LEAH Slockee said local Australia Day events always bring the community together. “I am proud to be Australian and there is so much to celebrate in the local area,” she said. “The history of the Worimi people, the great community spirit, our volunteer firefighters and the amazing natural environment are just a few.” On Friday 26 January, communities will be at the heart of Australia Day celebrations around Port Stephens and Myall Coast regions. A host of activities, entertainment and presentations have been organised to celebrate all things that make Australia great. Australia Day marks the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet on 26 January 1788, the date Captain Arthur Phillip raised the Union Jack to signal the beginning of the colony. A push to change the date
stems from the view that celebrating on a day which commemorates the invasion of lands already owned is offensive to Indigenous people. Leah, who is a proud member of the Worimi Nation, said Australia Day “is meant to be a day that unites everyone”. “We are all Australian regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs, everyone has their own opinion about the date and we need to respect these views,” she said. “We can’t change the past, but we can look to the future and find ways to continue to celebrate our inclusive, multicultural nation together.” Whether you plan to mark Australia Day with flags and snags or sun and surf, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has stressed the importance of celebrating the country’s 40,000 years of indigenous culture.

Council and the Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee provided each participant with $300 to help cover airfares, passport costs, meals and other travel costs.

Help to identify car crash fatality
Marine Rescue Needs Pontoon

IN a bid to improve response times and create a better work environment for volunteers, Marine Rescue is seeking funds to build a pontoon for their vessels at Nelson Bay Marina. Marine Rescue is seeking donations and funding for the multipurpose pontoon. Once completed, the pontoon will be used to store equipment and documentation, conduct briefings and debriefings even in adverse weather. Marine Rescue has met with Scot MacDonald MLC and Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter and Central Coast. Tony O’Donnell Marine Rescues Operations Manager told News Of The Area, “The project is to supply and install a Multipurpose floating facility at
the Rescue Boat dock in Nelson Bay.” The proposal for the pontoon construction will enable Marine Rescue to not only improve rescue vessel response time when lives are at risk, but enhance Marine Rescue’s ability to manage their commercially registered vessels. “We will be able to stow essential safety equipment close to the vessels where it is needed and improve the OH&S conditions for our boat crews, most of whom are retired volunteers.” The design of the pontoon is progressive and will have zero carbon emissions when operating. “The key issue that Marine Rescue Port Stephens faces is a shortfall in funding for the project,” he said. While government funding

POLICE have re-appealed to the community to assist investigators who are trying to identify a man killed in a car crash at Fullerton Cove over the weekend. Emergency services were called to Nelson Bay Road at Fullerton Cove about 9.10pm on Saturday 20 January 2018, after a pedestrian was reportedly struck by a Toyota Camry. Sadly, the man died at the scene. Officers from Port Stephens Hunter Police District established a crime scene and commenced inquiries. The driver, a 19-yearold woman, wasn’t injured but was taken to hospital to undergo mandatory blood and urine testing. As investigations continue, police are still unable to
formally identify the man and are appealing for public assistance to identify him. He’s described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 60s and with balding grey hair. The man was wearing a dark blue jumper, black shorts, along with black socks, thongs and was carrying a shopping bag. The man carried no identification, only a small amount of cash and a receipt from a transaction at a Stockton supermarket at 6pm the previous day (Saturday 20 January 2018). Police will prepare a report outlining the circumstances surrounding the man’s death for the information of the Coroner. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.

suicide several years ago. ‘Reasons To Live One More Day, Every Day,’ includes stories of triumph over mental health, including those from inspirational speaker and childhood cancer survivor Michael Crossland, paraplegic aerial artist Lauren Watson, and domestic violence advocate Sonia Anderson. Author Jas Rawlinson, who lost her father to suicide at age 18 and suffered depression for much of her teenage and early adult life, says she was inspired to create something that would help others realise that they weren’t alone, and that recovery was possible. New DA for Mambo Book Addresses Suicide

THE community continues to fight to have the land sold by the Government returned to the public, however in the meantime the owner of the 6ha parcel of land has lodged another Mambo Wanda Development Application (DA) with Port Stephens Council. Kathy Brown of WetCon told News Of The Area, “On 22 December, the Friday before Christmas, a new DA was submitted for a single dwelling costing approximately $450 000. “The General Manager for Port Stephens Council, Wayne Wallis, informed our group by email and said that the required Species Impact Statement had still not been included.” Members of the public rallied to send objections to the first DA to Council and now this process may have to be recommended for the new DA which has an extended closing submission deadline of 17 February, 2018. “Of course, all the same
reasons still apply for any development to be opposed so perhaps all anyone will need is the new DA number, (16-2017-936-1) for your reworked submission,” she said. Mayor Ryan Palmer told
News Of The Area, “Council will require a species impact statement for flora and fauna; the developer will need to meet all Council requirements, and all information needs to be provided before the application will be considered.”

