Most of the visitors questioned the need for a Livingston Avenue extension when improvements are needed to Hwy. 8. “They were also very pleased to come out and see the significance of this woodlot,” said Bruce Mackenzie, who is helping lead the charge to stop the extension. “We were really pleased with the suport. It was beyond

our expectations.” More than 600 signatures are now on the petition which will be presented to Niagara Region. It is the region that is proposing the extension. The next step in the effort to keep the woodlot intact is to contact Niagara Region to find out if a date has been set for the public consultation. “The region has not released the date yet,” said Mackenzie. The open house included a barbecue courtesy of M&M Meats in Grimsby. It raised $710 for FORT.

Vineland CIP takes next step at Lincoln Council By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The overhauls of Lincnoln’s commercial cores took another step forward with the Town’s Planning Committee putting its stamp of approval on the next step of a Community Improvement Plan for Vineland at its meeting Monday night. That step was to receive a report detailing an overview of the program and to have

staff prepared to compile a detailed report once all supporting agencies have had an opportunity to provide input. “We put the Beamsville CIP in place in 2011. It has encouraged many businesses to make substantive changes to the facades of their buildings, making the downtown area look and feel upbeat,” said Ald. Rob Foster, chair of Lincoln’s Planning Committee.

“We have been very pleased to receive three or four grant requests per year since we’ve put this in place, and from my discussion with business owners, they are very pleased with the program.” The work in Vineland is expected to have a major impact on the commercial core as work will go far beyond facade improvements, noted Mayor Bill Hodgson. “The time is right to ad-

dress issues in Vineland because a complete reconstruction of King Street including all new sidewalks, curbs, street hardware, possible burying of overhead wires, etc., is pending. We want to have a funded program in place to support the kind of new investment that a rebuilt CBD (commercial business district) in Vineland will attract,” said Mayor Hodgson. See CIP, Page 2

move toward successful urban design which supports vibrant and walkable CBDs,” said Mayor Hodgson. Ward 3 Coun. Dave Thompson said council had prioritized Vineland even when Beamsville’s project was getting underway years ago. Part of that priority is heeding concerns of businesses already in

place while looking to grow the commercial core, he said. “A number of us on council are very concerned about the parking situation in front of the current businesses which are the solid business foundation of the village – Vineland Hardware, Foodland, Hopkins Pharmacy and UPI,” Thompson said.

So I open up my morning paper to the sports section to see how Philadelphia Flyers’ captain Claude Giroux is being greeted by teammates at training camp after being arrested in Ottawa at a bar on Canada Day for “repeatedly grabbing the buttocks of a male police officer.” (I hope you’re sitting down for this one – police say “alcohol may have been involved!!!”) Instead, I spot a photograph of a very elderly lady in a track suit who appears to be competing in a pole vaulting event!?! The mental image of that woman sprinting down the track, jamming that pole into a metal slot and then slingshotting herself up and over a bar high above her head made me cringe. My first thought was that she must be on the same kind of performance program made famous by Ben Johnson. Then I double-checked the article to make sure it was a genuine sports story and not an ad for hip replacement surgery. Florence Storch, 101 years old of Sherwood Park, Alberta is the oldest competitor in the over-55 javelin throwing event and indeed the oldest participant in the entire tournament. That six-foot pole balance on her shoulder was a spear. Centenarian Florence Storch is a spearchucker not a pole vaulter. Wisely, ice climbing, volcano surfing, wingsuit flying

and pole vaulting are events not sanctioned by the Canada 55-Plus Games. These senior events are meant to be inspiring, not insane. Florence was born in 1913 when throwing spears involved wild African animals who became highly vengeful when you missed with your toss. Back then you could pretty much toss a coin to predict who, the thrower or the runner, would become dinner. Florence got into her sport innocently enough when while helping organize the seniors’ games she noticed nobody had signed up for the javelin. So she put her name down. She was a bust that first year so she got the local high school athletic coach to set up a training program for her. After a few years of practise she started winning medals and has dominated the sport in her age bracket ever since. Unlike a red wine with a lot of tannins, the years are not helping Florence become better. While once she took a run at the starting line before releasing her toss, she now throws from a standing position. As the javelin leaves her right hand, her left hand latches on to the walker to steady herself. And while the instrument remains an aluminum shaft that is about six feet in length, Florence has shrunk to below five feet. Also Florence admits her eyesight

