Berry berates gallery member “The gallery can’t be laughing,” the finance committee chair shouted By Mike Williscraft NewsNow There is no crying in baseball and, apparently, there is no laughing in the Grimsby Council chambers. A brief but loud exchange between Administration

and Finance Committee chair, Ald. Steve Berry and gallery members arose during discussion on a motion which would see the Town waive taxes for Grimsby Energy’s biodigester site at 424 Sobie Road.

Under the proposal, the Town-owned Grimsby Energy would not pay property taxes to the municipality, nor would it pay its share of Region or school board taxes. After Ald. Dave Kadwell

John Dunstall and Mayor Bob Bentley voting in favour. After the meeting, Davoli said she simply smiled and covered her mouth. There was nothing audible at the media table and those seated around her said they did not hear anything that could have been construed as disrupting the proceedings. “Mr. Berry said he thinks people who question this project are trying to make it fail. Nothing could be further from the truth,” said Davoli. “Not one person wants that, but what we do want is for the vari-

ous hydro boards and council to be forthright with all the information. This council has not represented the best interests of the community by withholding the financial statements of those companies from us. It begs the question of ‘what are they hiding?’. “ During the discussion, CAO Derik Brandt said it made financial sense to waive the taxes as money that would go to other levels of government would stay local. When asked for examples of other municipalities which had wavied taxes for private companies they own, Brandt said there were several, but could not name a particular facility or municipality. Kadwell did note, “Are they not able to pay their taxes up there?” The issue now goes to council Sept. 17.

Terry Fox Runs go this Sunday Exercise, helping a great cause, snacks, silent auction opportunities and fun will all be part of the mix this Sunday as Grimsby and Smithville host their annual Terry Fox Runs. Grimsby gets its day started with registration at the Peach King Centre at 9 a.m., run starting at 10 a.m. Smithville’s event will start its registration at 10:30 a.m. while its run starts 11 a.m. in the parkette behind the West Lincoln Twp Hall. As part of its festivities, Karen Post, organizer of the Smithville event, said a silent auction has been set up with bidding having already opened. “The bidding opened Sept. 8 and runs until midnight this Saturday, Sept. 15. You can go to Terry Fox Silent Auction Bids on facebook to see what is up for grabs,” said Post. Flight of a lifetime on Lancaster bomber By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow Phillip Harrison was having lunch in his Grimsby kitchen when he heard the low throaty rumble of the Avro Lancaster roar in the sky overhead. He ran out of the house, looked up, ran back inside, sat down and said, “it’s okay, it’s one of ours.” It was an instinctive reflex, born in The Blitz of the Second World War and a time during his childhood in London, England when every moment was lived on alert for the sound of incoming planes. He had no idea that ‘Vera’ was on her inaugural flight, September 24, 1988, after 11 years of extensive restoration at her home base in the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope. And it was a jarring and deeply innate reaction to those years under ravaged skies. Thirty years later, in what would be the spectacular thrill of a lifetime, Harrison boarded the heavy bomber at the aviation museum, and wrapped in her protective wings passed over his Grimsby rooftop from an altitude of about 1600 feet. Excitement ran high leading up to the big day. “Last night I was rebuilding engines all night in my dreams.” And it will be some time before his feet touch the ground following Saturday’s flight. The list is long for passengers eager to fly on the Lancaster. Harrison waited a year for his ticket and he cred-

its his wife Margaret for the making the dream come true. The aviation museum is the only place in the world you can fly in a Lancaster. The legendary plane is one of just two still flying in the world. The other is in England and is not available for passenger flights. “You are one of only eight people in the world to fly on a Lancaster this week,” Ted Lowrey told Harrison during a pre-boarding briefing. Two flights every Saturday take four passengers up in the morning and four more in the afternoon. Vera, as the fourengined bomber is nicknamed for her call letters VRA, is quite a

