre has been incorporated into a store under the management of ‘Vicinity Centres’ who own and manage more than 87 shopping centres around Australia. Created and launched

in 2015, Vicinity Centres is the result of the merger of two of Australia’s leading retail groups, Federation Centres and Novion Group. KATE Washington MP has called on Port Stephens Council to disclose the total cost to ratepayers of the Mayor’s failed BMX Bike track. In August 2015, 50 -60 truckloads of dirt was dumped in the car park of the Salt Ash Pony Club grounds, known as the “Bruce Mackenzie Complex”. According to an interview that was given by the Mayor Bruce Mackenzie, he had the dirt delivered to the site for a BMX track. Unfortunately there was no process or plan for a BMX track approved by Council nor a development application. The user of the grounds were opposed to the plan. Port Stephens Council initially announced that the soil had been tested and was free of contamination. However on 30 September the EPA issued a $45,000 fine to Port Stephens Council due to the soil containing potentially harmful acid sulphate. The company engaged by the Council to test the soil, was also fined for providing a false report. Media reports state that Port Stephens Council has set aside $40,000 for the BMX bike project. “Port Stephens Council staff have acted as directed by the Mayor and ratepayers are paying the price, they just don’t know how much,” Kate Washington MP told Bay News Of The Area. Costs that are known and anticipated are

$45,000 to the EPA, and the cost of transporting contaminated soil to the site. More costs by engaging contractors to treat the soil on site on numerous occasions, engaging Cardno Pty Ltd to test the soil (Cardno was fined $16,000 by the EPA for supplying a false report.) More costs incurred are for the removal and legal disposal of contaminated soil, the redirection of Council staff time in responding to and justifying the Mayor’s actions. “From the outset there has not been any proper planning or oversight of this project, it’s just the Mayor doing as he pleases without any regard for other users of the grounds,” Kate Washington said. “There’s never been any community consultation or even an assessment of the risks of a BMX bike track operating in the same area as young children on ponies.”Ms Washington added. “It beggars belief that our Council can spend money on a campaign against illegal dumping and at the same time, be fined by the EPA for the unlawful use of land as a waste facility.” Kate Washington believes that our community deserves transparent and honest governance by its Council. “Our community deserves transparent and honest governance by its Council. PASSIONATE about “keeping the memory of steel alive.” Aubrey Brooks continues to share the history of BHP with Bay residents. Given his family were working for BHP from the first to the last whistle, a total of 125 years between his grandfather, father, brother and himself, Aubrey has a wealth of knowledge worth hearing. “There were many people travelling on the BHP buses from the Bay to and from the BHP site each and every day,” Mr Brooks told News Of The Area. “For many Bay residents, BHP was a way of life, it provided financial opportunity for families to

enjoy a good life,” he said. Lifelong bonds were created and are still maintained today through social media and annual reunions organised by Mr Brooks. Although, Aubrey is 71 years young, he is taking bookings for his free presentations for 2017 and continues to organise the annual Men and Women of Steel reunion. The Open Door Café is open from 10.30am to 2.30pm every Friday and is located at All Saints Church on the corner of Tomaree and Church Streets, Nelson Bay. It has been operating in various forms for many years and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Fifteen months ago three friends Verina Rallings, Beryl Howard and Maggie Dominey decided to reinvent the café. Beryl and Verina are the two talented chefs cooking two or three choices for the main meal and the desserts. Maggie acts are the waitress. “I love the homemade meals and desserts,caramel slices, lemon meringue pie and apple pie and cream,” Wendy Sharman, a Nelson Bay resident, told Bay News Of The Area. The Open Door Café is not a drop in centre, nor a soup kitchen, but is run on a donations basis with most patrons happy to pay

The three friends volunteer their time and efforts to the Cafe. The hard work of the trio and the generosity of the community over the last 15 months has enabled The Open Door Café to purchase a specialised pram for a disabled boy in Vanuatu. “Through serving our community in this way, we have seen the building of friendships between our regular guests and also holiday makers who have dined with us - and on their return to the Bay they come back and visit us like old friends,” 90 year old Beryl Howard told Bay News Of The Area. “We have a band of wonderful helpers on a rotation roster who support us, and we believe that investing our time and talent through Open Door Cafe has created a more interconnected community,” Maggie Dominey said.

Project Neighbour By Jewell DRURY EACH month, the Nelson Bay Rotarians chauffeur local residents to various locations sharing an afternoon of friendship and afternoon tea together called Project Neighbour. This month, Bay News Of the Area had the extreme privilege of interviewing some of the participants. The room was full of laughter, wisdom and many many years of life experiences as everyone sipped tea and ate homemade biscuits, slices, cakes and sandwiches. Ranging in ages from 60 to 97 years old, each participant/story teller had a tale to tell of a life well lived. The Nelson Bay Rotary Club members are all volunteers and use their own cars to transport the participants to a new venue each month.