WILLIAM THOMAS isn’t what it used to be which has caused a shortage of volunteers who go out onto the pitch to measure throwing distances. All it takes is one guy coming into the clubhouse with a spear in his back and all the other volunteers start phoning in sick. Although Florence Storch may not be an athlete in her prime, she’ got game. A collection of gold medals underscores this woman’s determination to go out year after year and slay the real enemy with a spear … aging. “You’ve got to make up your mind and I’ve made up mine – I’m going to get the gold.” Memo to kids – there it is, the secret to a great career. First try things, lots of things until you find the one that kind of fits. Then get serious, then get better and soon you’ll be going for the gold. Later in life when you’re down and disappointed and find yourself bent over picking up the pieces of your chosen career, imagine Florence Storch standing behind you about to unleash that spear. And yeah, she’s got the pointy end at the front. If that doesn’t get you up and running, nothing will.

Another “exceptional” West Niagara Fair: Capell

Although there were a few bumps in the road, this year’s edition of the West Niagara Fair was “exceptional,” said Stephen Capell, fair board president. “Attendance was definitely what we were hoping for,” said Capell. Poor weather impacted attendance Thursday and Friday but numbers were right back up for Saturday and Sunday. The entertainment portion of the Friday

night was cancelled just minutes into the performance due to the thunder storm, which was unfortunate, said Capell. There was lots of positive comments about the changes to the fair such as the layout inside the arena and the larger midway. As for next year, Capell says he “can finally see the light at the end of the process tunnel” and looks forward to being at the new fairgrounds.

Musical evening planned Enjoy an evening of giving thanks through music. A Thanksgiving Variety Night Concert is being planned for Sunday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 10 Mountain St. Grimsby. The event will bring together local Christian musicians. Take a pie in the face to help fund a cure Would you take a pie in the face to save the life of a child? Research into childhood cancers is seriously lagging in Canada and a Smithville family who has experienced the trauma of having a child with cancer are doing all they can to raise awareness and funds. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and money is being raised to support the Gold Ribbon Campaign. “There are many ways people are getting involved in the awareness campaign; one of which is the Whipping Childhood Cancer challenge,” says Melissa LeBlanc. “Essentially you take a pie to the face, and make a $7 donation to childhood cancer research. You also nominate seven others and they have 46 hours to complete the challenge.” LeBlanc would love to see people making videos of themselves being pied and posting them on social media in the same way the ice bucket challenge was done in support of funds for ALS. The numbers seven and 46 are significant in this challenge: seven represents the num-

ber of children who die every day from childhood cancer. The number 46 represents the number of children diagnosed every day. LeBlanc’s nephew Gaven Weyers, now three, was diagnosed with ATRT brain cancer in December 2011 at the tender age of six months, a diagnosis that turned his family’s world upside-down. “People really don’t understand what it is like until it happens to them,” says LeBlanc. The current survival rate for this cancer is 10 per cent. Gaven was treated at McMaster Children’s Hospital and Toronto Sick Kids. He had three rounds of high dose chemotherapy, three stem cell transplants and then 28 rounds of radiation. He also initially had two brain surgeries, one to relieve the pressure on his brain and the second to remove the tumour, which was successful. He is now two years post-treatment and has been in remission. “He is actually really good at the moment. Many, too many kids, within our community are battling cancer and I know the support would be greatly appreciated.”

It’s a long way to Tipperary, memories of WWI The Grimsby Historical Society begins another season with its popular homemade pie event. So bake a pie, bring a pie and taste many pies. This year marks a significant anniversary – the beginning of WWI. Over the next four years there will be ample opportunity to discuss the events that led up to the conflict and the sub-

sequent struggles. Music plays a large part in war and there will be music at this first meeting of the season. There are the songs that soldiers adopted for marching off to war, not knowing what lay ahead. The meeting will take place Wednesday, Sept. 17 at St. Andrew’s Parish Hall. Notice of Public Information Centre No. 2 Niagara Escarpment Crossing Study Class Environmental Assessment The Study The Region of Niagara has re-opened a Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) to evaluate truck route alternatives across the Niagara Escarpment. The purpose of this study is to review the Class EA completed in 1997 for a new or improved escarpment crossing of the area to accommodate commercial traffic, while minimizing negative impacts to residents and motorists. The project team used the existing data from the 1997 study and updated it where necessary. This information was used to complete the identification and screening of the planning alternatives.