Addressing the associated parking issues OPINION Dear News Of The Area, Whilst there seems to be a growing consensus on building heights of Nelson Bay CBD of ten (10) storeys, we believe that Port Stephens Council (PSC) should be simultaneously addressing the associated parking issues. PSC should be employing professionals to address future parking problems likely to occur in a busier CBD. However, they appear to think it’s wise to have the community come up with possible solutions. Parking in Nelson Bay should be free, fair and convenient. Demolish the PSC Donald Street EAST Car Park. Use the concrete waste to form an artificial fishing reef (subject to scientific and technical advice re: potential locations). In consultation with industry professionals, PSC to produce a quality DA for a mixed Retail/ Commercial (office)/

destinations. Also, consideration should be given to the requirement for a bus parking bay at the front of any new highrise development, if considered feasible. The village bus could be an electric vehicle ( for quietness and environmental reasons – even possibly driverless as advocated by Cr Steve Tucker!) Nelson Bay could become another Greenwich Village. Located in Manhattan, NYC (home of the skyscraper) this area attracts many artists, artisans and actors. It’s village character is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the USA. Retain the PSC Donald Street WEST Car Park site and use the funds from the sale of the Donald Street East Car Park to build a multistorey car park. This could, for example, have a basement level, with three above ground levels. This centrally located site would form the hub of the overall parking plan. Use of architects to produce an attractive ‘design excellence’ façade is important here. Allowance should be made to ‘future proof’ the site by allowing for extra levels, if required/desired. Depending on available funds, purchase smaller peripheral (satellite) parking sites for ground level parking around the CBD to be serviced by a free CBD bus service. Provide a free, continuous bus service around the CBD linking the various car parks with the most popular

Dear News Of The Area,
I’VE noticed that in recent editions the Bay News Of The Area paper has received some negative views about the resistance to high rise in the CBD. I’d like to point out that it’s not that I object so much about the high rise, although I do think 35 metres is a rather ridiculous height, my main objection is the way council has “mandated” (the word used in the minutes is “endorsed”), without any community consultation at all and, worse than that, miss reported what consensus that was achieved in 2012. On my own accord I dug out the 53 page “strategy” document from the council website to see for myself and discovered the absolute travesty of it and wrote an assessment and sent
it back to council personally, i.e. NOT as a spokesperson for the Tomaree Ratepayers And Residents Association (TRRA). As you know I let off steam through my pencil. I’ll leave the gag as my

Raising awareness for those with Parkinson’s Disease

THE launch of Tomaree Peninsular Parkinson’s Support Group (TPPSG) awareness campaign takes place on Australia Day at Little Beach Park, 9 – 3.30pm. If you or someone you care for has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease this is an ideal
opportunity to meet and connect with others within the local community who are living with Parkinson’s each day. Also, an opportunity to connect with fellow carers who meet independently for a coffee and chat monthly. The day will also see the launch of the much needed fundraising event where
proceeds remain in the local area and assist TPPSG with the purchase of equipment, fulfil club projects and ensure, where necessary, certification is up to date to assist in the delivering of current strategies and programs available. First prize is one week, for six people at Myall’s houseboat holiday, valued at $2,000 on the Tangles boat.

By Marian SAMPSON WE’D like to introduce Maureen Phillpott Unit Controller for the SES Tomaree. As Unit Controller Maureen is one volunteer that is responsible for many things including people, running the operations, and even paying the bills. The unit is situated in the old Corlette Fire Station which they extended with a purchased Olympic Village house to add office and amenities space for the team. Maureen Phillpott told News Of The Area, “I joined because at the time the Tomaree SES only had 11 members, that was back in 2002 after a big storm, the team dealt with 640 jobs, then like now they need more volunteers involved to help our local community.” As Controller Maureen has a drive to see the team well equipped and is looking for help and support to enable them to extend the storage facility. All the modern equipment to meet the needs of the community in times of distress is seeing
a volunteer grant writer for the unit to help make the organisation more able to help those in need. Maureen and her husband had previously volunteered with the Fire Brigade with Maureen in the Ladies Auxiliary, it was changes at the Fire Brigade that saw them both become members of the SES.

WOMEN’S Rugby 7’s is coming to the Bay. Hunter Women’s Rugby Union in collaboration with Hunter Junior Rugby Union to give girls in the Under 15 and Under 17 age groups a dedicated first time club based sevens competition in Term 1 of 2018. Will Scully who is organising the competition told News Of The Area, “The competition is endorsed and supported by the Hawthorne Club, who provide philanthropic support for various rugby campaigns in the Hunter, and NSW Rugby Union.” It is planned that the competition will run over 6 weeks, with a group training round, 4 series rounds and a finals day hosted at grounds across the region on a Friday Night from 9 February. Eight clubs have shown strong interest in participating in the competition including Nelson Bay in both age groups, Hamilton, Easts, Maitland, Merewether Carlton, Lake Macquarie, The Wanderers and Southern Beaches.

Gloucester Rugby Union have shown a willingness to travel the 2 hours each week to play as well. Host grounds for the competition includes the Tomaree Sports Facility. “The competition will allow girls to further their rugby union careers beyond club levels if they so choose, with representative pathways in sevens and fifteens for Hunter, NSW Country and NSW 7’s open to anyone who plays.” While the competition can be used as a step up the ladder for those seeking to further their rugby union careers, it is also for anyone who simply wants to have some fun with their friends as well. The competition demonstrates the continued commitment of Hunter Women’s to the sevens game, where we have had multiple players play for NSW or enter Australian development deals since 2012. The competition will be managed by Will Scully and Kate Gilbert, who is a current player and coach with some assistance from NSW Rugby.