“We try to find a venue with a nice outlook so come rain or come shine we can still have an enjoyable experience together,” Judy Mitchell President of the Nelson Bay Rotary Club told Bay News Of the Area. “I really love coming out for afternoon tea and meeting new people, I have found wonderful friends in this group,” Salamander Bay resident Suzanne Stuckey said. Ms Stuckey born in Vietnam in 1934, came to Australia in 1960 with her husband Rodney, who was a diplomat after they met in Laos whilst Suzanne was working at a high ranking Hotel. Rodney and Suzanne were married in Cambodia and then moved to Australia. The couple had four children and lived in Adelaide until Rodney passed away four years ago when Suzanne moved to Salamander Bay to

newsofthearea.com.au SHOAL Bay and the CBD of Nelson Bay was abuzz on Wednesday with whispers that The Shoal Bay Country Club had just been purchased by a businessman, who is the owner of several other hotels in the Hunter Region. In 2014, after 20 years of being completely family owned and operated, the Shoal Bay Resort and Spa leased one of its major sections, the hotels operations to the Wyndham Hotel Group. The resort became part of the Wyndham Hotel Group, the world’s largest and most diverse hotel business, with a global portfolio of nearly 8,000 hotels and approximately 683,300 rooms in 73 countries. The resorts name changed to the Ramada Resort Shoal Bay The Country Club Hotel, except for the individual apartments and villas, were

all owned by the McPhee family. In 2014, Mr Jay McPhee told local media that other big name chains had approached the family in the past, but Mr McPhee had picked Wyndham because they held similar standards to his own and he felt that it could help boost tourism in the area. “This property holds special meaning for generations of Australians who have enjoyed its hospitality over the decades,” Mr McPhee said. Coastal Pubs are highly sought after, and with such natural beauty looking over the crystal clear waters of Shoal Bay, it was only a matter of time before a buyer was going to snap up this iconic landmark. Woodworking a dying art By Jewell DRURY WALK through The Port Stephens Community Woodworkers shed and the smell of sawdust will recall to your mind days of old, where men worked with wood, honing their craft. In a time where the art of woodwork is nearly lost, there is an oasis awaiting those men and women who are willing to learn and discover this lost art. Nelson Bay resident Geoff McClelland, a Surveyor by trade, is the workshop manager at The Port Stephens Community Woodworkers Group, situated in a separate building at the rear of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre. After he retired, Mr McClelland restored furniture at Port Stephens Furniture Renovations Anna Bay and

was a member of the group several years ago when it was in the original old Tomaree High School building. He later rejoined the group in its current building where there is today an average of 60 members. The motto of the group is to “to teach and learn” and welcome the community of Port Stephens to come along. “You do not need to have any prior knowledge of woodworking only a desire to learn,” Geoff McClelland told Bay News Of The Area. “At 10 am we lay down tools for morning tea, talk about our projects and other interesting subjects,” Mr McClelland said. The woodworkers group has a well equipped workshop and there is a wide variety of activities available including wood turning, dovetail and bandsaw box making.

Biggest Recess THE Office of the Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP), with the involvement of the Department of Premier and Cabinet and NSW Health, last week launched the ‘Biggest Recess’ which will be held on Friday 28 October as the lead initiative of Children’s Week 2016. Andrew Johnson, Advocate for Children and Young People, said it was everyone’s responsibility to ensure children today grow up healthy and well, so they can live full and active lives through a balance of exercise and healthy eating. “We all play a part in influencing the behaviour and habits of the children in our lives. It is often difficult to communicate messages about healthy eating and exercise, so the Biggest Recess is a light-hearted and interactive event that centres around role-modelling for adults, parents and guardians to promote healthy behaviours to the children in their lives,” said Mr Johnson. Church group Suicide Prevention Network for Tomaree growth By Jewell DRURY LAST month saw the celebration of 50 years since the construction of the first Lutheran Church in the Bay Area. The Anna Bay location saw the Lutheran church as an active, important part of the community for more than 45 years. Unfortunately a couple of years ago the doors closed due to an ever decreasing number of parishioners. Many of the local

parishioners dispersed and some began attending All Saints Anglican Church. All Saints Anglican Church, Nelson Bay has recently announced that they will be leasing the former Lutheran Church building and site as an extension arm of the Anglican Church. “The Lutheran Church was a very community focused church, working with local charities, organisations and schools etc, always promoting community,” Reverend Kesh Govan, All Saints Minister, told Bay News Of The Area. “We want to continue with the same community focused tradition but we are excited

The network has established pathways, gardens, a bench seat, artwork and a beautiful ‘Cairn’ that is now 7ft high.

