Up Front Doors Open in Grimsby this weekend Grimsby Historical Society’s Archives, located in the Carnegie building at Ontario and Adelaide streets, will have their 2016 vintage streetscape calendars on sale this weekend as part of the Doors Open event. A host of Grimsby businesses and organizations will participate in the event from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Main Street in the core will be closed for a classic car show and Lord of the Wings contest. There will be lots of live music, too.
Five decades of community service Grimsby Benevolent Fund turns 50
By Mike Williscraft NewsNow If one speaks with anyone from the Grimsby Benevolent Fund – staff, volunteers, customers or clients – one thing is certain: none will be at a loss for great stories to tell. This Saturday, GBF marks its 50th anniversary with an open house at its 40 Elm Street location from noon to 4 p.m. It is important to note the address because, if you’ve been around for a while you might go to one of its previous nine locations around town such as 80 Main St. W., or John Street, the South Service Road
or 21 Main St. E. just to name a few. What started out as an effort by founder Mike Barretto to coordinate several organizations which were duplicating the provision of Christmas hampers in the early 1960s, soon took on a life of its own. “That’s all it was at the start, to coordinate the hampers,” recalled Grace Roberts, who was one of the original volunteers who worked side by side with Barretto from the start. “Mike was involved with St. Vincent de Paul then and the grocery stores,
Legion and churches were all doing Christmas hampers, so he thought it would be a good idea to coordinate that. We started a registry and the sorting was done at the Legion, but we quickly outgrew that.” As someone who saw the GBF grow from a hamper program to a multi-pronged social service safety net, Roberts said it was drive, determination and energy of Barretto which made it all happen. “Mike was a leader, pure and simple. He worked very hard and he got people involved, even his own family.” GBF executive director Stacy Elia said See GBF, Page 2

The number one trait that made it all go, though, said Roberts, “He was always so positive. There was nothing that could not be done. Grimsby’s Terry Fox Run generates over $26,000 Grimsby’s 2015 edition of the Terry Fox Run had its ups and downs, but raised a good chunk of funds for cancer research. Great day to be a firefighter Grimsby firehall busy place for Sunday open house event More than 1,000 mom’s, dad’s, kids, grandparents and great grandparents attended Grimsby Fire Department’s annual open house this past Sunday. There were many static and interactive stations focusing on all aspects of fire safety. “Kids got a chance to use a fire hose, practice their fire escape and make a real 9-1-1 call. There was face painting and the always popular ‘balloon lady’. There was Sparky, a jumpy castle, and everyone had a chance to see all of the trucks and equipment,” said Chief Mike Cain. Smithville Terry Fox Run nets nearly $7K Smithville’s Terry Fox Run enjoyed its best returns ever on Sunday raising more than $6,800. “It was such a sprited day,” said organizer Karen Peto. “We raised $1,700 more than last year. It really was a showcase of the magic that comes from a Terry Fox event. It is a very moving experience to see new participants coming out and making this part of their family’s traditions.” “We have a great core of volunteers that execute this event wonderfully. By Skip Gilham For NewsNow The freighter Charlot made only a one-way trip into the Great Lakes. What had sailed as Charlot was up bound in the mid-1920s for its only trip inland having already been reduced to scrap metal. As such, it was carried in the holds of barges. These barges and their cargo were headed to River Rouge, MI for recycling into new automobiles for Henry Ford. Mr. Ford had purchased a number of similar ships, too large for the old canal system, and they were broken up at U.S. East Coast locations. The steel was then loaded into smaller ships Ford had also bought for scrap. These were towed to his steel plant at River Rouge where all were melted down. Charlot had been built by the Submarine Boat Co. at Newark, New Jersey. The 102.3 metre long vessel was ordered by the U.S. Shipping Board but it was not completed until March 27, 1919. By then the war was over. It hit an iceberg enroute from Philadelphia to Germany in June 1921. There is no record of it sailing after that.