The Process The study was initiated as a Schedule ‘C’ project in accordance with the Municipal Class EA document (October 2000, as amended in 2011). As a result of input received from agencies, stakeholders and the public, the project team found that no single solution will fully address the problem statement. Based on this finding, the Regional Public Works Committee approved a revised Terms of Reference that provides for a Master Plan approach, including the completion of Phases 1 and 2 of the Class EA process. This approach includes the identification of short-term and long-term projects to address the original problem statement. At the conclusion of the study, Phases 1 and 2 will be documented in a Master Plan report. Schedule A and A+ projects will proceed to implementation and more detailed work will be completed for Schedule ‘B’ and ‘C’ projects. Public Information Centre #2 Public consultation is a key component of this study. The purpose of the PIC is to present the findings, including the identification of both the short-term and long-term projects identified as part of the Master Plan approach and to solicit public input. Grimsby officials amped up about new core charging stations Two, 100-amp charging stations have officially been opened and are ready for action after a launch ceremony Monday morning. The stations, located in the public parking lot on Elm Street next to the LCBO, are the highest A/C rate chargers possible, so wait times are reduced for those looking to power up their vehicles. â€œGiven that these charge stations were determined to be best located within the central retail shopping and dining area

of the town, it made perfect sense for us to match faster chargers that deliver a meaningful range within a one- to twohour period,â€? said DIA chair Tony Quirk. While the Town is paying for one charger, Jaff Stevenson and his wife Cindy have donated the other, which Jaff won in the 2013 E-Mazing Race. Grimsby Power covered installation costs and the Town of Grimsby will cover power charges for one year, then it will be pay-per-use.

Marster’s Memorial Award

Grimsby Minor Hockey Association presented its 2014 PostSecondary School Scholarships recently. As well, the Nathan Marster’s Memorial Scholarship was also presented to Isaac Seabrook. GMHA President Blair Gillis made the presentation.

Parking, parking, parking Facades, sidewalks, hydro lines – all are very nice to see tidied up when Community Improvement Plans are implemented. All are key components to successful revitalization formulae. None is more important than parking. No matter what the community, large or small, or what other services/ amentities surround it. Lincoln has had work underway in Beamsville for years and it is coming along. Vineland, which has been simmering on back burners for about three years but is still a priority is now working its way to the forefront. A multi-prong approach is great, but expanding and enhancing parking is crucial to the long-term success of any program. Look no further than Grimsby as an example. Years of negotiating culminated in a great parking expansion on the north side of the Grimsby core. This additional space is part of the reason the Grimsby Farmers Market is so successful. People know they can find parking. It is a simple formula. Beamsville cries out for more parking. This must be a priority. M.W.

No excuses here, I should have caught that copy for Tony Macri’s new diner did not have the address in the bottom of ad. The phone started ringing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday and kept on ringing til noon.

of same, is not in my top 10 of concerns. That error was just more proof of that. ••••••• You know it is fall when... I got a call from Jeff Dancer of the Grimsby Fire Department this week. He was wanting to get planning in place for the firefighters food drive conducted in conjunction with their float in the annual Santa Claus Parade, this year to be held on Saturday, Dec. 6. You could say, “But that is three months away” and let it be, but next thing you know it would be here. Glad he jogged my memory. We will get to the promotion and details for that in the coming weeks. ****** I, too, must offer my thanks to Stephen Capell and his band of merry makers, aka the West NIagara Fair board of directors. Everybody knows these volunteers put in countless hours to make a huge event come off over four days. The board has had a lot on its mind with the new Mud Street location still working through red tape. So when it came to promotion of the fair and with their well nearly dry, partnering was the way to go. They needed a full-page ad and I was looking to get kids to the fair who would likely not be able to go. Juggle some value, yadda yadda, kids and parents from Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln all got admission and midway ride passes. Big smiles, all are happy. And that, ladies and germs, is how it should go.

Grimsby Festival of Art shines in new location

It was a huge success. That was the proclamation by Drew Dulmage, Grimsby Rotarian and Grimsby Festival of Art organizing committee member. “The people of Grimsby and the surrounding communities just made it fabulous,” said Dulmage of the first ever two-day festival. The festival was held at Blessed Trinity Seconday School for the first time in its 48-year history. “We had more than 2,000 visitors over the weekend,” said Dulmage. “We also had rave reviews from the vendors,” said Dulmage. “They couldn’t believe all the help they got.” The event is a fundraiser for Rotary’s many charitable groups and Community Living, Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln.
