By Katherine Grant For NewsNow After decades of discussion, the region has identified Tufford Road as the preferred location for a new escarpment crossing. A March 2014 report identified a route somewhere between Tufford and Victoria Avenue. Niagara Region held a public information centre Tuesday night at Central School in Grimsby to receive input from the community on the latest report. A steady stream of people filed through the school to look
over the regional report which identifies problems with each of the seven possible roadways examined as a potential escarpment routes. In the end, all the roads – Woolverton, Mountain (Grimsby), Park, Thirty, Mountainview, Mountain (Beamsville) and Victoria – were ruled out. Off all the solutions considered, from do nothing to implementing road improvements, a new escarpment crossing ranks first. “We have looked at and evaluated all seven crossings,” said Mira See ROUTE, Page 3
Festival, car show, tours part of Doors Open The doors of many homes and businesses are about to swing open for a trip back in time. Among those participating in Doors Open Grimsby this Saturday, Sept. 27, is the Grimsby Historical Society Archives, housed in the former Carnegie Library on Adelaide Street. Archives volunteers will use this special event to launch the sales of its first calendar. Twelve Grimsby buildings were selected to grace the months of
the year – 12 buildings built with one purpose in mind but are now used for something else, said Elaine Magri, archives volunteer and one of those behind the special project. “We started in May with a core team of three people and worked through August on it,” said Magri, adding it was a good team effort by all archive volunteers. The buildings were chosen based on a number of criteria including curb appeal, the condition of the photographs and most important,
its past and present use. Historical photos are featured along with a photo of the building as it looks today. There are bits of local history scattered throughout the calendar. The final result will serve as a fundraiser for the archives. Calendars are being sold for $10 each. Many special events are planned in Grimsby for Doors Open. Hundreds come out for fire dept. open house

The dozens of children who filed through the Grimsby Fire Station last Sunday had a great time. They got to aim a fire hose at an imaginery fire, put out some real flames with a fire extinguisher and crawl through an obstacle course. And while all the smiles meant they were having a good time, the underlying theme was fire safety.
This year’s theme was working smoke alarms and visitors were encouraged to check theirs every month. On display were two old smoke alarms recently removed from Grimsby homes. “Basically after seven to 10 years they become ineffective,” said Firefighter Mike Osadciw. New alarms have a combination of voice and alarm, he added.

In a 24-hour period, the Beamsville Lions collect enough food to provide 33,000 meals for local families. “That is a remarkable expression of community support,” said Carole Fuhrer, executive director Community Care of West Niagara. This is the 25th year the Beamsville Lions Club has mobilized the community to collect food for CCWN. “This is the 25th year we will benefit from all their hard work,” said Fuhrer. “They really understand that this is a priority in our community.” She noted about 25,000 pounds is usually collected representing about 20 to 25 per cent of the total need of the food bank each

But there is still lots to do, with a pending biosolids application, need for south side parking in Beamsville’s core, a new Jordan Museum master plan, development of Prudhomme’s Landing and creation of a bandshell at Charles Daley Park on the top of that list.

No, not because Torstar, Metroland, Niagara This Week, Grimsby Lincoln News...whatever you choose to call them...has dropped their pants so many times on ad rates they really don’t wear any anymore. Weeks ago when I saw a written quote for a quarterpage ad from them for $119, including the colour charge, for a new advertiser....not even someone who spends 10s of thousands of dollars each year, I realized the corporate guys were foaming at the mouth to get rid of little ol’ me. To put that in perspective, 15 years ago, a colour charge alone was $99 and that was a super low price. In May of 2012, Niagara This Week attempted to roll out a new rate card quoting $312 for a black and white quarter page. Ah, how the mighty have fallen....in a manner of speaking. They can discount all day and have for years, just not to the predatory pricing levels local advertisers are seeing these days. If the circumstances were not so dire, it would be truly laughable. This week, I had a meeting
with a local election candidate. The candidate said, “Wow, they must really want to kill you. They quoted me $400 for a full page for my election ad.” Election ads are different. Papers are supposed to set their rate and it is the same for all. Our rate is double, so candidates have a choice: if you want your ad seen, choose us; if you want dirt cheap, you know where to go...call 905-945-8392, I am sure someone across the street can help you. Aside from that garbage, an email I got back in the summer which called our rates “offensive” really bothered me. It was a new business owner who clearly had no clue of advertising reality and what will face that business if NewsNow goes the way of the dodo. Any business which has opened in the last year and a half will ONLY know of the shopper-style rates which my corporate competitor peddles. is there an impact for them? Sure. Why do you think they have had two major cutbacks and will face another soon? They just put more on existing staff and march on. It is no mystery. I cannot and will not try to compete with a $400 page. And to give you some perspective there, I called another paper with a circulation of 2,500 to get their six-time rate, which was just over $700 and $100 for colour....that 2,500 homes, $800 per page. We GREATLY appreciate the support we get and don’t take even a $5 classified for granted. We will do what we do for 20 more years if I have my way. I apologize right now for another column of drivel. There are a great deal of truly important things happening that deserve ink, but I won’t get to write about any of it if people don’t know what is happening.

Crew abandons ship before 1982 sinking By Skip Gillham For NewsNow Thuleland was built at Bremen, West Germany, in 1955. It was owned by Svenska-Orient Line of Sweden and the 119.79 metre long cargo ship was specially strengthened for navigation in ice. The vessel sailed on saltwater routes and was sold to Resolute Shipping for service to the Canadian Arctic in 1972. The name was unchanged and the ship headed north annually to deliver cargo to remote communities scattered across Canada’s Arctic region. Without many major ports, Thuleland had to carry a tug on deck.
Shipwreck When the ship anchored off each community, the tug was lowered into the water and pushed barge loads of cargo to shore. Thuleland also made an appearance in the Seaway in 1974. Thuleland was sold and registered in Greece in 1975 and was sailing under a fourth name of Admiral Sohn, Panamanian flag, when it sank of Chibote, Peru, on Oct. 21, 1982. The vessel, on a voyage from Iquique, Chile, to Moorhead City, NC, began leaking in the engineroom and sank after it was abandoned by the crew.