character and it’s a love story shared by every pilot and passenger who joins her in the skies. “You can’t describe it, the smell of the working machine, the roar of the dull throated engines. You’re in this vintage plane that has so much history and you feel so privileged just to be there, for it to fly wholly for your pleasure. I can’t put words around it,” Harrison said, adding he gained new perspective on the challenges faced by the airmen, their courage and long hours of extreme discomfort manning the war birds. “It was incredible. I just wish everybody could have the experience.” The hour-long flight

took the passengers and crew over Hamilton, Stoney Creek and Grimsby, to Niagara Falls and back along the shoreline of Lake Erie to Caledonia and home. Built in 1945, the Mynarski Memorial Avro Lancaster Mk X bomber is just one of the ‘characters’ at the aviation museum, planes with personality, many of which can be booked for a flight in a collection of 47 aircraft and displays dedicated to the country’s rich military aviation history from the Second World War. “People come from around the world to fly in the Lancaster,” said Museum marketing manager Al Mickeloff. From history and aviation buffs, to those with

a penchant to understand what their grandfathers went through in the war, the Lancaster is the most popular and the most expensive ticket and it sells out every year at $3,500 for an hour flight. “The Lancaster was the sound of freedom,” Mickeloff said. “When they were leaving bases in England it was hope for the British people.” “A non-profit organization we are an aviation museum that specializes in Canadian military aircraft from World War II,” Mickeloff said, noting the unique fact that many of the aircraft have been restored to flying condition. Flights are available on a number of the

Museum’s planes ranging from $80 per seat. “You get to experience real flying…..it’s not like your commercial airline experience.” “It’s a flying museum, a working museum,” said Mickeloff. He credits the 500 volunteers who are integral to the successful operation and assist in every facet from guiding tours to work on the aircraft. “There is no way we could operate without our volunteer base.” “This is a wonderful place,” said Harrison who has been volunteering as a tour guide for the past year. It’s a great environment to work with someone like that.” Today there are only nine Lancaster pilots in the world, and they form a club more elite than space shuttle pilots. Six of them, including Rohrer, fly from the museum airfield, and three are in England. “Phil is a very knowledgeable guy about the aircraft and he loves talking to people about his passion. An extensive 11-year restoration project was undertaken by volunteers led by engineer Norm Etheridge and the Lancaster took her inaugural flight 30 years ago - the very same day that Harrison heard her rumble over Grimsby. While it has since been seen airborne by tens of millions of people, Saturday’s flight in the heart of the Lancaster, was a personal voyage, a dream come true for this aviation aficionado. “You feel the guiding hand of God as you are flying. Thousands of Canadian airmen and ground crew served with RCAF and RAF Lancaster squadrons in England during the war. Harrison’s career path out of high school was one way to the Royal Canadian Air Force. He joined the Air Cadets at 16 and during a routine medical prior to joining the RCAF learned he was colourblind, crushing his own dream to fly airplanes. He studied meteorological navigation and had a long and successful career as a medical technologist and computer programmer in Hamilton hospitals. “When I became a programmer there were two of us in Canada that had hospital and computer experience. The two of us wrote the first laboratory computer system in Canada,” Harrison said. Built in 1945, Lancaster ‘Vera’ was retired from the RCAF in 1963 and on display at the Royal Canadian Legion in Goderich,

The program was created by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, during the Second World War.

Rose Cottage Visiting Volunteers will host its Canines for Compassion WalkA-Thon this Saturday. The event - for two legged human variety and fourlegged creatures of the canine species will start at the Lincoln Plaza, 5205 King St., in Beamsville. West Niagara Fair highlights great weekend Rides, snacks, livestock, a petting zoo and all kinds of fun were on the menu this past weekend at the West Niagara Fair. The agricultural centre grounds were breezy for most of the weekend but the cooler weather was a welcomed break from the sweltering heat earlier in the week.

