AQUACULTURE Farming has been conducted all over the world since China’s Tang dynasty in 2500 BC and the Ancient Romans breeding fish in ponds and farming oysters in coastal lagoons. Aquaculture involves cultivating freshwater and saltwater populations under controlled conditions, compared to commercial fishing which is the harvesting of wild fish. Peter and Frances Bender of Huon Aquaculture began farming Salmon in 1986 in the waters that surrounded their farming property at Hideaway Bay, Tasmania. Majorly privately owned, the Huon Aquaculture Group produces over 17,000 tonnes of fresh salmon per year and is recognised globally as being the premium producer of fresh and smoked salmon products. Huon currently employ more than 550 multi skilled staff in most states of Australia. Huon Aquaculture are partnering with the NSW State Government in a project to research the viability and methods

Shark Drum Lines may not make our beaches safer FROM Page 1 to be continually moving so many sharks will die on these drum lines before anybody gets to them. “Sharks are migratory, so my point it is to kill a shark in one place to protect swimmers in that area, when the shark will move to another area the next day, is nothing more than a knee jerk barbaric reaction designed so the government is seen to be seen doing something,” Michael Brown told News Of The Area. “Ignorance and fear labels sharks as mindless killers and nothing could be further from the truth, sharks are drawn into swimming areas by the presence of food,” said Mr Brown. Large sharks have a diet primarily consisting of mammals and tend to follow seals and whales. Smaller sharks up to 3m
follow the thousands of baitfish schools moving along the Australian coastline. Adopting a system that tracks the movement of the sharks food source will allow a compilation of an unprecedented database that will accurately predict when, where and what time the public would be at risk of encountering a feeding shark. New aerial drone technology will allow the individual beaches the opportunity to visually inspect the waters and the information gathered from multiple drones will paint a clear picture of shark activity and allow accurate shark predicting. “Putting it a little clearer, if there are no fish, no whales or seals in the area the chances of encountering a shark are virtually zero,” Michael Brown added. It’s time for this kind of technology to be introduced all over Australia.
Whale caught in lines By Jewell DRURY
A NEW update on the Huon Aquaculture Lease. Footage surfaced on NBN news, Sunday 9 October of a 12m humpback whale caught in fish net lines off Port Stephens. The video was filmed from the deck of Imagine Cruises near Cabbage Tree Island and Providence Bay on Saturday morning, minutes after the whale managed to untangle itself from one of the buoy lines. “In actual fact the whale was caught in one of the mooring lines in the Huon Aquaculture lease and was not a fish trap line,” Imagine Cruises owner Bronny Starling told News Of The Area. ”The video showed the whale when it came over to the boat after untangling itself from the fish farms buoy’s ropes,” Ms Starling said. The vessel Imagine was out early at 7.30 am on Saturday morning on a Dolphin watch cruise, when they first noticed the whale in trouble. “The whale was rolling around clearly entangled in the buoy’s
line, dragging the buoy underwater with it as it rolled,” Bronny Starling added. Another whale was seen circling around the one entangled . Bronny Starling was able to photograph the mammal in distress. “After some time, the whale managed to free itself and both whales swam over to the Imagine Cruise line and gave a wonderful exhibition for all those on board.” Ms Starling was unsure how long the whale was trapped but those on

The lines of the buoys are orange and were apparently designed to be clearly seen by any mammals. The first of the Aquaculture Yellowtail Kingfish farms are to be stocked this week. Not surprisingly the local dolphin and whale watching tourism operators, dive shop operators in Nelson Bay as well as many locals are up in arms. There is 2,137 km of NSW coast line to choose from and tourist operators are at a loss to why Huon and NSW DPI have put a fish farm in the middle of a pristine marine park
migrating highway. No doubt Saturday’s incident will escalate the protest against the Huon and DPI’s Aquaculture Farm at Providence Bay.