For anyone who met Grimsby Benevolent Fund founder Mike Barretto, it would have taken all of about two seconds to come under his spell. His enthusiasm, drive and can-do attitude was infectious. Today, when one walks into the GBF retail store, Mike’s photo adorns the wall near the entrance/exit – a suitable place of profile for the man who made it all happen. Being part of the West Niagara scene for 20 years, I have seen the place change immensenly. Seeing things through the eyes of Grace Roberts, who has been around from the start, is unimaginable. From Christmas hampers to a full food bank to clothing to furniture and nine location changes along the way? Remarkable! Aside from the massive change in the size and scope of the retail component in a very short time, the level and variety of aid is beyond comprehensive and that is thanks to the massive volunteer base and ongoing efforts of a solid board of directors and staff all dedicated to perpetuating the vision of one MIke Barretto. From Page 11 “We were able to give her matching party hats for the girls, little gifts bags, small touches really, but that is what it’s all about,” said Elia. “The excitement on that mom’s face.... It was priceless. She never thought anything like that would be possible and it worked out great.” It is the growth of the retail component of the operation which has allowed the organization to dream outside the box and go beyond helping with purely food and clothes.
“We can do things now that were unimaginable a short time ago,” said Elia. “We’re able to help seniors get dentures repaired. We could never have done that before. We get to think outside the box when it comes to helping others.” And because of that, the clients who drop by GBF’s Elm Street location have also changed. “We would have people stick their heads in the door and ask if you had to be unemployed to shop in the store,” said Thorp. “Those days are

GBF wants you to think “inside” the box The box, generally, is large enough to hold four grocery bags. “You can also pick a room in the house and get things appropriate for that,” added Elia. “The whole idea is to have fun with it.” The challenge is extended to individuals, sports teams, churches and clubs, card groups, anyone, really. “People would be surprised at what seemingly little item could have such a large impact. After 20 years of working in social service with individuals that were struggling with many different things I thought I was understanding and compassionate to their struggles and needs, but I was wrong. three months. My children were amazing and so resilient. I cancelled our cable and internet when the grocery shopping was reduced and minimal at best, but the breaking point was our energy bills and rent. When I called the service and asked for help with a payment plan they told me about Grimsby Benevolent Fund and how they may be able to help. I was shocked. How could I be one of my clients that I would refer for social services? How did this happen? I had truly reached the bottom. I was staying at the hospital during the week and home on some weekends to see my son who was staying with friends (and at home) and always telling me he was fine and “don’t worry Mom, just get better”. When I would come home and the
fridge and cupboards were bare, I knew I couldn’t wait. We needed help. I called GBF and spoke to Michelle. All the years of people coming to see me at my job and thanking me with tears and genuine gratefulness, I suddenly understood. Michelle listened, understood, and was a true hero in our lives. Both my children have volunteered at GBF thru school and I thought I knew what it was all about. Clearly I had no idea. The support I received and compassion within the staff was nothing short of spectacular. I will forever be grateful and thankful that in our beautiful community we have this beacon of hope for EVERYONE. Help and need comes from all different places and people. I was fortunate to have found GBF.

Volunteers power the GBF program The lifeblood of any organization is its volunteers and the Grimsby Benevolent Fund has enjoyed the support of countless helpers over its 50 years. For Jill Van Biesbrouck, who has been on the scene for 15 years, volunteering for GBF is second nature to her. “I’m a volunteer. it’s what I do,” said Van Biesbrouck. “it is a such a good feeling to now you are helping people out in some small way. it’s nice to make a difference.” For Glenda Neil, the feeling is mutual.
She has been involved for six years. Neil appreciates the fact that the volunteers are listened to, so new ideas can be worked through and implemented.