Dear Editor It was a most interesting Finance meeting that Mr. Berry chaired this past Monday. By the end of the meeting he did have me smiling a lot. I’m not sure why he found that threatening and proceeded to use his pulpit to verbally accuse me of “disrupting the decorum” of the meeting. Throughout the entire meeting he would not look at the audience or make eye contact. Not a sound passed my lips, only a large smile was on my face as I sat quietly in my chair in the audience. Perhaps he thought he could read my thoughts. And, since he seems curious

Letter about them, let me take this opportunity to share them. Good leaders put people first. It’s not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those that we lead. That was not what I saw exhibited at the meeting at all. And, having been to quite a number of these meetings, it was unfortunately one of a long line of similar experiences. I saw a meeting where there were very few deep questions asked by the committee members when the reports presented begged for more questions and analysis. I saw one alderman attempt to ask ques-

tions and get belittled by Mr. Berry as the Chair. I saw the Chair exhibit a misunderstanding of the responsibilities of the Niagara Compliance Audit Committee and complain about the “silliness of election season”. And then I saw and experienced it first hand as Mr. Berry attempted to ridicule me as I sat quietly in the audience, smiling as I absorbed this “silliness”. What I didn’t see was a leader that puts people first or takes care of those they say they want to lead. I take the privilege of our democratic system very seriously. It is not silliness. I think we should all use the privilege

wisely; it is our responsibility as voters to understand the issues and to examine the candidates and cast our vote carefully. A culture and likewise a municipal government is strong when we work with each other, share information, encourage an understanding of all aspects of the issues; and not work against the above goals and belittle each other as Mr. Berry attempted to do. Mr. Berry’s actions did not exhibit good leadership. I invite Mayoral candidate Jeff Jordan to place one of his signs on my front lawn as I now am convinced of whom I support. Delight Davoli

Betty was born on August 21st, 1928 to her parents Audrey and Norman Allen. Betty married Henry W. (Scoot) Muir in 1950 and the couple moved to Beamsville where Scoot worked for Hydro. Betty is survived by her husband Scoot, son and daughter-in-law Bob and Donna Muir, daughter-in-law Cathy, 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Allen Muir. Betty drove school bus and had fond memories of the many students she met. An avid golfer, she was a member of the Twenty Valley Golf Club for over 60 years. The couple enjoyed golfing through the winter in Okeechobee Florida. She is remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be deeply missed by friends, family, and all who knew her.

Suggestion of bad wishes off base This has been noted many, many times on this page and in countless conversations but it seems to be lost on at least one alderman, if not the vast majority of Grimsby Town Council and hydro officials: nobody wants the biodigester to fail. Nobody. The only thing that made sense from what Ald. Steve Berry said at Finance on Monday night was that hoping for failure, indeed, makes no sense. I have been intensely critical at times, as have many others of the project. From my point of view, I look at it purely from a public interest perspective and I see only liability. Starting with the CoGen, that tanked. The bio got off to a horrible start, super late, two years overdue and triple the initial budget, reports say it’s running awesome, staff as recently as last week said it only runs under 50 per cent capacity most of the time and there is much, much more to it than that. Yet, council (except Dave Kadwell largely) sit on its collective hands, mouths shut, saying and questioning NOTHING! Now, at election time, they dodge in shadows at the notion of attending any all-candiates meeting. Shameful all around and, as previously noted, not one of them should be voted back in. M.W.

Not a ‘Berry’ fun meeting... Before we get into the carnival that was the brief but memorable Grimsby Administration and Finance Committee meeting on Monday, a tip o’ the cap to West Lincoln Chamber of Commerce!! They got it right! Real, honest to goodness all-candidates meetings for all positions in the municipality – councillors, mayor AND regional councillor. For that, the board of directors highly deserves a vote of thanks, not from me, but from every person in West Lincoln, even those who CHOOSE not to go. As I have tried to say in recent weeks, it has nothing to with how many people will come out, it has to do with the opportunity to come out. If residents choose not to participate, great! I have no time for people who are armchair voters. If you cannot be bothered to root out the truth, see some of the chicanery that goes on first hand at meetings, and make yourself informed, the municipality is better off if you stay home. It is also not about any host of such an event attempting to control an agenda. Questions submitted in writing, vetted by a group and chosen to ensure a cross-section of topics is the way to go. West Lincoln has done it, A Better Grimsby has planned that for their series of events which starts next Thursday and Lincoln Chamber will use that format for its abbreviated mayoral and regional councillor debates. It is not rocket science. It has been done for years, and should carry on for years more. During our Lincoln Chamber board meeting last week I noted to those on hand that, in my opinion, we dropped the ball in not carrying on with all-candidates programming as we (the

