“I don’t know how nobody was hurt in all this,” said eyewitness Brandy Ireland. A little after 3 p.m. a transport hauling a full load of stone careened through the intersection of Mountain and Elm clipping two

cars, an SUV and broadsiding a pickup truck. “I heard the first crash and looked down the road to see the transport coming,” said Ireland, who was sitting on the rocks at the corner of Mountain and Main

Street at the time. “The transport pushed the pickup all the way down the road until it got pinned at the church. It’s a miracle the lady in the truck was not seriously hurt.” See TRUCK, Page 2

One motorist had to wait for Grimsby firefighters to pry open the driver’s side door to get her free from her vehicle. While there was a great sense of relief at the scene with minor injuries resulting, there was considerable anger. “It’s time to act. The carnage at this accident was gut-wrenching and frightening. Let’s do something immediately such as closing the road to trucks until a better answer is found,” said Kurt Whitnell, who saw everything first-hand. “We need to put saving lives and public safety ahead of political and bureaucratic processes, and just fix this. This requires real leadership across jurisdictions and party lines. Let’s just get it done.” The Ministry of Transportation and Niagara Regional Police investigation continues.

Ruck Walk makes stop in Smithville

The annual Ruck Walk strode through the streets of Smithville last Thursday with a stop at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 393 along the way. The walk is part of the Road to Recovery event which covers 2kms for every military, police, firefighter, and paramedic lost the year before. Ruck walkers started in Hamilton and made their way to Niagara Falls and Port Colborne before wrapping up in Dunnville on Sunday. Donations were accepted for “Operation Leave the Streets Behind”, a homeless veteran support initiative supported by the Royal Canadian Legion.

Ruck Walk participants, front L to R, Noel Gracie, Lino Di Julio and Dave Merriott, were received by a combined Colour Party which included members of Smithville Legion Branch 393, Grimsby Legion Branch 127 and Beamsville Legion Branch 612 - as well as the Grimsby Pipe Band - on Thursday evening, just as rain set in. There is also a ton of shows and exhibits with all kinds of displays, he said. “Livestock, rabbit shows and event a small horse show are on the roster this year. You can see we are starting to settle in here,” noted Witteveen, pointing out this is the

first year at the new agriculture society grounds on Mud Street when the facility is fully ready. “We saw it with Poultryfest too, this is a great place for an event like the fair and we’re expecting big things this year. It’s exciting to see it come together.” “We are still fine tuning and will continue to do so, but things are in great shape.” Another addition will be a Powder Puff Derby in between the six- and 8-cylinder derbies on Sunday night. That starts at 4 p.m. Friday night’s 4-cylinder demo derby goes at 7 p.m.

West Niagara Fair on Saturday, Sept. 10, that’s where. A packed lineup is in store for fairgoers starting when the gates open on 9 a.m. A hightlight of the afternoon will be a cooking demo by “Two Fairly Fat Guys”, who will strut

their stuff from 1-4 p.m. in the community hall, sponsored by Niagara Pork Producers. “Saturday is family day and we have a ton on the go,” said Albert Witteveen, West Niagara Agricultural Society’s general manager. The midway runs Thursday, 4-9 p.m.; Friday, 3-9 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m., and; Sunday, 11 a.m. -9 p.m. Admission is $10 adults, $5 children 6-12, children

5 and under free at all times. There are weekend passes available: $25 adults, $10 children.

The Metelsky girls, Sophie and Maya, did their Poppa proud Saturday by taking a lemon of a situation (the passing of their grandfather Steve, who was also a long-time and very active member of the Beamsville Lions Club) and making lemonade out of it by hosting a lemonade stand at their Grimsby home in support of McNally House Hospice. The girls raised $70, which was matched by their father, Steve Jr., for a total of $140. Great work girls! Your Poppa was a great guy who did a ton of work in the community he loved.

Does someone have to die to get attention? When something is really bugging me, I leave it for absolute last on my deadline to-do list. Definitely not best for last, in this case, but I try to allow for some separation from whatever happened, or something I saw or heard, to allow for reasoned thought. I know as I sit here and write this late in the day on Tuesday afternoon, I will be good and cheesed off just like the dozens of citizens who were downright irate at the scene of last week’s potentially horrific, but lucky no injuries, multivehicle traffic accident on Mountain Street in Grimsby. Now I only go back on this to 1995, but I recall covering the Beamsville accident which claimed the life of a little girl. I recall covering the dump truck accident on Mountain in Grimsby when the driver of brakeless rig tried to flee the cab only to be killed after getting knocked back under the wheels of his own vehicle. The truck continued on hitting rock and trees with no further injury. Then there have been the multitude of accidents such as - almost two years ago to the day of Friday when the truck and boat of Grimsby residents heading to their cottage was sideswiped at the Mountain and Elm intersection by another truck that could not slow down. Then you have your drive-thru at Fisher Stevenson Boehm Insurance...and a host of others. The burning question is, Why?! Why has nothing been done.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT Fact is, Niagara Region in their infinite and molasseslike ways are plodding through a process that one day - maybe 15-20 years down the road - will result in something that resembles a mountain access for truck traffic. There were people storming the sidewalk Friday afternoon, genuinely shaken and irate at the situation which was being played out. This was not a fake accident scene at one of our local high schools. This was a truck, no brakes or at least brakes which were non-effective, bouncing off cars like a pinball until stopping on St. Johns front yard. There was a study back in 1997 done jointly with Niagara and HamiltonWentworth. Big shock. Anything from that was put on hold pending results from another entirely different study. A mere 14 years later, in 2011, Niagara’s public works committee opted to reopen the escarpment crossing can of worms. It wasn’t until 2014 the committee revised the terms of reference to allow for short- and long-term projects to deal with the issue. Well, that was two years

ago, and I sure don’t see anything tangible when it comes to truck traffic relief in either Grimsby or Beamsville. While Grimsby’s situation is traffic and safety issues, Beamsville’s is no less dangerous and there is also the serious detriment to commerce in the core due to the plethora of vehicles rumbling through there. And I know of what I speak as a resident of the main intersection in Beamsville for several years. It is brutal there. While there is little doubt Victoria Avenue has long been the best-suited truck route, until the Bartlett Road exit in Grimsby is pushed through as it was intended 40 years ago, there seems to be reluctance to temporarily transfer all truck traffic to Victoria. Now, I don’t wish any ill will on the good people of Victoria Avenue, but I would ask even them, would you rather have some inconvenience for a decade or so, or have more people die in Grimsby or Beamsville while the escarpment crossing clock ticks on? And I am not saying Victoria is perfect, just that is the lesser of other evils. Something has to be done short term to get the trucks out of the core areas of Grimsby and Beamsville. That’s it. End of story. Niagara Region - and don’t think the provincial government cannot help this one out too - cannot be allowed to twiddle its thumbs with more years of study. If we need to block streets and get attention, let’s do it!

Of those, 36% are children or youth. We are working to change the statistics on hunger with Hunger Awareness Week (HAW). Here in Grimsby, more than 3,763 individuals needing support have come to The

Grimsby Benevolent Food Bank for assistance in 2016. But we can change this. During HAW, Sept. 19-23, we are drawing the line on hunger and we encourage Canadians to engage. We hope that people will participate by going to: hungerawarenessweek.ca and sharing how they would draw the line on hunger in 2016. We can work to make a difference for the individuals

in Grimsby who turn to our food bank for support each month. By learning about hunger, we can all change the way we think about hunger and activate the changes needed to reduce it.