I hear you ask what is a Cairn? “A Cairn is a place of Memorial, where people can place a rock or stone on top of the ones already there as a memoriam to a lost loved one or in honour of their own survival,” Elizabeth S c h i e m e r, Secretary of the Network, told News Of The Area. “As you follow the path of this beautiful place of serenity you will come to the place where the Cairns sits,” Elizabeth said. “It is now just over 7ft high and more stones are being added daily.” The annual event, ‘Walk with Us’ day attracted more than 200 people to the event with entertainment by “Summer Breeze” and Special Guest Speaker, Soraya Saraswati. The area has become a dedicated place for peace and reflection and is an absolute credit to everyone who

has been involved in the transformation. It has been an ongoing inspiring project that has engaged hundreds of people as they come together to create such a beautiful space. A huge thank you to Dave Sams, Peter and Gail Murray for their proactive leadership, action, encouragement and inspiration, Port Stephens Recycling Centre, Anna Bay Paint, Profencing, Boral, Boat Harbour Parks and Reserves and Port Stephens Council. Special ongoing thanks goes to a group of Tomaree High Students who are an absolute credit to their generation as the students and teachers regularly maintain the gardens and project for the network. “The path, landscaping, seat and artwork were designed by local artist Rick Pettit,” Elizabeth Scheimer said. Margaret (Margie) Richardson, wife of the late Geoffrey (Richo) Richardson, created a rugby wave of compassion and kindness when she asked for help to do something in memory of her husband. Geoffrey Richardson was a Sergeant with the NSW Police

force, who was killed on duty whilst responding to calls for help on a Police pursuit. He, along with his rugby playing wife Margaret, was a big rugby fan, and the sport held a special place in their relationship. It was this memory that sparked the idea for Margy to

One of Margie’s dearest friends, Stacy Mathieson, told News Of The Area, “Because of Margie’s passion for rugby, she decided to honour Richo by putting the inaugural game together. She sent a call out on Facebook and received a lot of interest. From that, she put together a Facebook group where she organised training and logistics.” “Margie’s amazing work colleagues then also organised Richo’s Rugby Ball for the evening after the games, including raffle prizes and auctions both online and live,” Stacy said. They called themselves Richo’s Rugby Girls, the ladies were inspirational and came together to support Margie, many had never played rugby. It took real courage to take the field. There were many tears after they respectfully observed a minute silence for Sergeant Geoff Richardson.

Stacy spoke of the outpouring of support to Margie and her family and Richo’s devastating and horrific passing, and paid tribute to them. “Margie is the strongest, most loving person there is.” “ She is such a protective and fiercely passionate mum and friend.” “This game showed me what true friendship meant. The support and compassion Marg and Richo would always

show to others, was reflected in the vast numbers of family, friends and community members who came along and celebrated Richo’s life.” “The phenomenal and unwavering support shown by their colleagues in the Police Force was a sight to behold and second to none It was an honour to have been a part of Richo’s life and my family and I will always there for Margie and the boys,” Stacy told News Of The Area.” Another player in the team, Lindsey Corke, also spoke to News Of The Area about the comradeship of the team, most of whom had only just met, but also the special bond between Margie and Stacy. “They’ve been friends for over twenty years, it’s actually glorious watching them together. The Summer of Surf series is open to all Surf Life Savers, with the very best Ironmen and Ironwomen, swimmers, ski and board paddlers making it onto the Fox Sports finals broadcast each week. “We started this series to create more opportunities for the next generation of athletes to race at an elite level and inspire nippers across the country,” series

“Last chance to play the Angel Billy Golf Day”

A SHOTGUN start is how the 19th Angel Billy Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Golf fundraiser event will be started on Sunday 6 November. Each participant is allocated a starting tee position and continue through the 27 hole golf course held at Nelson Bay Golf Club. With a 9am hit off the course is estimated to be completed by about 1pm. The participants are then able to relax at a two course lunch at Nelson Bay Bowling Club. Followed by auctions, raffles and prizes. Gary Troon of Anna Bay along with Jo Holley of Corlette, have worked together

to co-ordinate the event. Gary has been a member of the Golf Classic for 11 years, first six years as the Chairman and the subsequent five years as Co-ordinator of this event. “I am very proud to be associated with the Golf Classic and hope it is another success so we can continue to raise a lot of money for the Westpac helicopters as they are such an important part of the community,” Mr Troon told Bay News of The Area. “Not everyone realises that the Westpac helicopter team are called in for not only emergency hospital transfers, but are