MIKE WILLISCRAFT chamber) had done in my 20 years on the scene. That ship has sailed, so moving on. I will note, I have had calls from many Lincoln candidates and I have spoken with Deb Dueck about booking the meeting space downstairs at Conversations for a series of true ward all-candidates debates. I just have to figure timing for when I could arrange them and communicate to all the candidates. It may happen, it may not. We may get 10 people for each meeting, we may get 80. The point is, that does not matter. It is about a chance every four years to make incumbents accountable and give opponents a chance to express their platforms on a level playing field. There really is no sense attempting this kind of thing in Grimsby because it really does not matter if Pope Francis signed on as moderator I am sure Tony Quirk and Steve Berry – along with other Grimsby incumbents – would find a reason to dodge an allcandidates night. The guys who are organizing the Grimsby sessions, A Better Grimsby, are simply organizers. They have no more control over the questions than anyone else who submits questions written ahead of time. Berry has written on social media he doesn’t want to at-

tend because one of the organizers shouted at the mayoral debate four years ago. One thing Grimsby council has nailed down is hypocrisy, and they have that in spades! Let’s roll around to Monday night when, out of the blue, Berry pipes up and shouts at local accountant Delight Davoli about laughing in council chambers. It really was as dumb as that sounds. I don’t mean to sound rude, but it was a highly rude situation. However, by Berry’s own criteria, he should not have anything to do with committee meetings anymore because he yelled at someone – totally out of order. Of course not, because that kind of notion is just plain silly. Davoli’s Letter to the Editor speaks for itself, nothing to add here. I do encourage residents of Ward 3 to turn out next Thursday, Sept. 20 at Grimsby Legion for the first of the allcandidates series. All the all-candidates meetings will go as programmed, but the Oct. 3 mayoral and regional councillor debate is up in the air. Both Berry and Quirk have declined, leaving only mayoral candidate Jeff Jordan and regional councillor candidate Wayne Fertich in attendance. So the councillor has to be the right one to advocate and create results in our direction so we can be safe and regional duties be carried out. The last serious accident at Reg. 65 and Reg. Rd 2 required officers to respond. The fellow blocking the road at my intersection hardly knew where he was. He

came from a detachment in Welland. So in the next few weeks when you meet with your fellow farmer at the old mill or machinery dealer, or you’re in the coffee shop or even on a Sunday after church when the family and friends are gathered, strike up a conversation about the upcoming election in West Lincoln. Dear Editor, To the taxpayers and their voting family members in West Lincoln a stark warning: If you vote and do not get it right this time around at the Oct. 22/18 municipal election, then be prepared to experience being once again plundered by the direction of the existing council. Some of you most likely do not even know that you pay taxes in a different ward now. Yes, that changed and Ward 1 is even larger so to speak – served by only two councillors. So it’s time to get informed by reading the material everyone received from the municipal offices with the list of the candidates. Some of whom are running again and many others that will, if you vote them in, be greenhorns. If they don’t knock on your door soon, red flag them. Then again, many of the incumbents ought to be red-flagged anyways. Some of the new candidates will be serious, while others are running only because they need a cash flow increase to ease life’s burdens, so ask them if that’s the case. The answer will quickly tell you something. Based on the performance of the present council, my outlook is better to vote in a devil one doesn’t know this time, than re-elect what has created tax hell for us these past four years – forgetting the rural part of this municipality.