“We’re tried a lot of things, like $2 goodie bags.. There is a lot more than $2 value in there, but that worked well,” said Neil, who noted that feature will may make a return before Christmas. “For volunteers, what I like is you can find something you like and get involved there. I trusted my partner of five years and put all I had into the purchase of a new R.V. Needless to say he’s gone and so is my share of the R.V. I had no idea what I was going to do. Lunch Ladies
The Lunch Ladies group, which meets once per month and contributes $5 per person, started in 1978 with six and has expanded to as many as 14 members. They have donated to such groups as The Fort, women’s groups, Lupus research, Guide Dogs and more. Eariier this month they donated $1,800 to Big Brohers Big Sisters. Lions food drive brings home the bacon & more When a food drive generates enough contributions for nearly 40,000 meals it is a huge success. “There was incredible support from community volunteers who were participating as individuals or part of a collective. It would be impossible for us to have a successful undertaking without the involvement of our vested community,” said Community Care of West Niagara’s Carole Fuhrer, noting more than 29,000 lbs of food was donated. Williamson, Terence John
A beloved husband, father and friend, Terence John Williamson, passed peacefully at home, on Monday, September 14, 2015. He will be greatly missed by his wife Margaret, three sons, Sean, Neil (Alison) and Lee and by all his family and friends. Volunteer time appreciated What a week in West Niagara! It is very unusual to have two major events on the social schedule in one weekend, so when the stars aligned for three to take place over Saturday-Sunday it made West Niagara a hoppin’ place. Beamsville and Jordan Lions Clubs deserve a mountain of praise for bringing in nearly 30,000 lbs of food in their annual fall food drive for Community Care of West Niagara. The Lions, along with scores of volunteers gathered, sorted and stored all that food on Saturday. Sunday, Terry Fox Runs were staged both in Grimsby and Smithville wrapping up just in time for Grimsby Fire Department to draw more than 1,000 people to Station One for its annual open house. For different reasons, each of those events add stitches to the solid community fabric which makes this area such a great place to live. The efforts of all involved are appreciated. M.W.
Teachers need support, not more money Not to belabour my point in the editorial last week regarding the need for serious fiscal adjustment on the part of the provincial government in dealing with ALL public sector employees, one point needs to be reiterated. The need for an across the board wage rollback is not a teacher-only solution. It is a top-to-bottom solution. That is simply a reality of today’s economy and those employed in the private sector should not be buffered because they have an important public service or children to use as a shield. Everybody wants what’s best for the kids. That is the leverage unions have employed for decades to get more and more and more. At my job previous to this I was handed two pay reductions, neither with my approval and told I had options if I didn’t like it...the door. That is reality, not meant as a sleight in any way. I did have a choice and I stayed. What really makes me cringe is the sentiment that teachers just want a fair wage. Absolutely, I get that. So if you want more on the wage end, let’s get that done and we can save the 5 per cent needed (was my suggestion last week) on the back end by trimming benefits or the major retirement packages. Again, this would be for ALL public sector employees, not just teachers. That said, I do want to move on because last week I ran out of space to get to my defence of teachers.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT This last year I have heard a lot of stories and it really frustrates me that I haven’t been able to do anything about it yet, but I will, and that is solely because of the model of a small, independent newspaper. Important stories can sit around for a couple of months simply because I cannot get to them. The state of schools as far as student behaviour and what is expected of teachers is at an all-time high on the weirdness scale. I spent hours talking to teachers from different schools about serious incidents which have occurred in their schools. These days, because the rules and what is allowed to happen to the students has changed so drastically, little of no repercussions exist in many cases and that continues to compromise every teachers’ psyche and ability to do their job. Grimsby Secondary School...yikes! One student urinating on another in a hallway during an event, another having a concealed knife at school or perhaps the student caught dealing drugs may grab your attention. The common thread, none received a
suspension. I will say, with the drug dealing incident, police were called and there was a conscious decision not to proceed with any criminal charges, so I do trust the police to make a proper decision and realize the impact on a person’s life if something like that were to proceed would not be the way to go with the individual involved, who was a minor. But the point is, all school boards have taken a direction of not failing kids anymore, right from elementary school on up. We see kids come in to pick up carrier cheques who cannot even sign their name – they don’t teach cursive anymore. And don’t get me started on no spelling class anymore. Everything is typed. That is downright shocking and sad. Teachers do need a better support system and there needs to be a better mechanism for problem students to be dealt with in a manner so as to limit their impact on an institution’s populous. Some teachers can be downright tools – as can some independent newspaper editors - but I would rather have teachers with more disciplinary powers than see such ridiculous behaviour go unchecked. Danger pay is a term that should not be in the sentence with teacher. So, long story short: I see little option for the province (short of higher taxes) to get its fiscal house in order if it cannot get the pay structure of all its employees under longterm control. This is, in no way, a shot at teachers, just a harsh economic reality.

Editorial unfair, teachers just want fair pay, says retired educator DearEditor, It is vey commendable and fair that, as you say in your editorial about the stair issue, “...every intention is given to provide information uniformly from both sides of an issue, .... Simply, balance.” However, your first three words “With most items....” indicates that this is not always the case. And you prove it on the same page with your short, biased editorial, “Solving Ontario’s money problems”. As an educator - a retired teacher and occasional (supply) teacher, and as an acquaintance of many teachers, I have worked in the Ontario system since 1970. All parents and guardians and teaching staff and support staff (the latter have been working without a contract for over a
year) want the best for each student. It saddens me to know that people are unaware that opportunities for children at all skill levels and abilities are compromised by the lack of quick access to specialists such as speech and hearing therapists, occupational therapists, sufficient educational assistants in classrooms and others. If students’ needs are addressed early in their school careers issues like selfesteem, bullying, inability to read or communicate may NEVER be an issue, or at least be manageable. Educators do want fair pay for their work. However, contract issues that make the classroom the best place to learn are often the real issue. Many teachers personally spend

ly and behaviourally so quiet times may be rare. Best learning environment?! What a world model if the Ontario government, the school boards, the trustees, the teachers, the support staff, the parents and the students could work co-operatively to ensure the most be-