q Geoff Bullock is happy to be known these days as “Geoff from the Island”. By Jewell DRURY A SMALL weatherboard cottage on the corner of Marine Drive and Boulder Bay Road, Fingal Bay was the central holiday hub for the Bullock family for many decades.
Beautiful views could be seen looking directly over Fingal Bay with the family having ownership of the little cottage during the 70’s up until the sale of the home in 2005. A duplex now stands on the site where the little
PORT Stephens is home to a range of new recreational service providers following the completion of a recent Expression of Interest (EOI) period to commercially operate on Council owned and managed land. Operators range from surf schools to personal trainers and all were awarded 5 year leases for selected locations around the Port Stephens Local Government Area. As part of the new process, Council wants to ensure that residents can easily identify compliant operators. Contracts and Services Coordinator, Ian Crawford told News Of The Area a new logo has been designed to make it easy for residents to know they’re dealing with a compliant operator. “We have a comprehensive application process so residents can be confident they’re working with the very best service providers in the region. “All of our operators require public liability insurance, risk management plans and the necessary
qualifications to be successful in gaining a lease for a parcel of land. “This is about providing some support to our operators and making these guys easy to recognise,” Mr Crawford said. Currently, there are nine operators who have secured leases for one or multiple locations around Port Stephens. Mr Crawford said that it’s important the community knows that utilising operators outside of the officially listed commercial operators can be a dangerous game. “If an operator is working unlicensed on Council land and you’re injured taking part in their service, any insurance or public liability they may have will be null and void. “The best thing you can do if you’re unsure about a provider, ask to see their paperwork to make sure they’re appropriately insured – you have a right to know,” he said. As part of the recent EOI process, Council reviewed its processes and made significant changes to the existing fee structure.

Geoff Bullock became one of the founders of “Hillsong’s Music Australia” from 1987 to 1995 leaving after eight years to expand his influence in the broader Christian Church through seminars and concerts. As one of Australia’s most prolific Praise and Worship songwriters Geoff recorded more than 20 albums which have impacted hearts all over the world. “I feel incredibly blessed to have been given amazing opportunities through my music,” Geoff told News Of The Area. His songs are sung and recorded by artists worldwide. Geoff is now retired and lives on Scotland Island, a water access only island in Pittwater, NSW and visits Port Stephens regularly. With all his notoriety, Geoff says that he prefers to be known as “Geoff from the Island.” He lives a peaceful life,

When asked about how he feels about his musical success, he answers quite humbly. “It’s a funny thing, my songs are like my children,” Mr Bullock said. “They are more well known than me, I was just privileged to be there at their birth.” Geoff began his first career as a cameraman for the ABC. He has since returned to those roots and enjoys the ebb and flow of creative photography. Looking down the lens of the camera, he has captured Port Stephens beautifully and he has graciously allowed Bay News Of The Area readers a sneak peak.

NELSON Bay Rock & Roll Club has been operating for more than 16 years and will be presenting the 16th Annual Rock & Roll Festival at Nelson Bay Diggers. The festivities will take place Friday 14 October until Sunday 16 October. The three day event will see Rock & Roll dancers from all over the state come to Nelson Bay. Step back in time and appreciate all things vintage and rockabilly during the October long weekend Rock & Roll Festival. The Nelson Bay Diggers auditorium will be decked out in rockabilly style, with
Friday night dancing. Doors will open at 6pm. There will be a Muscle Car show starting at 10am, Saturday 15 October with Free entry. Classic American and Australian cars will be on display. There will be a teacher workshop conducted from 2-4pm where “partner dancing” will be taught for a small fee. Saturday night the dancing continues from 6pm in the Auditorium. “A special wow factor to the festival is a special display by a professional group of Sydney dancers,” Keith Barnard, President of The Nelson Bay Rock & Roll Club

Food Care help at lean times SALAMANDER Bay Food Care at the Rock Church has been in operation for 15 years. Assistant Pastors Janelle and Ivan Foster manage the team of volunteers who assist families and individuals who are on a low income. Food Care comes under the banner of Global Care and is designed to help people in need whose
incomes aren’t enough to sustain them. Food Care is open every Wednesday from 11am to 1pm. Bread, fruit and vegetables are all free and all grocery items are heavily discounted. BAY Residents celebrated the 20th Anniversary of White Balloon Day by taking part in Australia’s Biggest Child Protection Challenge. White Balloon Day is Bravehearts’ key awareness campaign supported by communities across Australia to help educate, empower and protect Aussie kids from child sexual assault. Bravehearts is established with a vision to prevent child sexual assault in our society. 59,000 children each year are sexually assaulted in Australia - one child every two hours in our country. The official White Balloon Day is 9 September. The Port Stephens community took action on 10 -11 September. The events in the bay were initiated and organised by The Change Maker Tribe – a new organization purposely working towards a brighter world for all funding national and global projects. Founder Tara Scott said, “These events were about raising awareness.” Tara said, “One in five
children in Australia are sexually assaulted by their 18th Birthday - I wholeheartedly believe in Bravehearts vision and mission.” “We need to stand together to protect our children, I believe we live in a country that has the resources to change this if we speak up and break the silence together.” Fingal Bay Park Run had over 50 participants who walked or ran in the rain wearing white holding white balloons on Saturday 10 September. On Sunday 11 September, families gathered at the bottom of Mt Tomaree, collected their balloons and walked together to the top of our iconic mountain. Ms Scott said, “It was inspirational to see parents and children walk empowered with the intention of protecting all children from sexual assault.” Salamander Bay resident and mother of two Harriet Baily-Hewitt when asked why she decided to take part said, “Sadly nobody is aware how

THE Shoal Bay Community Association has organized the installation of three bicycle racks on the Shoal Bay foreshore. The racks, each capable of holding ten bikes, have been positioned to benefit both visitors and residents. To cater for those using the shopping precinct a rack has been installed in front of Aura Apartments and Shoal Bay’s central beach near the main public toilets. Another has been located next to the boat ramp to service the eastern end of the beach and the many visitors accessing Marrungbangbaa

RUGBY League identity Jack Gibson’s statement that ‘waiting for Cronulla to win the premiership was like leaving the porch lamp on for missing Prime Minister Harold Holt’ has become the running joke for some time in the Cronulla Sutherland Shire. The porch lights are now being turned off every night after the Cronulla Sharks brought home the Premiership Trophy for the first time ever in the Clubs history of 50 years. Cronulla played Melbourne Storm in the Rugby League Grand Final with a well earned nail biting win of 8- 12 after a mere penalty goal separated the two teams through the final seconds of the game. The fulltime siren gave a shout of relief mixed with
sheer elation as the players, coaches and fans realised they had won the premiership. Nelson Bay local Dean Carney was ecstatic as he watched the game with friends and family at Mavericks, D’albora Marina. Dean, originally from Wollongong was a former forward turned winger and had an enigmatic football career during the 80’s. “It’s the most exciting thing that could happen to the club,” Dean Carney told News Of The Area. “Cronulla’s win is good for the town, the fans and good for the league,” Dean said. Dean Carney’s list of achievements include playing for the Cronulla- Sutherland Sharks from 1983-1986, the Illawarra Steelers 19871988 and our own Newcastle Knights in 1989. It is a Statewide run activity designed to encourage individuals and families to get out in the fresh air and fish. In conjunction with the day, a special event called ‘Taylors Beach Family Fish Out’ is being organised by the Anna Bay Tavern Fishing Club. and will culminate with a presentation at 3pm. There will be two fishing clinics being conducted on the day, one for women and one for the children. The four boys started their journey to the State finals when they competed at the local school sports carnival, then went on to compete at Zone, which encompasses all areas in Port Stephens. Following on this stage, they competed at the Regional competition which comprised of the Hunter area. As they were successful at all of these events, they were granted entry to the state level. If they win at the state competition, they will then quality for the National competition. Rick Sarmias, father to one of the boys and coach of the group told News Of The Area of the passion his son has shown through this competition, “Anything to do with sport and he will do it - Ian is mad on all sport and loves the skate park.”

Rotary golf for charity THIS year was the 25th Anniversary of the Rotary Club’s Charity Golf Day. Over the years the club has raised over $250,000 with these golf days. All of this money has been returned to the local Community through various projects, including Community Transport, Youth Health, Surf Lifesaving, PCYC and other community and health projects. This year the principle beneficiary will be a project to extend the existing Nelson
Bay Rotary Club Exercise/ FitnessTrail, installed along the foreshore from Conroy Park to Dutchies Beach, through a new Circuit that will link Victoria Parade, Nelson Bay through Little Beach to Shoal Bay. The equipment in this new Circuit, will feature outdoor, multi-gym equipment, rather than the static equipment adopted for the initial stage of the trail opened in December 2015.
